New 1946 Install & Win 8
My 1946 disk arrived from Amazon today and so I had to drop everything and install it. I have a new computer system that came with Win8 which I have been setting up. I already have CLoD installed in the normal x86 program directory which did not run until I used sKYo's fix from these forums. Runs very well now.
A number of members here said to install 1946 in a directory outside of the main "Program" directories so I figured I would take that advice. Autorun seemed to want to run then didn't. Manually starting the Setup App brought up the usual "Do you want to allow......" screen. Yes. Then nothing. I was getting a bit concerned when I finally double clicked the file simply named "a" and ran that. Finally the "Installshield Wizard" for 1946 popped up and after giving it the name of the directory I had created we were off.............. This game took a long LONG time to install. Progress stayed on 0% for so long I almost gave up. But eventually it started to increase ever so slowly. Finally it finished and the program ran and as hoped ran very fast with graphics etc set to high. I didn't see the version number but assuming it's 4.07 to start. I have downloaded and saved the series of patches but someone here suggested playing around with the stock install for awhile before getting into the patches. I took at look at the various manuals in the install directory. More docs then CLod for sure. 459 pages on aircraft models alone. Wow ! That's it to start anyway Edit: So far I have installed the patches through 4.10m one at a time and running the program plus flying a quick mission in between each install. The correct version num showed on the start screen each time and everything looked and ran well. I also installed the "4.09 skins" pak before the 4.10 patch. |
It sounds, as you did all correctly. Congrats! :)
EDIT: Once you are into reading, I strongly suggest you to read the guides and manuals that have come with the patches since 4.09. Some new features were released with them and need some attention, if you want to master them. I got a bit irritated by this part: Quote:
Just make sure, you make a copy of your running game, before you apply mods. And... have fun, of course! :) |
Ok. I'm patched up through 4.11.1 and everything looks and runs well.
I tested after each patch then moved on to the next. I also printed out each new "readme" as I went along. Impressive amount of work done by the team. The self installing patches worked well and were very welcome. (Just remember to change the default directory if required). Some manual patches with lengthy step-by-step procedures are nightmares to get through without error. The poster I mentioned did suggest playing with 4.07 for awhile before patching but I failed to see the advantage to that. CLod has the advantage in ground scenery and graphic resolution for sure but 1946 looks very good and the scope, depth, and immersive potential seem superior. I also, as stated, have had no issues installing and running under Windows 8. I did install in a separate Games directory outside of the Program directories. Looking forward to having 1946 on my drive for a long time to come. |
You are welcomed! :)
BTW, there is a so called mega patch, which brings you directly from 4.07 to 4.10.1, including the skin patch. It has been compiled by guys from the community and may be helpfull for you in the future: http://www.mission4today.com/index.p...etails&id=4088 (you need to be registered on that page though, but I recommend it, as the page is awesome) BTW: Once you are satisfied with how your game runs, you can burn it to DVDs or copy it to an external harddrive. Generally the game should run without registry entries (and maybe also without DVD), so you can place it whereever you want. I did install my game only once - years ago - and since then I only copied/pasted it to three new computers now. :) |
Mega Patch
4.07 - v4.10.1 No registration needed. http://il2server.de/downloads/IL-2_M...4.10.1m_EN.rar For future installation :) |
Thanks again for the additional links. My install patched through the most current still requires the dvd to be in the drive to start. Would be nice if that was not necessary though

Well allrighty then ! The next phase will be HSFX. I have downloaded that megapak to a working folder. Next going to copy and re-name the Updated 1946 folder.

Sitting inside while the snow gets cleared away here southwest of Boston. Seemed like a good time to continue with the HSFX 6.0 install.
Copied my whole freshly updated 1946 folder and renamed it with HSFX added to the name. Ran the first HSFX 6.0 exe file from it's folder and pointed it to my 1946 HSFX directory. It did it's business, running parts 2 and 3 automatically. Went into the directory root and ran the JSGME switcher program as instructed. Enabled the HSFX History mod. I noticed that there were 10 other mods listed. Which of those do I want to enable ? And what do they do ? Ran the exe to start the main program. The splash screen showing the HSFX 6.0 designation appeared. Started a new Finnish Campaign with those funky bi-planes. The overall scenery look has a different "feel" without any one thing jumping out initially. Looks good to me. Sound is greatly improved however. Nice ! On autopilot shortly after takeoff to allow the group to get sorted out into formation the leader in my pair ran into me tearing my wings off and trashing my fuselage. I said "Hmm. This is something new..." At that point the radio voice is ordering me back to base which I'm sort of trying to do but straight down and really fast. Seemed like a good time to post this update before going back in to explore some more of HSFX. Should be fun ! |

Or are you just trolling ? |
Nothing but good things seem to have resulted from the install of HsFx 6, so I figured that I'd go ahead an install the Auto-Updater. That was quick and simple - again just be aware of the correct directory where your 1946 / HsFx mods live.
Now in the process of running the updater which is in the process of downloading 714 mb of stuff. Installation is supposed to be automatic except that at the end you will have to re-activate at least the HsFx history mods through the jsgme.exe utility The professionalism of the crew that puts all this together for the community continues to impress me at every stage Edit: jsgme.exe ran automatically after the updates bringing my version up to HsFx 6.0.17 had been installed . I activated the HsFx History mod and one other, Perfect Map Textures. There were a total of 14 possible mods listed which could be activated. I would like to find out what each one does before just randomly activating them all I think. Missions seem to still load and run fine at this time. |
On a slightly different but related note, I continue to fiddle with older game installs in Win 8. I installed but could not get the original IL-2 Sturmovik to run. Didn't try very hard but kept getting some memory error... ?
On the other hand, MS Combat Flight Sim 2 from 1998 to 2000 installed and ran without a hiccup. Keeping the age in mind the graphics aren't bad and the gameplay is decent. I was also able to install Just Flight's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight from 2001 on top of MS-CFS2. That was also a very nice piece of work for the time. Remember really nice detailed manuals and docs that you could hold in your hand and prop up on your desk. I almost never had a computer that was really up to running these programs at the time I purchased them. Kinda fun seeing them on a system that far exceeds the required specs. The original Microprose Falcon 4.0 inc the 1.08 final patch installed and runs very well. I have the original 2 1/2 inch thick 3-ring binder version. You can still appreciate the "oh wow" reaction it got at the time and is still appealing today. Edit: Also easily installed the latest SuperPak mods which really add to all aspects of the game. Nice job. A couple of Rowan / Empire titles I have tried so far play the intro screens and setup ok but then go black when you try to run a mission. |
