Fast Kill, Slow Motion (new movie up)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Wuknd8Q60
This sim has amazing graphics, but often the dogfights are over so fast that there's no time for the details to sink in. I tried to show those details in this movie, which is a bit different from my earlier stuff. I hope you like it. Comments and suggestions are very welcome! About some of the details: - The Spittie pilot chose to only load tracers in his two outer machine guns. Tracer bullets (and tracer cannon shells) are the only ones that show up graphically in CoD. This pretty well mimics real life, where you can't see machine gun bullets and cannon shells either. However, all the non-tracer bullets are modelled as well, and their effect is very obvious when you hit the target. Some pilots prefer not to load tracers at all, to hide from opponents that they are being shot at. - The cannon shells are set to explode on impact, but actually these shells also carried a small timer delay, so that they exploded anyway, after going a certain distance. This was so that the ground wouldn't be littered with un-exploded cannon shells. When I fire at the Spitfire at long range you can see that by the end of the burst my shells happen to be at the distance where they explode. That way they end up damaging the Spit, even though they don't hit him. A bit like Flak bursts. - The Spit completely ravaged my oil and water coolers with his first burst, but seemingly did not hit my engine. That's why my engine works well for another minute, before it seizes up due to overheating. What can I say, I love the damage modelling in CoD... :-) |
Amazing. You are getting better with every video. Camera-Perspective is very well done.
Did you use any effects other than sweetFX? The 109 look quite blurry at 2.31-2.37, very realistic, looks like an effect trough the steam coming from leaks! Contrats on that vid! |
Thanks!
- No effects whatsoever used, not SweetFX either (whatever that is!). This is a vanilla install, patched as per November 2012, when I did the movie. Blur is due to the steam and muzzle gases coming out... |
Your best yet. No doubt about it.

OK! - I guess I should start doing some more slow-mo... Music is also very popular, I think.
BTW, Brownie points for those who can identify the 109 skin :-) |

Well done, right you are!
BTW, very happy to understand from people that they like the direction my video work is taking... |
Excellent. You were perhaps a little lucky with the long range shots but you deserved the hits with the rudder kick:cool:

Nice video. I thought the slow motion and music worked well, but so did the titles and camera-work. It was the clear and deliberate approach to the presenting of the action that appealed most to me. The 'story' structure, the order in which you showed the action playing out, could have been different, but as the maker of the video you get to make that choice, so, that's all good, as long as you explored other options and didn't miss an opportunity to tell the story in a more effective way. The only thing that bothered me about the video was the voice we can hear over the 'radio'. I was a bit confused about whose voice that was and what it was saying. I probably would have made that more clear, by using more titles to talk back to it if it wasn't the same pilot we were watching, or just cut it out altogether with some tricky sound editing. All in all though, really good video imo.

Tricky sound editing, that's exactly it.. - It was unrelated chatter but I didn't find any good way to edit it out, with my rather modest skills. Thanks for your analysis, really interesting to read, because I get very little feedback like that. Any remarks on how you think the story could otherwise have been told are very welcome. I am having a lot of fun learning story-telling basics, and I'm certainly still a newbie in that field, which is fine, because it means there's only one way, namely UP! :-)

Beautiful video!
CoD is amazing in so many ways |
A great idea and perfect execution!
Please try using some AA tools if possible as FXAA or FlightFX SMAA. Aliasing kills impression of this beautiful game sometimes. I hope a mod will fix it one day. |
Interesting and fresh concept!

I actually don't use any extras at all, just fly "vanilla" CoD. I guess it would look better with AA, but how should I do to get it? I don't understand those abbreviations...

Freycinet, SweetFX is a 'shader suite' utility that applies post-processing visual effects to Cliffs Of Dover. One of the effects is a kind of anti-aliasing that your video-card doesn't use by default, and which never used to be available in your video card settings at all (hence the need for these kind of utilities). The SweetFX shader suite also enables you to change the colours of the game in a similar way to how you can change them in your video editing software when you're editing a recording of the game.
Attached to this post is a version of the SweetFX shader suite I've put together for Cliffs Of Dover. It applies anti-aliasing to some (not all) jagged edges and smooths them out. It also changes the default colours to something that might be considered more realistic looking (when flying during daylight hours). Just copy the contents of the folder I've attached and paste them into wherever you have Cliffs Of Dover installed on your computer (wherever your Launcher .exe file is). To uninstall, just manually delete those same files. There's a readme included with further instructions in more detail (eg. you might want to back up your original 'd3d9.dll' file before over-writing it with the SweetFX one). Here's a link to a (long and probably confusing) thread about it and another shader suite (injectFxaa_by_some_dude, that you can use instead of SweetFX), if you want to read up on it or see before and after pictures - http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=32255 |
wow so matrix cool :)

SMAA is the 1st setting in the 2nd tab allowing to change settings. Les, as I did not try FXAA injector do you know if it works better for CloD than SweetFX or not? |
Nice Video ...........
How do you make your recording from a track and not get the default lettering on top of your custom skin?? When ever I try the default code always seem to overlap any custom skin. It appears fine in game but as soon as I record as a track the default markings show as well Edit.....I guess that's not a custom skin ...........:) |

There's nothing wrong with it, but I used the FXAA injector/shader suite because it was the only one around at the time. I'd recommend using the SweetFX shader suite now, mainly for it's comparitive ease of use and the fact that it's still being worked on and supported by its developer, whereas the FXAA suite isn't. I don't have a use for the FlightFX GUI (graphical user interface) utility and so don't use that, as it would just be another potential source of problems and complications for me. Sorry for the off-topic Freycinet. |
Hey, whatever bumps the thread... :-)
Thx for all the info. I personally was never bothered by the colours and (at 1080p very slight, in my eyes) jaggedness. I probably won't be using the shaders etc. since it seems to me it just adds another layer of complexity to the sim experience. If I primarily did screenies it would be a different story. Also, I don't have too much hardware overhead to have other processes running. If you can tell me it is just "fire-up-and-forget" and that it doesn't tax my system particularly then it would be a different story... |
It's, er, um, just "fire-up-and-forget" and doesn't tax your system particularly.
But seriously, while the difference isn't a big deal for a lot of people, it's probably worth having a look at just to see and judge for yourself. It's no harder than copying and pasting a few files and then deleting them if you don't want to keep using them. |
Ok, you convinced me, I'll give it a go! :-)
|
Really cool, more slowmo please :)
I especially like collisions >:) Why you dont post at Simhq amymore btw? |

I can only see the forum if I don't log into the site, so I stopped logging in. Still visit the place from time to time, though it has become much less relevant to me after http://forum.il2sturmovik.net/ and http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/forum.php came along. So, once in a while I still pop by SimHQ, I just don't post there any longer. No loss for me since I already know what I think about something without having to post it... :-) |
Love the vid (as always). Had a play with the track recorder myself after watching.
This game looks so good. Glad you have the talent to put it together the way you do. |
