Can we please have them sound like this little monster. I've noticed that these Flug Werks sound different each video. This must be good recording equipment because this is the best sounding recording so far.

Who really cares if the engine sounds right or not, what is more important is the view seen by the pilot!!!!

I care, those sounds are half the fun ! On the ground , the first one sounds better ,I like the rough raggedy misfires. In the air the second one sounds much better. Also the BF109 souds wicked ..

You can say better, but only the second one is accurate.

Seems they have put a starter on the Bf109E there as no-one was cranking. And that Fw190 sounded so damn good. Screw those abominations with that Made in China crap engines :evil: And tip to devs..how about those sounds of Emil to CoD? Sound quite a bit different than now :D

meh .. I for one, will not have a bar of it.

EDIT btw Bewolf has it right, most of the Flug Werks 190 replicas are fitted with something like R2800 clones.

I know online Jocks often prefer immersion and balanced play over historical accuracy but that would be a bit like using an Allison or RR engine in the 109.

As you can see it sounds slightly different, despite it's the same engine/plane/day (you can hear the other machine in the background flying around and the pilot talking).

That's because every camera has it's own quality issues in sound, so don't take just some ransome videos and scream "It should sound like that!"

Weren't they fitted with chinese replicas of the ASh-82?

The BMW801 and the ASh82 were manufactured from the same patents sold from America (Wright, i believe) to Germany (BMW) and Russia (ASh) around 1935.
They have the same roots and only minor modifications separating them.
BMW needed a stronger radial design around 1835 as they were forced to stop the production of their V12 engine by the air ministry, the V12 patents were sold to Allison and became the V1701, Russia (Klimov) also used this BMW patents and build from them the VK107. Today on a Yak-3 or Yak-7 you can still exchange a VK107 with a Allison V1701 easily, as i.e. the original engine mounts fit perfectly for both engines.

the differences in sound are given by a combination of factors, here are some:

1) exhaust note: a T-6 with short exhaust will sound a tad louder and crispier than and a Harvard with longer exhaust.
Same goes for similar engines installed of different machines: flame dampeners and exhaust design all contribute to the different sound.

2) propellers: a two bladed constant speed propeller will sound very loud when its wingtips go supersonic, whilst a 3 or 4 bladed prop will be more efficient and less prone to that. That's why a T-6 is louder than a Mustang.

3) aerodynamic features: the "Mustang howl" that we all know is caused by the angle and shape of the gun ports, which work as a whistle at certain speeds and angles. Same goes for the design of other aerodynamical features of the plane.

4) mechanical and structural features: superchargers, turbochargers and other similar features all contribute to the sound. The whizzing noise in the Bf109 is caused by the supercharger impeller fan.
Airframe resonance is surely another thing to keep into account: the shape and construction technique might give the plane a different resonance, but again this is something for fine listeners.

5) last but not least is the kind of engine! The combination of RPM, number of cylinders and setup of the crankcase all contribute to the distinct rhythm of an engine.

So no, an ASh82 won't sound exactly like a BMW801 because there's different exhaust curves, different engine mounts, different cowls, different idles. It's the same configuration, but it's no cigar.

Cranking was only required when there was no auxiliary power source. You could just plug in the cables and the starter would do the rest.

The Bayerische Motroen Werke (BMW) based in Munich, were manufacturing Pratt and Whitney radials under license in the 1930’s and used this experience to develop its own twin row engine.
