As the topic says. Someone done that in the game, or could it even be done ???

If so, that would be epic! (if so, post vid)

Total Hollywood BS !.... like most of the movie it came from !

Hooves 05-12-2012 08:17 AM

There have been reports of some pretty amazing tactics to break contact, but I dont think any of them allowed for such a quick snap shot on a chasing Aircraft.

But, that being said some pilots were able to make their planes do some incredible things. But this is a Hollywood exageration.

robtek 05-12-2012 08:19 AM

That move can be done in a few space shooter games where aerodynamics and gravitational forces have no meaning, or in the fantasy of movie makers.

It has no however small relation to reality.

A flightsimulation allowing that wouldn't be a flightsimulation at all.

See this video for an example

From my understanding the action is plausible, but the motion is obviously exaggerated.
If a pilot pulls up at speed, the plane will stall making it easier to change direction due to a lower air pressure surrounding the wings. Total loss of respect for Hollywood.

Trumper 05-12-2012 09:00 AM

In times of mortal danger incredible things can happen BUT if it is shown as a normal manoeuvre then not good BUT as a once off last ditch "get him off at all costs" then maybe.
At air displays we probably don't see a third of the capabilities of the airframe, they are flown within limitations but in wartime life or death with 30,000 ft of airspace below you,who knows.
Look at the P51 crash at Reno, the sharp move ,huge g forces, maybe at 30,000 ft he may have regained conciousness before the plane reached the ground and recovered.
We weren't there so i guess in wartime extremes happen but Hollywood shouldn't make extremes normal.

AH good find, I didn't watch that series all the way to the end! Well there you have it. I wouldn't be surprised if this is where they got the idea to do it in the movie.

SO I guess its possible, but man can you imagine the G's?

I wouldn't believe ANYTHING I'd see on History Channel. They are renowned for consistently fabricating bullcrap.

You could make that using the lag in multiplayer game

IMO this is an Horrible film!

Totally agree

I remember a match from that channel, Tiger vs Sherman. History channel is propaganda from USA and England... total bullshit

Using that big gyroscope (and torque) at the front of the plane effectively, is an art well worth the learning.

Martin77 05-12-2012 11:51 AM

I personally dont believe its posible. Perhaps he made a similar thing like a hammerhead or so. But hitting the enemy plane by this unstable situation its like a wonder when he passes so fast. Maneuvres like a cobra or so are yust possible with thrust vector or disable safety locks in the computer system.

BH_woodstock 05-12-2012 12:23 PM

I saw it. i thought i was having a "Iron Eagle" flashback.I gotta lay off those green colored m&m's :)

Jatta Raso 05-12-2012 12:32 PM

it is possible on ATAG when the lag is just right, it's a manoeuvre best known as the time warp attack; Mr Sulu would be proud

seriously, it's impossible to do such a tight 360º spin in 3sec, i don't think an x-wing would pull it off

wannabetheace 05-12-2012 02:10 PM

I remember watching dogfight series and one us veteran ace was talking about his snap turn something like that and he said pull the stick to yur gut hard and left or right rudder (I don't remember maybe right have to watch again) and push the stick forward and loosen it. he said then the plane snap rolled and just he did that the 109 passed and he push the trigger just feeling where 109 would end up and he got 109.

I think in Red tail they try to show that maneuver. So somehow it might be possible. I don't think that veteran would lie :):)

Jatta Raso 05-12-2012 02:27 PM

but in the scene of the movie the roll takes 3sec and the 109 doesn't stall!!
