Single core performance is slightly higher. Overall I'd estimate some 7-10% gain over the 2600k.

DDR3 1600 support is kinda useless unless you're compressing files. As for gaming performance I'd rather get more RAM than faster ram. DDR3 1333 is totally fine. The gain from 1600 is way below 2% overall (various applications). In most games below 1% even.

PCIe3 support is also pretty much useless. Todays GPU's don't even profit much from PCIe2 over 1 so it's unlikely that there'll be much gain from 3.

This will probably be true even in 2013, when DDR4 might be introduced. The biggest pro the Ivy Bridge brings to the table is native USB3 and lower power consumption under load. You can save up to probably around 65% or so against a 2600k on a fine tuned system (undervolting)


All in all I'd say it depends on the budget. If you get a great deal on a 2600k go for it.

its tik vs tock the 3570 is a tick so its a smaller die 22nm.
is it better than a 2500k that depends it wil cost you less at beiing 77W TDP vs 95 W for 2500k.
if you are intrested in the Graphics than this a better chip its is atleast Dx11.
i've got the 2500K and it is completly sufficient for COD as it is now.

I Have a 2500 and the game runs great with my mobo auto OC'ing it to 4.2 Gig without an issue..

Will definitely move to the new Ivy Bridge using Socket 1155 :) Sure the PCIe 3.0 does not give me any extra oompah, but at least my mobo will be fully utilized so to say :)

I must be the only person in the World who has had failures in OC on my board (2500K). I run it stock because I can't be bothered anymore, even a slight OC would cause a crash in game requiring a hard reset. It wasn't 'easy', I never saw any indication of overheating - due to this instability there's probably something else going on that I'd have to learn a pile of stuff about. Gutted when I constantly hear about people just jumping into BIOS, flicking a switch and hey-presto!

Osprey, your 2500K should easily go to 4GHz even with stock voltages. I did up my voltages just a tad to be sure and no problemos. I just changed CPU multiplier and did not touch the PCIE/CLK thing, left it at 100(default).

I have the 2500k, I'm happy with it for the price/performace..its running at 4.4ghz now and I never have any CPU issues.

If you really want to future proof your rig (or have $$ to waste) then the i7 might be the way to go. On the other hand use the money you saved on cpu to get a better video card and more RAM!

As for Osprey I have no clue what his problems are but without touching anything, I hit the "EASY OVERCLOCK" button on my Asus motherboard and sent the thing to 4ghz out of the box. Once i turned it to manual and tweaked a few settings I hit 4.6 without breaking a sweat.

up, it probably should, but when I play a game it would crash. You are welcome to come to England to OC it for me though ;)


I have an Asus mobo with the B3 stepping, I used the "performance" auto overclock but ended up doing hard resets, so I tried manual tweaks at lower speeds - no joy. I took it to stock and then tried going upwards, I think I managed about 3.5, which is utter crap.

Thats why i shop here and just buy the latest bundle just chuck it in go in the bios select the ocuk overclocked profile hit f10 happy days :)

Osprey, sounds like some setting in BIOS does not like OC at all. I prefer to do it manually. So basically I have Default settings in BIOS and start from there. Most basic is to up core voltage slightly and then change the CPU multiplier only 1-2 steps at a time and test.

And I really should come to England as I want to take my son to Duxford Air Show to see real aeroplanes, no nintendo jets :D
