Returning to the game: q about servers and mods
 

Hello all! I'm returning to the game after a couple of year's absence, and have now patched my game all the way to 4.11m.

I'm first and foremost an online player, so I'm eager to get back to the servers. But as I've understood, the online community is now fragmented due to different servers demanding different modpacks.

I have no idea at all about the mods. I used to fly in the most realistic servers, such as Warclouds and Spit vs 109. So, which mods should I get to fly in the more realistic servers and where to get them?

There aren't a whole lot of 4.11 servers on yet last time I checked, so 4.10.1 + Ultrapack 3 will get you into most servers. It's quite easy to install too. Just download the full package (torrent) here:

1) Patch clean game up to 4.10.1
2) Unpack/install UP3 into game folder
3) Unpack/install UP3 RC4 into game folder
4) Fly

Still uses 4.09 and UP2 though, but excellent server.

UP is not current so don't bother about it...:grin:
There are a few servers at 4.11 on Hyperlobby, but they're mainly 'kiddie-servers'.. But there are 1 or 2 good ones still surviving.

Maybe 4.11 UP or HS will be onlline at a later stage.

however, with HSFX 6 poised to come out very soon which will based on 4.11, that will be my mod pack of choice for myself, although i will have UP3 and stock 4.11 as well, due to squad flying.

AFAIK UP on Hypperlobby is only on Version 4.10 servers - This might have changed

I really recommend getting them all ;) .. Use separate installs of the game and switch when necessary. My games folder (before installing 4.11):

Ignore mods. You can fly on a lot of servers without them. Generally those who fly IL2 straight up are the most adult and tend to be simmers more than gamers anyway....

Ignore this message, flying without mod is not more adult then playing with mods. HSFX6.0 or UP3.0 brings in lots of flyable aircraft, more maps to create missions for, covers larger portion of the theaters of war, tend to add up to the realism of the sim, HSFX brings up better visual effects that also improves frame rates a lot (will never be a bad thing in my book).

In all that I do not see how mods can be more arcadish than the stock game. Mods on the contrary tends to improve on the already great sim that IL2 is.

I cannot speak for single mods, but modpacks usually improve the game.
Compare the Italy map of the game (Sicilia linked with the rest .... :(....) with the HSFX ones and tell me wich one is more realistic and immersive....

The Italy online map in the stock game is a dogfight map. Dogfight maps are there just for fun, not for geographic accuracy. It's supposed to give you a Mediterranean feel, nothing else. Certainly better than another 50x50 square with green meadows.

Hi Sir Arthur, welcome!

It depends on the game-version of the server(s) you wish to join, but most of the online-servers already use the latest game-version. A few are still running 4.10.1m but sooner or later they will update to 4.11.1m too.
So you need to patch your game all the way up to the latest version (4.11.1m) in the correct order.

Make sure not to download and install the dedicated server version of these patches!
Always check the install-directory when installing a patch so that the patches install into your IL-2 game-folder. Start the game after each patch and check the game version (lower left corner of the loading-screen) to see if the patch installed correctly.
If you have enough free space on your harddrive I recommend to make a backup-copy of the game-folder after patching so that you don't have to reinstall the game and all the patches again when you need a fresh and clean installation of IL-2 1946 v4.11.1m (to install mods/modpacks for example). You can have as many copies of this folder as you like.

Very nice post and info, mr FS. at the begining i didnt knew what was dedicated server for , and once i install them. just one thing: when i buyed my 1946( fisical disc, not online purchase), it came with 4.07m. but it will be easy for Sir Arthur to find 4.08m, i think in this forum, or Daidalos team room.

By the way... how does dedicated server works, and what kind of hardware software you need? What options on the game settings they have that normal player doesnt? Just curious. Thank you.

While the game installs as 4.07, you should still have the 4.08 patch on the same DVD.

The dedicated server version is for setting up an IL2 server, those who want to play on that server then need the same game-version patched with the client-version of the patch. The server-version does not require special hardware, its just not the patch you want to install unless you run a game-server. :)

If Sir Arthur purchased IL-2 via steam all patches should be available there I suppose. All that is needed in addition is a hotfix for the steam-variant, fixing some issue with briefing-screen if I am right...
If he purchased the DVD the patch is in a folder on that DVD. It does not install automatically, it needs to be installed manually after the game has been installed.
