Yes we know, some of us have tried it. It is **** even though it's free IMHO.

Well, the concept might be to a died in the wool flight simmer, it's different from MS Flight Simulator. Aimed at gamers although of course supports joystick etc. FMs are quite good and in the opinion of many better than MS FS. Its a new approach with the modern marketing idea of free to download (2 aircraft) plus paid for dlc and more maps to buy later.

I use it occasionally for a change of scenery (Hawaii).

RazzyMan 04-06-2012 12:11 PM

Visually not much beyond FSX. No TrackIR. Joystick set up does not work at all well with my Saitek rig. IMO XXXX being polite at the moment. Hopefully they will unlock or add in the full equipment compatibility at some point? poor effort in relation to the sims comunity so far with this one. :(

Codex 04-06-2012 12:19 PM

gees I had no idea it was that bad. I like FSX, but mainly for the ad dons, if there is no support for TracKIR then I won't even bother.

Well u know, it's just some of our opinion. Check it out for yourself, it's free after all.

Insuber 04-06-2012 01:05 PM

In your opinion, would MS consider paying me to play their "simulation"? :-D

Troll2k 04-06-2012 02:01 PM

I have been flying it since the day it came out.You get 2 airplanes(Icon 5 and a Stearman) and the main island of Hawaii.

There is at the moment a couple of paid downloadable planes and airports.

It appears to have incorporated some of the Flight Sim Economy into it.You can take on jobs like hauling freight or giving flying tours.

There is also aerocaches.Like Easter eggs planted around. They give you a clue and you have to find them.

You can lean out the side of your Stearman using the keyboard(like TIR) so I assume the modeling is there for 6 dof.I expect Microsoft to enable that in the future for a cost.

The radios are detailed and you can tune the channels but they do not work.I assume that at some point they will be enabled or you have to pay to enable them.

I have talked to a friend that used to fly the Stearman in real life and he said this one is the most accurate of any he has flown online.

I have not flown FSX so I can not speak for the scenery.I think the clouds and water are terrible.

I suspect that true fans of the game will spend hundreds of dollars on planes, airports, and scenery when all is said and done.

It is free and good enough that I will continue to fly it.I doubt however, that I will buy and upgrades or DLC.

addman 04-06-2012 02:11 PM

The biggest problem for MS Flight I think is that they don't really know which group to target. Yes, it is accessible and easy to get into which is great for newcomers to the genre but it sorely lacks depth and fidelity in the areas needed to maintain interest. So who will fly this game -except for Troll2k-?

I have to say it's nice to see some new additions to the genre, they are always welcome and the added people that get interested in these types of games might even trickle down to games like CloD and RoF and God knows these games needs all the support they can get.

MSFT keeps changing their way of doing things, instead of fixing the problems with what they have already released. They are doomed to mediocrity as they persist in this fashion.

mxmadman 04-06-2012 04:33 PM

All I needed to hear was no track ir support to know that free was overpriced for this. Especially when free to play games are always the most expensive if you actually want the amount of content that is standard in the industry.

How sad would it be should the CloD dev.team behave the same way...

Actually while no official date has been announced, they are working in implementing Track IR in a future update.

simast 04-07-2012 12:58 PM

What's really horrible about this sim is their DLC policy. They have just released a new A6M2 Zero plane as DLC without a cockpit. A Japanese Zero plane in Hawaii/Pearl Harbor environment. Their marketing team is nuts.

Chivas 04-07-2012 06:03 PM

If the new IL-2 series gets sorted, and the SDK is released, this could be an opportunity to draw the FSX crowd of modders and thus flyers into the IL-2 series. This was part of Olegs original plan, but unfortunately they are still trying to get the new IL-2 game engine working.

I can see IL-2 servers in the future with just civilian aircraft flying over detailed terrain, especially when they can enable DX11. I would have downloaded MS Flight, just to fly around Hawaii, but I didn't find the MS Flight terrain believable enough. I was expecting more since MS Flight had dumbed down everything else they would have developed spectacular terrain, but it didn't happen. That said it could be improved in the future.

retrojet 04-07-2012 09:06 PM

you would think a bright guy like Bill Gates would have the balls to tell his MS Flight team/ business dept. to turn off the landing lights on their way out...

Theres no such thing as a free flight sim, DLC... I wish I had the dosh...

Skoshi Tiger 04-08-2012 12:19 AM

The flight instructor just told me to beat up the wedding yatch and to land 30 yards away from the yatch! Bush pilot or what?

Should be stripped of her Instructors licence and be drummed out of the industry!

And what the hell was all that with the Ukulele? Spit girl wasn't so bad after all. At least she kept her mouth shut! ;)

Has anyone flown in an Icon? I thought the flight model was a little bit simplistic? Felt like I was running on rails.

I don't think the real Icon is ready yet, its advance orders only, but its meant to be simple I heard.

As for MS Flight ... LOL

you pay for the cockpit later ;) ;)

Then come the working gauges animations

Troll2k 04-08-2012 02:49 AM

The Icon 5 started out as a diy kit plane. So there are plenty already out there.I have been told that once the FAA changed the certification qualifications somebody bought the rights and planned to put it into production.Whether or not it is out in the wild or just taking preorders he did not know.

kestrel79 04-09-2012 08:16 PM

First the Mustang without a cockpit and now a Zero? And they expect me to pay for it? At least model the whole plane first.

I'll hold back on any purchase until it's working, but I'm impressed how Stearman handles without any auto-controls , engine controls too.
Like a leaf in the wind, very light airplane.
