Two things you must have - Tell your Parents, Tell your Girlfriends, Sell your pet.

I play a lot on ATAG and I use Teamspeak 3. After hearing so many people talk or type info in the chat. These should be on the top of your wish list.

1) TrackIR5 best ever - Never lose sight of your enemy

2) Teamspeak 3 - If you are playing on ATAG - Use TS3 (Its free), there are many flight groups and helps 100% to tell each other where enemy are and call for help

So your Birthday must be coming up in the next 364 days and TrackIR5 could be a great gift from loved ones or pooled cash from friends. If you want it quicker then sell that pet rock.

yeah.

track ir is a game changer, but i dotn advise it to anyone who ahs a small screen. so unless you have a 32'' or a dual triple screen setup, track ir will be very inituitive ( so tells my experience)

oh, and about TS, join a squad. il2 is nothing until you join a squad. there are plenty out there, and a lot are on constat recruit with LOTS of training programs.

JG52Krupi 03-16-2012 09:36 AM

I have a 24" screen track ir works fine and before that I had a 17"....

i cant use it in a single 17'', feel rather claustrofobic. 32'' is an exageration, 24 shjould be enough. i tried a 21.5'', and it still wasnt enough for me to feel confortable.

cant agree with that....
i have a small 17" screen, but track ir is still very intuitive for me.
it felt great from the first minute.

I notice you didn't mention " Tell your wife" in the title.......

I fired my girlfriend so now I have TIR, 24inc 120Hz screen, Thrutmaster Hotas Warthog, SIMPED rudderpedals and an outstanding computer. I kept my dog because she was happy and contented. She thought it was a good idea with kickass equipment ;-)

Have a nice weekend.

Screamadelica 03-16-2012 10:31 AM

Dogs are such great friends like that.

6S.Tamat 03-16-2012 11:02 AM

I have freetrack and with a little expense of 20 euros i let it function very well. It is almost two years now and nobody of my wing never felt the difference with the other people with Track ir.
So if you can manage to build a little cirtuit like the ones that are builded by children it is a good choice.

carguy_ 03-16-2012 11:52 AM

For TS I agree. Very important tool and lot of laughs with squad buddies.

TIR however I find to be just a nice addition. Tried it out, liked it very much, don`t have money for it to this day. Didn`t stop me from being a top LW ace though.

You'd probably be just that much better with one :)

19" CRT here (hey! Don't laugh. It keeps me warm in the winter months) and Track IR has worked flawlessly since version 1. When FB incorporated ENHANCED Tr. IR mode, I never had a problem with centering or situational awareness. I can't recommend it highly enough.

vanelle 03-16-2012 04:33 PM

I've bought a track ir 5 along with the track clip, such an improvement.
Might jump on ATAG's ts when I am going to fly online.

But for the track ir users I recomment a track clip pro, better than the track clip wich goes on a cap.

Well, your head doesn't get as hot and itchy in warm weather with a pro-clip, but my pro-clip broke because they're actually made of cheap cheese.

So now I have to fly with a hot and itchy napper. :(

P.S. As it happens, I think there are too many wires around with a pro-clip, they always seem to get in the way, no matter what I do.

zipper 03-16-2012 11:32 PM

Bought TIR5 w/pro clip about a year ago, spent a fair amount of time dialing it in ... haven't used it since.

awwelll.

That's really weird. I just plugged mine in, clipped it to my headphones, opened up the tir screen where you see the reflection and head movement.

I press F12 to reset to center posiiton before i start the game and usually every now and then in game so it re-callibrates my center view. It is flawless.

LOOOOVE IT and never a problem.

TIP of the day. If you have TrackIR and pro clip. tape the wires to your headphone wires so they don't get in the way and can't break

Wot? you don't think I did? The thing is made of cheese I tells yer.

It wasn't the wires that broke, it was the poxy 1mm thick plastic clip things in the pokey bit. You''ll remember these words, I promise!

So true Dutch, my clip pro broke down to pieces progressively. When I fixed it, another piece broke down. This thing must have been engineered to be made of steel but then someone did a clever value engineering and gave the drawings to a cheap plastic mill. A 0.1 mm plastic swivel with 0.1 plastic pivots cannot last a lot. By the way the normal hat clip works better.

I mock your words and laugh at your little pokey bit. AAAAHAHAHAHA!!!

On another not... What type of cheese is it made of? jarlsberg, red leicester or Smoked Dutch perhaps?

Every cloud has a silver lining ;)

Well in that case I can only recommend you fix the problem with a nice glass of Red wine

i just fell down the stairs. Not to serious, so people please hold back on the well wishes, get well soon cards and flowers. How random is that? Dutch would say its Kama... but I am still laughing at his "pokey bit".

Sometimes the best defense is attack.

drewpee 03-17-2012 09:11 AM

I have over the years upgraded from a cheap stick to a good quality stick and throttle. Then it was rudder peddles. That was a big leap forward. 2 years ago I got my hands on a second hand trackir setup, that was probably the best purchase to date. Only problem is the led fingers breaking and needing repair but it just needed gluing.

Gabelschwanz Teufel 03-17-2012 10:24 PM

TIR is a must have now. I can't imagine what I did all those years without it. The rudder pedals are nice, but I could do without them. They sure do help on takeoff and landing, though.

julien673 03-18-2012 01:56 AM

I still have the old FF2 ( buy for cfs2 when its came out. .... . . .. ) ... my next pc will come whit something more.... hope soon lol

JG5_emil 03-18-2012 04:29 AM

If you get TIR 5 and the Track Clip pro thingie that clips on to your head phones then be very very gentle with it. Mine broke after I put my headset gently on the desk. Lot of other complains about them being fragile.

ATAG_Doc 03-18-2012 05:38 AM

You know how many times I've heard this? Probably know a dozen people in the last 12 months tell me this. Still I didn't pay attention and mine broke after a week of using it. If you buy one buy a roll of duct tape while you're at it.

Here's what I came up with for my Freetrack setup, you could probably do the same for your track ir, it's made of good ol' fashion wood with some velcro.

It is a bit fragile. I have a fairly heavy-build set of headphones, Medusa surround sound, which I bought for the surround sound and because the headset cable is reasonably strong, about 4mm dia (I have a graveyard of headphones with thin failed cables). The Pro Clip clips onto the headband above the left earphone and I use black domestic tiewraps to tie the Pro Clip cable to the headphone cable. The headset hangs on a hook when I'm not using it and I handle it carefully when I put them on/off. In short, treat it with care and it will be ok. Yes, that spindly piece of molding used to flip off if I knocked it but black insulating tape is my friend.

Can vouch for the duct tape it works on mine too

In the old days I used also a stick-out-thingy for my Trackir2 reflector. Attached to the top of the headset headband, it stuck out in front with the reflector on the end to improve the sensitivity. "Dick-head" came to mind, as my then 12 year old daughter pointed out :)
It was also used by other IL-2'ers I know but I won't name them :D

The Pro Clip is only a waste of money if you're incurably clumsy, the benefits far outweigh the need to be careful with it. It could of course be better designed and made of aluminium I suppose.

Robert 03-18-2012 05:07 PM

There was a picture in the IL2 1946 EXTRAs DVD. It had one of the developers with a strange looking Track IR reflector which reminded me of a small serving spoon dangling on his nose. I always wondered how that worked. It was before 6Dof, and now that that is incorporated into the game, what does he use now?

I have had my trackIR5 for 2years at least and my cats love to nibble on the ends where the light emitting diodes are. But no break or damage yet.

I do treat them with care. The Pro clip not the cats... Furry buggers! get into everything.

jayrc 03-19-2012 12:19 AM

cell phone charger cords, macbook charger cord, earbud headphones, messing around behind my pc, you would think they would get zapped but I guess not.
