now it's time to buy Cliffs of Dover... but am I ready for it?

Hi fellows,
I'm reading this forum and waiting since 6 years.. thanks to all your comments I think CloD will be higly optimizated and corrected after the new incoming patch..
The reason because I didn't buy it before is my poor rig (see below) and i'd like to know if someone of you has something similar to compare and if you can fly "good".
I know that SLI isn't yet optimized and I read some guides in this forum to sqweeze the maximum by it.. does it really work?
I'm hoping to be able to buy a newer card soon anyway..
thanks for your suggestions and... Luthier keep up the good work! I think that so many peaple like me are just waiting ot there..

CPU E8500 @ 3.8Ghz
VGA 2x EN8800GTX SLI
RAM 8Gb DDR2
OS WIN7 64

Before I got my current build I ran it on a 3.5GHz E7400, so I think your CPU will work well enough. I did have a GTX 460 (also OCed) though.

I'm not sure how well your GPUs will work. I don't think they'd really cut it with the current version (I could be wrong), but depending on what exactly was optimized in the next patch you may be okay with what you have.

S!

Grifo, I would give it a go, your CPU is well OCed and that 8800 GTX is one of the best cards I have had. You will need to reduce some settings but I believe you can fly COD with your rig. The problem could be the amount of VRAM, but using a RAMDISK like is suggested here in the forums could alleviate that.

I fly it with a resolution of 1680x1050 on medium settings on this:

i7 920 at 2.7 Ghz
Ati 4890 1GB
3GB of RAM
win7 x64

I get anywhere between 30 and 60 FPS, depending on the terrain i'm flying over.

A friend of mine gets similar performance at 1920x1080 and similar settings to me with this system:

i5 (don't know the exact clock speed)
nVidia GTS 2xx (can't remember his exact model, but it's essentially the same as the 8800/9800 cards), probably with less than 1GB of video RAM
4GB of RAM
win7 x64

In short, i think you can run it as long as you keep the detail settings around medium.

Blackdog:

You can EASILY oveclock your I7 920 to 3.2Ghz. I've been running mine on stock cooling for about 2 years with no issues.

Grifo 02-24-2012 01:52 AM

thanks guys for your replys! I will sleep better knowing that i will finally be able to enjoby this great sim without buying a new pc.. Given your feedbacks my situation isn't so bad as i thought.. And will get better after the patch so i'm going to buy! Thanks again and see you soon on servers..

Mine is the very early C0 stepping that runs a bit hotter and not the slightly later and better overclocking D0 chip.

Another reason is that i have some kind of heat issue i can't pinpoint currently: flying the Ju88 (and only the 88 ) results in my PC rebooting due to overheating within less than a minute (checked it with temp monitoring utilities that output log files).

It could be that the thermal paste between CPU and cooler needs replacing, but i'm getting idle temps of 45C which seem a bit high, even after cleaning the dust off my fans and the interior of my case with a small leaf-blower.

The other possibility is my GPU, an MSI Cyclone Ati 4890. That thing has a pretty monster cooler for stock standards and larger heat pipes than other cards of its generation. The thing is, i don't know if the rest of the case is well laid-out to allow the airflow of hot air to escape. I know the GPU cooler is working well, i just don't know if the dissipated heat escapes fast enough from inside the case.

Otherwise, it could be the case that the GPU emits a lot of heat that gets trapped in the box and overheats the CPU or GPU.

It's kind of weird, because i've never had an issue before. This thing only happens after the latest patch, so i'm hoping that when the next graphics optimizations arrive in the next patch it won't tax it so much. Otherwise i might have to start moving things around in the case.

I was having shutdown issues with another game, have you used a program like speedfan or realtemp? Using those I was able to pinpoint that the temperature that caused shutdown was my CPU with one core going to 95c(!). I replaced the stock heatsink with an aftermarket cooler and my temps haven't gone above 60 under full load (E8400).

If you look at which component is causing the heating issue using a program that tracks each component you might get an idea, I found that my GPU was always really cool, so that eliminated that from the worries.

@Grifo, give this post a look, you will find it intersting

Some thermal paste needs replacing after a couple of years apparently so you might want to look into that!

Grifo
I am playing CoD fine with appropriate settings with my rig. I suggest starting with medium settings and see how it performs.
AntiEpilepsy filter off (unless you have epilepsy...)
Grass off
Shadows off
Roads off
You might be able to turn some of these back on (except the Epi filter) if your system can handle it. There will be a patch soon that should help a lot with optimisation.

Come on Grifo!

No sence in waiting to buy the sim!

Even if you dont fly it theres a ton stuff just to get all the buttons sorted/planes started that if you do now will shorten the learnng curve when the new video card comes.

See ya in the air!

Yeah, that was my guess too. I mean, i could fly the 88 just fine up until a few months ago. I know the extra cockpit textures and dials that are visible from the 88's default position put a load on the GPU because i can hear the fan pick up a lot of speed, while the 111 with it's mostly glass nose doesn't give my any trouble at all.

I will probably have to run some temp monitoring utilities and have them log temps for CPU and GPU to a txt file, start the sim, get in an 88 and wait until the reboot happens, then check the log file.

I still think it's a case of the GPU giving off heat and rising the ambient air temp in the case, wihch the CPU can't cope with, but i hope some thermal paste will help.

ok guys: finally bought, inrtalled and.. ENJOYING! performance is not a strong point with my poor rig (can't wait for the holy patch), but i'm learning how to menage my engine and landing without bumping.. Is more than sufficient for me now, and i'm happy to confirm that both my sli gpu are working properly! Not serious testing yet, but only checked with nvidia monitor. No test in fps also, but i fly pretty good with mid settings and.. Having a lot of fun! Thanks 1c!

Sounds like I should do the same. Still playing 1946 waiting for the improvements to the engine.

Karatekid 04-24-2012 01:48 PM

I asking the same question

I want buy the game,right after the holy patch,because i can't play at the moment,my rig is too old (AMD 7750 BE @3,2,Sapphire 4830@ 4850 512mb,2GB RAM)

What are you think guys, can i play with med-low settings with enjoyable FPS after the patch?
