What is going to make this fun for you?
It seems everyone is focused on the same four things right now.
Game Performance Number of flyable Aircraft Flight Modeling Realism Controlable AA/Vehicles Those are all great, and I am right there will all of you in saying it would be great to have all of those. . . but what about game content? Let's say that tomorrow there is a patch released that gives everyone +100FPS, 200 aircraft, 50 different tanks, trucks, AA guns, and everything has the perfect flight model and damage, and tracers, and blah, blah, blah. . . NOW WHAT? You have all that stuff, but is it going to make the game fun for you? Are you happy to just fly around in a circle trying to spot the airplane above you all day? What manner of content or play-modes is going to make you want to put off going to work or delay getting romantic with the wife? What is going to make this fun for you? My Wishlist: *Disclaimer, while most of the modes could be dismissed as "Ugh Arcade crap" think about it. Each one requires, and focuses on one or more skills that are required to be a better fighter pilot in the real game. Just because a play mode is included, doesn't mean you have to play it. That's like saying you want a silver car, nobody else should have a difference coloured car! If you don't like a play mode, move on. We don't need to hear your opinion on whether or not we should go pick up a copy of Wings of Prey or HAWX. Something akin to SEOW, where everything you do has some manner of impact on the end result. Spash 3 enemy fighters, that's three less then have to work with next mission. Let the enemy bombers level your runway? That's less fuel and fewer bombs you have to work with. Bust your undercarriage while coming in for a landing? That aircraft will be out of the fight for a good week. Lose 1/2 your squadron in a single engagement? That's going to be tricky next mission when the enemy only has to deal with 1/2 the number of your fighters, etc. Some manner of bigger battle that could take a few hours, a few days, or weeks. Have the settings and stats savable on a server so every Tuesday night is "Jakes's Battle of Britain Night" where the guy running it starts it up again, saving the stats from last time so if last week the Germans lost 3/4 of their bombers, this week they only have 1/4 left to work with. It could be some manner of "ticket counting" or the host could just set it up so each side has a specific number of aircraft and pilots to work with. Racing: How about a map or mod where Pylons are added to the Thames, so that we can re-enact those RedBull air-races with out Hurricanes, Spits, and 109's? Have waypoints set up so that the game actually tracks the time and makes sure they adhere to the rules and course. It's not "HISTORICAL" but it's fun for a lot of people, and sometimes it's nice to break up the historical missions with something fun in between, plus adding the SU-26 might bring some new blood into the genre when they figure out that shooting stuff is more fun than just flying around pylons. You could also have a mode where it's more of a drag race where a pilot has to go from point A to point B, and the pilot who has the best Engine/Navigation management is the winner. Obviously at the beginning of each game of this type the players would have to agree on what aircraft to play as. Can't have Spits racing Stukas. Capture the flag: Having two enemy teams face off on a smallish map. They have to cap the enemy flag by flying through the opposing team's hangar. Once you have the flag your altitude is capped and you can't leave a specific general area so people don't just grab the flag, and head to the far end of the map at 20,000 feet and delay the game. Like the above idea, it's just something fun that could draw in new people. Trick Flying: Have a game-mode where the servers keeps track of aerobatic maneuvers and such. There's a huge market for people who liked to play skateboarding games and get points for the stuff they did, how about a version for want-to-be aerobatic pilots. A little map with a grandstand, and you've got the venue. There are a lot of people who play CLOD who boast about their "stick prowess" we can finally make them put their money where their mouth is and make it official. King of the Castle/Gunnery Training: Have a mode where enemies spawn from random directions and the human players have unlimited ammo. The point of the game is to see who can get the most kills and last the longest. The aircraft start out easy with trainers, 108's and obsolete bombers at first, but the aircraft spawning gradually get harder and more advanced. In the end the last person left alive with the highest kill count wins. The number of hits/misses would be recorded, and the server would tell people how many controlled surfaces/engines/Rads/fuel tanks they hit vs random body shots. Accuracy Bombing: Have a map where players get to practice their bombing skills on targets that record how close they were to the target, and maybe even include tips on how to improve their technique. Different rounds would require different bombing techniques. Maybe one is dive, another level, another skip, etc. Maybe there are some scenarios set up where unorthodox methods are required to hit the target like climbing at the last second to lob it into the side of a cliff that you could never normally hit with dive or level bombing. I don't have all the answers, and honestly, I'm just really tired of trying to enjoy this game when the only games online are "uninspired furball", with everyone seeing how low they can fly. When I used to play IL-2 online with my pals we'd do a dogfight or two at the beginning to get everyone pumped up and give others time to get set up and log in. 90% of our online flying was CO-OP missions, and occasionally SEOW which was the most amazing online experience ever since everyone knew each other and we set up teams, different mumble channels, and has discussed objectives and strategy before each mission. I'm not slagging the devs, but Oleg's idea of "One multiplayer mode will suit everyone's needs" is not my cup of tea. |
TBH if the next patch did contain all that then i wouldnt want or need any of those
|
All I really really want, and this is something that no other game ever has done to the best of my knowledge and I cannot figure out why, is a co-op career mode. I just want to play a (preferably dynamic) campaign with a few friends where we can fly in the same squadron. That's all I need and this will be the only flight sim I care about in the world.
|
I think most of that is already possible with the FMB and scripting.
SEOW (attrition etc). I believe scripting can do this but I'm not certain. Racing. Well, we have radar towers, airfield tower and Barrage Balloons to fly around. Capture the Flag. You can set circular areas in FMB and detect with scripting when they are entered, put one around a hangar or an airfield. Trick Flying. Don't know. King of the Castle. You can spawn a/c at different distances and locations to arrive at different times, if you don't keep on top of them they'll get on top of you. You can also do 'last man standing' on-line. Accuracy bombing. Don't know if CoD supports a 'target' but you could create one with rings of objects and script their values. |
The problem I have with this "attrition" model is that it doesn't take aircraft/pilot reserves or bringing unservicable aircraft back into action into consideration. Or who is actually saying that the player is going to meet the same squadron again? Ain't it possible that it's given a day off to recuperate and repair any damaged aircraft?
Simply put the game needs stability and a better performance before anything else. Then the next big issue for me is a campaign engine, preferable just as in the ancient Red Baron II and not that wannabe-strategy campaign that BoBII has. :-| |
All i want for now is no CTD and COOPs.

1. Searching the net for mods and custom maps that might require a lot of work to get running, plus making sure all the people he's playing with have everything installed exactly the same way so they can play. 2. Having everything already set up in the actual game so that you don't need mods, you don't have to worry about everyone having to install the stuff flawlessly, and you don't have to have someone sit in their plane on the ground with a stopwatch or in zoomed mode making judgment calls on who won, or who did what the best. Space Communist and furbs have the right idea. Both want some manner of play mode where they, and a friend(s) can work together towards a common objective. This is a deeper mode of gameplay that I think a lot of people want. |
better multiplayer, similar to waht we had in il2, SEOW, SUL score point system, TRUE coops.
thats about it. |
Fix the graphics, optimize, FM fix. Thats all I want. A working gold version of CoD.
|
My first vote would go with the SEOW..
Second would be a capture the flag style of game play. I was also thinking of a mode of game play where Both Allied and Axis had ship taking off from there perspective coasts. If either one has a ship or ships make it across the channel.. then that side wins. the only problem is that the allied's only have one bomber. It could be done just with an allied convoy headed to France(with Allied defending and Axis attacking.( Farther the convoy gets out, the harder it would be for the Allieds to Defend) Simple concept.... and would be easy to do..;) |
If all the bugs are fixed inc Ai & crashes,& the new FPS/XFIRE/SLI graffics work ok without stutters then I would like the Co-operative gui to work on similar lines to the one in il2 .
Other than that more ships ,allied and Axis with to start with manable AAA,then possibly more ship control. More flyable aircraft would be cool for CLod ,especialy the Beaufighter that had the first onboard radar system at that period.A worthy adversary for the Bf 110. For BoM the BF 110-G with its Radar too. |

COOP and Online wars and it will feel like the good old JG52 il2:1946 days are back again :D
Of course I would give some parts of my body for a Fw190 ;) |

All I want is a good simulator. If I want to play capture the flag ill go outside and do it ir fire up halo. If we had a functioning sim the community would have already created dozens of campaigns |
ummm, ok
i don't fall into the category of just being focused in the 4 categories you start with(tho #3 has some interest), working comms and AI are the areas i'm patiently waiting for improvements in. As to your ideas, there are some good ones in there, tho some could be done now- ie the racing, map SDK would be rather helpful here i think(and hopefully adopted into game 'properly' at some point) Trick flying/aerobatics- done right it could almost be a sim in itself. The scoring system would be 'interesting' to say the least Gunnery/bombing accuracy yeah- but how about the gunnery being a target towed behind a plane . You get to see the target close up after flight to see how bad your shooting is:-P However i think you are missing a trick (and probably the majority of CoD users) by ignoring the offline side of these ideas and as CoD is meant to be 'the same' this should be relatively simple to incorporate such ideas in both. just my thoughts |
Variety is the spice of life, it is what is sorely needed for CLOD.. obviously when the game is fixed, a nice bag of planes ect would be fun and keep things fresh..

Excellent idea, I remember playing Original IL2 non-stop years ago, CLOD just isnt fun it seems to me.

You ended your statement with "Period". Are you on your period? Being a Gynecologist, I know how uncomfortable menstrual cramps can be. Try soaking in a how bath to relieve them. |
First off, the performance has to be improved, which should be addressed in the next patch.
Then the AI, and Commands, without that there is no game. Luckily I can get my flying fix online as AI and Commands aren't critical. The game engines FMB, Triggers, etc should allow for all the games people can think of. Far more than what was possible with the old IL-2 which was the whole point of building a new game engine. |
- Radio navigation, GCI, and if possible, electronic-assisted night bombing devices such as Knickebein or X-Gerät. Airbone radar is my ultimate dream.
- Better management for multicrew bombers: gunners that inform incoming attack, bomb aimer who takes care of the bombsight, navigator that keeps informing me about my position (should not be always accurate), pilot who can do simple things such as flying straight when I'm using the bombsight, or flying to a certain heading. |

Level Stabaliser sensative to "trimelevator & rudder" would probably sort the stablity for the bombadier position,iL2 does it to a point but you tend to loose alt if your not careful.I Try to set the Bombsite before take off so it is an approximation of setting for when reaching the target.

An Air Superiority mode.
Make an area in the centre of the map a capture zone, the team with the most aircraft in the zone capture it. It would encourage more people to meet up in a certain area for dogfighting. |

Squadron Series- The most fun I ever had was flying as sim was the S3 events on Warbirds back 10 years or more ago. Getting a historical scenario whipped up with commanders on each side and squads given specific assignments by those commanders. Victory is a completion of objectives within a preset loss range and for the other side denying victory to the aggressor is victory. Maybe a good commander will win or maybe the better squads? Limited lives-If you bail over friendly territory you get another plane after a set time out. Die and you can go back to the quake server and practice. Events have a preset start time and a limited length. No AI no co-op. All living targets.
To me, and I know a lot of others, flying with your squaddies in a coordinated objective-based manner is the most compelling reason to fly and by far the most satisfying. Anyone can get good enough flying to shoot down plenty of enemies but it is something else to keep a cohesive formation in the air and fight as a team. Now, can we do this without any changes to the existing CLOD? Yes probably, but maybe some tools to help organize multi-squad missions, like scoring tools, squad based briefings, recon photos and waypoint maps would help. -SKUD |

I'm pretty easily pleased. Convincing AI chatter would improve things immensely. The current setup has just FOUR voice actors. Each one sounds like he's pulling words out of a hat and reading them with different expressions.
That and ai crews that actually do their jobs (but that will never happen). |

"Don't agree with me?! Then you suck! take my football go home!!!!" And since you've been so jolly Ill just say what I thought to begin with-your ideas are just terrible. God awful truthfully. See there's already a flight sim that has a long illustrious history, with a huge following-its called IL2, and it didn't have any of that. It didnt need any of that. What it had was a working base that third party fellows improved upon. |
What on earth is this?
Like others have said, performance and AI are the most glaringly obvious needs right now. |

I think CloD - once its stability issues and AI problems are sorted out - could be a very fine base for such a setup, especially since we can actively use AI formations for types rarely flown by human players (bombers, Stukas, recon etc) but a few more things have to be added, yet. First I can think of is the ability to designate, target and destroy (and read from log) static area targets such as airfields, supply dumps, factories, supply lines (i.e. railway lines which can be broken) and similar targets. Right now that is not possible. Second would be an easier FMB, or rather the scripts part of it, since unless you know your stuff in C or similar languages you're stuck with very basic functionalities. |

As for 3rd part add-ons. Those are great, but it hinders additional players joining the game community because they then have to start searching the net to find the right mod, then the right mod patch, and if it isn't installed just right then they can't play, and have to start over again. Having additional play modes actually built into the game engine allows them the skip that. I've been to other forums where people have attempted to play IL-2 online using HSFX, or SEOW and have given up due to the bugginess and complexity of getting everything perfect. You don't like the idea of integrated SEOW in the game, you never intend to try racing, or CTF, that's fine. This isn't the thread for you. Go post in the "lets fly in a circle as low as we can" thread and sperg out about your kill/death ratios. The rest of us are talking about additional content and game modes that we think should have/be included in the game. Not being a dick is as easy as reading the OP, and then not posting here. How about you wait for Luthier to post another 15,000 poly woodpile and then add your "+1, this will make the game perfect" comment. |
Personally I don't see the need for the developers putting in different "game modes".
Everything needed to create different game ideas should be in the editor, if it isn't already I hope we get the tools that are needed eventually. For instance, a racing scenario could be created with making it so every player becomes his own "team/nation", setting up a few gates with area triggers inside and then making it so the triggers must be activated in the order of the race route (number of activations = number of laps), then set up victory conditions, the first to activate all triggers get x points, nr 2 gets y points and so on. I've not put much time into the editor so I don't know if this is possible or not. Setting up different scenarios fairly easily should be the goal of a good editor as that expands the game immensely. All the good MP maps I've played in IL-2 had good clear goals of what to protect and what to attack and it was clear where to fly and what to do. IMO clear objectives makes team play a lot more likely and immersion is also heightened. |

Game Performance Count into "game performance" : online coop mechanics effective AI radio comms and I`m happy. I do not need more flyables. I need coops to be possible. Even if we can`t come up something along the lines of SEOW, making generic coops workable would be a great start. I am 100% sure that it would be enough for most onliners for another 10-12 months until we get an online war started. Also let me remind you that VEF/BW/IOW had far more complicated mechanics than that you list as SEOW. In wars where resources mattered, the red side often struggled, as their players were unable to withstand any type of streaks of going home in your machine (be it damaged or not, still counts as intact). I also want to type out, that with current CEM and MAYBE more realistic DM for Russian planes, things can get even harder for reds. With listed above content we can manage a good year from now till BoM comes or even a next addon. Most of it is here in the game as of now. It needs to get working and it needs to get it working soon. |

Also having to copy your game directory to another folder so that the latest patch doesn't automatically corrupt your modded game is a bit of a pain. Worst of all, new players have to do a certain number of things to get on the same page and be able to fly with the rest of us... 1. Install/Patch (no problem) 2. Find out what mod offers what they want. 3. Find a download link that's not a porn-redirect or expired. 4. Install the mod and hopefully not screw it up. 5. Get online and play. The biggest obstacle to this person getting online is that they have to talk to the "I'm old and hate new people and new things scare me and make me angry" forum members here. Does this new person want to have to listen to the usual suspects tell them to go play Wings of Prey a million times just because they want to practice without CEM or limited Ammo? Maybe they will ignore that, but they will still have to sift through a million "Steam is the devil" and "Why don't we have the correct number of rivets on the 110's wheel well cover?" to find the thread with the correct post to direct them to the proper mod. Why do the MG devs always have to rely on the fans to make their games interesting? |
I see what you're looking for with this thread. You want to know about what gameplay mechanics we want, not little fiddly details like FM or AI tweaks.
So, for gameplay elements. Co-op mission / campaign generator. The IL-2 DCG does an OK job of it, Lowengrin made a much better one. This is badly needed. Nobody wants to spend hours and hours making single missions. Something like SEOW for online VS campaigns. Now that I think about this, these things were alluded to as things that would come with CLOD back when it was called Storm of War... what happened? One fiddly technical bit that I just can't help but bring up (sorry); this game sorely needs a map / plane icon system like 777 Studios did for Rise of Flight. It's the only thing I can think of to end the current situation with the online community right now, which is people demanding full realism and then flying at treetop level (or below because LOL no tree collision) because there's no reflection off of cockpit glass making planes damn near invisible when they're below you. |

Anyway, IMO, having different servers running different types of maps/scenarios would not be as dividing for the community as creating the game modes that you suggest. Having racing and the like as standard parts of the game would maybe draw more people to the product, but on the other hand, most of them would not be interested in the heart of the sim, namely realistic WW2 air combat. Thus the community would become divided in different parts that play the sim for very different reasons. And honestly I think that something like that could damage the IL-2 brand. And don't get me wrong, I really don't mind different game modes, I would probably enjoy many of them, but I just don't think they should be built-in or at least not something you promote the game with. If interest is low for sims right now, the solution cannot be to incorporate different types of gameplay, this will only water down the product and ultimately transform it to something else. Who knows, maybe simulations have a bright future, with the amount of gamers today there's bound to be a few that will turn an eye to sims, but for that to happen sims need to be something different, not just compilationa of game experiences that can easily be had elsewhere. Simulations must be distinctly different from other games. |

When my friends and I would play a round of SEOW we'd do random dogfights, or a co-op bombing mission, or do formation flying, or anything other than straight-up dogfighting since that got boring fast and we were waiting for everyone to get read for the real show (SEOW). Adding additional gameplay modes doesn't divide a community. It give them some way to kill time while still honing their skills while waiting for the real mission to start, or a quick diversion when they got shot down 5 minutes into a 2 hour op. I think the community has spoken and the developers will probably listen. "Don't give us anything other than dogfight, just focus on making more and more obscure or marginally different versions of planes and we'll be happy. All we want to do is fly dogfight after dogfight, and make sure this sim never becomes popular because we are afraid of new content or players." I don't know how many time I've read on these forums that members here would rather the game not be made than have realism options or have ROF style icons, or something else that would get other people interested. It's like just knowing that somewhere out there a player isn't flying "full switch" makes their blood boil. It seems that the CLOD community is sharing the same mission statement with the RIAA. "Anything new is EVIL! We will stick together in our little group, our numbers dwindling as our product dies a slow inglorious death because we didn't want to change with the times!" I'm not saying turn this into X-Wing vs. BF-109, I'm saying be open to new ideas. Unfortunately the devs listen to the people here and at the SU-26 forums, and that's why we have the correct font on the Hawker Hurricane's seat-recliner handle, but no CO-OP. Oleg, and now Luthier think that this very small, very insane, vocal minority represents the entire potential market for CLOD. The big numbers that are still left in the PC gaming community are MMORPG's and First person shooters. The MMORPG's save users stats, their accomplishments, and emphasize that they are part of a larger group, and their actions mean something. Even FPS's are starting to save stats and giving players upgrades and awards and other trinkets. They may be simple, be at least they acknowledge that players want their gaming to mean something other than, "HAHA, I shot down 1.5 planes for every time I died in this dogfight!" They are also really emphasizing teamwork oriented play, because they have done studies and know that players like to accomplish something as a group, and not just see who has the highest number of kills at the end of the round. Those studios, unlike 1C have money to spend on marketing research, and other things that ensure they deliver the game the public wants. All MG/1C did was listen to people complain that Tower bridge wasn't the right shade of gray, that the fields has obviously been tended by modern tractors, and that OMG WHY IS THE PILOT SO SMALL!?! That's exactly why we are almost a year into the gam's release and we still don't have a properly working game. I was hoping that there were enough reasonable people on these forums to echo what other people wanted (outside of here) but that's not the case. I've been to other forums where people ask if CLOD is work buying and the answer is usually, "It's broken, there is no game content and the community is horrible. They also mention that 90% of the posts are just "+1" and too many people end their posts by restating their user name and saluting "~S" which is just sad and makes actual veterans cringe. |
People will not have to build their own missions if they don't want too. There are missions and campaigns available online and the list will continue to grow. If these missions don't suit their sensibilities then its quite easy to learn how to make basic missions and then more complex mission with how to's posted by community members.
The new game engine, FMB and Triggers will allow far more mission types that the original series. At the moment the developers don't have the time to make them as they are still behind the eight ball finishing and optimizing the game engine etc. |
i want a more full complete quick misison builder with autotriggers and... very complete, SORPRISE ME with the mission.
 |
Full real CEM
Whilst waiting for the 'patch' I downloaded the Spitfire in the Microsoft Flight Sim. The graphics are nothing compared to CoD, and there is no shoot em up bang bangs, but how cool was it to get the thing airborne, using every button and knob in the cockpit. Maintaining temp etc was also cool and got me thinking how awesome it would be to have the same CEM in CoD.
It was a bit of work learning it but it was heaps of fun. I can imagine that in a dog fight you would be doing a fair bit of work so you don't over heat the engine. So I'm guessing I'm looking for full real, moving completely away from any resemblance to an arcade game. |

I remember the historical scenarios in Aces High. That was great fun! Felt more like bing there instead of senseless furballing over a certain spot on the map. We got lucky and decimated the incoming bomber formation before escorts arrived, so our job was done :D That felt like an achievement! |

it somehow bugs me that clod does not offer the whole package...(hopefully it will someday) i often imagined sitting in a real 109, i couldnt even start the engine, because i would be searching for the i button.whilst it is a bit more detailed than its predecessor, there are still sooo many triggers, levers and buttons not working in the cockpits. also some gauges don't work correctly, and CEM, while im happy that we have it, isnt working properly and could and should be way more detailed. radiators dont have any effect on airspeed.....and so on.im no expert, but i would imagine that flying the real thing is much more demanding than it is in the game. give us all the workload like one would have in real life and im happy.lowering the realism options would make those happy who like it a little less demanding. |

Almost more than the fixing i just want a interface that is easy to use rather than the current awkward mess, and the QMB back for quick flying goodness as I do not have much free time alas. That Modded QMB from old IL2 was great for quick scenarios...

I also witnessed other missions, where the fighter escort was lured by 2nd fighter group, which left the bombers unprotected. What a feast it was. One by one, the fatties fell from the sky, rarely with burning engines, often completely torn apart. Luftwaffles took their turn and so on until the ammo ran out. Same I can say about simulating desperate LW offensive missions in Normandy, such as airfield raids. I mean I knew it was all lost already, but I couldn`t help but take 5 of them down before they made me bail out. |

I use to play the older flight Simulators back in the day and i remember how you could 'somewhat' create your own model planes and fly them. This would be awesome for this game as well. Be able to create your own flying machines and have fun with the physics engine itself. I dont care how hard or time consuming it would be to add this feature.. Im just saying my idea on what i would want to make this game more fun if everything was working perfect ect... |
