IL-2 Cliffs of Dover Cliffs of Dover Optimization and Performance Thread

Here is a checklist you can consider for better performance. This is meant to be a summation of information that can help you boost your performance and better understand the sim's settings.

*THIS IS A WORK AND PROGRESS AND WILL BE UPDATED WITH YOUR HELP, WILL BE REWORKED AFTER UPCOMING PATCH**

Here are some notes that might help you optimize your fps or realize your capped potential. Please share your own positive feedback or experiences with performance boosts and I will update the information here.

Section 1: Maximizing Your Potential
Stop all of your Antivirus Software or configure an exception for launcher.exe
Make sure you are malware free by using a program like MalwareBytes
Stop all unnecessary background programs like your browser, media player, flux, etc.
Test the competency of your system by testing with 3DMark Vantage

Section 2: Understand and Maximize the Capabilities of Your Hardware
Note that the sim is highly dependent on your video card. Simmers with with modern 1GB+ VRAM and PCU 3GHz+ are getting the best results. (Both benchmarks are now considered low end!)
Check the status of dust in your box! When is the last time you checked?!
Monitor temperatures of your GPU with a program like GPU-z if you experience freezing
Update and Test the latest Video Card Drivers
An SSD drive can boost performance.

Section 3: The Video Options Screen Settings

http://i714.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/5622e9ab.jpg

Resolution-Check that you match your native screen resolution and refresh rate.
Full Screen-
Detail Level-
Model Detail-
Buildings Detail- Recommend Low setting and wait for future advances unless your doing some ground filming
Land Detail-
Texture Quality- Players have reported a performance boost after setting Texture quality to HIGH from Original. Huge on performance, but also the sexiest setting. To go Original (which is also the highest setting), you should have a 1.5GB VRAM video card. High I would recommend a 1GB+ VRAM video card.
Forest-has a huge effect on performance. Medium seems to be the sweet spot for 1GB+ Video cards
Buildings Amount-seems to effect the rendering of buildings at a distance. In my experience, setting this lower will cause buildings to look like legos until they render. I set it to Unlimited and they render great now. This is my experience only
Land Shading-on the ground/trees is not perfect as of yet. For best results, set your fly-times to morning or late afternoon, not high noon. Doesn't seem to do much for tweaking
Anit-Epilepsy Filter- Disable (at your own risk)
Anti-Aliasing- works best at 2xAA for most everyone. Higher setting do not affect rendering, but may inhibit your performance. Also consider FXAA with this setting disabled
SSAO- Disable and wait for future improvements
VSYNC-Check to sync your frames with monitor's refresh rate. A personal preference based on your hardware.
Damage Decals-
Grass-- Can be big on performance +/- 5FPS, but looks awesome
Shadows-This is the awesome cockpit shadows. Can be big on performance +/- 5FPS, but looks incredible
Roads-Can be disabled if you have a low end rig and want to see what it looks like without roads vs. your improved performance

Section 4: Other Options for Performance Boost
FXAA :There is a new AntiAliasing method out by Nividia called FXAA and it works with IL2 CloD using Nvidia Beta drivers 301.24:
Nvidia Beta drivers 301.24, FXAA works in CloD

If you want to try another method, place these 3 Dx10 files into your root or main folder with the launcher.exe in it
Also, you can consider disabling AA in game if you use FXAA.
Here are the files :
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=25281[/quote]
4/12: This information is outdated, but will still work if you do some digging for files. If you did use this method, don't forget to remove the files
dxgi, fxaa3_10.h and shader10.fx

Section 5: More information to consider
ATI owners: Disable the Ubisoft intro video by renaming it to anything.
*Get rid of the opening ubisoft splash screen for faster load times and potential issues with crossfire/sli
In your Steam folder, go to "SteamApps\common\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover\parts\core\GUI". Rename "Logo.wmv" to any random name and it wont appear anymore
*Disabling your rear-view mirror can dramatically help frame rates on takeoffs and landings. Since the mirror has not reached its full potential, I disable mine with good results. (instant +10FPS!)
*Reinstalling The Game after the latest patch has proven to be a performance booster.
*SLI can actually be an improvement for some, a detriment for others. However, the sim is not officially supported yet.

Section 6: Benchmarking
When benchmarking, I would highly recommend testing your FPS and performance in cockpit and not on the black death track. After all, you're going to be in cockpit, not running a track when you are flying.

For an on screen FPS monitor while testing, open the console and type:
Quote:

fps START SHOW
Note: If you use benchmarking software to test, you will most likely lose FPS with that software running. (i.e. FRAPS 3.4.7 or MSI Afterburner)

This is a work in progress guide. I'm starting out with some quick notes, but I'll organize, add links and screenshots with your help and feedback. Please use this as a suggestion and feedback forum to help improve our performance. Feel free to add or correct so I can update the bullet points and we can help each other maximize performance.

Re: Studders
From JTDawg at ATAG

Hey Guys, Got 2 things worked like a charm, no stutters , no slide show for ati an nvidia users .

Win7 USERS

.1 click START ^ Control panel ^ Programs ^ Programs an Features Go to Microsoft. NET Framework 4 Client Profile. double click on it , An repair it , After repair it will ask restart your computer, do it

.2 Then go to C PROGRAM FILES X86/ Steamapps/common/il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover/redist/DirectX/ Scroll down til you see DXSETUP Double click on it , an run it!!

kestrel79 01-11-2012 06:37 PM

Just wanted to say I just switched over to these settings. They made a big difference. I have much less stutters when flying over land now. Less building pop up as well too.

The one thing that kills it for me though is the terrain and building shimmering. I can't stand this. Once they get some AA working in this game it will be KILLER. I'm not too big into using the 3rd party AA but from what I have seen that helps but I'll wait for the real thing.

Switching from High to Medium makes big difference for my ATI HD4890, setting at Low gives too poor image quality to my taste.

kestrel79 01-16-2012 02:38 PM

Yeah I can't believe how much better my system runs CloD now after these tweaks. Before I was using all high and med settings, but it looks like I had a few things on high that should of been on med. And building amount set to unlimited sounds like it would be bad but in fact it actually helps.

I also did the splash screen trick and I'm sure helped as well.

I get very smooth fps when flying even over land at altitude, when flying low on the coast it drops a bit but most of the stutters are gone so it feels much better. Flying through London low is still a chore but at least it's more smooth.

Time of day makes a huge difference. I still just enjoy flying around casually in this sim, learning CEM and sight seeing. When flying at dawn or dusk the shimmer seems to be reduced and the light is very nice.

Freeze/Crash/Launcher error?

Question.....You did not say it but are you saying you are not experiencing freezes/crashes?

If you do experience freezes/crashes...How long can you run before it happens?

Covert_Death 01-21-2012 08:47 PM

the FXAA link no longer provides a valid file unfortunately...

is SLI still coming to this game??? one GTX460 is not enough to handle this game with the visual affects on medium, and without it it looks poor, as do all the other settings

my GTX460 works pretty good..
IMHO
not sure why you have probs with it,,

I am not sure if my computer profile is on this forum but it's no super computer, and I have everything on medium, except I think the shows are turned down..
3 ghz core2duo cpu, MSI Nvidia P7n motherboard , 4gb ddr2 ram, Win7, PNY GTX460 video with 1 gb ddr5 ram and 256 bit ., 500 gb hard drive space..

I have cable Internet RoadRunner isp..

I run Black Shark, IL-2, IL-2 COD, A-10C, Stalker,,
Saitek X52 Pro and pedals..
==

note: the sound is not even, I don't hear the aircraft engine at idle, but so far that's my problem I am trying to adjust.. I have to give it throttle to hear the engine... once that is fixed, it's pretty good, then the ghos tplanes need to be fixed.. no more ghosts..
IMHO

billeinstein 02-19-2012 05:38 AM

And, I found that enganging the AutoPilot will boost the FPS on my PC about 15 or more...

Ribbs67 02-19-2012 06:39 AM

A few quick things... For NVIDIA users, that update their drivers. When you stall your drivers, the first thing you need to do is go into the control panel and set them to single display mode. They default at multi gpu setting . Like were all running sli or crossfire setups. This will give a decent performance increase.
I also found the shimmering bad.. I went in the config file in the 1C documents folder.I set Drawifnotfocused=0 to 1. I didn't see a hit in frames, and it seemed to reduce the shimmering quite a bit. I also don't notice the constant draw in circle that is around the aircraft. Possibly helped with studdering.
I'm not saying this is the HolyGrail of tweak.. but it seemed to work well for me.. give it a shot and report your results..

Oh.. and Im also running the Gtx 460.. but its the 2gig version running at 800 Hz.. ;)

latware 02-24-2012 03:28 PM

Hi everybody

the FXAA pack is still here

http://www.mediafire.com/?9by0ddpvv62uzd1

It can boost AA even on my old nVidia8800 512MB :)

Ok this is probably going to be a dumb question but here goes:
When I install my Nvidia drivers, yes multi diplay mode is selected - now I run two monitors, on my single GTX 460 video card. I always assumed this mode was selected automatically, since I have two active monitors attached?

Are you saying that option is related to runing two or more video cards, rather than the number of monitors?

How does one disable the splash screen? I have just installed this sim, have gone into the video options and adjusted them per this thread's recommended settings.
Also I am not seeing an intro video? I think I have seen this mentioned somewhere here, should there be one?

Thanks,

I HAVE BEEN VERY FRUSTRATED BY THE SLOW DOWN AND STUTTERING in CoD..thanks to this thread things are much better. I DL Game Booster and it seems to work. I adjusted my video options and was able to increase them. I now turn off Trend virus and other programs staying offline. I am unable to turn off Windows media and will keep trying to find the panel that offers on-off choices Win 7 64. I have been taking these behind the scenes programs for granted until the frame rate problem was pointed it. Many Thanks

you might want to go to RUN in the start menu, and then type in services.msc
be careful about what you disable, you might want to go to a website called black viper http://www.blackviper.com/AskBV/askBV.htm (this isnt the exact link to the page you want but the website has all the services listed and then describes what they do and if you need them enabled, im sure you will find the correct page on the blackviper website)

also for start up programs, same thing go to run in start menu type in MSCONFIG

find the tab at the top that says startup...these are your programs that start up automatically when your comptuer starts,

both of these menus will allow you to either disable or enable background services....

WARNING: PLEASE PLEASE be careful, disabling programs can have negative effects on your computer....be certain it is safe to disable the program in question...

ALSO if anyone can help me i need to know the folder where the cache is at...i forgot...thanks!!!

Finally after five plus days of tweaking, reinstalling Clod. My tri- fire set up will do max settings, 4x, SSAO enabled with vsync. Im getting steady, smooth, almost hicup free gaming. I'm using Radeon Pro with AFR friendly crossfire rendering. I used to not be able to enable that one because it would flicker bad.
Huh? Must of hit the right combo sets I guess.

I still get horrible smoke flickering during the black death track. I have tried changing the LOD, makes no difference. I did the config ini tweaks, no difference.

I did change to realistic gunnery so there is less smoke produce.
It feels like I'm pounding them with 10,000 rounds. I will get multiple direct engine hits at close range and they still fly on looking like swiss cheese.

Flanker35M 07-23-2012 11:23 PM

S!

Broken Pixel, by the looks of your pics I get similar FPS with my single 7970HD. Maybe you should try to see what VSync Off does? SSAO seems to have less negative effect with latest betas than in last official patch.

broken pixel 07-24-2012 12:34 AM

I switched drivers and I'm using 12.4s and I don't get the flickering with ARF off.
When I don't use vsync the prop tears alot when I'm in the cockpit view.
The problem is the massive FPS drop, my min. FPS are fine with the 12.4s.
No matter the driver there is always a huge drop in frames. :(
I sold my 6990 with with waterblock on eBay last night for 550.00.
Yay! I am going to the green side again choosing a GTX 680 Classified. :•)

Flanker35M 07-24-2012 07:17 AM

S!

Congrats on a good deal :-) Still staying with AMD myself, very few if any problems with it. Did consider 680GTX, but in games I play both brands seem to be pretty equal in performance. Anyway please post your results when getting the new card :-)

broken pixel 07-24-2012 09:36 AM

Thanks, my current set up plays BF3 Ultra settings smooth as butter everything maxed out. I'm a bit tired of BF3 and want to get back into flying combat sims as my current setup does not play well with them. It's probably because I'm running 3 GPUs? Plus I want some new hardware to overclock. I got the beta DCS P51 & only get 35 FPS, granted its beta. But I figure a single card for the time being will be easier to manage. I'm also thinking of getting the Asus Rampage extreme IV & i7- 3930k for future proofing. If I end up selling most of my main hardware it's not going to cost much to get new hardware to play with :)

Querer 07-24-2012 02:23 PM

Why not. If you sell your three GPU's and the rest of the system, you could probably go for a GTX680 4GB Variant. I am sure, that you most probably run into less difficulties and maybe, they get the SLI support fixed. Then you could still get another GTX680 4GB card, as soon as there is proper SLI support. All depends on your screen resolution. If its too big, you maybe should think about going directly for a SLI GTX680 4GB setup...

I cannot use the latest 301.42 Nvidia driver because it is halfed my FPS. The game is running on 25-35 fps on the ground and 50-60 fps at 3000m altitude on max settings with the previous 296.10 driver but I've got only 13-15 fps on the ground with the 301.42 . Have anybody problem with the 301.42 Nvidia driver ? As I know the 301.42 version include the new FXAA method. Is it working in the game now?

Yes driver injected FXAA works, as do other types. I'm using latest Beta 304.79, which seem fine but I've not compared.

I can't remember them causing a problem with my system and Cliffs so I can't offer any information.

I would do a clean driver install first if I was determined to use the WHQL driver but my personal experience is that these Beta drivers are typically good and just a quick research will weed out those causing widespread problems.

I need some help. Desperately. Like many others, I have struggled to find an acceptable way to run this sim. I have tried, everything, that I "think" that I know. I would be most appreciative and hopefully enlightened, if some kind soul is capable of interpreting the results of the 3D Mark Advantage tests that I have just made. Are the tests acceptable for my CPU and Graphics Card? Anything else, that I need to be aware of?

Thank You

Report back with your results, also run the Black Death Track and post your min. avg. max fps.

Start black death track and when it loads cntrl f12 or whatever you have the console keys bind to? Then type FPS START SHOW, press enter and cntrl f12 or whatever your keys are to start the console.

Have now downloaded and run latest version of 3DMark.
On to the Black Death track....following your instructions to the letter.

I'm willing to TS3 in case I'm too dull witted to understand a written instruction. Thanx again.

Nice test... on the fps type just like you see this, note that some need to be caps, and press enter:)
fps START SHOW

Pudfark 08-11-2012 08:06 PM

Ok, I'll give it a whirl again...:)

Pudfark 08-11-2012 08:17 PM

Thanx SlipBall, I must of been a dab frustrated before...that fixed it.

Ok, here are my results:

AVG = 33

MAX = 75

MIN = 5

I appreciate the help guys....

Pudfark 08-11-2012 08:21 PM

My bad yet again.....had vsync on and aa off.

broken pixel 08-11-2012 08:25 PM

I think under general settings look for console assign key or keys.

fps START SHOW
fps STOP SHOW

I just did testings ill post them in a few. There is a memory leak STILL 1C. The fps drop is a major problem that has been a problem since day one and I'm sure will never be fixed, caused by the explosions.

Pudfark 08-11-2012 08:34 PM

Ok...I did figure out that part on the console.
Any thoughts on video configuration...pretty much have everything on
low and medium. I have read a few threads that posters have stated,
a few things should be set to high? Maybe, probably, I'm wrong, but...
I just think/believe that I should be able to swing "higher" settings?

Do my results reflect the capabilities of my "system"?
Should I consider? Higher instead of Lower settings?

I really don't think I can build a much better computer than I already have. The game engine is jacked and whom ever coded the engine needs to revisit the Dev school again. What happend to the damn optimizers and testers? A public Alpha would of saved this game, I mean one that was released before the retail copies hit the market.

RIP IL2 COD Best of luck on the Russian Front with the same game engine.

Did you see my results with my system specs? I does not matter how strong your hardware is there game engine is not optimized. Maybe all settings low and a few medium if you don't want the horrid fps drop when explosions go off, etc...

You just have to test out different settings.

Pudfark 08-11-2012 09:01 PM

Roger that Broken Pixel......Thank You for your efforts.
I did note that you have a better Vcard.....

Like some others....and sixteen months later....I'm about to
park this sim. It's really been a disappointing experience.

Thanx Everybody

Pudfark 08-12-2012 01:03 AM

I uninstalled the latest beta patch and reverted back to the official steam version and then ran some tests. "Black Death Track"

I set everything as high as it would go and 2xaa, no epi filter and no ssao.
I got:

AVG = 26 MAX = 70 MIN = 5

I then repeated the same test, except no grass selected.
I got:

AVG = 21 MAX = 72 MIN = 0
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This just makes no sense to me. I would have thought that the "no grass"
results would have bettered the first results. Fork me, I'm done.

It's time for me to step away for awhile.... Thanx Everybody and Good Luck

broken pixel 08-12-2012 02:31 AM

Tha min 0 is because you have fps START SHOW twice or it will say zero. Give her another go. Well at least we can spend quality time analyzing there engine with different hardware configs.

Katdog any chance of an update to your settings now that the official patch is out?

Your settings made this game playable for me almost a year ago, I'd like to see if I can crank up more details now with the patch.

Yes. I've been looking into it. Any feedback appreciated here.

Latest Patch

I was unable to run this game 6 months ago. I was getting 3-4 fps. Now after the latest patch I can FINALLY play the game with good FPS. I cant believe a patch made this much of a difference.

My CPU specs are:

AMD dual core 4400+
Ati HD 5570 1GB Memory
4 GB ram
Windows 7 64 bit

Obviously this is a low-mid Comp. and IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover runs fine. Thank God!!!!!

clear009 12-07-2012 04:38 AM

Latest Patch Again

At really high graphic settings it runs ok in cockpit view... On external I turn them down a bit ( but still looks great). I was hesitant on buying it since it ran like crap about a year ago on the lowest settings but I said what the hell since I heard good things about the latest patch.. Thank god I did.. I Couldn't be happier with the performance. I'm getting about 35 FPS on Medium-High settings now!!!!

ptwparkinson 02-01-2013 08:17 AM

after 10 or 15 minutes the game freezes

After playing il2 storm of war for say 10 or 15 minute the game freezes

could this be down to insufficient memory or do I just need to bite the bullet and upgrade to a new pc ( if it`s just a matter of adding some memory to keep me going for now it will give me more time to save for an upgrade )

I copied and pasted my pc specs from belaric as follows --- gaphics card is the nvidia 275 ( bit confusing below )

Sli is supported , but you have to instal the support code yourself and for those running Sli there is a benefit.

I have a thread in the technical area with instructions on how to instal the code supplied by Luthier (it looks like official support will never come as development was shut down before any link with Nvidia was established). Crossfire has never as far as I know been supported.

Power management tweak win8 - finally no stutters

After weeks of tweaking and using all the information I could find on this forum and the internet I finally found the one to finish my performance tweaks.
Find the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Icon in START. Open it up and go to the Performance tab and set Link Power Management to disable. You must restart your machine for it to take effect.
I had tried all other performance/stuttering tweaks with minimal results, and after doing this my stutters are finally gone.
Thanks to this community who has posted all their fixes.
Here is the Best tweaking guide ever for COD. Even if not overclocking (I'm not), the settings in this guide let me fly stutter free on the highest in game settings! Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

I have turned antialiasing completely off using SMAA and even using performance setting in NVCP. It looks beautiful and runs smooth as glass.
