Wings of Prey?
Wondering whether to buy it.. Whats it like compared to CLOD? As long as theres more planes and a custom battle settup I'll try it:cool:
|
Is it better than CloD?
The answer depends on what you want or expect but for me CloD is better. There are more ac and it runs very well performance wise. It's good fun, terrain graphics good and FM not too bad (though I haven't fired it up in a long time). MP is instant air start action but the player is the server and it is difficult to join many of the MP sesssions (a lot of which are arcade difficulty level). Custom battles in SP are limited to selecting the difficulty level, a map, weather, Time and a particular ac to fly against - e.g, Select an LA7 to fly agaianst X number of BF109 -F as the opponent. |
Just noticed theres a 'spiritual successor' due to be released within the next couple of months, some interesting screens.

The campaign is fun and jumps around many theaters (so there are quite a few planes available) but is a bit arcade-ish (sometimes the objectives appear to have been designed for unlimited ammo rather than realistic ammo settings). There are people playing online, many playing arcade mode (ugg) and I have always been able to find or make a game online for simulator mode (of course more people play arcade mode [easier FM] cause it's easier). Engine management is easier ;) Maps are smaller (but I think they look awesome) but seem 'big enough' for dogfights. I got my copy on sale and don't regret it, YMMV. :D |
Hi Tav,
I bought it when it was released and to be honest, i played it 4-5 times! Even withe more detailed level-adjustments it`s way to much arcade! If you`re experienced in the other Il-2 titles i would say-hands off! It looks nice but the gameplay is too easy! |
It's just a console game ported to the pc.

Graphically WOP is impressive. But the problem is flight model is based on the first IL2 and campaigns are designed based on arcade settings. I have seen myself failing a mission because "It took too long".
It has a simulation component not as deep as CLOD or IL2 1946 but it's there and you can enjoy it if you don't compare it with CLOD or IL1946. If you are looking for a new sim try the free version of Rise of Flight. It includes 2 planes (not sure) + multiplayer + quick missions + campaign and once you buy new planes you get the full game which is basically demo + new planes  http://riseofflight.com/en And the store to buy new planes http://riseofflight.com/en/store |
Well it is kind of arcade-ich, but if You're ww2 aircrafts enthusiast I would suggest You to get it, since I know it's cheap now... Beautiful graphics and playability on low end machines is big advantage. Unfortunate there is not much of simulation in there.

You would be suprised how many console players went out and bought a PC and IL1946 because they wanted more SIM properties than a console can support. |

started with birds of prey on xbox as well with SEE and others.(it was fun) without this console sim, i wouldnt even be aware of the existence of il2 1946 and clod. this game got me into flight sims.so its not everything bad about console games. |
It's definitely worth a play, it's not IL2 and it's not CoD but it looks great, performs well and the Flight models and damage models are adaptations of the IL2 engine. Campaign is quite immersive though it would have been better with proper accents for commentary. It's great for a quick custom dogfight too, AI isn't unreal but it's still fun. Not quite simulation but much more than an arcade sim compared to other efforts. I actually prefer it to RoF but that's probably just my bias to the plane set and period.

About Wings of Prey, I think it first depends very much on what experience you're after, and second what you make it. It has beautiful smooth graphics, very decent flight models (originally licensed from IL2 but since then much improved), and a much improved MP (stability) since the latest update. Engine and systems management is very light, the flying experience can be very good nevertheless if you do not rely on the game's rather limited MP modes (e.g. respawn points are too close). If you decide to get it, perhaps you'd like to check out our Club which flies the game at it's highest difficulty and with special setups: http://forum.gaijinent.com/index.php...the-aces-club/ Below an original recording of a Club game 1 vs 1 in these settings from pilot's perspective. From my experience there was nothing to play in the game apart for the quick mission offline.
MP was a burden or a plea to play with strange individuals gaming the play with strange FM, UFO moves or simply ground scratching flight. As an admin it was not even possible to ban them as an hosting server. But moreover the fact that we had to pay for the patch that could cure all the basics bugs the game have encountered was simply a shame (pls remind that the game was sold at 60$ with map the size of a napkin). It's also the first time that I see a simulator where your plane is repositioned on a reciprocical heading each time your stepping out of your fishbowl . WoP has certainly the best terrains graphics... but tht's all. Add the fact that their devs give earing to all the SPit whiner that kept complaining after the good SPit FM the game had on its release (much like the one of Janes WWII) and you 'd get a good picture of where this game is going : it's AAA and alikes happy world... |
S!
I bought it along with Wings Of Luftwaffe. Only map I disliked was England due the green tint. But if looking past it the terrain was OK. In some places could be seen that they had used modern terrain data as some British airfields had a modern layout with modern plane bunkers ;) But if getting past that, the game was quite fun for a change. For me I liked the Mustang most, even I am not a great fan of Allied Iron..It just looks nice in this game and you could actually fly it so that temps were tihin operating range...and it took a while to cool the engine down after a fight + you could overheat and damage it if pushing too hard..just noticed power was mising and gradually it gave in.. But what struck most that is WAY ahead of CoD: solid no stuttring FPS everywhere, the LOD changes and dot changing to a plane, visibility against ground etc. The planes did not turn to clunky low res LOD blobs at any phase, a Bf109 looked like one up close out to medium/far ranges. No missing / flickering wings etc. Also the contrast, or how it should be said, made the planes a bit better visible against ground as you could spot them from the glint of canopy/wings etc. Anyways..WoP is it's own genre and not comparing it any deeper to CoD which is in a league of it's own. Just another WW2 era flying game to my collection :) |
It's an arcade game in every sense of the meaning.
Here is great representation of the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crBpvqod9qo |

Whatever peoples opinions regards WOP that video has to be the worst example with the fixed cockpit view and does not do it any justice. Visually it's far better than that. Anyone thinking about this title should check later vids with headtracking and POV zoom enabled.
I am curious about the numerous updates since I last fired it up (some are over 4Gb!) so in the process of updating my copy to see all the changes. |

As stated above it can't be compared with CLOD but it is not an arcade despite that with lower realism settings it can be played as an arcade. |
It's easy..
CloD is a simulator first a video game second. WoP is a video game first a simulator second. WoP also serves as a gateway to CloD, so it's all good. |

Hey I own WoP myself. If it’s a flight sim I usually buy it anyway just to support it.
Yes you can use TrackIR. Yes you don't have to have the music playing. Perhaps that is a bad choice of video. I have no complaints about WoP. Everyone has their likes/dislikes. I would encourage you to buy it you'll love it. |
The dark fade-out shading in the cockpit and on the edge of the framing drives me nuts.
|
Tavignon,
It puzzles me where you found those nice screenshots. Checked on the link you posted but couldn't find them. Anyway, I like them, thanks for posting! |
I think the latest pics were from Birds of Steel which would appear to be a console only version of World of Planes. (I could be wrong) Many of the same aircraft are coming out in both versions with birds of steel slated for release before the end of march.(no exact date yet) Im trying to get on the beta tester list for World of Planes before they close it off.
|
I updated my copy of WOP (huge files - took a long while ) and fired it up. Whatever the glitches with CLoD, it has set a benchmark regards the visual detail and game play that is vastly superior. What struck me was just how dated WOP looks and feels like in comparison.
Full marks to Gaigin for their continual improvement and I wish them all the best with their future titles but, of the WW2 Sims currently available there is only one at present! CloD has a set a benchmark that any future competiting title will have to try and match to be a success. |
Finally finished download today on steam.. had a blast on MP, I cant wait till clod runs that smooth:)
|
I purchased a D-box and so far I love it! It works great for Driving and flying games. But there is no support for Wings of Prey or CoD which I desperately want. I asked D-box and they said that this has to come from the developer.
Is there any chance of 1C adding D-box code? Who should we petition? |
Quote:
In germany a d-box is a sat-receiver, not really usable for games. :D Be it as it may, NO sim should be dumbed down to be console playable, imo! |
http://www.d-box.com/gaming/files/cd...more_image.jpg
I assume this is what he wants to be compatable with CloD, I imagine the motion actuators need some custom in-game support. |
I don't have that particular D-box seat but I do have a D-box motion platform. I can't tell you how awesome it is and how it adds to the racing games like rFactor and iRacing. It also works with flight games. No console dumbing down, just pure awesomeness. ;)
Can we petition 1C to add support for D-box to these titles? Do 1C admins visit these forums? |

How much? |
I got mine used for $1500. I know sounds like a lot but I can't really explain what this adds to a game. You have to feel it. It puts you in the game more than ever. Its wonderful.
|
In europe this:
http://www.motion-sim.cz/ could be interesting also then. As i asked them they said if there is a order they would work it out to work with IL2-Cliffs of Dover. They also said a family father with normal income could afford it, whatever that means. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k2mE...layer_embedded |
Interesting. Wonder if it would work for flight sims.
|
Yes it would work for flight sims, but D-box is way more affordable than that. That sim costs $24,000 in the USA. Also it only supports 4 games!
D-box supports over 40. I was hoping we could petition 1C for D-box support. |
Nobody wants to help me petition D-Box? :(
|
I bet everybody that has D-box would
|
Its OK if you don't :)
I'll take all the help I can get to make more games compatible. I want cliffs of dover and wings of prey bad. |
I don't think people are going to want to heap the devs with more stuff to add before they have fixed the game, and it seems too much of a niche.....maybe in the future.
|
:(
Thats the thing, are they even working on this title any more? At least this is something. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Do the devs even read these forums? Should I be in another thread? |

Hi all,
Those of you who have Wings of Prey but don't like the random dogfights that are typical over there are invited to check out the Aces Club. It's basically a set of flying/playing rules which allow for much more interesting flights. Here's the link: http://forum.gaijinent.com/index.php...the-aces-club/ :) Kero aka MAC |
