Strange video settings problem
I had a malware attack this past weekend, and in the course of getting rid of it, somehow my video settings in IL-2 got changed. No big deal. However, I've run into a problem setting them back.
I got into the game to drop the landscape detail from Perfect to Excellent. I hit "apply" then back out. I then go into the Config.ini and make a couple adjustments there (Forest=0, and a couple more) I hit Save, close it, then go into the game. I check the video settings... back to Perfect! I switch to Excellent and back out, check the Config.ini and the settings are back to orginal! I changed the Config.ini to read only, which saves the settings. But the game still reverts back to Perfect when I open it up. Anyone have any idea what is causing this? |
My most simple idea: Go to the ingame graphics-options and set them all to low, then back to perfect. That way you practically reset the other options related to the settings.
If that doesn't help, it would be best to post the OpenGL-Part of your conf.ini or you can send me a PM with your email, so I can send your my conf.ini-file and you can compare both. |
What Operating system are you running?
Did you try il2setup.exe? Also, you need to exit the game and then you can edit conf.ini Only one program can change conf.ini at one time. notepad OR the game OR il2setup If you edit conf.ini with notepad use SAVE and do not use SAVE AS. - the last will try to add a .txt extension and that is very easy to miss. After you saved conf.ini close notepad then start it up again and check your changes are still there. Under XP/Vista you might need to take ownership of conf.ini - search help for ownership. |
Crash,
I have a very low-end system, and have been using Forest=0 for ages, and have always had the menu showing "perfect". Trust me, it's NOT perfect or my P3 1.2 ghz and nVidia 6200 would grind to a halt. It's just some weird menu glitch. Don't mess with the menu after changing the conf.ini, or forest resets to 1. Cloyd |

Under the tab 3D: Reduce Catalyst AI to Standard. Set V-sync to On, unless....., Disable Temporal AA. Note that you should be using the Catalyst 7.11 drivers for the x1950 - any later ones will slow down performance. You can try the later ones if you are using Vista - but 7.11 is definitely the end of the line as far as XP is concerned. I suggest using them as your bench for Fraps tests. High quality AF may help, you'll need to experiment with that. A high AF number may slow things down also. This is my conf for the Open GL section - you need to be using OGL to use Perfect settings. [Render_OpenGL] TexQual=3 TexMipFilter=2 TexCompress=0 TexFlags.UseDither=0 TexFlags.UseAlpha=0 TexFlags.UseIndex=0 TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0 TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0 TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=1 TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1 TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0 TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1 TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1 TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1 TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1 TexFlags.ClipHintExt=1 TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=1 TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=0 TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1 TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=0 TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1 TexFlags.DepthClampNV=0 TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1 TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=0 HardwareShaders=1 Shadows=2 Specular=2 SpecularLight=2 DiffuseLight=2 DynamicalLights=1 MeshDetail=2 VisibilityDistance=3 Sky=2 Forest=2 LandShading=2 LandDetails=2 LandGeom=3 TexLarge=1 TexLandQual=2 TexLandLarge=1 VideoSetupId=17 Water=1 Effects=1 ForceShaders1x=0 PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.0625 PolygonOffsetUnits=-1.0 TypeClouds=1 Note that those are my settings for on-line playing. You might want to set Water=2 if you're off-line, note that it slows things down quite a bit. Hope this helps B |
First, tx for your quick answer and hlp sir. I would ask to one more thing pls; Whats the difference about my conf.ini settings pls?

I'm not really familiar with the ATI-settings, but maybe you could tune down your anti-aliasing? The picture may look more crispy, but that will also increase the chance that you will see dots, that get simply blured away with higher settings.
I use similar settings on my PC, just with the 8800GTS and I am not getting as good results as you do, as I just noticed.... :-x Well, anyway: The higher the AA-value, the more samples are rendered and calculated to smooth out single points. If you see the plane as a dot, that means that 16 samples shade the black dot minimally down to the surrounding color. What is great for the general looks, can be really bad if you WANT to see those single dots. On another note, you should try to disable the S3TC-Compression in your IL2-INI. I am pretty sure you graphics-card can handle uncompressed textures and it will increase the overall looks with little loss in FPS. (On the other hand, if you don't have "Texture Compression ABR Extension" enabled, I don't know it S3TC will work anyway) |
you may want to just have the il2 setup on with flat shadows that helps me spot the object better lighting flat and object lighting flat try that also the higher the AA and ANTI
the better the fps for Open gl you will get. Thats from my experience. |
Tried low anti aliasing, flat ground and object lightnings, lower shadow setting (shadows=0), disabled the S3TC-Compression settings but those planes still disappearing... What i am missing?

Yes, but do note that the x1950 Pro support stops at Catalyst 7.11. Beyond that date the frame rates are cut by almost half.

Thank you gentlemen, i have very good system (AMD X2 5.6 Dual - 3 x 1 Gig DDR 2 RAM - Asus AMD Chipset Mainboard - Ati Radeon Saphire X1950 Pro 512 Mb PCI2 Video Card) but seems not enough for IL-2 or i am doing somethings wrong here. Please post here if you guys find a way to get better visibility for my system. S!

I think brando is right.
I don't know much about ATI-settings and the CCC, but if you look at your screenshots, it says: "Graphicsadapters: 1. HD 3600 Series..." Yet you have a X1950. You got the wrong drivers installed. Remove them, use DriverCleanerPro (Freeware) to remove the settings and install Catalyst 7.1 drivers and test it again. |

The 1650 series have a different architecture to the 1950s, in some way unaffected by the cut-off. The 1950 is a one-off in this respect and can't be over-clocked either btw. |
