Launcher.exe crashes when playing online Channel map
Hi, after some months and several patches I have tried to play again on line Channel Online map, but I have still the same problem: just seconds after spawning, Launcher.exe crashes, CTD.
I have played this map offline, carrying out the RAF Pilot Campaign without problems, but online, I can't. Everytime CTD I can play other online maps like Islands, with no problems at all. But I can't fly Channel map. Has anyone suffered this problem? Which can be the solution. I am really fed up. Here are my Specs: Intel CoreDuo E6550 Conroe 2.33 GHz Motherboard Gigabyte P35-DS3L chipset LGA775 4 GB RAM DDR2 1066 MHZ Videocard EVGA Nvidia GTX580 1.5 GB VRAM DDR5 Drivers 280.21 DirectX 11 Soundcard Audigy 2 ZS Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits SP1 Monitor HP 2510i 25" Track IR 4+Clip (drivers version 5) Joystick Saitek X52 Pedals CH ADSL 3Mb/s down - 320 Kb/s up Nvidia Control Panel Settings --------------------------- Antialiasing – 2xAA Antialiasing Transparency - 8x Supersampling Anisotropic Filter - x2 Texture Filter - Quality Max.number frames prerendered - 0 Vsync On Triple Buffer On In Game Settings ----------------- Anti aliasing 2xAA Game settings [SSAO] On Game settings [VSYNC] On Game settings [Model detail] Med Game settings [Building detail] Med Game settings [Land detail] Med Game settings [Forest] Med Game settings [Visual effects] Med Game settings [Texture quality] Med Game settings [Damage decals] Med Game settings [Buildings amount] Med Game settings [Land shading] Med Game settings [Grass] Off Game settings [Shadows] Off Game settings [Roads] ON Game settings [Anti epilepsy] Off Some Conf.ini settings ----------------------- DepthBits =24 StencilBits=8 Render=D3D10_0 I have updated my files in Steam(it came back to 1.4821 status) and then erased the Cache folder and install patch 1.5886 + small hotfix patch Help Please !!! |
Did you install the hotfix as well (assuming you're running beta 2)?
It's a small DLL file that you have to download in the bottom of Luthier's sticky for beta 2 patch. Without it you'll have constant crashing |
Yes, I did, (sorry I didn't mention it. Now edited. )
I had this problem from May, and it is persistamt |
Hmm,
The only other thing I can suggest is to verify the integrity of the game and reinstall the beta 2 patch and reinstall the hotfix and retry. (which im sure you've already done :( ) |

I thought the problem could come from RAM but I have 4 GB, and from Windows task manager I can see that Launcher is using alone 1,3 GB RAM and the rest of processes only about 0.7 more so my RAM should be big enough. And offline i can play perfectly games with +30 planes in the air. I do not understand what's happening. I appreciate your interest, mate, thank you very much. |

just a few quick suggestions for you to try mate.
Change you fullscreen mode to psudo. In your nvidia control panel, The 1st item in the top left column called "Adjust image setting with preview", change it to "let the application decide" instead of the "Use the advanced 3D image settings". Create a shortcut from the launcher.exe in the c:/programs files/steam/steam apps/common/il2 cliffs of dover folder. Use this shortcut tol run the game. Use hyperlobby to enter the atag server. Open you conf.ini file in the 1csoft folder located in your mydocuments folder. Change the Depthbits and stencilbits numbers from 24 and 8, to 32 and 16 respectively. Also look to the net part, and change your speed to 250000. *EDIT* I just got home so ive checked out what ive done to get it runnin as good as possible with less crashes online. These things have really helped me alot. |
Thanks mate, I will give them a try as soon as I come back home. Cheers!

A squadmate is experiencing the a similar issue (XP and 3GB Ram), can play all maps fine, but channel map kicks him out really fast. He tried all by now, but simply cannot fly over the straits.
A realistic advice: Get a new system, if you want to play the full scale of CoD, or stay off the the big maps. Hurts, but better than wasting endless hours, tinkering around. In my experience, CoD used more or less 4GB RAM, running the game a dedicated on the same machine it for several hours, while testing, my RAM usage rises to 6GB. Even though I have 8GB Ram I expect the CTD launcher.exe crash the moment my RAM gets clocked up to a little bit more than 4 GB (1-2GB Win7 + 1-2GB CoD - even though I still have 4GB free). |

Hola Cazador,
I usually fly with my cousin and he is suffering the same issue. Win 7 32 bits. He cant fly in Channel Map. If you find the solution please inform us. It´s very annoying cause Channel Map in full realism is amazing. Un saludo, "Xe" |
Thank you all for you advices. I have made a closer follow up of RAM usage using the Task Manager and have seen that at the point of the CTD my total RAM usage is just about 70% of the 4 GB, so 2,8 GB.
This value is made of: 1,3 GB for Launcher.exe usage + 0.7 GB of other visible Win7 applications and services (quite few as I run CloD on a dedicated partition of my HD with a clean Win7 install) + 0.8 GB of hidden Win7 services (not noted so far). I do not know who is resposible, if Win7 or ClOD but it seems RAM management is very poor in this Sim. And I can not understand why this difference flying off or on line. Online connection should not overload memory usage at the point of shut down the program. At least I see I am not alone with this issue. I am afraid I will have to start saving some money to renew my CPU/MB/RAM as I did with the GPU, thinking the heaviest load would fall on the graphics side. I have flown IL2 from its very beginning with smaller PCs and never found such problem with memory handling. |
Hola Cazador,
I had the same problems as you, I tried many things but finally scope ram as the cause of them, did multiple tests and I found launcher crashed when ram limit was approached or close to the 3gb for 32bits. I changed W7 to 64 bits version and the experience is quite differente now, I had the same RAM as before (4gb in dual channel) but now I can play online and off-line (some off-line missions use a lot of RAM too) without the continous launcher.exe curse on the screen. Maybe next patch will solve it but if you are not patient as me I think better move to 64 bits OS My specs are: w7 pro 64 bits 4gb in dual channel core2 quad 6600 @2,40 nvidia GTX460 1GB (285.62 drivers) |
Hi,
Got plenty of RAM, 16g on a Windows 7 64bit, IL2 runs pretty good off-line. Can get on-line and fly around, but for some reason, it crashes randomly. Again, don't seem to have any probs off-line, but on-line, random crashes; it just freezes up, then windows says that "launcher.exe stop responding..bla bla bla". Kind of wierd. I did notice that my network card had a driver update, so I am going to apply the update and see if it helps, but I'm not real optimistic. |
You must have a 64bit OS to run this game.
However it doesnt seem to matter now. CTD's are worse than in BETA patch 1 and 2... |
I have been around these forums for a number of years with a different login name, mainly reading and gleaming info with occasional posts,
I just wanted to add my thoughts, the launcher problem certainly seems worse after the last patch, I have 12GB of ram. launching/starting the game with Track Ir, Teamspeak 3 and the joystick profile software running uses about 3.4 GB, the game will crash/lock up when the memory leak builds up to a total use of 5.9>6.0 GB used every time. My squad has just decided to move to this game engine for our "official" mission nights and this bug is already causing issues for most of us with random lockups/crashes for most of us and a regular lockup/crash for the host. So for a candidate for understatement of the year so far....... I am finding this mildly annoying !! |
