Off Topic forums? here

I've had some postings asking for a General Discussion forums. We have it already and this is it. You click on IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover and that is what this is.

What about what they call "Off topic" forum at Ubisoft. People could express their opinions in off topics, and have more verbal freedom (no vulgarity of course)

Do you want an Off Topic forums here?

jimbop 07-23-2011 03:03 AM

Not keen - doubt it would get used any more than the sub-forums that serve a useful purpose unless the main page dumping ground was tightened up.

As someone heavily involved in the drama at Ubi that resulted in the 'no politics' ruling in their off-topic forum (though this is now only enforced if it gets too confrontational), I'm perhaps not best placed to give an impartial opinion, but here goes anyway:

Yes, but...

* It will need a moderator willing to ensure that debates don't get personal - indeed they will probably need to be kept less personal than those we often see here. While I'm sure that you (Nearmiss) are capable of doing this, you will be taking on a lot of extra work.

* It needs to be restricted to those who use the CloD/IL-2 forums already - the Ubi forum attracted a certain amount of 'outside participation' from people with no interest at all in IL-2. You'll need to make it clear that it is a place were forum regulars debate off-topic, rather than a soapbox for everyone and anyone. People who show no evidence of interest in the sims, but instead arrive with an agenda, should be shown the door.

* It will need a big sticky note at the top reading 'participation in this forum is voluntary'. If people don't want to read Raaaid's latest explanation of why the universe is in fact pyramid-shaped, rather than a four-dimensional torus (as the physicists insist), they don't have to. Inevitably, a lot of off-topic threads aren't particularly of interest to some people, but that isn't a reason to demand that the thread be deleted, and we all have our minds erased by the Men in Black to destroy all evidence of said thread.

But yes, if you (or another moderator) is ready with a fly-swatter for those who can't debate things without making comments regarding the marital status of their opponent's parents etc, then I'd say go ahead - it might even help cool things down a little if we can talk about other stuff.

This poll will run for 10 days. We will see how members think of this.

Members that post off topic, regardless of content can dwell in that forums.

Andy you are correct moderation will take on new perspectives.

Jaws2002 07-23-2011 05:56 AM

Yes please.

Ataros 07-23-2011 08:10 AM

Yes, please.

But could you please also have a look at several suggestions here http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthr...542#post312542

OT section only will not solve all the forum issues imho.

im not surprised by this, from a year or 2 before the politics ban till the day of the politcs ban that was by far the best forum i read, containing far more information and news from all over the world than the 8'o clock news report.

unfortonatly the ban screwed that, and now ubi forum is limited to 1 or 2 threads a day about some not so important news :(

Ze-Jamz 07-23-2011 08:31 AM

Yes..

whoarmongar 07-23-2011 08:42 AM

Why bother. Every thread goes off topic within two pages

Rattlehead 07-23-2011 09:15 AM

I'd like one.

kristorf 07-23-2011 09:42 AM

Dunno about an off topic forum, but I do know those who troll, flame and insult other people on a regular basis (and we all know the main offenders) should get an instant perma ban.
More and more people are staying away as near on every topic degenerates to the same level.

JG52Uther 07-23-2011 09:49 AM

Yes

ZaltysZ 07-23-2011 10:36 AM

Yes, we need off topic / free subject subforum here.

Mysticpuma 07-23-2011 12:58 PM

I don't actually think this forum should exist. I think the Cliffs of Dover link should just take you to the page that shows a list of Sub-Forums. That way people can post where the subject is relevent.

Currently all this forum is used for is

1) Where's the next patch

2) Why is the game broke

3) Why won't Luthier talk to us

4) Where's the next patch

5) Tracer's are wrong

That's all that gets posted here, so I suggest getting rid of this forum and making people post in the sub-forums only.

Currently they sit at the top of the page and everyone moans here.

I also think it would be great to have a dedicated off-topic section.

The entry page to this board (When you click on IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover) should be locked for normal users and be used for official announcements only. This would somehow 'force' (although I don't like that word in this context ;) ) the users to place their topic into the related sub-board, which would enhance the readability.

When speaking of the sub-boards, I find it often confusing to see the same threads appear in different sub-boards, for example topics inside the "Technical threads" board are also shown in the "FM/DM threads" board. Maybe it's just me but I find this really unusual and confusing ;)

Nevertheless, thanks for asking for our opinion :D

SG1_Lud 07-23-2011 01:55 PM

Very much needed nearmiss. I think too often people come here looking for useful information, and when they found nonsense get upset. That is no helping the convivence in the forum.
Thanks for asking.

Tree_UK 07-23-2011 03:03 PM

I thought we had an off topic forum, i.e. this one, all the detailed stuff is above.

Blackdog_kt 07-23-2011 07:04 PM

Actually i think that what's needed is a way to contain the argumentative, stirring-the-pot behaviour by giving it a place to occur, but one that is confined and strictly moderated.

My suggestion from another thread:

Besides i think it would have the reverse effect you want if you get rid of this area then the sub forums would just get hijacked for most of this type of posting and then you would need to get rid of those and start new ones and so on and so on.

This is exactly why i wouldn't do away with the general discussion area, it would break open the "playground gates" and have the effect of these posts spilling out into the more useful sub-forums.

If anything, i would go about it the opposite way: keep a certain venue for argumentative posts, speculation and forum-fighting for those interested in it and as a place to vent, but tightly contain it to a single thread.

I vote for a single sticky thread titled "Rants, arguments and speculation megathread". Any post or thread that just aims to stir things up gets promptly moved/merged from its original location into the megathread. This way people who want to argue can still do so and the rest can easily ignore them without having to scroll through half the first page.

The only drawback is that it requires some work from the moderators but to be perfectly honest, they already have their hands full as it is.
Maybe it would actually be easier for them to just cut and paste/merge the offending posts or threads into a single "quarantine" sticky, than having to paste big, bold red letters on offending posts, keep tabs of how many strikes each poster has before a ban is instituted and so on. Just move everything that causes trouble to a single thread and let them go about their business without being able to influence other threads and pull them off-topic.

What do you think moderators?

I think it will also have the welcome side-effect of being hard to follow the flow of discussion (since it would be a bunch of posts moved from other threads, without the supporting context and flow of the original conversation), so it would discourage the behaviour even more.

Viking 07-23-2011 07:08 PM

No thanks!
Been there done that! Had the Pilots lounge, remember? Whent from bad to worst.
A "game" with guns attracts a very strange crowd of people. Better let them stay under the rock. We have far more to discuss on topic in this forum.

raaaid 07-24-2011 02:18 PM

im not very sure i like to post ot but the ubizoo has a special place in my heart

Seeker 07-24-2011 04:13 PM

This IS the off topic forum.

All the other single issue fora such as tech, controls, FMB, game play etc.etc. already exist and are clearly marked at the top of the page.

raaaid 07-24-2011 05:12 PM

well my thread on other games as poker or train sims got locked for being too much reported so this is not ot

Vengeanze 07-26-2011 03:54 PM

A subforum for OT would help alot to filter out nonCLOD related threads.
It's very much needed.

Don't get your point but I'll confess to nothing without solid proof. And even then I'll claim to have been misinterpreted. :-P
