System specs.
Now only Oleg knows what system specs we will need for SoW (and he ain't saying just yet) so lets see what everyone is currently playing il2 with, and see how many of us actually have a slight chance of playing SoW.
My specs: windows XP AMD 3700+ processor MSI K8N SLI mobo (never bothered with sli though) Sapphire X1950 pro 512 GFX card 2 X 1 gb ram Samsung 226BW 22' widescreen monitor (my new baby, but I think it might kill me when SoW is released) Now,I actually have no plans to upgrade for Sow,at least not at the begining,as I really hope that Oleg will cater for people with less powerful rigs.I doubt many in Russia have 'uber' computers, and they make up a pretty large percentage of Olegs customers. |
E6850 Core Duo 3.0 ghz.
8800GTS 320mb. 2x 1 Gb RAM Win XP excellent DirX9 I'm starting to struggle a bit on very big missions with my new set-up... so looking at the trains and buildings on the german website in such fine detail.... I know my system will only struggle with SOW too... if it comes out in late 2008...as many suppose...then hopefully hardware will be able to keep up with the demands of the software |

I am afraid even Oleg doesnt know specs yet, otherwise he would have said something already... To know the specs SOW needs to be assembled 100% and all the gizmos turned on.. When it gets to that point, i am sure we will all know what does it take to run it.

This is my gaming computer:
Antec 900 | E6850 | Nforce680i SLI | 4GB RAM | 8800GTX-SLI | Seasonic 700W | Raptor 150 | Seagate 750 | Creative XFi | Vista x86 New high end graphics cards from Nvidia are expected in February, btw. |
I put my present gaming computer together in early Spring 2006, when it became apparent that my 4 y/o P4 2.4Ghz that had soldiered on with IL2FB was now straining under the new release IL2-1946.
The new rig was still a budget rig, with no intentions of requiring it to meet the needs of the SOW series. I expect that i'll need to replace my rig entirely a year or so after SOW:BoB is released - until then, i'll continue playing the IL2-1946 sim. I simply can't afford to, nor justify replacing my primary gaming computer until 3-4 years has passed, so i'll have to sit SOW out until then. The present gaming rig (only used for 1946, really). Pentium 4 - C2D E6300 - Intel 965 mobo 2 GB DC Ram NVidia PNY 7600GS 512mb PCI-E video Dual 19" BenQ LCD panels X52 Hotas and pedals Nostromo N52 gamepad TrackIR3 Full simpit .. and not a lick of personal flight talent to hit the broad-side of a barn with bullets or airplane after 4+ years. Great idea, here’s my homegrown specs:
Windoze xp sp2 home Viewsonic vx922 2.04m IL-2 OPEN GL 1280X960X32 ATTEMPT STENCIL BUFER VIS DISTANCE – HI OBJECT LIGHTING – MED OBJECT DETAIL – EXCELLENT LANDSCAPE LIGHTING – HI LANDSCAPE DETAIL – EXCELLENT CLOUDS DETAIL – MED CONFIG.INI LOCKED WITH WATER =0 NVIDIA NFORCEWARE DRIVERS VER 6.14.11.6921 12-5-07 THE BLACK DEATH 10 SEC 40 FPS 20 SEC 55 FPS 1.07 SEC 15 FPS (*) (*) This is the lowest point, at the time of explosion you can see the fps really drop to a crawl approx 1 min 7 seconds. Vid Card settings are application controlled with VSYNC forced OFF. Things look pretty good all around. At perfect settings the visual quality is not noticeably better but FPS definitely drop. So this is how I run, I don’t seem to lose visuals but the FPS are more playable – smoother. Prior drivers were 6.6.9.3 and 7.1.77, I think my FPS @ 1.07 might have been 17-18 with the 6.6.9.3 drivers. I may revert. |

So what will the optimal system be in a year when BoB is released only taking in to account what we know today?
Opsys = 64 bit CPU = 3 or 4 core 64 bit GPU = eg G92 ,1G DDR, OGL 3, displayport RAM = 4G ddr3 MB = PCIe 3.0, DX 10.1 sound, legacy free HD = SSD, SATA 3 Screen = displayport, 1080p Just rambling what I can recall reading on the net. Anything else or any corrections. BTW if I will be able to run SoW BoB on my present computer I doubt that I will by it. |
Intel 6850 @3 gigs
Corsair DDR2-1066 4 gigs Nvidia 7900GTX waiting for BOB to upgrade to a next generation video card I've overclocked the cpu from @ 3.2 , 3.6, 3.8, and 4 gigs. I was getting huge frame rates in the black death track. At one point during a 4 gig test my system crashed and I restored the BIO defaults. Since then when I overclock the cpu and test with the Black Death track my frame rates actually fall. Cpu Z shows the proper overclock, and all the cpu heat tests I run show that the cpu isn't over heating. The only thing that I found different is the Windows task manager shows IL-2 using only 50% of the cpu and I thought IL-2 used almost 100%. I have the Speedstep disabled in the BIO's and the cpu doesn't seem to be downclocking when running a intensive app. I'm at a loss. It don't need the speed now but would like to overclock again when BOB comes out. ~Salute~ Chivas |

As others have said, I hope BoB will be as adjustable as IL2 has remained throughout. I'm still running perfect settings and getting good on-line play - but I won't be able to afford a major up-grade for quite a few years.
Hopefully Excellent setting, or its equivalent, will still offer the opportunity to enjoy the up-coming game. B. AMD 2x4600, DFI NF4 Ultra SLi, 2 Gb Mushkin PC3200HP, Ati x1950Pro, Raptor 74Gb, Hiper 670W PSU. All water-cooled, running XP-Pro x86 |
Brandon...
Looks like you have a top shelf PC! From my experience and the rigs of my friends your specs seem to have the best chance of not needing an upgrade IF BOB SOW is ever released.
One observation is that although I have the fastest LCD available, these new LCD's cant present a fluid game like CRT's can. No one sells CRT's anymore as they are not as fashionable , albeit much bulkier. For gaming the best LCD is not as fluid and pleasurable as a good CRT. I miss my CRT! The LCDs for flight combat sims are the weak point. Only when one compares them side by side will you notice the significant difference. I owned and flew a good high refresh rate CRT for years, and I still miss it for smooth fluid solid looking moving objects. For example, and object whizzing by on a good CRT appears solid and well focused, it just moves quickly. On a LCD it is fuzzy, does not appear sharp, it appears fuzzy and not in focus. LCD's ghost period, the degree toi which ghosting appears depends on speed of movement. In the slow moving games one might not notice, but it is indeed there. In IL-2 I notice it everywhere and all the time. My friends who have never gamed on a CRT don't know what they're missing. I miss my CRT! My two cents. See you in UBI !! |
Yeah, the Iiyama will only go when it dies on me. As you say, the response and clarity surpasses anything I've seen from an LCD screen.

Same here. My 21” Samsung SyncMaster 1100p+ is doing a good job at 1600x1200 @ 85 hz.
|
Stop !!!!
Must you all taunt me so?
I looked all over town last year and no one had any CRT's whatsoever :(. Enjoy it while you can. I just posted my findings cause all the reviewers said..either there was no ghosting or it was unnoticeable. Yes if you play pacman..perhaps.. but if you play anything that moves faster then your grandma's hair growin in her sleep...GHOSTS DO EXIST!. Peace :) |

Talleyho....
Our systems are very similiar. If you run it with only one stick (1g) ram, how does it compare to two G?
I know the DDR throughput will be slightly diminished but I was curious the diff between a pair of .5G sticks totalling 1G versus a pair of 1.0G sticks with total of 2G ram. Loading diff? Rejoin lag pause? |
Spudley:
It's been a while since I added the second stick - probably two years - but as best I can recall the most obvious improvement versus 1G was game load time. Come to think of it, the RAM doubling was part of a major new MoBo upgrade so I can't actually isolate the impact. I know that's not much help, but it's the best I can do. |
wHEN YOURE BORED...
..perhaps you could do the testing 1 vs 2g by simple removing the ram, testing, placing it back in, then redoing to confirm. Time the load times, loading same mission. I think youre right prob no effect on game play as with 1G I always have free ram. I also wonder if ones amt of ram effects the rejoin lag, when you fly and someone rejoins, or hits refly. The game freezed for a fraction of sec. I suspect this is driven by distances/pings between all players to the host and to each other, and also by the hosts PC and connection speed.
Just curious. PEACE |
