Friday July 1 Update – Meet the Team

Sometimes, mere words are not enough.

Sometimes, it’s important to see the faces that give you all those emotions.

So let’s start.

(I’m a game developer, not a photographer, OK)

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6035/...fa044a3c76.jpg

This is Valery Kornilov, our new sound designer. We are redoing our sound from scratch. It is proceeding at a better pace than expected. It’s already in a working alpha state, and everyone loves it. The only thing that makes it an alpha is that a lot of events do not play sounds yet. 95% of the remaining work is simply adding new samples.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5031/...8827e804c3.jpg

This is our modeling isle. Sergey Karavayev is the owner of the sexy derriere you see in the bottom left. He’s the guy who built the BR-20M for Cliffs of Dover, and tons of planes for Il-2. He is also the author of the silhouetted plane some of you may remember from V-E day.
The striped shirt above Sergey belongs to Peter Vysotin, our genius landscape programmer and hardware expert. They are installing a brand new GeForce 570 into Sergey’s machine.
Above them is Marina Kurdyukova, our MAI-educated 3D modeler who continues to create great-looking 3D models for BoB’s sequel.
Ilya Steshov is the striped shirt behind her. He’s also our 3D modeler, ship expert, and game designer currently working on various multiplayer scripts and play testing.
The empty seat behind him belongs to Pavel Kayuroff, our self-taught jack of all trades genius who is currently taking over some aircraft physics tasks.
Oleg Radyshevsky, our jolly giant, is sitting there modeling a Soviet pilot uniform. He is the guy who made most of the characters you see in Cliffs of Dover.
The shy guy in headphones is Dima Bespyatkin, our underappreciated aircraft modeler who built Cliffs of Dover’s Hurricane. First one to guess what he’s building now wins, I don’t know, probably nothing at all.

Let’s move over to the expert row.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5023/...dcda02d5d7.jpg

Dirk-something number 7 is Lesha Pervov, our all-around programming expert. He is currently discussing improvements to the shoreline render with Vitaly Melehin, the uncharacteristically handsome graphics programmer. He is the person behind the amazing optimization effort and performance improvements that we all witnessed over the past few months.
The head behind them belongs to Vitaly Kozhevnikov, our map maker. Winter is coming.
The two gentlemen on the other side our walking aircraft encyclopedias, Alexander Porozov and Yuri Shoubin. Also MAI-educated, with decades of combined experience building real aircraft at Sukhoi OKB, they know everything there is to know about aircraft.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5032/...9cf8191cb0.jpg

The other side of the room contains Mikhail Volkov, our new aircraft AI expert, who is continuing to work on the orders menu. Behind him is Igor Egorov, our lead programmer and the guy without whom neither Cliffs of Dover nor the original Il-2 could have ever been anything.

And finally, in the darkest corner of the office, is Gennady.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6038/...0acdbd450b.jpg

No one knows what he does.

Insuber 07-01-2011 03:01 PM

Good luck chaps - bon courage.

albx 07-01-2011 03:02 PM

Thank you very much Luthier, :-)

Pudfark 07-01-2011 03:02 PM

That's a good start...

Baron 07-01-2011 03:03 PM

Nice to see the faces behind it and to hear all the things that`s coming. Most of all the sounds. :)

JumpingHubert 07-01-2011 03:04 PM

I hope Valery Kornilov the new soundengineer find this
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=23533
or this thread
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=23775
for inspiration :)

@Mr Kornilov
great choice the igrado. But had to correct frequency @8k to -6,4dB via x-fi equilizer.

159th_Jester 07-01-2011 03:05 PM

Luthier forgot someone....... Himself. :)

lensman1945 07-01-2011 03:07 PM

Great to see everyone!

And tantalising snippets of things to come....:-)

Jatta Raso 07-01-2011 03:08 PM

apparently someone did read that PR liaison thing... nice, found very interesting to see that there's more to it than a semi-deserted office with 2-3 chaps sitting around...

Winger 07-01-2011 03:10 PM

Nice to see all the face and foremost MANY of em:) Also i am really happy to hear that the squelching of your sound issues is progressing well. Really looking forward to finally play the game on a daily online basis.

Winger

Lololopoulos 07-01-2011 03:12 PM

good to see the team!! thank you developers!!!!

Dano 07-01-2011 03:15 PM

Nice to see some faces and hear some hints as to what is on the way :)

So do we get to test the alpha sound engine at all? :D

LOL, that's what we say about some of our superiors. ;)

sigintwarrior 07-01-2011 03:20 PM

Dima Bespyatkin is modeling a FW-190! Oh Oh Oh..... Or a P-47!!! Oh Oh Oh!!!! Or maybe an X-Wing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET IT BE AN X-WING!!!!!!

Sorry.... got carried away.

Anyhow, Oleg Radyshevsky is working on a Soviet uniform? Guess we know where the first expansion is gonna be.

Is that an IL-2 Joystick box on Mikhail Volkov's desk? Where can I get one of those?

I think Gennady, over there in the dark corner of the office, looks pretty sinister. Probably ex-GRU, there to keep an eye on everyone..... I can hear him now.... "BACK TO WORK! NO TALKING! WHY ARE YOU CRYING???? THERE IS NO CRYING IN GAME DESIGNING!!!!":-P

Keep up the good work guys. We are counting on you.

PeterPanPan 07-01-2011 03:26 PM

This is such a good post Luthier - thank you. Putting faces to names and faces to as yet unknown developers is a genius idea. Really looking forward to the new sound and continued progress with CoD.

PPP

FlyingShark 07-01-2011 03:27 PM

Nice to see the people, good luck. But like someone mentioned before, when are we gonna see Luthier himself?

~S~

335th_GRAthos 07-01-2011 03:27 PM

That was nice Luthier but, where is a picture of yourself????

You know, to print it, cut it and add it to the iconostasis (wall with icons (sacred pictures)),
...or put it on the Dartboard (if things do not turn up) ;)

Thanks for the feedback and for the time you spent thinking about us! :)

nice week end!

LoBiSoMeM 07-01-2011 03:28 PM

Great team. Keep the good work!

SG1_Lud 07-01-2011 03:32 PM

Very nice, and very smart of you Luthier, thanks.

The post is a joy, but even more is read between the lines; it can be seen that you keep the optimistim and you have had more time too. Both are very good signs to see in the ship's Captain.

cheers!

Oh I almost forgot.

You forgot the rabbit. Please post a pic of the rabbit in good shape, so that Tree_UK can sleep well tonight.

Luthier, are you a "A Game of Thrones" fan by any chance ?? ;)

Thanks for the heads up, good to see that you are all very busy in correcting/improving the game but looking also at future already, should give some hope to those who think COD is dead already. :)

furbs 07-01-2011 03:41 PM

Luthier...nice to see some faces!

Now...Luthier, can i ask you something....what is happening with FSAA in COD?

There is no way on earth it is working and each time (and there has been 100s of threads or posts) somebody asks you dont even acknowledge there is a problem.

So is FSAA going to ever work in COD?

and when is the next patch? :)

I know what he's modelling ;)

adonys 07-01-2011 03:47 PM

you mean, the dark side of the force :D

See, it's not so hard, and we're not a so hard to please monkey crowd.. We just need honesty, and a fair relationship: give and take in as fairest amount as possible.

Even if you haven't said a word of game's state, it's enough for as, as it represents exactly what we ask from you guys: the will to openly communicate with us.

So.. thanks for the update, Luthier! And all of you have a nice weekend :)

Rattlehead 07-01-2011 03:47 PM

This is something of a masterstroke.

Certainly putting these pictures out adds a personal touch, and something that was a pleasant surprise. It's nice to meet the team, and it's good to see them smiling and not looking like they're going to hang themselves any minute.
If you guys are still enjoying what you do, then I think it bodes very well for the future of the series.

It also bears pointing out to the forum members that the team is really small by development standards, and that we must remember that when we demand immediate improvements to the game.

Anyway, thanks Luthier for this post. It was a nice surprise.

PS-Now, a photo of yourself would be good.

Strike 07-01-2011 03:49 PM

Hey that's the best friday update in ages! Glad to see the team and that your office has LCD monitors and not oscilloscopes :D Wish you all the best of luck and I am really really looking forward to be "hearing" (wink) from your soundguy in the future :D

Ze-Jamz 07-01-2011 03:56 PM

Take my hat of to you for such a post, it's a bit late coming but it makes all the difference when it comes to bonding with the community, you have basically gave me something to grasp onto when I'm or We are talking about issue and patches etc instead of having an image of you on your own with a mountain of things to do and ready to throw the towel in.

I'm looking forward to the next patch as I'm guessing it will contain the new sounds wether they are Beta or not who knows

Dietger 07-01-2011 04:01 PM

Love your humor Luthier - keep it!

Hello Team!
Great to see some faces or asses at least! LOL
A heartfelt
"Thank you for all the endless hours!"
Don't stop! We're with you.

S!
Dietger

Ataros 07-01-2011 04:05 PM

Surprisingly small team!..

nearmiss 07-01-2011 04:08 PM

I count 15 people in the photos + Luthier.

How many people do you think it takes?

I'm very pleased to see how many people are involved.

Next week the naysayers will be whining as usual.

How soon they forget!

addman 07-01-2011 04:12 PM

Many thanks for the post and the pictures. This is really restoring a lot of hope for me personally. Keep the good work up!

P.S Your update actually made me want to play the game again, don't ask me how. :)

Plt Off JRB Meaker 07-01-2011 04:14 PM

What a pleasant surprise, thanks for posting Luthier,as the rest,it's nice to see the team, good luck guys.

Strike 07-01-2011 04:16 PM

You know the ultimate badass friday update for next week would have been the original "engine start video effect with sound place holder" released by Oleg Maddox in late 2010 with your new sound :) I think that would seriously slaughter the soundwhiners around here :D

That team is not small its tiny if you should create such a post with members of lets say Call of Duty dev team it would be several pages long

damn, never happy eh?

quantity doesn't always mean quality... for example X-Plane is made by only 1 guy

Battlefield was by 1 guy on first release

alexm2323 07-01-2011 04:59 PM

Ignoring overtime:

15 people x 8 hours
= 120 hours/ day
= 600 hours/week of coding.
I can live with that quite happily.

Maybe... "the guy" from Ubisoft?...

It is not a criticism at all. Rather, it clarifies certain things, like for example why the development of the sim took quite some time, and why we cannot expect major changes overnight.

Towarisch 07-01-2011 05:49 PM

Thanks for the update Luthier.

The thing is I have the same Sim on my PC as you do why am I now so poor and your not?:)

After the last patch, this sim just simply the best up to date WWII sim.

I try and fly other sims but just keep coming back to CLoD. Even with the work that it needs. I'm getting pretty good at bombing London Bridge.:)

1 thing that I did see in the Video is you do not speak in the native language in Moscow (Russia).

You speak English. And your phone ringer is a U.S. song. Are you from the USA?

Keep up the good work Team CLoD.

Teacher. English, I think. That was my favorite part of the movie. To ME it brought a human touch to the war you rarely see in movies.

Luthier, thanks. To the team? Keep up the good work. One thing Luthier said that gave a bit of confidence as to the longevity of CoD is "The sequel to BoB." I'm looking forward to the U.S release and to it's subsequent additions.

See you next Friday?

Judging by the dolls on his desk, he appears to be working on the human form for the sim. The disturbing part is that the dolls appear to be half dressed:grin:...is that Oleg's old corner desk?

Trumper 07-01-2011 08:35 PM

Wasn't there a lovely young lady in Olegs earlier update posts?
Question, does "new sounds" mean realistic sounds?
Nice to see the team together, lets hope they are still there after the release in the USA to keep the sim moving forward.

Ummm this should drive all the girls crazy.

This man is listed on the ROF website as Sound-Master: Valery Kornilov.

DOH!

Damn,

it makes it so much harder to throw bricks when you've seen their sweet faces!

Lock Valery in the office and don't let him come out until the sound bug is fixed. 2 weeks, be sure! Meantime tell him we've moved to ROF to sample his work until he finishes the job.

I think Luthier is Gennady, grown a moustache. He has that look that says "Post that again and I'll...."

I did not see a picture of the new community manager.

I guess finding one of those is a lot harder than finding a good programmer.

After reading the job description who would want the job.

Besides Luthier is doing an excellent job.

Don't be ridiculous, a simple 'great, ok, rubbish etc' would suffice. Laptop isn't broken, it just hasn't got a decent set of speakers like my desktop system has.

Would give a Finger to see a Sneakpeek on the New sounds =P
the Sounds for me is 1 of the most Inportant thing in any sim and the 1 thing where il2 Lacks This far.

Sorry I wasn't trying to be ridiculous to you I apologize. But they are very good.

But still get a Bluetooth headset / ear buds for your laptop.

Dano 07-01-2011 10:06 PM

I've no need for it, I'll have access to my desktop in an hour or so, I just wanted to see what peoples opinions were.

Nice to meet new guys and again see the old folks working on the il2 years ago. Keep the faith in your job and don`t ever let the naysayers get you down. You`re creating something BIG I mean BIG!

Mods have received too many complaints from angry parents about profanity on 1C games forums.

Guys you may think you are in a adult world, but when something is called a game.... well, it does have appeal to the kiddies too.

Therefore, stomping on a few toes for profanity on these forums... hopefully everyone will get the message.

Yes indeed I have to watch it myself. I wish there was an adult section.

Something for people over 21.

Then another section for people WAY over 21 with hearing aid ads all over it.

There Shouldn't be any complaints about enforcing this rule. Everyone agreed to follow the forum rule including -
[QUOTE]5. Obscene language, offensive or threatening content, drugs propaganda, political or religious agitation and propaganda, appeals to overthrows of power, incitement of ethnic hatred, disparagement on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, faith and other socially unacceptable expressions are prohibited in this forum. I spend most of my professional life dealing with teenagers, some with fairly harsh backgrounds. After spending most days dealing with foul language, the last thing I want to have in my recreational time is swearing and rude behaviour. It's too much like work!

Thanks!
