I believed that wreckage recovery was forbidden / very difficult in UK due to the war graves law.

Derinahon 06-28-2011 01:14 PM

Well the pilot bailed in this case, so they don't expect to find a body :) Unless I'm misunderstanding you?

No145_Hatter 06-28-2011 01:42 PM

I remember my Dad taking me to Rye Police Station in the '80s to see recovered wreckage from a Spitfire. The pilot hadn't bailed from this one.

it could have been nice if the time team had done this and televised it. i would have enjoyed that.

Derinahon 06-28-2011 02:03 PM

It will be televised next year apparently. Part of a series of WW2 related digs.

"DigWW2

@DigWW2 Battlefields

Upcoming BBC series presented by Dan Snow about WW2 archaeology in the UK, Northern Ireland & Arnhem, Holland, Italy and Normandy."

No it looks like it'll be a BBc show and probably will be shown by RTE as well at some stage ...........

Sternjaeger 06-28-2011 03:52 PM

the only point of danger and caution when digging relics, other than the possibility to find the pilot's rests, is the handling of unexploded ordnance/ammunition. In the case of cannons, the amount of explosives present in the shells can still be very dangerous, both for the instability of explosives left to the elements and because of the amount of them.

Why go though all this when you could do this.

Much much cheaper and a lot easier and I can't tell a difference. The Spit lives again in Texas.

Derinahon 06-28-2011 06:01 PM

Because some like their Spits slightly aged and covered in Irish bog
