Duxford Flying Legends 9th July

It's that time of year again...

http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...l/IMG_1109.jpg
http://i941.photobucket.com/albums/a...IMG_1099-1.jpg

...and the Duxford wing is once again making our annual pilgrimage to the alter of all things piston powered.
McQ and Kav are once again being flown in to take part in this mission whilst Jack and myself are making our way down from T'north to collect brother Dave whilst F1rebrand is making an assault from the east.
I know Irishjg stated he was likely going with speedbird and Boar hinted he was going to try and get there too.
The PC guys (lewis and crew) are also going to be there so it's looking like a good turn out from us pixel flyers.
I just wanted to extend an invite to anyone else to what is one hell of a weekend with much merriment, dagga dagga dagga and 'repeat please' type humour. So if dossing around with a bunch of middle aged kids is your idea of fun let of us know and we'll come and bundle you on the day!!!

Irishjg drop me a PM if you're still going and I'll give you my contact details.

FOZ_1983 06-21-2011 10:42 AM

Excellent pics!!

I'd love to go, always wanted to get to Duxford. Unfortunately all my hols are booked up so cant get the time off...

Though...

I've currently got a cast on my wrist, and been struck off work for 2 months..... ;)

It'll be a great day guys im sure.

Very Envious

I hope to go the next year. But with the olimpic games, i don´t know if i have some problem (travel, plane ticket, hotel, etc...)

I've heard of a class of ticket "VIP" to approach to aircraft. Gilly, you know something?. Can you purchase the same day?. As you know I'm not from England.

Can I buy tickets on the day? Or is it better to buy tickets online in advance?

Have fun mates ;)

There's the regular entrance which gets you in (£29 this year)and access the the flight line was only £2 I think last year which gets you up close and personal with the aircraft flying (pics above are from the flight line). The VIP or gold tickets also give you lunch and a private seating area.
I've always pre-ordered tickets but you can just turn up on the day (jack did
last year).
As for the Olympics you'd be better off saving the money and having a proper weekend up the road with the warbirds!!!

Ze-Jamz 06-21-2011 12:50 PM

Il be there, going on the Sunday..

Cool, we met a few PC guys last year (we're not worthy!!) who are there again this year. If you fancy a warm beer give us a shout and I'll drop my contact details over.

Thank you very much Gilly. No doubt that I'm saving to see these winged beauties :-P
The question is whit the Olympic Games, the travel and accommodation prices will be more expensive

The access to flight line, do you pay there?

Thank you for your attention

Bring a tent and camp like we did. That worked out about £12 per night per person.
The flight line you pay for as you enter it. I think last years proceeds went to a local charity.
Well worth every penny.

Looks like I'm going down on the 9th this year! First time going down.. Going with the dad so I can't come join you. If thee is a sim set up somewhere (those over priced sims are everywhere! :P) I'll give you a chance to shoot me down! ;))

If you see a 17 year old kid, 6foot 2, longer hair and wearing aviators - that's me. Safe to say: I'm excited!

McQ59 06-22-2011 03:19 PM

It's getting closer... And closer...
Hope to see a lot of you gents. Keep your head on a swivel :-)

Meet you there next year! Can't make it this summer :(
I miss some english beer soooo much!

@ Gilly: In italy it's still possible to see the Baracca's engine, taken from his last plane crash. It's expsed at "Museo storico dell'Aereonautica" on the Bracciano Lake, near Rome.

Myself and Jack are staying at Essex's premier 5 star hotel known as Davedog Towers!! Kav and McQ are staying in Cambridge. If your after a good campsite the one at Cabbage Moor was where we stayed last year and is a superb campsite. The Skies of fire (PC) guys will be there.

Gilly 07-04-2011 09:20 AM

I suggest that a good meeting point is on the grass behind the F15 by the American hangar at say midday.

Back home from Legends. Simply stunning.

I choked up about 4 times. The Spits and the Hurricane (the best of the two ;)), the P51's and the balbo, to name a few pieces that choked me up. It was truly amazing. Awesome. I am still speechless.

WOW!

I hope all you guys tomorrow really have a great day!

Great to meet up with the old crew again and to see the IL-2 community is still going strong.

SEE 07-09-2011 08:55 PM

Absolutely awesome! I never imagined that some of these aircraft were so large - the P47 is a beast and and Me109's much smaller than I imagined. Seeing virtually all of the classic Warbirds we love in the air and being put through their paces was a revelation!

Thanks to all the guys, McQ, Gilly , etc, for making a BOP Xboxer welcome, great to meet you all and many thanks for the IL2 Duxford Legends 'T- Shirt' (Obligatory dress code requirement as shown above...)

Nine Spits and three Me109's all in formation then breaking off ......won't see that very often or a Bearcat pulling 7 G in an almost vertical climb. Brilliant flying by all the pilots today and excellent to watch.

Will post pics if any are good enough!

P-51 07-09-2011 09:17 PM

Brilliant T-shirt!

I forgot to mention, while my eyes wern't attempting the leaky-thing I did manage to gat around 500 photographs o.0

I'll be sure to post some, don't worry :)

I've also decided that I will be there next year. I'll be there to mingle too. I really Can Not Wait! That is what An Airshow Should be. And to think I discovered it at 17, Lucky me!

hurricane 07-10-2011 12:51 AM

not even the slightest bit of envy here.what about pictures of the trip and camping out.getting there is half the fun.how much for the t shirt.what about the sound of the engines?

Dibs on the Hurricane!!! Look at her... how majestic she looks!!! Beautiful!!!

As for Soviet Ace..... not seen him in a while. He's not been active either. Sent him a message a couple of months back but heard nothing from him.

P-51 down guys.. Big Beautiful Doll is down.. Clipped one of the Skyraiders in the Balbo..

Everyone is down ok. The Raider is missing 4ft of wing but, from what I understand, landed safely. The P-51 is smoking in a field..

I'm doing some digging as we speak.

"The pilot was seen parachuting out and is ok - this has been announced over the airfield. The Skyraider, missing a large chunk of it's right wing, was able to make a safe landing at Duxford. It happened after the break away at the end of the Balbo."

As I understand it, the Skyraider hit the 51 and broke its back in mid flight...

From a reliable source of mine, It happened over the Tank Bank apparently, As soon as pics are available I'll post them.

Yup that skyraider is broken. If you have to fly and land a plane with a large piece of wing missing, The skyraider is a good choice.

A shame the accident and the loss of the Mustang. Fortunately no loss of life

I read on my search, not sure about its validity, that one in the states crashed like this and is being straightened out - no idea how bad it is. He did say that they aren't hard to re build, just costly..

Maybe we can live in hope and fly a missing man formaition of 51's on BoP?

Robotic Pope 07-10-2011 09:13 PM

I can determin that that Mustang has become unserviceable.

Great bailout photos. Looks like the Skyraider violated the Mustang. :o

FOZ_1983 07-10-2011 09:33 PM

The wings and the engine on the P51 seem to be in good condition, the only noticeable damage being just behind the radiator.

WW2 aircraft have been through much worse and still made it home. Flaps/elevators look ok to. I'd love to know more about this particular accident as it looks at first glance like the P51 could of comfortably landed. Or at the very least glided into a field....

Is it just me that thinks this?

Maybe its an insurance job ;)

You're right. It seems that there might be returned. Perhaps, after the impact was impossible for the pilot to regain control and decided to jump before running out of height

FOZ_1983 07-10-2011 09:47 PM

The plot thickens!!

bobbysocks 07-10-2011 09:52 PM

from cambridge first...

One of the aircraft lost “chunks” of its wing.

The pilot of one plane parachuted to safety before it crashed into trees and the other aircraft was able to fly away safely and land. No one was injured in the crash which involved a P-51 Mustang and a Skyraider.

Mark Brown, a pilot, from Warminster, was at the air show and witnessed the crash.

He said: “Three aircrafts form a triangle and then they peel off to the left one after the other. As they did that the leader and the one that was following clipped each other.

“The Sky Raider lost a large chunk of its wing tip which fell to the ground.

“It went into a bit of a dive then sorted itself out. The other aircraft dived away from the airfield.

“They were only about 100 feet at this point.

“Then we saw someone jump out and a parachute open. It looked all right, so I assumed someone got out ok. There was no explosion or smoke.”

Henry Simpson, who was at the event and also witnessed the crash, said: “I saw two aircraft collide and large chunks of metal falling from the aircraft.

“One of them then entered a dive before crashing into the ground behind some trees, the pilot did parachute to safety and the other plane landed safely.”

Jason Warden, from Leicestershire, said the Douglas Skyraider, which appeared not to see the mustang and “turned in too tightly hitting the mustang”.

“A chunk of wing fell from the Skyraider which was quickly brought back under control.”

He said people saw a chute open just before the aircraft hit the ground.

Alistair Barbour, from Surrey, took the above photograph minutes before the crash.

He said: “Two Mustangs and a Skyraider were in a three ship formation when the lead Mustang ‘Beautiful Doll’ collided with the wing of the much larger Skyraider. Parts fell to the ground over the airfield from both aircraft.

“The Skyraider lost some control but recovered after losing height, However, the pilot of ‘Beautiful Doll’ could only do his best to ditch his aircraft safely in a field adjacent to Duxford while bailing out a couple of seconds before impact.”

if they were only at a hundred feet or so....that is not much time to make a decision to ride it out or bail. AND if they were only that high its a wonder the chute was able to get the pilot down safely.

KAV 07-10-2011 10:35 PM

Me and McQ59 witnessed this tragic loss up close. It all happened at the second pass of the Balbo.
BBD were in the lead of triangel with another Mustang to its right and a Skyraider to its left. fter making a low pass over the airfield, they started climbing, banking left when it appeard to be a collision between the two. Debrie fell to the ground and the Skyraider had a sudden dtop of altitude but regained control. The Mustang wobbled further upwards when suddenly the pilot bailed and the parachute unfolded at very low level. The Kyraider regurned to land with a damged wing (McQ got pics) while the other Mustang circled around crash/impactsite. A tragic loss of aviation history. But luckily no loss of life and the Skyraider made it safe back.

FOZ_1983 07-11-2011 12:19 AM

I wasn't their and really have no right to voice my opinions or views on this particular accident but i will anyway.....

I think the P51 pilot made a quick choice their and then on the spot to bail out... and it was the right one. He valued his life more than the aircraft.

I do think though, had he of known the damage was minimal and he'd of used the split second to recover rather than jump, then he would of landed the P51 (all be it a little damaged) and todays outcome would of been different.

Had we been in that situation... what would we of done? I to would of probably bailed out.

But i have to agree Winny...... what was the Skyraider looking at!! He was following the P51, should of always had him in sight yet clearly didnt!! He's lucky their wasnt a fatality.

Kudos to the P51 pilot though for getting out in one piece. He's now part of a rare club who can say they've jumped out of a damaged P51. I bet he knows how the Vets felt now.

No, everything was still on the plane, it just took a heavy whack up the arse. Unfortunatly looking at a Mustang cross section picture, that is right were the rudder and elevator cables travel on their way to the tail. Looking at the damage these cables would certainly been effected if not jammed completely. No way you could recover a spin. Quick thinking saved his life.

Inclined to agree, he was too low to try and make an assessment regards the possibilty of recovering and landing - right decision to bale in my opinion - someones life is worth more than any ac.

Exactly. It's like those moments in BoP when your tail gets slaughtered, making it hard to turn. Only he needs a new set of underwear and a bar of soap for his mouth :P

My Dad spoke to the Paramedic who attended, he works with him, and he was "shaken and hopping mad, wanting to know who hit him". Glad he's okay.

Robotic Pope 07-11-2011 04:17 PM

In Birds of Prey both aircraft would have exploded instantly :P

bobbysocks 07-11-2011 05:11 PM

great pics irish! that second video is better.....what a crumpled pile of aluminum that used to be a sweet ac. :(

P-51 07-11-2011 05:44 PM

With any luck the camera in the cockpit (I remember the DVD was supposed to have cockpit footage) will have survived and we can all S**t ourselves as the ground gets closer.

Put full screen and 720p on for this vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmsJW0-6JB0

Edit: Just spoke to my Dad in person after this mornings text confirming the pilot was fine. The reports on the news are wrong, he did not break an arm and did only suffer minor abrasions to both forearms. He was found inspecting the airframe with tears in his eyes (it was his, 3 months previous), wanted to know who had hit him and wanted to get back to the ATC tower as his daughter was there.

One lucky guy. That's it from me on this subject - I think I've posted enough about it :p

It is amazing that the wing structure of the skyraider gave way and not the fuselage of the P-51.

Small bird usually can still fly with one wing and a half, (check this is extreme footage, obviously the weight/engine power of this bird is pretty different from a p51 http://youtu.be/2lJy1idHwCc ) but, if elevator got damaged or broken, plane is useless... Maybe the impact under the p51 fusolage damaged badly the elevator/rudder controls and the pilot had no choice to bail. Maybe.

Gilly 07-12-2011 09:46 AM

From the unofficial reports I've heard the 51 pilot had literally no control surfaces after the bang and did wonder if he'd lost the rear part of the fuselage.

Gilly 07-12-2011 09:53 AM

Can I just say a big thanks to all attendees that yet again made this one hell of a weekend:

Give her a kiss gents. She was a gal' with an attitude!

http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/...ord2011217.jpg

It's so sad she's lost. The good news was that the pilot bailed to safety and could walk away unharmed. Propably well shaken & stirred but alive after all...
I got a few more pics of her and will post as I get it all sorted&organised.
And as we all know miracles do happen... May we all see her airborn again!

Great thanks to the UK-gents, Dave, Jack, Gilly, and Roy w/daughter. Very good to see you again guys
