While waiting for US release, Rise of Flight's core-game is now free.

A friendly heads up regarding some really good news for the flight sim community which came out yesterday with the release of Rise of Flight's V1.019 patch. Especially for those champing at the bit for Cliffs of Dover to be released in the US and those waiting for performance and gameplay issues to be addressed.

777 Studios have made the current version of RoF free to play, with unlimited demo access to all game modes - including the new RB3D-style dynamic career system, plus the Spad XIII and Albatros DV as flyable. All AI allies and opponents are available. Gunner positions are also available free. The devs hope you'll download the demo, like it and stick around to buy some of the addon aircraft, thus fuelling further addons and development.

Pretty generous of them, and looks set to provide plenty more bums in seats for the online crowd. Even for offline, there's a lot to be had from all this without paying a cent. The Spad is arguably the best aircraft in the sim - the P-47 of it's day, while the DV is as ubiquitous as the 109 would one day be.

If you haven't got into it already but don't mind the sort of combat that is so close, you'll be picking bits of your opponents out of your teeth, you could do a lot worse than to go over the the Rise of Flight website and grab yourself a free copy of the core game with 777 Studio's compliments.

Bah! Only downloaded the previous demo a couple of days ago - have to do it all again...

Seriously though, this looks like a generous offer, and an interesting marketing technique - probably learned it from the dodgy-looking guy on the street corner. You know, 'have this free on me' and when you are addicted and need another fix, you have to start paying (though fortunately, not quite as much...). Definitely worth a look.

Great news, downloading!

Fantastic game and fantastic sim!

Tried it last year- ran poor on my C2D 2.66, this version is prettier and smoother.
Flight modeling is trully on a different level to IL2 and CoD. Planes even groundloop!

A MUST!!!

If only I had a computer to run it :(

really enjoying it finding it harder than IL2 now considering buying planes for F2P just seem so expensive.

Finding the pilot work load harder than Il2 shame I can only run on min textures

Ah , I Itried the Demo some time ago (I had a much crapier gfx-card then), and only played around a bit, then gone on vacation and demo time ran out

If I only could fathom the view system this time

Wow! Nice little gift to trip over while browsing the forums. Thanks for posting this! :)

Thanks, I tired it too (even online) and I find it interesting.

Does it mean, if I manually buy all the additional planes available, I will have the same game like others bought before in stores?

It would be around 100€ though, which I find quite expensive.

...And rotary engines are for people who enjoy flying sideways.

How to turn left in a Fokker Dr 1, part 1:

(a) Roll to the left, pull back stick.
(b) Recover from spin.
(c) Apply full left rudder, roll left, pull back stick.
(d) Recover from spin.
(e) Apply full left rudder, roll left, push stick forwards.
(f) Attempt to aim while turning.
(g) Recover from spin.
(h) Turn right instead, and hope to get a passing shot in as you circle in the opposite direction to the ruddy Camel jockey you are engaging. Miss.
(i) In a flash of inspiration, realise that if you fly inverted, you can circle to the left while turning right.
(j) Recover from inverted spin.
(k) Look for Camel jockey, and realise he's heading home, unable to shoot properly while having fits of laughter.
(l) Turn (right) for home. Land. Groundloop, write off Dr 1.
(m) Select Albatross, Pfalz, or anything else you can find with a black cross on the side, and an engine that doesn't have the propeller bolted to the crankcase - or failing that, volunteer for submarines, subterranean tunnel-digging, or anything else not remotely connected with aviation.

I agree with all this except item k. The Camel jockey would have long since spun in trying to avoid your first burst of fire or even lost it while trying to cock his guns.
