Make a posting about your skins or skin requests for now we will use Sticky thread. If we get enough action on the thread we will create sub-forum.

Thanks

I'd love to know the answer to this question too.

BigPickle 06-02-2011 10:11 AM

well I've just copied and pasted from a skin so I'll try to knock up a rought outline template for 109E3 at least.

Lololopoulos 06-02-2011 10:56 AM

speaking of actions, i want to see some of that from the devs.

Ali Fish 06-02-2011 11:32 AM

ok ive made a spitfire mkIIa template. would folks care to give some feedback. i have included

Optional weathering layer. (made from original weathering layer by 1c)(Use so plane is not brand new with 0% weathering) use ingame weathering thereafter.
Optional overlay layer (the overlay that exists in game)
Optional Details layer (rivetts & panels)
2 custom skins. marine & recon

If you like em i can bust all of them out in a day.

If we get a sub forum. ill upload all plane sets to the one post.

most of my screenshots ive flung aroound have used this.

Titled:IL2_COD_SPITFIRE_MKIIA_SKIN_TEMPLATE_v1

the file produced this and this. BUT there is some ingame weathering settings going on !.
Permission is required to use this on non 1c websites.

I hope that doesn't sound like an ad :)

Airwarfare is an M4T sister site, many of you may be familiar with us.

BigPickle 06-02-2011 11:59 AM

yeah ali nice mate, keep em coming the templates for aircraft are very welcome, are they in PSD format so we can use the layers?

Ali Fish 06-02-2011 12:07 PM

test the "psd" file, make a skin, or add what you already made on the "paint here" layer, dont unlock the special layers! post a screeny, if there nice and your feedback is good. i will make a specific post so there all in 1 place.

smink1701 06-02-2011 02:00 PM

Luthier...make it possible to use skins in QMB. In fact, bring all the features, options and settings from IL2 into CLOD.:)

Question- I can load skins & they show up when I have "Your Plane "screen up but they don't show up when I "FLY",regardless of them being built in with game or new 3rd party ones .All patched up to newest hotfix...What's going on?Want to use some of this great new work

corsairoz 06-02-2011 04:58 PM

I too would really appreciate a simple summory of the use of skins in CoD. I can create them, I can see where to put them (I think) but I cannot for the life of me access any in game.

I suspect its me simply missing something obvious OR COD does not support skins as yet. In game every aircraft seems to only have the DEFAULT paint option....

Thanks

C

Ali Fish 06-02-2011 05:16 PM

ok the changing of the skin in game presently involves you having to incorporate your skin via the FMB (Full Mission Builder) section. and building it into the mission.

you can only view skins in the game environment via a mission designed to use that skin. the ingame selection routines do not work yet !.

The skin file you create "must" go in the corresponding plane type folder thats within your documents/1csoftclub/paint schemes/ "plane type" folder. (not the game directories)

when in the FMB and having put your skin in the proper folder for usage. you should see in the skin drop down the new painted skin with whatever title you have given it.

you can also view your skin on the model in the quick mission /quick plane selection arena. but this will "not" activate it ingame untill 1C develop it to work like that. (eventually)

1. create skin
2. put skin in relevant folder (1csoftclub)
3. create mission in FMB & assign skin to plane object via drop down menu.
4. launch mission
5. take picture, enjoy skin.
6. thank ali for enlightening information (optional)

lol

BigPickle 06-02-2011 07:03 PM

A man of many talents Ali thanks mate :)

Ali Fish 06-02-2011 07:57 PM

Bf109-E3 template by myself. much like the mkIIa spitfire. bit more simplified.

Optional Weathering & panel lines over your custom skin from the start !
Optional painting area mask including non paintable details.

http://www.mediafire.com/?9bz4dzpd16dcgd1

top is new , bottom is old. a bit more default weathering and sublte hints of panel lines. both pictures same time same location same skin & both with zero% weathering. !

Great work, Ali. May I ask if you could upload a templane with weathering and panel lines in two different layers? Would be cool!

Nice work from Cpt_Farrel;

I tend to believe the "mix theory" as aviation paint is a complicated matter and I don't think it is likely that any old paint would be used on fighter aircraft. That's a very simplified statement but I'm hungry and it will have to do for now :)

http://www.cptfarrels.com/Prevs/1106...Blume_JG26.jpg
White-13 flown by Walther Blume has been photographed in color. At first it seemed to be painted in RLM02/71 but when compared to the RLM02 visible on the enginbearers and a Klemm trainingaircraft in the background it's obviously not RLM02 but possibly a mix of RLM02 and RLM65.

http://www.cptfarrels.com/Prevs/1106...lland_JG26.jpg
I used similar mixes for Gallands very intersting mottled camo...

http://www.cptfarrels.com/Prevs/1106...Perez_JG26.jpg
Horst Perez' aircraft is also known to have been grey, it has been confirmed when the aircraft was restored that it was painted in greys but it's not RLM74/75 which wasn't used on a wide scale at the time. (It did exist in small quantities for trials though, all according to Ken Merrick)

It's quite tricky to work with JPG's and the way the engine illuminates the skins. I keep adjusting little things but it's time to share! :)

Very nice but it would be better if we can download them.

LcSummers 06-03-2011 01:37 PM

Cant wait to see "many" skins for the E-4 version. Wick, Galland, Möldersetc. There are so many talented skinners out there.

Sadly i am not one of them.

Hopefully dev team will patch skin selection problem. Its to sad not using them.

Keep up skinnig for all airplanes.

Thanks BP (not British Petrol)

there is colour replacement via the adjustments rollout, but you really want to lay down stuff yourself, its very haphazard using photoshop tools like that. regards the time. its the quality that matters imo. take the time its worth it.

I know it was for that movie but anyway.

Ali Fish 06-03-2011 04:49 PM

nice skin bigpickle.

see you got the layer fixed :) bit heavy on the panels imo. its a shame the developers mixed the panel & rivett information with the exhaust weathering. if i get inspiration i might re make them both.

btw another technique i sometimes use is to bake light over the main skin. adding that panel & rivett information into an alpha channel then using render/lighting effects with the alpha channel selected under the lighting settings with a directional light produces more light and shadowing associated in a pseudo bump map for the panels effect over the main diffuse. its quite good for simulating the fact that the physical information is heavily painted over on these planes in RL. as opposed to an actuall physically painted panel line or rivett. becuse for example. what you actually see is 2 panels meeting not a line between them. simulating the shadow and highlight of the 2 panels meeting is more correct imo. but maybe i take that too far lol..

BigPickle 06-03-2011 05:55 PM

haha no thats awesome mate, I try as often as I can to go onto simmers paintshop and read up on there tutes but its just having the time with kids and all.

41Sqn_Stormcrow 06-04-2011 11:25 AM

I would like to know the opinions of the seasoned skin artists here.

I was looking more closely into the rivets of the 109 and as they are currently set they seem to be only on one side of a panel line. Shouldn't they rather be on both sides as the kept the panels inplace?

Ali Fish 06-04-2011 12:24 PM

if its realistic it possibley points to the construction of the panels. possibly the panels are layered to reduce weight and just use minimum amount of rivetts ?

Great question though !

edit, found this image which supports the single lines of rivetts. the rear sections covering could be thicker, maybe have tongue & groove system etc. i say its realistic given same is seen on this image.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...AS-detail2.jpg

41Sqn_Stormcrow 06-04-2011 01:57 PM

They would then have to be overlapping, the panel edges I mean. And then how to produce a smooth outer surface. Or one end is thicker and receives the other edge in a specifically carved reception. But wouldn't this be even more heavy? The only interest I would see in reducing the time used for setting the rivets.

41Sqn_Stormcrow 06-04-2011 04:11 PM

Mh. I've searched a bit via google. Perhaps finally the skinner at MG are right after all. I found an image depicting a reconstruction of a 109G and it doesn't show the rivets and hardly the panel lines.

Please go to "Die neuesten Fotos" (see link list on the left).

The scroll down till you see the fotos of April 2011 and then click on the fotos where you have a medium close up of the back fuselage of the 109 G10

http://www.messerschmitt-bf109.de/

Of course with usage and dirt collecting they (the pannel lines) will perhaps get more visible like one can see on some old photographs. I never saw a historic foto with rivets clearly sticking out (they were anyhow sunk in the metal sheets).

Very detailled fotos of quite a rugged 109:

Buzpilot 06-08-2011 12:56 PM

How do i paint the front of engine nacelles? It's a missing part in paintscheme.
Edit; Some of the grey turn pinkish too.
http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...heimIVGrey.jpg

Shado 06-08-2011 01:50 PM

Hi Buzpilot are you aware that there are several layers to Cod skins?.

I can only assume that the Nacelles live on another layer other than the one you have painted, i havent looked at the Blenheim yet.

You might want to do a flood filled test skin if you havent already to see if the nacelles change colour at least that way you will know they dont live on that layer.

Theyre like onions mate :)

Does that make sense? a lot of the time I dont, so the missus says :)

Buzpilot 06-08-2011 07:01 PM

They are in a different file, M-overlay0.
How do i put this into skin?

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...M-overlay0.jpg

kristorf 06-08-2011 07:56 PM

They well might be hard coded as they are part of the mechanical layer, making it impossible to paint them

Shado 06-09-2011 08:36 AM

So without wanting to state the obvious the only way around it at the moment would be extract, edit then re-inject it back into the file or files it originated from.......

I doubt that will be allowed.
One thing is to extract to get templates, totally different to mess with originals.
And probably risk getting banned online.

I finally reworked the "Priller-skin" and added my part of shading and lighting to the wings and the fuslage. So this is version 1 of this attempt to make a somewhat historically skin.

Actually I didn´t either. And I acutally just used this reference (posted a little above) for testing my 109 template. Anyhow, I have not the background and nor time and will to check for 100% historically accuracy. As long as it is not totally fantasy (and even that didn´t stop me so far as this are our squad skins- dark, squad skins by day , historically, a little historically and fantasy) I just used for skinning what I thought looked good. Honestly I found the reference posted above for the Priller skin rather boring, but I had all perspectives on the scheme available and it was easy for testing, so I used that. ;)

I started working on this one, but had no time/will to finish it. I will post it when it`s done, but it is not really historically I think, but it looks nice. ;)

SNAFU 09-11-2011 12:18 PM

Sven 09-27-2011 08:50 PM

Very good work skinners! My paintschemes folder is getting quite big!

But I'd like it to be a bit bigger, in other words, I'd like to request a skin :-P

A friend of mine really wants 2 skins for a Ju-88.

These to be exact:

http://i51.tinypic.com/2mqugxd.png

A KG54 'Totenkopf' day and night skin.

Cliffs of Dover already has the marking correct and the 'Totenkopf' itself, so you'd only have to do the 'clean' skin but preferably with the Swastika for Historical accuracy.

Thanks in advance,

Homuth.

Blackdog_kt 09-27-2011 11:12 PM

Are the markings painted over with black paint on the second example, possibly to ensure lower visibility in a night intruder role? Quite interesting if so.

Sven 09-27-2011 11:19 PM

It does seem so in this drawing, I don't know how correct it is, but the author must have put some investigation in it :)

SNAFU 09-28-2011 07:20 AM

A little bit OT, but maybe you are not aware of that usually the swastikas are painted over on pictures hosted by German sides/servers etc, due to the fact that it is a criminal offence in Germany to publish, show or distribute something with the symbol on it. So maybe the picture was simply provided by German artist. ;)

Some administration in Berlin even dragged a shopkeeper infront of court, because he sold stickers with a double crossed swastika, here a symbol associated with AntiFa or left minded youth, or which shall simply express the dislike of any nationalism.

There are no skins at all in that folder by default on my install.

Is everyone copying all their skins to there, or is the game installing oddly/faultily for some? If it is like this for more than a few of us then I'd say it is a major fault.

I take it that I will need to copy any downloaded skins, and any skins that come in any update to this location.

Yes, I understand that. I understand that they are in the wrong place. I am wondering why, and if it is that way for everyone.

I downloaded a few skins today, fantastic work by the community! If I had photoshop on my new machine I'd try making some of my own, I don't get on with GIMP at all.

Skin request: E1 (III/JG 52)

Hi,

would someone kind enough to make me this skin?
I'd do it myself but I am unfortunately a noob in skinning. :(

The one with the red nose!

Thanks in advance (if someone wants to do it)

@ khaAk

Working on it... ;)

*Edit*

A fair amount of work to do yet, but this is where she stands at the moment (2nd one down).
As you can see, there are many variations out there.. I chose the one that you gave, but used brown and green for the base colours.

Nice Work

The difficult part of the skin, the strip

I have here an alternatively image (from Wikipedia)
Do not know whether this is historically correct, but still a skin

http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...20070317111950

Here are the airplane color (from the engine towards the rear)
Very nice to strip the dark purple hamoniert especially with the green.

However, the stripes are painted very badly. :(

The (dark) green Plane also look very nice! (Screen two 4 Plane)

To paint many thanks for your time this Skin  :D

JG26_EZ 08-10-2012 09:14 PM

Here it is.. take a look and let me know what you think..
Those damn stripes are quite hard to work with around the 3d objects on the fuselage.

Enjoy..

The little things that bother me.
Blue: High (Strong shifts.)
Orange/Green: Medium (Some strips are too short.)

Otherwise Very well done!

I have a Question:
How can they save in lossless JPG?
you are converting it first to (PNG, BMP, TGA?)

JG26_EZ 08-11-2012 09:30 AM

I use PSP9. When I attempt to save as a JPEG, it gives 3 different options. Saving as lossless is one of those options.

The orange stripes, indicating that my stripes are too long..
- the reason they have been shortened a bit, is to smooth the transition from sides to bottom.

The green stripes, indicating my stripes are too long..
- I tapered those off because it looked better (to me) to have the lines end, opposed to slipping under the paint of the wing.

The paint near engine was very tricky. The stripes are forced to bend when it appears on the aircraft.

The tail... I see that I should have left the area under the wing blank.

I will slowly try to edit it these problems, but can't make any promises.

khaAk 08-11-2012 04:15 PM

On the wings you can simply bring the colors closer to the fuselage?
Then the effect would be gone as well.

On the exhaust / air intake can it (if it does not work) omit complete and easily
adapt to the background color (gray-blue)

Hi Guys
Here are My fully Layered Templates which
include Paint, Lines & Rivets,Internal Elements [some 3D], Weathered & Markings etc.
They should be fully compatible with Photoshop and Gimp.
You will need Winrar[Free] or WinZip to extract these files.
Fell free to use as you wish and any acknowledgement would be appreciated.
Regards
Keith;-)
