New Prop is Perfect!!!

Thanks Luthier and Team.

Ok, I'll be honest here. I read the notice that the propellers have been "corrected" to be more visible, and I cringed inside. I was one of the guys congratulating Luthier and co. for giving us a more correctly invisible prop disc, because what we had ingame was much closer to real life than the incessantly flickering prop effect in IL-2 1946. I always disliked the prop discs in '46, so I expected to hate what I saw when I started the game just now. I was mentally composing a plea to give us optional propeller effects as I started a mission.

I like it!

The devs have corrected 1946's most irritating visual flaw, and the propeller still looks like a barely visible smooth disc at high RPM. Just like real life. No longer do we have those ridiculous alternating bands of light and dark revolving around forever and ever. But at low RPM, the prop's rotation becomes visible and seems to flicker a little bit. Just like real life.

And the visuals at 1/16 time are seriously cool.

If I were going to nitpick, I'd say the prop's rotation becomes easily visible at too high RPM still... but that's a small and easily forgiven flaw.

Luthier and friends, I apologize for doubting your approach to this. I was wrong. You obviously know what you're doing. Keep it up.

no the prop does not look right to me. it will spaz in and out even though the rpm's are constant. i expected to see a constant disc shape that is pleasant to look at like in IL 1946.

Same here.

Also, every couple of seconds or so it looks as if the animation freezes briefly then continues.

its not really the animation freezing. it is more like the animation (the soothing constant disc rotation) never really gets going. at high rpm's and it just tries to by sazzing out.

Are you sure it's not reflected light? That's what I've been seeing at high rpms when cruising.

If you guys in real life could go back in time and really take part in this you'd probably tell your ground crew that it isn't like the game. Hehe

+1 White Owl
Seems more realistic to me, I spend 6 hours a fortnight in a piper Navajo with work and imo its the best we have had yet.

Yes the props in RL are not very visible and the props in 46 is funny.. RL is not through a movie effect.

Please do not say "we" want a classic IL2 prop.....say "you" want one because I definitely want the real life look, not some hollywood or through the camera lens look.... and yes, I do know what they look like in real life as I have flown real planes.
BTW.... don't take this as a nasty comment as it is not meant as such :)

If you dont have vsync on try with it, i got terrible prop without vsync.

justme262 05-21-2011 06:40 AM

But my prop is COMPLETELY invisible when the prop passes in front of a cloud.

Also the whole screen flashes like a strobe when I fly into a cloud and it seems to be in time with engine RPM.

*Tommy opens hatch to cellar to check that Hell hasn't frozen over* Smink made a positive thread with no buts' or anything! ;)

when i saw it the 1st thing i thought was, thank God i'm not epileptic, the flickering is not very pleasant to look at. I'm sure soon i wont notice it. If it is now more realistic that's cool, but i don't see what all the fuss is about. The change is so small to me.

I tend to agree

this kind of thing will only happen if the viewer "flicks" his eyes in the same direction of the spin and catches a really quick view of the prop (spinning wheel spoke, coolong fan etc)
atm it, in sim, comes across as an irritation though at low rpm it looks okay
