What would be the best budget card for CoD
I'm looking for a good budget card to play CoD.
I have a Core 2 quad 3Ghz cpu and 4G ram. But no graph :) onboard 1G shared and when I start CoD it just force shut down almost crashing my machine. what if I say GeForce GTS 450 D5 1G? any other smart recommendation within price range? Thanks |

Well for $300 (AUD ) you can get a 2GB 560ti , this is 1/4 of the price you would have paid for an 8800GTX back in the day. And it is 2x faster.
|
While we're on the subject of GPU's (hope you don't mind wannabe), what sort of card would trump my 8800GTS for under £80gbp? I'm beginning a build now, will be using 8800 temporarily.
Pref ATi. |
I'd try to find a used 470/480 from someone upgrading to 5xx.

Salute
Best card for the money is the ATI 6950, it has 2 gig's of VRAAM, something which CoD really benefits from, it can be overclocked to 6970 performance quite easily and is not an expensive investment at $239.00. http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...i+6950&x=0&y=0 |

And here's the hierarchy as of 20/4 http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-g...w-32170-7.html |
Any HD6850, very good $/FPS ratio.:) Or a 460 GTS, whichever is cheaper. If you like to go a step cheaper then I recommend the HD5770. Remember guys, he wants a BUDGET card.;)

5770 is a good card though go for the Sapphire range as it has better cooling and fan..very very clockable and can handle increased volts easily..in fact it comes in the top 3 of cards available to best handle those 2 things
it is however £120ish so if your willing to put another £70 your get a card thats twice as powerful and beats the HD6950 hands down GTX 560TI twin FrozR..forget about the whole 2gig/1gig thing..its doesnt always matter.. ive recently read a magazine that benchmarked 20 GFX cards on 3 different resolutions on 3 diff games.. ARMA2 Call Of Duty Battlefield2 GTX560Ti came in top 3 of all cards listed and had 20% increase over the 6950 and its only £190 that would be my card if i was to upgrade now Product Specification Memory: 1024 MB GDDR5 Core Clock: 880 MHz Shader Clock: 1760 MHz Memory Clock: 4200 MHz Memory Interface: 256 bit Processor Streams: 384 DirectX 11 Support NVIDIA SLI Support NVIDIA CUDA Technology NVIDIA PhysX Ready NVIDIA PureVideo HD NVIDIA 3D Vision Overclocked Performance MSI Twin Frozr II Thermal Design MSI Afterburner Overclocking Utility Military Class II Components MSI Solid Capacitor Graphics Card |

Buying a card which will not run CoD properly is not going to be a good investment. You are better to wait, save a bit more money, and then buy something which is a better quality. If you buy a card which is not high enough quality, you will be disappointed. Personally I would not recommend anything less than: GTX-460, GTX-560ti 2 gig, ATI 6870, ATI 6950 2 gig. Of these, in my opinion, the two best options are the GTX-560Ti 2 gig, or the ATI 6950 2 gig. Both of these cards have 2048 mb of VRAAM, something which the game really hogs, and this will deliver extremely good performance for CoD players at higher resolutions. The 6950 is in my opinion the slightly better choice, being a little cheaper, ($239 vs $279) and easier to overclock. There is one other option: If you have a motherboard which is SLI or Crossfire capable, then you could match up your existing video card with another of the same type. Remember however, that SLI and Crossfire are not yet enabled for the game, but are expected in the near future. Luthier has said Crossfire will be enabled within approx. a month, and SLI will arrive sometime after the next Nvidia driver set is released. So if you can wait... BUT this is only worthwhile if your existing card is at least (a) DX-10 capable, and (b) sufficiently modern to meet the requirements of the game. For example, if you already have an ATI 5770, a pair of ATI 5770's would run the game extremely well. And this upgrade would only cost you $139. |
Interesting, I have a 5770, might go for another one, still waiting for more reviews concerning crossfire performance.

BUT, if the game is well optimized for Crossfire, you would get a big boost at a small cost by adding the second 5770. If you want to upgrade right now, or don't trust 1C to give good Crossfire performance in CoD, (dual cards were a problem in IL-2 for a long time) then you are better to pick up a single card which has 2048 mb of VRAAM built in. EDIT: The latest patch 'enabled' Crossfire, but it is not working well at all, will need a lot more work. So WAIT!! ;) |
My two choices were GTX-560Ti 2 gig, or the ATI 6950 2GB.
I only got the Ati purely out of availability. Runs it well , I haven't overclocked it yet. Will you get much of a boost? |
Most def the 6950 2gb or the 560Ti...
Best of all worlds, value and horsepower... I am getting the 6950 2gb next month... Tough to choose between them. I have a new AMD Mobo so I decided to go the ATI route because it is a better fit for the system I have. I would suggest get the 560ti if you have an intel set up, and Ati if you have a AMD set up. But def one of those 2 cards - The 560 is NOT 20% faster than the 6950, in fact the 6950 is slightly faster across all tested games than the 560. But there is really nothing much between the two. |
Seems 2GB of VRAM is more or less a neccesity in this game as of current patch if you want to run on high settings without problems.
Someone mentioned running all maxed out and CloD took something like 1,7GB. |

How to and specs is here: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...ng/vidcard/159 Remember to think carefully about what you are doing and decide if you want to take the risk of overclocking. In many instances users can get a lot more performance for minimal risk. But if you take it too far, and your card overheats, you could end up with an expensive desk ornament. |
ATI cards don't seem to be running at full clock and as of yet there's been no explanation that I'm aware of. My 5770 runs something like Call of Pripyat at 850 core clock, and CloD never goes above 400.
Until/if this is fixed, I'd go with Nvidia. |
Nobody has said anything about power supply yet. The fact that his pc currently has only onboard graphics means its probably a store bought PC with a weak PSU.
To the OP, if this is true then you will have to add the cost of a new PSU to the price of any of the graphics cards that have been mentioned here. The ATI 5670 is probably the best you can get without upgrading the PSU, but then that probably isn't a fast enough card for Cliffs. |
