Wiki Project Idea

Hey all,

I had what I think is a decent idea (and I'm sure not the first that thought of it) that we as a community could all get involved in.

Popular games without a strong wiki are kind of rare these days and I've noticed Cliff of Dover has almost nothing in the main Wikipedia site or on other more game oriented wiki sites.

To me it seems even more important for a flight sim to have strong documentation behind it and since the devs are better at making the games and less at the documents backing them, then maybe we should pick up the slack ;).

You could have sections on each plane that include the history of the plane, statistics, version differences, etc and then how to use the plane in game, tactics, start-up procedure etc.

Same would be true for the weapons used as well as providing info on using the conf.ini, joystick set up etc. Information on ACM would be great as well.

If we could do this it would be a great resource for newcomers and even for veterans who decide to fly a new plane or modify some ini files.

My hope is actually that if this resource becomes the de facto place to get information perhaps Luthier and team could integrate the website into the game itself and we'd reclaim our lost plane/vehicle info window plus so much more.

What do you guys think?

Great idea, however I feel the majority of the older IL2 community will be in the dark when it comes to this

manfromx 04-20-2011 07:25 PM

I'm thinking the same

If I have time once the school year ends maybe I'll try and get the framework for something set up.

There are many sites out there that allow hosting of wiki's so it's really just down to permissions and organization.

I do Wiki for another game site.

Will do for this one.

But with so many players, it will careful control.

manfromx 04-20-2011 10:02 PM

Agreed, it will take good moderators.

If you do put one up let us know :).

If not I'll go ahead if no one else does

If someone is going to do this then I would suggest posting article or page requests on this forum. People will probably contribute on an ad hoc basis if the subject interests them.

We have a wiki setup and ready to go at airwarfare
Airwarfare: Storm Of War Wiki
I'll be happy to set up volunteers into a group that can moderate and add content.

Both of those look promising. Though unless there is an English version for the Russian site one I doubt I'd use it much. Though both versions could bounce off each other for ideas.

The Airwarfare one is cool because it's got a news, downloads etc. How long have you guys been up?

My only concern is the possibility of something like IL2skins.com happening where a great resource gets neglected or shut down.

Having the wiki on a separate site (like wikia.com or similar) has some benefits as administration can be passed around as people fall in and out of time/commitment.

Though if the information is backed up you could always transplant it should the worst happen.

What do you guys think?

I've been supporting IL-2 since it first appeared through various websites Mudmovers 2000-2003 until the domain name was stolen :( then Airwarfare which has been around since 2004, it's content was moved to mission4today.com which has been running 5 years. They reside on the same server and share resources, we certainly won't be another il2skins we are here to stay :)

Have to login to view the wiki?

Gamekeeper 04-26-2011 01:44 PM

No, anyone can view the wiki. There isn't any content yet as the game is still new and we need to know what all the available features will be and how they will work when the sim is more functionally complete. For example the Quick missions feature is in flux and has already changed considerably since release.

manfromx 04-26-2011 03:47 PM

I'm convinced :)

I'll try and draw up a basic site layout soon if one isn't planned. Though initially we could start building the web pages for each plane. I like the Sukhoi wiki where they showed the BF110 cockpit and labelled everything. We should do similar with in-game screenshots.

Other things to add would be start up procedure, best settings for take-off/landing/cruising/top speed, history, and so on.

I fear the best use I can be is mostly game configuration related and technical support. I'll leave performance and specs to the people who are sitting on good resources.

Gamekeeper 04-26-2011 05:16 PM

M4T member Corsican_Corsair has got cockpit info on almost all the cockpits used in IL-2 1946, he did the cockpit guide it will provide a good starting point.

There is a new forum for wiki discussion, there will be a wiki editors group created who will moderate the forum and have access to editing the wiki, please apply within or by private message.

ManfromX or anyone who may build one. I just recently found World of Tanks thanks to someone on this site and it has a Wiki that i think is built very well for a Free to play game. Much more user friendly then the standard style used by most MMO's these days IMO. :) I think something in this type of format would work very well for this type of game. Check it out.

(Disclaimer) I am in no way shape or form connected to the World of Tanks game what so ever. I am not being paid to advertise there wiki or there game and i am just a guy who thinks that there type of wiki page would work well for IL2 COD as well. :) sorry if this breaks the rules please delete it if it does.

I played World of Tanks as well (fun little game).

That is a nice wiki and some good ideas are there for sure. Notably using icons for the hyperlinks. Would make sense to do something similar for planes if we can.

Hopefully we can get some content up soon so we can start organizing and fleshing out the flow of the wiki.
