which ammo to saw off wings and blow up fighters

hey guys.i wonder which ammo i should use in my bf, to saw off wings and get spits and hurries to explode.with my current bullets, i only make a lot of wholes into them.sometimes they begin to smoke.most of the times i think i kill the pilots.when i shoot at beaufighters, they mostly catch up fire near the engines.but spits and hurries just look like swiss cheese after i shot all my ammo at them.i played now 60hours this game but only managed once to detach a wing from a hurrie and i think twice to explode a beaufighter.what are your experiences?

Blew one wing off as well in my time playing so far. I'm finding it very hard to shoot planes down. Especially the German planes, the RAF seem to be really weak the Luft super tough.

Is it me or there is NO high explosive rounds for the 20mm MgFF ?

Steuben 04-20-2011 10:50 AM

There are only one or two Brandsprenggranate in the current ammo setup for the Mgff i think. I tried to change it but no luck so far.

pupo162 04-20-2011 10:53 AM

20 mm in this game seem to have almost noone explosive power. .303 work better both in the 109 and in british planes. a well placed round in the engine and its over.

Im no expert but i would think the MGff/m would be better suited to blow off wings. The MGff in game has only incendiary ammo, sure one is explosive too but still its called Brandmunition (Brand= Burn). The Minengeschoss of MGff/m had much more explosive power. I dont have problems in game to set em on fire. But still im looking forward to seeing the effects of MGFF/m once we get a 109e4 :)
check here too: M Geschoss has a lot more explosive power.

yeah shooting seems to be much harder than in il2 1946.the 20mm cannons seem to have not the power i expected.now i use brandsprengranate as ammo for it.but its not really exploding when i hit my target.although you can see nice small blow ups in the sky when i miss.

Ive change all my ammo for the spitfire to incendries, and other hight impact ammo, but i still havnt seen one plane catch fire, the ammo is just like the default spitfire ammo, doesnt do anything:confused:

Weird, I see that all the time. Plus the fires that spread all over the planes. I actually seem to be able to shoot down more planes with E3 when using MG:s as I can not seem to hit with cannons that much.

In the spit I use a 50-50 mix of Dewilde and AP (4guns one, 4guns the other) and I find it very effective when my shooting is good. One problem I'm having is keeping the plane steady in the vertical plane on the gun run, that makes it real hard to get enough ammo on target.

Simple fact of the matter is that no matter what ammo you use 303's are just not very good at tearing up airplanes. The German 8mm on the other hand while still a rifle caliber gun has a substantially heavier bullet (not to mention a very nice selection of ammo) so is capable of doing much (or at least some) more damage if you can get enough bullets on target with just 2 guns. As for the 20's the Germans agreed with us that they weren't very effective, that's why they were so quick to convert the E3's to E4's the minute the Mine Shell guns were available.

I think we're just going to have to get used to not so spectacular action at the other end of our guns until we get better ones. (that won't be so long for the Lufties)

this is not quake you dont pretend to kill people online but to prove youre a better pilot

BadAim 04-20-2011 04:05 PM

Not me. I want to KILL KILL KILL! and by all of this killing prove I'm a better pilot. I'll be happiest when I first see a flaming pilot streaming his failed 'chute fly past my canopy.

How to change ammo anyway? I can change, save and click OK hundreds of times, but it will always stay with the default settings. Can't even load bombs because of this.

Well, the whole menu is a real bugfest... please fix it ASAP :D

Make sure you press save, and then "Okay" twice (including when you go back to the screen where you choose your fighter) You can't hit cancel there or it deletes everything...

make config
save it
Okay out of weapon screen
Okay out of airplane selection screen

No, this doesn't work for me. I cannot use the customized loadouts in quick mission.

I went to
option
plane
loadout
guns
changed the load out
saved it
ok
ok
quick mission
choose mission
switch to particular plane
cannot see the loadout I saved
also when changing custom loadout and saving it under this name it is not implemented when choosing custom loadout in quick mission. Sometimes I only can choose empty loadout in quick mission. It is porked.

The funny thing is, you have to save the ammo load-out twice in seperate screens. Only then you might have a chance to see the ammo load-out available. If it will work, that is a seperate matter.

Today, I shot a wing off of a Ju-87 in my Hurricane. I'm sorry I don't have a screeny, it happend too fast and I was too surprised to see it happening. So it is defenitly possible to do some serious structural damage in the game. It is only so much harder then in il-2 1946!!!

raaaid 04-20-2011 06:33 PM

me too thinks theres something buggy in the load out cant make it work:confused:

Mods please lock this thread until after I'm done with the RAF campaign.

Doc_uk 04-20-2011 08:03 PM

The only way to change ammo for most of us is to us the FMB
Ive said it before, and will say it again the whole ammo load-out section needs a complete re-working

Ahhh I see... I did a "save as" and named it "Default" and I am assuming overwrote the static default... The only reason I know it worked is because I changed my fuel load to get under the T/O weight. Low and behold I had 3/4 of a tank at take off instead of a full tank.

Overwriting default for me changed it for everything, Quick, Single, and Campaign.

I also made a save called Tyson but it doesn't show up as an option unless I do Multi-player.

The only way I can use my preferred weapons loadouts was to use FMB and edit missions to use my custom set. I tried overwriting the default set and naming my preferred loadout default but it didn't work for me. I will look at that again as that method would save a lot of hassle.

EDIT:

No need to use FMB, you can copy paste your saved weapons loadouts into any of the stock misssions using notepad - this works and straightforward to do.

Overwriting Default does not work.......I set up the Spit with Tracers, saved as default, deleted all other profiles, into a mission - no tracers.
