Cpu advice please
Hi guys, I'm on a budget. For SD vid editing and processing, and gaming, il2 cod, Ro2 at some point, r factor2, ROF, which will be better for 2/3 years:
I3 540 3.06ghz Or Athlon II X2 250 3.00ghz I notice the i3 does better on benchmark sites. Any advice before I shell out? |
ok well just so you know, don't expect to play il2 COD on either of those cpu's they are below minimum spec.
I would recommend you go out and get a second job and upgrade to an i7 2600k |

people overclocking them over 4Ghz on air. despite having an i7 myself, hypertheading is not really worth it. |
i5 2500K was $219 and with a $35 Air Cooler I OC'd it to 4.2 Gig by pressing one button on the MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard.. easiest overclock ever.. only way to make it easier would have been for MSI to actually press the button for me :)
I used this, its awesome, silent, and I could beat you to death with it :) You actually attach your motherboard to it, not the other way around.. but..can't hear the fan and its keeping my CPU under load REALLY cool.. like crazy cool.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185142 |
was thinking about the same thing myself, very tempted by the AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.20GHz Quad Core for £75
|
|
I can recommend only the i5-2500K. 4.9 GHz Primestable with air cooling.
Best bang for the buck! |
I'm using the Phenom II X4 955 BE overclocked to 4.0 on air.

Q6600 is a masterpiece. It is one of THE best processors ever released. Intel released it on a 775 set as they didn't have so much power over the market. Now they there planning to release 3 NEW LGA's and the year after they'l probably do 6... Its a joke... 775 lasted from Pentium 4 too the Q series. 1156 hasn't even lasted a year.

My i7 950 on twin fan Megahalems cooler is o/c to 4GHz and CoD is loading Core 1 to about 70% and around 85C (Max recommended by Intel is 73 but I won't worry below 90). I did have it at 4.2GHz but a 100% load Prime test rocketed it over 100C where I chickened out :) I don't know what the cores will be loaded like once CoD multicore has been optimised. |

Get the i3, you won't regret it. Compared to AMD counterpart that is.

THe video card is probably more important now than ever. The athlon is only 60 bucks and the i3 is about 120. |

After 3 hours Prime --> 75°C During CoD --> 50°C Idle --> 32°C As you can see, all clear! :D |

Thanks for the table, it really simplifies things. On oc UK there's a i3 system for 350. There's an i5 2500 for double at 706 - is it really worth that much more, when the i3 is easily OCd to 4ghz?
Thanks for responses so far. |

I set ProcessAffinityMask=15 (4 cores) and it runs 25-35% on some cores, less on others and all in mid-60C's over Water but I did see higher loads and temps over land. I'm astonished at how little CPU is used. What cooling are you using? |

I should say buy AMD

If you are on a budget, a little one, I should say look for a AMD with ATI graphic card they go well together. |

Well, i've pretty much settled on a 1055t/1090t X6 based system. Does anyone have any experience with those?
They seem great for price vs performance, and benchmark marks are high. |

Which mobo? |
Yes, probably a 1090t, as they're pretty close priced anyway. I'll start looking at mobo's tonight, although someone at the ubi boards (oldbuzzard) recommended ASrock. But I need one with firewire (for sd video transfer).

He's on budget and the AM3 socket reached the end of it's lifetime - there's no need to spend that much cash on a mobo which will be outdated in 8weeks. 2 the OP: AM3+ is due to arrive at the e3, you would probably need a bigger budget though, therefore AM3 is ok for another 12-18 Month, and you can still upgrade the CPU. Well, if you can wait a few weeks for the AM3+ mobos to arrive, pick one of those. They're downward compatible and accept AM3 cpus, which should see another drop in price. |

http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/AM3_PLUS_Ready/ he is already going for a chip that is $200 alone why not get a board that will increase the life of his rig? So he buys the X6 and 4gb of ram and a mid/hi range vid card and a good PSU and in 1 year when the bulldozer drops in price and he do an up grade (double the ram, crossfire and bulldozer) as opposed to buying a new rig.... :) |

Decisions, decisions! The i5 2500k really is appealing, but it would be a pain to the wallet - hmmm.

VS AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3=$140 THE 2500 is a great chip but if you buy one of the boards i have posted you will have more headroom...if you just look the system in my sig and replaced the MB with the one i posted you would be at about $550 AND be able to do some major upgrades in a year :)...as my system sits now i will be able to add another 5750 and an X6 in about 6-8 months for around $150-75 and get another year+ out of it . You can only "future proof" so much but a GOOD MB is key to this. S! |

Nobody knows what bulldozer is going to do. How long has AM3+ been out? 1155 socket is still going to work with Ivy Bridge( a 22nm version of sandy bridge) due out end of the year. |
|
Quote:
How long has LGA1156 been out? See, both manufactures screw us.;) Quote:

It's reading tea leaves atm. |
So what are the differences between the 1156 and 1155 boards, other than the not future proof issue for 1156? Is the 2500k miles ahead of the 760 say?

I am using a rig I bought and built from scratch a month ago..
Intel 2500K @ 4.2 Gig ($219) MSI P67A-GD65 (Has OUTSTANDING "Auto Overclocking" feature.. can't rave about it enough) ($179) 8 Gig Corsair Vengence DDR3 1600 ($99) WD Caviar 7400 RPM $49.00 Samsung DVD R $20 FXF 6970 2 Gig VRAM $350 Cooler Master HAF 932 Case $139 (Has LARGE fans that make almost no noise) RaidMax RX 850 AE PS $119 (I Heard mixed reviews about the "Maker" but have seen good reviews on this particular PS and hasen't had an issue) Scythe SCMG-2100 Sleeve CPU Cooler $39 Big.. I mean BIG! But almost silent and keeps my CPU at 38' under load so how can you argue? So if you are short of cash you could get the Mobo, CPU, RAM and a new Power SUpply for about $650 US (Assuming prices are what they were a few weeks ago) Carry over your DVD/HDD or get new ones, they are alsmot free at this point.. The big expense will be the G Card.. It was 1/3rd of my purchase price. Also a word of advice.. if you are "saving up or trying to buy things a piece at a time, buy RAM whenever its cheap... everything else, and I mean everything will cost the same or less if you wait.. you are better off buying it all in a big lump when you are ready.. |
What could I consider cheap for 2x4gb? £70ish?
I have an order down for a 1090t bundle but it's on hold while I think about the i5 situation. It's driving me crazy. On the graph on page 1, they're basically equivalent to each other, but the i5 users are much louder than the x6 users, so it's hard to decide. |

To me, this means whenever you acquire a new mobo, you'll have to jump for the latest. And the leaked 'dozer performance looks promising. Quote:
lol I got a G65, I so love this feature too. |
