Oleg Maddox's Room #1
Here you can ask your questions addressed to Oleg and share your thoughts about the game. But, please, behave decently and don't deluge Oleg with senseless all the same questions, read the messages before posting. Oleg is very busy person, be ready for waiting for answers a bit.
Thank you in advance. |
First of all many thanks for opening this room, it is much appreciated.
Now my question: Can we expect some kind of list regarding add-ons and changes implemented in the final 4.09 patch ? ( sure hope is not final, though) thanks in advance Zoran |
I would like it if Oleg could address the issue of countering the recent spate of hacks for 4.08, and to tell us what plans he has (if any) to once again lock down the game and combat those who would seek to open up the code.
Also, is it still 1C's plan to have UBI distribute SOW - BOB? Or will 1C now be doing this for the world? (Or will 1C use another game company?) |
I hope that people can be sensible here and not ask silly questions. What we all want to know is when will SoW:BoB released? Oleg must be painfully aware of the question so let's just wait to hear what he has to say. I'm sure he wants BoB out in the shops as soon as possible.
I read somewhere a while ago that Oleg will continue to support IL2 after BoB is released so I think we should wait until a. he announces the BoB release date and b. wait to hear what he will do with IL2. Patience is a virtue. |
I would like to know if we could get a "system requirements" for BoB, so that we may get our systems ready for when it is finally released.
Thanks. |
I remember Oleg saying way back that there would be AI available in Dogfight servers.
I wonder if the game had got onto testing Mutliplayer yet? |
Hello Oleg,
and thankyou for the 1C forum, feel's like home!......I would like to know if in SOW, will we be having Dynamic campaigns?...I assume the answer is YES....Also, will we have the full mission builder, if so...are there any major advancement's in it's use, thank's |
Hi,
my question is if SOW gives you the possibility in offline mode to start your mission in Hangars or Parking possitions? And if so will there be the possibilty to give the aircraft rolling waypoints on the ground. There have been rumors on the net about this feature, are they true? |
Hi Oleg
Firstly, thanks for the best combat flight sim EVER! (IL2) Secondly, thanks in advance for the future BEST combat flight sim EVER (BOB:SOW) Some questions: Can you tell us about any new features in BOB that we don't know about? So far, we know of dynamic weather and 6DOF...any surprises to come? You could just say yes, so as not to spoil the surprise!! What does the future hold for IL2? If you stop further work on it, will the community be able to add content to it in the future? What are your thoughts on the recently debated sound mod/hack? I have a seperate post asking about the availability of any IL2 merchandise...is there any available? If not, are there plans to do some merchandising? After 7 years with IL2, in my opinion, it is still the best WW2 flightsim on the planet. It seems silly to me to just drop it for something better. I think many people would like to see IL2 live on for a long time to come. I have enough space on my hard drive for IL2 and BOB:SOW! It would be kind of like the boys at Ferrari closing down their factory because they're tired of making those nice red cars... Just some of my thoughts - thanks for your time. cheers |
hello Oleg,
I'm wondering if it will be possible to give pilots separate AI. That in a way a squadron is a good mix of rookie, experienced, veteran and ace pilots. I know that processing power limits this, but I'm wondering how far this is possible. |

Hello all and Sir Oleg.
It's great to finally have another opportunity to talk to the big man himself. Obviously in first order are the thanks for the great game IL2 turned out to be and my deepest admiration for Oleg and all his development team. I have a couple (and by a couple I mean three because I suck at math) of questions. I hope they haven't been answered or asked anywhere else (I looked but not too hard): -Will there be an in-game multiplayer session browser and chat room? It'd be pretty cool in my opinion to be able to fly a couple of quick missions and then just fire up the multiplayer without having to go out of the game and launching another application. Nothing against Hyperlobby, I love it, but how awesome would it be if you could have Hyperlobby support from within the game itself? Or some sort of other game browser. -Following in the same vein, has there ever been plans or an idea to have a centralized skins server? It'd be pretty cool that when you show up in a game with a custom skin, it automatically gets uploaded to that server instead of the game hosting server, and when you join a new game you download all the skins from such server to prevent lagging and skipping on the game hosting server; it could be part of the loading process before you actually enter the game itself to have your skins sync up with the centralized skins server according to the skins being used in the game you're trying to join. -Lastly, have I ever flown with you online? heh Thanks! |

Hallo Oleg - Thanks for the new forum but i fear you may have 'opened a can of worms' hehe! Let's hope we can all enjoy this forum as enthusiasts and not have it spoilt by a few kids  |
.mis format
Hi Oleg,
Will the mission data files (.mis) be simple text as now? Or XML...? I'm thinking in terms of access for community software apps. Thank you sir. You rock our world. Best Regards, Flying Nutcase |
Hi Mr. Maddox
My question is: on what operatiing system SOW-BOB will run? Will it be based on OpenGl as Il2 was or DirectX? Will it be DirectX9 or 10? Or both? |
New forum, the usual suspects ;)
Well Oleg, if you have the time, here´s another one: I remember some talk about massively multiplayer servers in BoB (with a monthly fee). That would be very nice - is it still on the feature list? Mmm, hundreds of human controlled planes over London, think of that... I will not ask for a release date. Release it when it's done. /Mazex |
Will ground objects such as vehicles require more of an eye to spot? In IL2 it's like you have eagle eyes from high altitude.
|
Having great video card helps a bit too.
But then again..........to those with enraging myopia like me, nothing can help. Except some pretty sights......cheerleaders perhaps? Anyway. At UBi there are posts how to improve IL-2 visuals. But this is not about it. It's about having a sim where we can have better "visibility" of objects. |
Quote:
Anyway, something similar: I think IL2 proved that the method of having lower LODs that are larger than the higher LODs isn't very future-proof. Try fllying towards a Stuka from a distance with a screen resolution > 800x600 and you know what I mean. In general, I'm not afraid Oleg will let us down when it comes to the visuals (in particular low-level terrain). Yesterday I did a few flights in fs9 and BoBII and I was very glad to get back into IL2 with it's great scenery! |
Oleg's room, but no Oleg?!
|
Chances are, he's quietly checking it out, and preparing some answers to
our questions....I'm confident he'll make an appearance in the next week - or 2... |
Maybe he's waiting for questions:
1). Why the big secret about SoW. 2). Will Ubi be the publisher for SoW anywhere? 3). When can we see some SoW updates with vids and sounds? 4). Will 4.09 have new sounds? Seems it might discourage hacking. Sorry for repeating others questions but these are things I'd like to know. |
Hi Oleg and 1c !
Oleg - will SoW:BoB be available in 2007? - we still have a few months... Will the offline campaigns and missions be fully developed? or will you rely more on third party community involvement than you did in the Il2 franchise? Will there be more programmable camera views and options for the movie makers? Can we expect to see any screenshots or models in regular updates - like we had on Fridays in years past with the Il2 ? Looking forward to the new simulation you all have been working on for so long - I am sure it will be worth the wait even if it takes a long while yet. |
Hi Oleg
Will players be able to fly any heaavy bombers in SoW. Will SOW have some sort of fuel rearm and repair option. Will SoW have historic ground battles WITH infantary. |
Handley Page HP52 Hampden
Oleg - Do you have any plans to, or interest in including the Hampden in SoW BoB?

During BoB the Hampdens were active in the anti-shipping role, laying mines and bombing the invasion ports. In the later period they even sent two squadrons of Hampden torpedo bombers to Murmansk as part of the defence against Tirpitz for convoy PQ18, and subsequently they were taken over by the Russian Air Force. Total number produced was 1532. |
Hi Mr Maddox
A great "frenchie" question.. For now, french planes have never be represented as flying models in a sim. We have hope this for IL2 but around the time of AEP and after PF.. but BoB was already in mind and it was a better option to wait BoB for this.. Several fans are ready tu work about this topic, i've several contacts with many guys in various domains, i've also contact with fans owning many originals blue sheet for various french planes. My Question is : French planes an early war era can be interessting ? And to avoid useless work for theses fans, is the french planes welcome in BoB or future realease? As if we read some interview, we feel that may be the second opus of SoW can be around the mediteranean sea... ( not often used in sims) French planes can be included.. as they were laregely represented in North Africa.. ok it's vichy era.. and we prefer battle of france but.. planes are the same  Can we expect french planes in the future of SoW/BoB...? Can we provide help to do that? But maybe it's too early to have an answer |
A question for Mr Maddox - what are the borders of the Battle Of Britain map? As I understand there are add-ons Battle Of Poland and Battle of France so will the SoW:BoB map be from Scotland to Poland...Norway to Cherbourg?
For online dogfight maps will the Battle of Britain map be available in smaller detailed maps - for example from Kent to Pas de Calais? |
Quote:
As far as I remember from some screens, the map for SoW:BoB will not go up to Scotland, I don't even think it will include Liverpool or Manchaster. But who knows. |
Questions Mr Oleg Maddox's
I suspect you to be a very honorable person when it comes to game's, from what I have read I believe you to be a anti cheat and anti hacking computer programmer. Providing a very fair playable gaming forum.
With that said, is there any future for IL2 Sturmovik FB 1946? Being from the military myself (Army) I fell in love with this game 5 months ago and haven't stopped playing. It has everything a Military minded virtual Sims player could ask for, Ground targets, Flight targets, bombing runs and escorts. Even with the little world of tank battles gong on on the ground it's to bad you can't have actual players in those tanks on the ground calling up to flight command for direct support, to halt the enemy tank players, would be interesting to have such player controlled indepth in the game. Massive Multi-player? Maybe? I hope all is going well with the new IL2 Sturmovik 4.09, 10 version? I hope to see a fix for the IL2fb.exe shut down bug? Added dual CPU usage? Maybe tone down the killer AI gunners, I never seen a gunner when turning a plane with allot of G's get a cockpit kill? Well thats all I have for you at the moment, good luck and if you answer thank you. GF_Mastiff www.Battle-Fields.com |
Will there be ground crew and vehicles arming and fueling the planes? Will there also be ground crew moving around the airfield while we are taxiing our airplane around for takeoff and landing.

There have been hints that there will be a very comprehensive rearming and refueling in BOB SOW. I know Oleg has said that he is modelling the human skeletal frame. Some BOB modellers have also hinted that it could be implemented.
I know that rearming and refueling was an integral part of the Battle of Britain with pilots doing multiple sorties on a frequent basis. Some of the turn around times were very short and could be implemented as a variable time option to suit most players tastes. I remember Oleg wasn't a big fan of implementing it in the IL-2 series but not sure if it was the amount of work required or the reality of it. I got my fingers crossed that it will be a optional feature in the SOW series. |
I'm wondering about one other thing. How far has BOB2 Wings of Victory influenced SOW BOB?
|
Not much, but I'm sure Oleg has looked at what WOV has to offer. SOW's new combat flight engine should be far superior to Rowans old engine. Unless the few people that are working on WOV can get a better handle on the Rowan code and significantly upgrade it.
That being said...all the features that Oleg intends to implement in the SOW series will take considerable computer power and/or a very streamlined game engine. My guess is.... that this may be the major stumbling block to getting BOB out the door. We should have a better idea on the progess shortly. ~Salute~ Chivas |

Hi Mr. Maddox, i have some question about SOW:BOB
1) Dynamic Wheater: will this interesting feature be switchable to lower the cpu workload? (suggestion: fixed but randomly generated weather conditions like wind direction and overcat fronts would be awesome); 2) AI: will the AI situational awareness of AI pilots and gunners (also ship and land gunners) be subjected to sunlight blinding? This woulb be a very nice feature. Same for the night flying conditions: will moolight illumination, cloud and night sky silouhette of planes be a factor in AI's SA? IMHO a SOW: Night Blitz scenery and beyond would be a true piece of gold of simulation. 3) Last but not least, subvariants & modifications: i fell that many players will ask for various historical modifications or subvariants to improve aircraft performance. For example alloy ailerons instead of fabric ailerons for Spits or 109E-4 with mine shells and different canopy from 109E-3. What will be the policy for SOW regarding this subject? Best Regards |

Oleg,
could you please comment on this issue ? currently the biggest problem in the il2 sturmovik series is the poor "object visibility" at various distances they could be seen at in real life during ww2. (i am not speaking of "dot spotting", but seeing LoD models for planes, tanks, trucks against a terrain or water background as modeled on a pc) for ex: 1) - right now we have already good looking models for trucks, tanks, etc... when you look at them close up (like 20 or 50 meters) 2) - the terrain textures and colors also look good for fields and forests etc.. for low and medium altitude flying up to 2000 meters this gives a nice sense of immersion ! (compared to other current flightsims) but .... 1 + 2 described above does not give a realistic experience to simulate what real pilots could see from their cockpit in WW2 ! the main problem is that the 3 dimensional LoD models for trucks, trains, tanks or aircraft do not "stand out" enough against the terrain background, and this reduces their visibility distance by about 50 to 70% ! for ex from 1000 to 1500 meters altitude in real life you can spot a small collum of stationary trucks on the road, or a few tanks out in the open in a field. in il2 currently you have to be down at about 400 or 500 meters to have a chance to spot a tank in a field, or to find 3 or 4 trucks standing on a road. so you have to fly much lower and slower, and you can only visually scan for a very small sector ! this is not caused by "camouflage" paint being used on those objects (which was also used in real life obviously), it is cause by 3D objects visually "blending" into the 3D terrain when represented on a flat 2 D monitor we look at. (most pc games have this problem, but for a flight simulator it is a big issue because we are constantly trying to see objects at those distances) getting better looking objects in BoB is great for close up viewing, but will the problem of having a realistic "spotting distance" for those objects on a pc monitor at medium and farther distances be addressed so it is more realistic ? note: using the zoom button is not a realistic solution, because you cant permanently fly with that setting. the size of a persons monitor, and the distance they sit from it, will determine the "correct FoV setting" for that individual. using that correct setting we should be able to locate, identify, and track both stationary and moving objects at the same distances as we do in real life, that is the challenge of "simulating" a ww2 pilot experience. |
SoW - BoB hardware requirements
Hello Oleg & team,
I know it's difficult to tell when the game is not ready, but could you give us some clues about what PC we need to play Storm of War? Remember you said you would do it in August? I need to assemble a new computer now and want to make the more open decisons for when the game is released (putting money now where it's worth). So, here ar some questions: XP or Vista OpenGL or DirectX (10?) Graphic card type Dualcore or more Ram memory In short, will SoW be a next generation PC (Vista-DX10-4core..) -ready or -only one? Thanks for hours of fun, laughs, adrenaline, off and online. |
Bump-a-daisy

Besides i think it would be safe to assume that since Oleg Maddox's company has set-up a new official forum, including his very own board for answering questions/making announcements, that he will do just that very soon. So let's just wait until the man is ready and not turn this into 25 pages of the same old questions and spam  Quote:

Hi Oleg
Thankyou for making IL2 on OpenGL as I can now run IL2 on LINUX!!! (via wine (www.winehq.org) ) Also any possibility of making also Linux version of BoB ? Thankyou Shelton. |
At least a Linux based dedicated server would be really cool!

WOW
The level of detail is staggering! Thank you so much Oleg for the update, I'm all excited all over again! :D Would an open door in flight etc affect the aerodynamics of the plane? I look forward to any future postings! :D |
Thanks Oleg, looking extremely cool 8)
|
The BR20 images are great. So much detail to take in. Can't wait to see it in 3D.
A few questions about the sim: Will the AI performance of planes v. ships be greatly improved in BoB compared with IL-2. The Battle of Britain really started over the beaches of Dunkirk. If the navy had not been successful in extracting most of the expeditionary force then there would have been little or nothing left to defend the coast of Britain and the government may well have started peace negotiations. The navy would not have been successful without the support of the RAF. So I hope that the campaign will start with the defence of the evacuation fleet over Dunkirk and actions between Stukas and destroyers, and plenty of the "Little Ships" This action really turns BoB on its head. Its the RAF that have the disadvantage of limited flying times over the beaches and the prospect of limping back over the channel in damaged planes. And you need to balance conservation of planes and pilots over the need to extract as much of the army as possible. After Dunkirk of course we move straight onto the convoy battles in the Dover Straits. More plane v ship action. Hopefully we will see realistic defensive manouvering by ships, and we wont see a column of ships all sinking because they all run into the ship which is sinking at the head of the line. Intelligent avoiding action is required. In the mission builder it will be good to be able to assemble fleets and then to plot their course as a single unit with the AI taking care of individual ship position keeping. I guess this is too much to ask for, but what about dynamic tides, with the sea level dropping to expose the vast areas of sand flats around the mouth of the Thames and the Goodwin Sands. If you can have dynamic weather why not dynamic tides? |
The Screens of the BR.20M are looking very good. Nothing to say about model quality (that's a given, anyway :P ) but I must say I was very positively surprised by the balance of the camouflage colours. They look very much on the spot to me (even though I'm no expert on italian colours  ) so unless an italian expert is saying otherwise I give a big fat thumbs up!
|
Oleg, could you please be more specific about..
"Please pay attention that all doors openable, rear low platform for the turret is openable (by AI or by the player)."" What does this actually mean for gameplay? I mean, the only reason I can see to make doors openable, is to make it possible for the players to actually move around???+ inside the plane? Please elaborate :D |
BR-20
Hi Oleg, the Italian colours look good and correct, and I assume they're the RLMs that I suggested to Alex, after checking them with a group of "experten" friends. The camo shows the typical "three tones" of the early-war Italian aircrafts. The mottling is better than it was in the early screenshots that Alex sent me, but it's still a bit far from how it should be. The mottles should overlap here and there (green above dark brown, sand as background). They should also appear a bit more blurred and less regular in shape. If you want, I can still send you (or Alex) all the details, the original picts, and more observations. Cheers Abraxa |
At least this time it's not me who finds the fly in the ointment.
|
yep, you can take a break and relax for a while
|
He's still blinded by the camo pattern ;)
|
Thank you for posting Oleg! We appreciate you taking the time to do this for us, as it makes the wait a little easier.

He says it looks better in engine just like the cinema! I hope that means that the frame rates are really good as well.

Thank you Oleg.

Wow have you seen the level of detail... you can make out panels INSIDE the plane from the view point outside the open side door...
Can you imagine if you can walk around on the ground... and walk up to the plane and enter it like in some FPS... with some "pilot" actions as in GRAW... we could easaly have a combined arm sims.... Imagine Infantry/ground vehicules/air.... maybe even ships.... You got my imagination going in overdrive Oleg... |

Re : B-20 screenshots
I just saw your new B-20 pictures, Oleg. Fantastic job!
The thing I am wondering about is the use of special layers and shader models on the aircraft in BoB:SoW. What will be used for the engine? I hope it`s just not present on the working 3D model. Take a look at the glass surfaces, I hope Oleg`s team will make that more 'glass-like' with use of the appropriate shader textures (i do not know much about the tech itself), because that stil looks like 'semi-transparent, dark layer-stuff' and not canopy windshield.. with those shaders, bump maps (rivets! panel lines!) increadibly cool and life like looking aircraft can be made. Don`t get me wrong I like all the new little detail, the hatches, the 'real' model that has details in and out, but I also hope the graphical level is more than just Il-2, with let`s say, triple the polygon count. In any case, it`s good to see some life signs from BoB:SoW. Can we expect beta anytime soon? I`d like to participare (again. I did some work with original Il-2) |
thank you for the renders Oleg, I really like the detail your artists have put into that aircraft!

News is a good news for future.. men @ work!! Br20m is a nice plane i think guy like Abraxxa agreed with that  it's also for BoB a sort of exotic plane even if used that was for a very short time.. The good new is .. if we have a BR20m it's not only for his rôle during the BoB.. so we find it certainly on a more synny theater of war  |
Abraxa was talsking about paint scheme according to the references he has sent to Oleg guys some time ago.
Br-20 3D model is simple outstandig...really fantastic, thank a lot!!!! I cant't wait for the germans. BTW...would be nice have some news about BoB, engine first of all. |
Oleg's back 8)
Nice to see all the moveable parts. |
Nice to see you posting again Oleg! The BoB pics are nice, but I think first and foremost we are all wondering about the status of 1946 regarding 4.09, soundmods and any future add-ons/maps. What will 4.09 include (i.e. aircrafts, maps, FM changes/additions ) ? What is your opinion on the soundmod ( v.09 ) ? Thanks. I hope you can reply soon.
|
Will we be able to open the bomb bay doors before dropping the bombs in BoB? I found it very strange that, in a flight sim as detailed as IL-2, one is not required to open or close the bomb bay doors on any of the bombers. This, in a sim where you have control over individual magnetos!
I'm hoping for the best, as I'm sure Oleg will not disappoint. |
Thanks for the much awaited update Oleg. The Italian Bird looks splendid indeed. Looking forward to seeing it in the engine..
Can anyone remember what texturesize a plane like that uses? |
hey oleg!
thanks for the update, and i am glad to hear updates are gonna come every 2-3 weeks! please take your time with the production! :D we have our hands full with 1946 ;) |
