Russian version review
LOL for those of us brave soles that took the risk i thought a small review might be in order. Everything worked according to the threads that posted how to get this version but and a really big BUT this game is almost unplayable lol.
It should be said that i have a a crossfire set up which may be causing all of the glitches but there is such huge potential here anyway. i managed to get myself through the training flights but not being able to map the keys and the constant stuttering is just unbearable and this is overlooking the fact that i cant read a lick of Russian. lol the voices are in English but impossible for me to understand what the guy is saying except for a couple of words here and there since its so garbled. again might be an audio setting that i can not read to change. LOL for 14 bucks it is well worth it to potentially have in my possession what might be the only potentially unaltered version of the game to release ever. ill still buy the US version now when it comes but having this version now also leaves me the option to edit this one and hopefully get it back to full glory someday and hopefully in English lol I have never dabbled with the video capture so im sorry for not posting a video but this will have to do. with all the graphics turned all the way up (i think) lol the performance was playable if the filter would have been able to be turned off. there were however LOTS of visual type weird things going on all over the place clipping and just chaos except for the cockpit itself. but as stated this could be because of the crossfire set up. verdict is this game has the potential to be the best flight sim ever if we can somehow put it back to the way it was. But even if everything was in English for this version with all the problems it still has a very long way to go my cpu specs WIN7 64 Asus M4A89TD 890FX Chipset AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition 2x AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 8GB (2GBx4) Corsair generic 1600Mhz (CPU caps at 1333) 30GB Kingston 2.5 inch SATA Gaming MLC Solid State (boot) 2x 1TB SATA III 6.0 Gb/s 64MB Cash 7200RPM HDD (Raid 0)(data) and some good cooling built just for IL2 lol will see if it ends up being enough rofl Many thanks again to everyone who posted how to get this version. cheers |

How is playability with settings on medium? (As best you can tell!:-)) I don't really expect to be able to play all new releases maxed out.
|
Hm, what I am trying to do is to force DX9 renderer... IN the conf.ini, there is this variable:
Render=D3D10_0 Just wondering what value it needs to use DX9... |
Quote:
I would suggest trying that and then running it again. Plus take a look at the translated config pages and use them to perhaps reduce your settings. http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/attachm...1&d=1301174993 http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/attachm...2&d=1301175006 |
..
The like i said even with everything turned all the way up it really seemed like it would have been very smooth i would say close to 50fps maybe more except there was the very distinct pause like every 5 sec or so which i am gathering is what that filter does, or its due to the crossfire.
i tried turning the graphics completely down to minimum and it was the same thing very smooth with the pause every 5 sec or so. lol I have no idea hot to disable one card if it is simple walk me through it and I will test it out. |
Well your 5-second stutter seemed to trigger a bell for me from the old IL2 engine. I found this an wonder if it could be related?

Try to switch the general settings, it has a list with 5 positions in it. Pick the extremes, and have a look at the right part of the detailed settings, and see which of them have the three checkboxes actully chcked - that's the highest setting for IL2 CoD. |

hmm so if im reading that rite it was the water not the clouds that was causing the issue. I will try turning off the water the next time I run it. I was also hoping that someone would clue me in as to how i disable one video card to see what that does as well this has also got to have something to do with the weird visual effects. |
Quote:
U have to disable the card in CCC. Note that i assume this because thats what one do when running NVidia. There is a page in the control panel where u choose to run 1 or 2 card and choose also if CPU, GPU1 or GPU2 is suppose to run PhysX. No reason why its any different in CCC/Crossfire (except for the PhysX part off course) |

LOL I used to be so proud of myself when I would just copy and paste a boot disk one of my smart friends had made to make a game run for me (386 and 486dx2) and got another game to run on the same boot disk. with that said i have been to my CCC panel and i can see both cards i think one seems to be running and the other sitting idle. i dont know if this is how they normally are when no programs are running or if the guy that built my computer for me just knew that i would never know if they were both actually working or not LOL I just assumed that when two cards were in there and connected via the crossfire plug that they were both working. I did not see any option that said to disable either card nor did i see one that gave me the option as to what i wanted each card to handle. I apologize for my electrical ignorance ahead of time. I will gladly test any configuration that you guys are willing to walk me through :) |
As far as I saw, the stutters might be caused by sounds/effects.
Disable all sounds (from config file), and give it another go. Then try again without/lowest effects. Now, if this proves right (as it seemed to me when I've tried it yesterday, but I only have a crappy laptop in here in London, my computer monster sits at home in Bucharest), then this, corelated with what Oleg said about multicore/multithreading (that only the sounds are actually made on different threads), then it means we are in front of poor multi-threading programming (stutters caused by the main process waiting signal clearance from threads finishing their job). |
Quote:
PS i might have been incorrect at the amount of fps i was previously getting it turns out that over (water only) even with sounds running and everything maxed out i get almost flawless performance but the second there is any land rendering in site this drastically declines to the point that if i am over london even with everything turned completely down as far as it will go i still get plenty of tearing, clipping and lag. I would like to try this once i have turned the sound off like you said and see if it makes a difference but as it stands the only place that i could dog fight would be over water. land is out completely as i cant go any lower on settings and it is still awful. |
try it from inside the game then, settings, audios section. uncheck both music and sound
|
Quote:
all that goes away when i do this is the menu and ingame music as well as the radio chatter. the engine and gun sounds stay as well as the opening video sound. |
and the game still stutters?
anyway, if you are still hearing some sounds, it means the audio engine is not completely shut down, so it might still cause stuttering (if it is the cause for them). |

Might be a stupid question, but you don't have Windows Live Messenger or something similar running in the backgound on your pc (in the taskbar for instance) do you? I've seen this affect Arma2 in this way (the 5sec micropause) as though its checking/pinging something - just a thought to knock off anything like that, that may be running.

Please keep us informed about your stutter issue, i've seen that on gta4 and gears of war, 5 second stutters... solved using ccleaner and reinstalling the drivers. |

It seems that VRAM makes the only difference in this release's performance, since you can have 3Gbs or 12Gbs of RAM and you don't have benefits. |
Disable one card and try it again

Just tried to play for a bit and my view on il2 COD is
Negatives 1 Is/was not ready to be released. 2 Buggy as hell 3 Stuttering all over the place 4 Colours way to bright on landscape Positives 1 Nice menus 2 Models look awsome 3 Trees and towns are beautifull 4 Water looks really good I tried playing on different graphics settings and my conclusion is that for an engine that has been made over the last few years it should perform way better then this. A highend system shouldnt be struggling to pump out good fps nowadays so either the structure in wich the code is written is either badly making advantage from all the hardware features or there is something seriously wrong thats holding the engine back (Epilepsy filter?) My system : Core I7 920 @ 3.8Ghz / 6Gb ddr3 / GTX 480 / Win7 64 |

I think a may have confused it a bit. Disabling crossfire, i think, is done in CCC and the game/global settings. U know, where u set AA and AF and stuff like that outside the game. If its anything like NVidia controle panel u can hover the cursor over each setting and a text should pop up explaining what each setting does. Running NVidia now so i cant check myselfe. |

Ok did some intensive testing today with lots of different settings disabling sound did nothing except stop the sound:P the fps stayed the same and the stuttering also remained. Followed Adonys instructions for adding the removal of the Filter and it didn't crash but visually i am not sure i noticed a difference but this can be because im still not able to run on high settings due to the crossfire. I tried disabling one card and it did greatly improve the fps but the stuttering remained and for some reason it messed up my color and i was unable to fix this until i did a system restore lol anyway both cards are back enabled now and i have tried playing the game with default settings across the board with just the filter off. With default settings filter off over water with only about 10 or less planes in the air including me the stuttering is at a minimum and the game looks and plays well enough to pass :) this does make me feel good though as it seems that these are mostly all issues related to the fact that its only using 1 core 32 bits and one card poorly. |
Guys just update on my gaming experience on Cliffs of Dover.
Now I don't know what's happened, but after starting CoD again after a brake, I am suddenly getting a MUCH better FPS and performance from this game. I am currently playing on all graphics settings on HIGH level and I have an amazing FPS. I am over the SEA so I don't know would happen if I would fly over a city for example. Somehow I feel that I have managed to remove the antiepilepsy filter, perhaps the line in the conf.ini worked afterall? I did test approaching those bombers again and it did start to stutter really bad again, the game became a slideshow, but as soon as the airplanes were more far away again the performance was really good. So it does give me a lot of hope towards this game. Also setting clock to 6am and watching sunrise I have to say that actually everything about this game is REALLY beautiful when you are flying on high altitude. So perhaps I was a bit too negative in my earlier review. I'll go to sleep now do more testing tomorrow. |
Yep I am positive now, the anti-epilepsy filter is definitely gone from my IL-2 the performance is so good. Now there is still a lot of tweaking needed to be done for sure, but now I am starting to believing in this project, the experience of playing this game is totally unique. I just saw blue fumes flaming out of my engine and it looked beautiful at 5am in the morning, and I was in top of london and still getting a playable framerate, but offcourse not as good as over the water.. (all graphics details on HIGH except shadows disabled).
I don't know if I could get such a good framerate from the international version tho, as we don't know if it is possible to disable this filter from that version..?? Well nobody knows at this stage. But it runs so well now that I wont install the international version at this stage.. I have to say that not has any game ever given such an feeling of "being there" as this game. It does feel totally immersive, as if you were really flying the plane. If someone could help me to find binding key for changing the seat, I cannot get into any other seats in my planes as the keybinding C (which is supposed to be default) doesn't work for some reason, so I cannot test any other seats except pilot seats.. Anyway time to go to sleep now, long day behind.. |
I'm not sure thats it a good thing if the game stutters to a crawl whenever you are around other planes :) If I remember correctly the idea of the game is to look for and get close to other planes :)

Also, a lot of people report that much of the stuttering could be due to inefficient loading of textures and various other stuff. Some say that they get higher FPS if the re-fly the mission, or if they pause and cycle through the external cameras. Also, there is a blurry texture effect when a lot of things are going on in the screen (i noticed it on some youtube videos) that is very similar to what happens sometimes in FSX: it's like the game can't load everything fast enough, so it substitutes lower detail and low-res textures on the aircraft skins until it has time to render it properly. All of this probably points to an inefficient loading routine, or maybe a need to optimize what loads before the mission and from how far away the land textures will be pre-cached. If for example my view distance is 30km and the game loads ground textures in 15km segments, it's obvious that i'll be getting a lot of texture pop-up. Finally, i think that apart from the bugs that need to be fixed, there's probably a whole lot of undocumented tweaks that people currently have to discover for themselves, at least until the developers can provide an updated readme in a following patch to walk us through it all. Overall, i remain optimistic. Some guy in the Russian forum posted a guide and said he can now get a consistent 60 FPS at acceptable detail levels with a more or less mid-range PC (i think). I don't exactly remember his specs but i think he had an AMD Phenom quad, an Ati 5xxx or 6xxx series card and 8Gb of RAM? If he can get 60 FPS by tweaking stuff all by himself, i'm sure i'll be able to manage 30 FPS on my i7 920/Ati 4890 after a couple of patches and a small RAM upgrade (i'm thinking of going from 3GB to 6GB, purely because my win7 64 needs between 700mb and 1GB at idle). By the way, does anyone know how a 4890 1Gb compares to the DX11 cards if they both render in DX10 mode? Are the DX11 cards so much faster or can i expect just slightly slower performance since the sim runs in DX10 mode? EDIT: Apparently, what the guy in the Russian forum did was open conf.ini and disable dynamic lights, among other things. That's the one thing i definitely remember about his optimizations. |
With the filter removed, do you now have SLI/Xfire support ?
|
side note
played the first mission of the GB campaign like 3 times in a row on various settings was playable on max with 1x anti-aliasing although heavy shudder when it hit
played again on medium settings (default) still with 1x anti and again was playable slightly better fps and a pretty heavy shudder but hit less often. then again on everything low setting except for debris and aircraft model slightly better fps and far fewer shudders but still big when they hit some were lasting like 6-10 seconds. todays testing was was geared on finding out (still guessing really but an educated one at least:P ) weather or not my rig will be able to run this game at full max settings after its tweaked and i believe this is a solid yes. :) i even followed the river rite through the middle of london with max settings and the fps was probably 10-15 (full on slide show) plus the 10 second long shudders but i was still able to follow the river through town. If this is the performance using 32 bits, 1 core, 1 or 2GB ram and not even all of one of my video cards to run then i am a very happy camper at this moment:) |
Quote:
removing the filter did give a very noticeable jump in fps which led to my posting above. I am now as sure as i can be that i bought enough rig to max this game out once it is properly utilizing all of my available hardware properly.:) |
@bryan i have i920 12ram and radeon5850.
I have come to conclusion that in my case there is not much difference wheter i play on high or low settings. The game runs great when flying solo, problems occur in near distance dogfights. So i guess that at least in my case the problems are not in the hardware but within the game itself. There is some optimisation that needs to be done. |

Sorry Brian, I should of explained a bit.
Luthier mentioned in a post "I want to confirm that everything said here is true, we have implemented some drastic features for anti-epilepsy protection which are affecting FPS and killing SLI support." So I`m assuming if you no longer have the filter enabled you should have SLI/Xfire support. In ROF if I use SLI I get a noticable decrease in fps, it`s not supported. |
@Speedingbullets I don't think it will be that simple (Removing one line from conf.ini and sli is supported)..

Can someone try running at a more realistic resolution to see how the fps is say like 1600x900 or 1024 x 768. Lower res may give big boost to fps.
|
@oldschool61 the resolution doesn't make any change in this case when you are running on a high end machine. Like I have stated before, the problem is not the hardware, it is the code in the game. Run it on the fastest processor on the market, with best video card and it would probably still stutter badly in close combat. No joke.

i see :) ok so i have been bouncing back and forth between IL2 1946, ROF, and IL2 COD all weekend and i have left all 3 games playing while i watch my processor utilization as well as my video card activity. After doing this for two days now all i can conclude at this point is that my video cards and processor are both stable and running fairly cool with ROF and 1946 at 1920 x 1080 res full settings on both as well as my cards doing a lot of extra filtering. Both games run flawlessly. IL2 COD at any resolution at any settings really even if i do get improvments in FPS, the shudder is still present and for some reason this game causes my Master Video card to peg at full activity and it runs consideribly hotter. Now these cards run hot any way i know but i have been watching mine for about 3 months now and im pretty sure that the crossfire is not being utilized because of how its acting. It is acting like the Master video card is doing all of the work and the slave is just sitting idle. This leads me to believe that if the Filter and the SLI/Crossfire are linked together somehow then the filter is not deactivated and will not be (based on the latest report) until after the first round of patches. I hope this clarifies what i have found so far. if not then im sorry have only slept about 3 hours in the past 48 :) |
Could someone check the fragmentation rate of the hdd after install? It is known, that some games leave the disk behind as a battlefield after install.
(Just thinking about Armed Assault 2, which leaves an empty dedicated partition 30% fragmented after install) |
~S~
On behalf of 79vraf i would like to thank all 1c company members for all your work involved in that creation, even though it could brake a few marriages or caused some of You to loose weight or even opposite it was all worth it... Hi chaps, just got my copy downloaded from Russians only 14$... now this game is worth every single penny u spent on it so I think I am going to get English ver now as well. I had a bit of headache for a 2 days because of it and peoples screaming on the forums, but now all the problems seems to be sorted out. Major issue was to sort out why the game crashes when tried to change screen actualy projector resolution - solution simple as usual and for long time I didn't even thought that it is 64bit unfriendly :( every single application u run while installing game needs to be run as an administrator and in win xp sp3 compatibility, that way u got everything right running win7 64bit ver, there is that little file that extracts cod steam launcher I forgot all about it and there u go 2 days of horror . There is a long dispute about epilepsy but that issue is sorted already by developers, it will be optional, and average fps is fine for a moment but it will be only better after game will get few optimisation patches. I run high video configuration with average 40-45 fps over sea and 35-40 (least was 25) over land, of course city of :) blondon is a fps killer, planes looks nice but cockpits are simply astonishing, nature of landscape and roads, cities is quite real so you can loose enemy very easy on the deck... Now that was about graphics, flight model is great, felling of the airplane is light and may seems to be too sensitive but from the other side u can fell every single wind blow hitting fuselage and wings, controlling all devices is not easy just like real airplane and it is all done manually I mean with the mouse u got the felling like u flying real thing, of course it's optional and it is possible to assign key to everything but I get used to Fsx already and I think it is one huge step forward for il2 developers and the way it's done is slightly different than Fsx, the only thing that surprised me is that aircrafts wings are still in place after 420m/ph dive and pulling maybe 12g. Whole ambience and lights are well created and beautifully exposed over ugly skins... Games engine seems to be working great even with few imperfections from graphic side. Complexity of flight difficulty settings, armament settings damage model, ai behaviour and many other features makes that engine a dream I only hope that developers will keep us awake with updates for next 6 years :) we have very wise community and they will give developers directions, I can see already how much influace of communinity is in that game. Overall felling after I sort few hours in the air is incredible, I feel I can grab real hurrican for a spin now... Just to be clear I give u my spec: I7 930 clocked to 4Ghz, 3x2 GB RAM at 1333, geforce gtx 470, asus p6t deluxe v2 mobo, 1000W psu, track ir 4, saitek x52+rudder ped, acer 1260p projector |
Thanks Bryan,
I hav`nt noticed any posts mentioning whether SLI/Xfire was working since the filter was removed from Russian versions. It would of been some good news to share if it is. S! and rest |
