Most of these pics were never initially released to the public either, Roosevelt tightly controlled the press and wouldn't allow any photo of casualties until well into 44. He lost control over the "free press" right after January 44 when news of Japanese atrocities finally made it into the public. The public never even knew of the death march until 44, it's reflected in the rapid ramping up of the war effort in the Pacific.
