What do you think about the game?
We are very interested in your opinion on our games and wish you tell us what you think about Fantasy Wars. What are you waiting from this game? How do you like graphics, gameplay, sound, advantages, disadvantages and so on. Feel free to express your thoughts. :)
|
From having played the demo, I love the game.
My only probem so far (and it's a big one), is the technical problem I am having with the demo. See my post in the Technical Issues forum. What I'd like to see for the game is more factions. For example, dwarves and elves as their own seperate full factions and an Undead faction, etc. |
I was pretty surprised by how good this game actually is. I'm rarely surprised by the demo of a game I had never heard of before. The graphics are nice, the gameplay seems polished and fun. I'm seriously thinking about buying it once it's released here in Canada. Reminds me a bit of the underrated Fantasy General. Watching the fight up close is pretty neat and so is the option to skip these views.
In fact, the worst thing I found about this game is its title. |

We do have plans to release the game in Nort America so please stay tuned, we will announce the release date pretty soon. |
While only being able to judge from several demo play throughs, in overall i like the game so far.
The resemblance to Fantasy General is quite obvious (especially the unit-upgrades and the damage system itself), but the game offers quite a lot of improvements graphically and playwise to justify a release of its own. Graphics are nice, a little bit more animated terrain in the main hexfeld view would have been nice to keep oneself focused. The close up fights in Battle Isle style are quite amusing done sometimes, but i tend to turn them off in long battles, after a while one has seen most of the animations. Still, i appreciate the work done there. Flying units are difficult to judge where on the battlefield they are exactly sometimes. It's difficult to tell something about gameplay right now with two demolevels. It seems to be fairly balanced (Bronze easily reachable, Silver with taking care, Gold really takes some planing), and i didn't noticed major bugs. Interface feels intuitiv, no deep tree-based menus, everything accessible, although the activated hero and unit abilities are somewhat unconspicuous placed. The sound is okay, nothing special, but i wouldn't turn it off immediatley. Advantages: Well, i do like the customization system with perks. Some perks seems to be imbalanced, but overall the choices are varied enough to have fun playing with various combinations. The support and hero system is well done. The quasi-isometric look makes the game easily accessible while playing, and suits the turn-based system. Disadvantages: Terrain seems to influence the game sometimes too much. While having various modifications for different terrain is a common feature, it is sometimes really difficult to break off closely defended high-defensive terrain even with superior numbers and unit levels. In the beginning i did have to look for quite a while where to view artifact abilities and how to assign them to different characters, this is somewhat unintuitiv right now, maybe the tutorial in the full version will solve this problem. Overall a nice game in a nearly dead genre (turn based strategy), which will please most fans and maybe even draw attention from outside (but no suprise hit like Kohan back then, sorry). Looking forward to the release. |
First of all, I'd like to thank you for opening this forum. It's good to know that the people waiting for the English release of this game are looked after.
I've been playing computer games for more than 15 years now, and I've also had the pleasure to get my hands on a few published by 1C (games made by different developers - e.g. the game Perimeter is still one of my favorites). Although PC is a high-end configuration which is awaiting to fulfill its purpose with games like Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3, I also keep an eye out for less hyped games that are fun and deserve to be played with. That's how I stumbled upon Fantasy Wars. I've picked up the demo from FilePlanet one day as I was bored after work, and it blowed me away. The game is innovative, provides a lot of fun and the atmosphere is great. Similar games, like the Heroes of Might and Magic series, King's Bounty (which will have a sequel in a couple of months) or Age of Wonders as in turn-based strategies are all familiar to me and they are one my favorites. It just takes a lot of time to play with them, and I don't have 4-6 hours each day anymore. The idea is really great to separate the combat (tactic) from the rest (strategy), and because it's turn-based, it still retains it's own deep level of strategy. Okay, we've seen war-games before (Close Combat series for example) but none of them where this fun and easy to play, complex in the background with a fantasy theme for years and years now. Seems like you are blending every good aspect of turn-based strategy games. Units can gain levels, there are towns and cities to be taken, groups have skills and perks, the number of units can be really seen, there are small quests to complete with various bonuses, hero units, spells and the list could go on and on. All this and now we are finally allowed to only focus on the combat and on the battlefield itself. Let's start with the graphics. It's not next-gen that requires a Duo Core and a GeForce 8 series but there is no need for that in these kind of games. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous, the colors are vibrant and alive, everything is there to make the player relax and enjoy it. The units are nice to watch as well, so far they all look fine, and most importantly, kind of 'realistic' in what people would expect from fictious monsters would look like. The battle between two parties are detailed well. To say the least, I'd say the graphics are what I would expect from such a game. The sounds are okay but they need more kick to it. The music is very nice, but the units' noises and responses - well there aren't any. Only while there is a cut-scene. Groups fighting with each other have some grounting noises but they that's almost impossible to hear. The battles should be more convincing in this aspect, make the fighting and the units' attack and taunts noisy, as you would expect from two parties clashing and killing the enemies in a fierce battle. The sounds need a but of adjusting and tweaking in my opinion, just to have the combat (which is one of the most important aspects of this game) more feeling to it. Gameplay is the hardest to rate, I wrote a couple of positive things about it in the beginning of my post. To be honest, I wouldn't change anything at all. I like everything I've seen and experienced so far and I don't know how I could change it to make it better (if you can make it better, that is) without losing anything or messing with the balance. The 3 factions should suffice as well, hopefully there are a lot of maps to play in multiplayer. The map editor is a nice feature and gesture. There are multiplayer modes like internet play, LAN and hot-seat and that should suffice. In the end, I like to thank you for reading this looong story-like review through, and I am especially grateful that you made sure that the game supports Windows Vista and has widescreen resolutions that don't distort or stretch the screen in any way. Everything works brilliant. Fantasy Wars really warms my heart, we rarely see games that are fun and entertaining but won't get frustrating at the same time. I have no idea about the release date of the English version (heard rumors about November, well I hope that's true) but I'm sure to buy one as soon as it hits the shelves. |
I could not get the demo to work, but would very much like to as the game looks good. Is there a patch or sth for Vista? Or perhaps somewhere to go for trouble shooting?
|
The game was developed when Vista wasn't on the market yet, so it wasn't supposed to run in this system, but anyway if everything is ok with the demo itself the game should work in Vista. So, could you describe your problem in more detail, then we'll try to give you an advice.
Thank you for your question. |
the demo was great. it really reminds me of a 3d Fantasy General which was a very good game. will it be available via download on your website? hopefully it will sell well enough to merit an expansion.

I got the Demo to work.
I'll start with pros PROS -Army size change feature (I don't know wether it is a new idea or not, either way it is good) -Simple, easy to use quick to learn interface -visually pleasing world -Good descriptions on skills -Animations and Spells look beautiful -It is satisfying to watch a hero send units flying Overall the game looks and feels smooth, and I only encountered one very minor graphical glitch/lag. All the units look very good, and their animations are unique and realistic. When the spectral wolves were running around, I got this feeling of menace, and when the goblins ran, I could smell their cries of fear peircing dimensional walls. (That made no sense, but oh well) My overall cons are petty, little things. (Sounds could be adjusted, I would change this here and nitpick at this, nothing worth mentioning) However, my main con is that the game doesn't draw me in. I'm not sure what it is, but the game doesn't captivate me the way some do. When I quit halfway through a replay of the Human game to write all this down, I didn't feel like "Oh, I just want to do one more thing first." The game just doesn't feel quite right. Not that its a bad game, but playing it won't change my world, and not buying it won't be a major decision for me. It might be just me, though. I think it was the lack of "Fantasy" that threw me. The bits of spellcasting (Fireball, Freeze) were good, but it seemed more like jus "Wars." I think it would be greatly improved to have more spell casters, more variation in units. Eg, if there were more fantastic beasts available. I'm sorry for the sort of pessimistic review. Its good work, but I don't know how successful it will be. Good luck, get it on the shelves, and work on King's Bounty. EDIT: I think I missjudged: The game is quite good, I was just being dumb because I was loosing. I've happily gotten to a Silver in Freiburg, working on Gold. The game really is addicting, and I think I will buy a copy when it comes out. November, you said? And is it against the rules to post screenies for people? |

I'm confused, is it:
Humans Orcs Elves & Dwarves or Humans Orcs Elves Dwarves |
I only played the demo shortly but heres few things that came to mind:
(1) The sounds might need just lil bit of tuning. I.e the walking sounds are so silent that I can barely hear them. I really like to hear my troops march. (2) Units seemd to gain "levels" or somthing for which you can choose perks. I didnt notice any graphical "ding!" indicator that would say which units have unchosen perks. Now I just accidently found that som units had them. The demo was quite brilliant. I really liked the orc mission. Not so much of the human one but that was simply because I was overwhelmed with units and stuff. In the real campaign Im sure the units & stuff are brought to the player gradually instead of throwing it all at once. Overall its a superb game. Especially I like the way the zoom workes. Its just so fluent and full of detail. And you can even see the individual soldiers in a unit! It works really nice. Its a good evolution for the general-series. Thank you for doing a remake of fantasy general! It was a favorite of mine and many others. |
Good game!
Thank a lot for the rebirth of the hexagonal turn based game! Please, give us a patch with news maps, a true skirmish mode, news races, a true skirmish mode, news artifact, a true skirmish mode, a map editor, a true skirmish mode, elfe and dwarf separate... :D Please! Congratulations guys, you are going to be the target of all the mad community of heroic fantasy turn based fan! Courage, just a few work again and this good game will become so great that a new dollar license will birth :) PS : Give us the tools, and the community will do the work :) |
just so they're clear, Elmereth, do you want a skirmish mode?
|
Yes !
Particularly for the multiplayers options, I think that such a good game like that deserve a true skirmish mode, with lot of things to configure (for example : starting army, starting heroes, map emplacement, artifact density, customizable ai, opponent race, etc..) |
I agree. I can't wait till the game comes out, I'll deffinitely get a copy. Good summer game.
|
Would also like confirmation if skirmish mode is available with the ability to provide random maps and various settings.
Thoroughly enjoyed the demo. :) |
This is one of the few demos I stumbled over that really impressed me. I have to say that the title is kind of silly, but so was the last one(Mythic Wars), fortunately the game was far better thna I would expect from such a title name.
Naturally I bought the game. |
I have only played the first missions in the human campaign so far, but I am really enjoying it. Nice graphics too, gives me a nostalgic feeling of old hex-based wargames, but it still looks nice and modern. I think I'm going to have many happy hours with this game. :)
|
I really enjoyed the demo (being a fan of Fantasy General, hard not too -- on a sad note, I still have the disks but it doesn't run on XP).
However, based on the inevitable comparisons w/ FG, I have some gameplay questions: 1) Does a player "accrue" an army throughout the campaign? The idea that how the results of one battle impacted the entire war experience was a great element in FG as well as the fear that experienced units would be lost forever really made me focus on maximizing results in a given campaign. (anything that eliminates Zerg as a successful tactic is good in my mind) 2) Does the hard difficulty level lead to a smarter AI (rather than just tougher/more AI units)? Admittedly, I have been lazy and only played normal so far; however, I would rate the AI as okay . . . (good -- ensured they finished an opponent bad -- could have made better use of archers and should have withdrawn from certain positions) 3) Do the maps and terrain vary enough to *require* mixed-unit tactics? One thing I loved about FG was the inability to use the same tactics as the campaign moved to different continents. The first continent could be won almost exclusively with Cavalry and Air units, while the jungle (2nd continent, iirc) required lots of heavy and light infantry. And of course, the final battles needed tons of artillery . . . Those questions aside, I am very happy to see a game developer breath some new life into the pure Turn-Based Strategy games, esp. since it is in my favorite genre -- fantasy. Llyad, command-in-chief of my own mind (barely) |
Here is some responses to your questions Llyad :
1) Yes! Your armies accumulate xp throughout the different battle, and at each step of the campagn ou have the choice to select which one you use in the battle and which one you keep in reserve. Moreover during battle you can call for reinforcement some units in reserve ;) it is a nice idea. 2) I can't answer you because I only played in normal mode. But I fear that, like the majority of the games, the hard mode is only a boosted ia unit mode. Hopefuly the ia is very correct in normal mode, and this cumulate to the difficulty of the campaign (very very well calibrated I think) give us a very good challenge! 3) A very big Yes! I don't remember if in the demo it is obvious but trust me, you will feel the necessity to well organize your unit with the terrain caracteristic very soon in the campaign :) I thank again the dev for this very very good game ;) (too bad that there is not yet a true skirmish mode, but I trust the dev to incorporate in via a patch very soon, pleaaaase) |
One more with congratulations here :D
I've come here to discuss another 1C game, Ascension To The Throne, and thanks to Kolorabi I've tried demo yesterday. YAY! :D Well balanced AI, even on normal I got only silver (mainly 'cause I wanted to visit as much place as possible xP), graphics, ideas, leveling system - everything is proper, nothing to complain. If I could ask for two more things it would be visible tech tree (unless perks are random, I'd like to see what perks I have to collect to get other, high-level perks), and also... The thing that drew me to Fantasy General that much, was a superb, fabulous unit pictures on info screen, You know, sketch-like. Eh, real work of art. Maybe, one day... Some talented mod... Eh, nevermind. Thank You for Your work and next week I'm buying this game! 8) :D P.S. Terrain dependable combat is what I looooove, it resembles Civilization IV, where all units and/or their perks were working like paper-scissors-stone, it brings whole new level of tactical challenge :) Sun-Tzu at his finest  P.P.S. @Llyad FG is fully playable on XP, You just have to install DosBox and You're all set ;) http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1 |

Rebirth of "General" Series - Comments and Questio
As a long time fan of Panzer General like games (including Fantasy General) would like to comment on the high quality of this game. The AI is decent, the paper-scissor-rock aspects well thought out. The plot and voiceovers pretty good as well. My requests:
-- Tech Tree- also would like this. maybe as a pdf on your site for now -- Modability -- hope you are supporting this well. Would be wonderful to see user based mods (maybe even a Panzer General or Star General some day). -- Graphics -- well this is unlikely but would love to see a less cartoony graphics style someday in spirit of art of LoTR movies for example. -- Manual - a bit thin Question: The eagle made available in 3rd scenario of human campaign is described as "lends support" to land based units. But I could see no game mechanic indicated. Does it in fact and if so in what way? |
I second for graphics, I did mention about perfect unit info screens in FG, You don't see funny hats or "painted soldier" style. One of 1C games, Ascension To The Throne has really nice unit graphics too, I really like that form of fantasy atmosphere. Manga Berserk could also provide some great insights in dark fantasy, from 5th-7th tome images are burning into one's brain  :D
Other my comments see above  P.S. And I really like simplicity of placing perk tree on a forum, not implemented into the game. Good idea! 8) |
When I try to start the Fantasy Wars Demo i get three errors in the eventlog (XP Servicepack 2)

HA!
I've got the game just now, and I've got manual as well. And You know, it's really nice to see game makers answering on the game's forum - bers looks like a main man there - multiplayer, animation programming, game mechanics, AI, boy oh boy... :D :D Thank You for Your time and for Your work :) Anyway, to the game, but first just one quick question - What the hell!? Why so little unit uprgades???? Like 2-3 per type and many of high-level can be seen in demo? Where are the Dragons? Eh, I hope that manual's content is just an example, and in game I'll find many, many upgrades during campaign, same as it was in Fantasy General... Or, I don't know, expansion pack maybe... xPPPPP  |

I'm loving it so far, and I really wish we got more games like this. Seems there's almost no room for intelligent strategy titles on the market any more, and that's a huge shame. Hopefully this one will do well and send a signal to the publishers out there, but they'll probably be too busy making mass market crap to notice. Rant over. ;) Anyway, thanks to the devs and publishers of this great game. |
I'm storming through main human campaign, and it's a great fun, especially that now I have more knowledge how to play after demo for the last three days xP
. Hey, Zamolxis, check this game, I assure that noone can actually like the Inquisition guy here, an arrogant *** Few things though - there are not that many upgrades/units as I'd expect, dwarves+elves are not separated, and I've found that enemy is strangely merciful to my units, I mean I attacked some unit with heavy losses, and neighbouring enemy unit instead finishing me off skips it's turn, mainly while garrisoning cities. I suppose logic dictates AI to preserve strenght, but really, it helps a lot to player. Nevermind, maybe later on it'll get harder. And where are dragons???? |
Can anyone explain the point of the gold/silver/bronze victory to me? What is the point of this in the full game?
I love strategic games like CIV, Master of Orion, Heroes of Might and Magic and such. Fantasy Wars seem interesting (I have played the demo a couple of times). Still i HATE timelimits in these kind of games. I want to plot out a path to victory by surviving/fighting until the bitter end. I do NOT want to be rushed to meet a time limit. If one wants the game to be harder, then throw in more enemies, dont put in an arbitrary time limit please. When I play, I will usually up the difficulty until I lose most of the time. The victories is then ten times sweeter :D So, can anyone with the full game tell me how this works in Fantasy Wars? |
Well there is only turns limit in the full version of the game. But this limit is presented not in all missions, there just some of them, where this limit is used. As for gold/silver/bronze, this is the rating that you get according to the amount of turns you made during the mission. In the demo version if you did'nt met the bronze level, you lose, but in the full version such feature isn't implemented.
Thank you for your question. |

Basically, to rush blood in Your veins (like playing chess online with 5m time limit  ) You have certain amount of turns to complete the scenario. Bronze will give You as much time as You like to deliberately strike Your foes and enjoy scenario to the full extent, but for the price of bonus. Gold can be achieved quite easily (even on hard), problem is the amount of map not-conquered. So if one is playing on hard and he'll finish whole campaign on Bronze I will never say he's lame - to survive whole series of battles, without substantial bonuses from gold - that's a true strategist spirit :!:
So for me clearing of the whole map is a priority, but with that in mind I'm lifting my challenge by trying to keep up to get silver (easily) or gold (BOY it's haaaaard  ). Sometimes I won't even lick my plate clean, and few enemies stay alive  Sorry for looong post  |
Just wanted to log in to say that I really like it, and that Fantasy wars is a fun and challenging game. :D
the undead would be nice for an add-on. 8) |
To Bad Mad
Thank you very much. It's pleasant to hear such words. Happy to work for you. |
Played through 6 missions on human campaing, nice game but weird unit balance.
Knights and heroes are godly top tier, heavy armor and charge means walking through poor orcs. Heroes tank a bit worse but seem to be able to die with no penalty except main hero. Ballista ranks second, especially after a couple levels with upgrades to 4 speed and 4 range meaning ability to tag anything 8 squares away with huge damage. Piercing armor also helps, not only that but it tanks better than archers too, likely wont survive cavalry charge but is fine after 3-4 hits from archers. Then rangers are pretty average damage and tanking, but have lots of nice bonuses, no retaliation, +4 in forest, fast with 5 speed and no water penalty (with proper levelups of course), harass status effect, fear effect. Great to take some unimportant 20coin village, tag orcs garisoning it for 3-4 damage, repeat 2-3 times till they run away, go in and run to next village, not so great in big fights. Then there's archers, which are inferior to ballista in every way though i guess I'd keep a couple in army because there seem to be 3-4 orc bombers on every map. Yes, they can cower other units on computer turn but with that low damage it doesn't make much difference. Only 2 range and low tanking means fast death, good thing computer AI goes gentle on them, usually doesnt target them if you dont leave them alone out in the open. Infantry, ugh, pikemen/yeomen are like weaker and slower rangers and retaliation means they become unusable after 2-3 fights, halberdiers seem to be meant against cavalry but 3 speed! Swordsmen are just plain lousy and orc infantry doesnt seem too impressive either. Air units, both human and orc, just horrible. Description says to finish weakened units but they're bad even at that :) I'd take a real unit in that slot. Maybe elven faction's dragons are good. AI could be better too, plays much too defensive, for example almost always garisons towns even when its not benefitial for it, makes some bad mistakes like stepping into river sometimes, but at least seems better than most games. Another weird thing, between fights all units get restored to full for free. Wounded I can understand, but I'd expect to pay for new recruits. |
Hehe, I see that it all down to personal style... Halberdiers ROCK. Give them some river-walking artifact or few bonuses and they cut through horses (shielding from cavalry by negate charge, seriously, I don't know why swordsmen are able where one can get Halberdiers ;)), and upgraded Archers can cause auto-suicide-attack of an AI, when one have archer and flyer protecting attacked unit.
Cavalry is nice, but situational, I'm fond of light cavalry though :) It all depends on Your style mate I say  But it must be said - AI is way overprotective, and sometimes my soft units can survive thanks to that. Some agressiveness bonus please for the patch :D EDIT Quote:
Anyway, I simply like this game  :P |
Well, I guess it depeds on one's tactics. 90% of my army consisted of rangers and archers. I didn't use infantry at all. Put rnagers on the hill or forest, back up by archers - very often enemy unit will be killed at once while attacking. As for Ballistas - actually an ugraded archer unit kills a ballista with one attack easily.

Thoughts on the Game:
I love the game. I loved the panzer general series, having played pg1, pg2, and people's general all the way through the entire campaign, often more than once. I'ved also played ag and fg, though not the entire way through. I do love wargames of all different sorts though, having played through most of the close combat series to completion. I also played king's bounty back in the day (though never got into the later homm). So fantasy wars really fit into a fantasy wargaming niche for me. That being said, I'm a fairly broad gamer, having put in a year altogether in 3 different mmorpgs, playing in clan fps competitively (paradigm shift hehe, we own battlefield, I'm retired now though), as well as enjoying rts and games like moo...so quite a variety lol. I've played through the entire Orc Campaign on hard (getting mostly golds, a few silvers, and 2 bronzes)...Yes it took some time to figure out what units worked, more on this later. I'm about halfway through the Human Campaign on hard. Thoughts on Orc Units: I was having problems dealing with hard as you need to maintain your experienced units. This often means having resilient (defense or escape ability) units else when half of your force is green for a new late campaign mission you are screwed or in save-reload city for every turn of the battle. However, I found that Battle Orcs are a perfect mainstay unit. Get them shooting protection at lvl 1 and cavalry protection at lvl 2 and they are beasts. Trolls work too but they get shooting protection at lvl 5 and are vunerable to the slayer perk. Battle Orcs are cheap, so get tons of them up and running before encountering hordes of human cavalry later on. I also found Goblin Bombardiers (forgot the name) are awesome. Great for softening up any unit. At lvl 2 they get shooting protection and can be used to kill archer units. When you eventually get pteradon riders you also will want to use these. So basically, an elite force of battle orcs, with 2xbombadiers, 2xpteradons, and of course elite heros carried the Orc Hard Campaign Day [Be sure to item stack your units, not your heros]. You don't really need archers, since you have your hexars and your airforce to take care of that stuff. You don't really need skirmishers since your air can scout. Your orcs move slow on weird terrain, but the main threat of the humans come from the cavalry, so it was usually worse for the human cavarly than it was for me to deal with a difficult terrian map...And Battle orcs' hard target ability makes skirmishers kind of bounce off. Thoughts on the Human Campaign: I'm still trying to find a nice mainstay core. However, he sky rider or eagles are awesome for the same reasons you want an orc airforce -- projection power, they can kill archers in pairs or kill units on rivers. It seems that humans favor cavalry, but I think it will require much more unit mixing than orcs because you still have to deal with taking cities and cavalry is poor for that. Thoughts on the Game: Great game. However, a few of the units could be tweaked. My perspective may be skewed since I started playing the game on hard and only really extensive studied orc units, but the costs/stats on some of the unit types needs to be tweaked...for example while skirmishers are great, they are too fragile imho when you just can just use air instead. Maybe bump them up to 15 strength for the foot skirmishers. Or perhaps this is an issue that detecting invis is too easy between all the abilities/artifacts/air scouting and distances involved. Also, light infantry did not seem to have that much of a role except to move faster through bad terrain, and as such it seemed a bit overpriced for only that ability (or perhaps keep the price the same but add many of the skirmisher abilies sans the skirmisher attack). I also particularly disliked the fact that activating some of the unit abilities (not spells) precluded an attack that turn...yet it would stay in effect till next turn allowing for an attack w/ the ability...it would be better if it lasted only one turn but allowed for an attack. I'll also second what others have said about the AI. It could be better. I didn't notice anything exceptionally bad tactically, but it would play poorly strategically. I noticed that groups of enemies on the map would only activate once they saw my units, so maybe its something to do with this. This was exceptionally noticeable on hard as hard has like 30+ units you destroy in the later mission...and usually you did it with less than 5 losses of your own...that in itself probably says something could get better with the AI. But compared to other hex based war games, its not bad at all...but this could be related to the strategic activiation problem I mentioned above. However, I especially enjoy the cutscenes, the plot, and the varied objectives. Compared to all of the above mentioned wargames, these definitely take the cake! But in any case, can't wait till I get to the Allied Campaign! |
Funny - I thought that Skirmishers are way too powerful. A level 5 skirmisher in good terran (forest, swamp) can kill pretty much anything. Also they are great for softening up targets. Couple attackes and the most powerful enemy unit is yours. All those fear and bad morale perks rule.
|

See? Everyone has his own approach, boy what a game!  :D :D I like skirmishers (rangers) very much as well 8) So, when we're doing some skirmish? P.S. I can already feel cold, abysmal lack of map editor, maps, campaigns... Guys, I know that King's Bounty is on it's way but Fantasy Wars is a really gooood game - more! More! |
My problem with skirmishers is that they just die so easily once detected to spells, ranged, air bombardment and concentrated attacks. Terrain helps, but their defense isn't that high compared to heavy infantry or cavalry types to begin with.
At least on hard, it's quite an effort to get any unit to lvl 5 unless it is very survivable, and I find if you use skirmishers to soften enemy they are often close enough that the enemy units can often accidentally see them, focus on them, and destroy them early on before lvl 5. It's a similar problem with all 10 str units such as cavalry, heros and air units. However, cavalry are hard targets so they are harder to destroy, heros come back the next mission, and air units early on can be used away from frontline combat much more easily due to increased movement and ignoring land area control until they gain more experience. Also air units are harder to gang up on since fewer units can assault them. That being said, maybe human rangers are much better than goblin equivalents. And even with goblin sneakers it was crazy fun to see an enemy unit get ambushed and decimated :) |
Six it sounds like you where useing them as frontline troops.
You should be useing them to hit, then move behind your frontline and as such they dont get hit back. |
Yeah… you can find alot of good troops mixes in this game. I like to advance with 2 or 3 foot nights with a royal archer with multiple support as a covering unit, The orcs would just smash themselves against it and get decimated.
And foot nights are excellent for urban warfare. My level 5 foot nights in a castle are rated at 31 melee, and 30 defense. 8) I also have 2 rangers that are fun too use with the hit and run tactic. The war eagle helps out also. Almost forgot mass heal is a life & timesaver. |

Great Game
As a lover of General series I love this game too. Congrats.
Now some suggestions: - PBEM mode for multiplayer. Since a lot of us don´t have much time for play multi, play by email is very usefull and funny. This mode is implemented in most of turn based games. I hope you think about this. - Map editor, I know it is a nobilis decision but I would be great for a longer game playability. Really a great and very addictive game which updates the turn based games specially good for nostalgics of board games without enough space at home or without enough friends to play :D Regards |
Im surprise PBEM is not in the game. :?

Just finished Human and Orc campaigns on Hard (luckily I had week off work to relax, otherwise it wouldn't be that fast xPP), and I'm mentally preparing for The Elves :D
Most scenarios on gold, with reloading though (I mean reloading last turn to correct some foolish moves), but it was HARD anyway. With humans at the beginning, with orcs at the very end (those who played propably know why  ). I had some silvers because I couldn't refuse collecting those walking exp and gold from villages  Game is AWESOME, it makes You read all unit and perks description(getting excited:D), and follow the plot like reading some fantasy book(getting even more excited:D). Not only game is good strategically (I know that AI is passive but if it wouln't be in some scenarios I'd got crushed like a bug :P, so I'm ok with it :P ), but it creates great story, and keeps player's attention to the extreme! ..One thing. Orc Bull Riders. I know that they look sorta like bull, but to me they are more like a boars, especially size-wise. I mean, hyena riders have bigger mounts than these guys! I thought that bulls for these soldiers have to be extraordinary, huge beasts, not old, sick and cripple, rejected by their tribe   So either rename them Boar Riders (which is cool, why not?), or enlarge those bulls please, ok? Nice, enough of this typing, I have brand new campaign to play, so let's do it  8) 8) P.S. Game is great, thank You 1C and pleeeeaaase don't leave it alone! Make expansion packs, new races (or same races with more units), random map generator and I'm gonna buy it all, every version, and I'll send You a postcard with best wishes on top of that :D  |
Thank you for your words. We're working on theexpansion pack and the sequel. We'll inform you about the development, so stay tuned.

Evgeny, do you know if we can hope that things like a map editor and a skirmish mode could be integrated in game though a patch? From my point of vue the translation of an existing map editor (I read here that a russian one already exist) and the addition of skirmich mode do not justify by theirself a sequel (to few content). Please, tell us that this features will be integrated in game thought a patch, pleeeease! Thank you guys for your reactivity, it is so pleasant to see developpers actively supporting their games ;) PS : I repeat, give us the tools and the community will do the work! :D |
Roughly (eg, late 2009, early 2011) when can we expect the xpansion/sequel? And what will they contain?
|
I second to Daystar, and Elmereth, I think that map editor, new maps and random map generator of course xP, will be released as an expansion pack, and later on there will be a sequel. So it's good to know that next part of Fantasy Wars (heh, I wonder if our kids will be using FW shortcut in the same way as we use FG for Fantasy General  ) is on it's way, Disciples 2 was much, much better than first part :D
WE. WANT. MORE. Thank You 1C P.S. I think I'll change my sig on "hungry for more" |
Well, guys, thank you for the appreciation. I'll post all the news concerning the sequel and the expansion pack, but a bit later.
|
Just finished the third campaign, and have enjoyed all of them thoroughly. I especially liked the way the campaigns were joined together at the end. I cannot think of any serious flaws in the game design, and I look forward to the expansion and sequel.
Minor improvement would be the ability to also level normal units up to 10, as many of mine (I could not let any die...) soon reached 5. This would balance the strength of heroes in the endgame, as they become an order magnitude more powerful than anything else. |
I have to say it has been a long time since i played something this good and addictive,i just can't stop playing since i bought it.Excelent campaign, beautiful graphics, nice music and absolutely amazing game overall!!!!
Guys from 1C : Incredible job!!! have to say this is one of the best strategy game i ever played and i really can't wait for expansion. i just finished human and orc campaign and on my way for second mission with elves. It rarely happens that i get so exited about a game and i wish to thank u for it. it may seem like a stupid post but i really had to say it:D good luck with your next projects. |

Will there be any new factions? like full elven or full dwarven?
or something like demonic army from last mission? I see u are adding new units it would be nice to add some more elvish and dwarven troops |
Well, I can't tell you such information now. If i get anything new i'll inform you as soon as possible. Thank you for your questions.

I am a gamer from the stone age. Remember c 64 and amiga?
Anyway, bought this game friday, and played all through the weekend. Lovely game. I have missed a good turn based stategy game for a long time. For me the gameplay is the most important thing, and you have done a real good job. Keep up the good fight |
Loving the game so far, my only gripes would be:
1) The in-game sound is a bit anemic and could use a more punch. Sound balancing is an issue (why does the hexer blowgun make more noise than a cavalry charge?) And I have the sound effects turned all the way up and my speakers cranked so I can hear, so whenever a cutscene triggers I'm nearly blown out of my seat by the volume. 2) On snowy maps it can be very difficult to see which units have attacked. The little sword attack marker gets lost in the snowy background. Other than these minor quibbles I am thoroughly enjoying myself. The game forces you to make some interesting decisions, which is the most important aspect. Thanks for making it HARD! |
Love the game, this is the game Mark Of Chaos should have been. Only small gripe i have is that it lacks grit and character. 9/10 A classic.
|
Great game!
The A.I. in the game is not bad.
I love the way it targets your routed/damaged units for destruction, and whoa be the player that has a routed hero hanging out in the open. I also like the way that you have to keep your mounted knights back a bit so they don't go impetuously crashing to their doom into the woods after an orc unit. I give it 9 out of 10 :) |
Excellent game. I used to play Fantasy General to death and now this game gives me what I have been aching for.
I was surprised to see the AI making smart moves and how little loading there is. Furthermore, the game is a nice challenge, something to sink my teeth in. It's technically sound as well. What I am missing at the moment is simply more maps. And a techtree for the Elves on the site ;) What's holding the game back is that it looks like another Warcraft/Warhammer clone and gamesites do not go deep with it. Personally, I like Orcs and Elves battling it out, but that's me. Also, I think in the age of Halo's and generic racegames, old school turnbased doesnt get the attention it deserves. I believe that if you call yourself oldschool, this game is a must-have. |
I personally miss a campaign map as the Total War series,
with the old school gameplay and a quest sistem will be really a revolution in the strategy games |
Nah I don't miss it. That would make it too commercial :P
Besides, a campaign map like Total War doesn't make a good game, just look at Empire Earth 3... |
Funny, because I was just thinking how great it was that I didn't have to bother with a Total War-style campaign map. I love how Fantasy Wars focuses directly on the tactical combat.
|
Yes but it would be great to take decision about were to fight enemies and about the composition of the forces.
|
I agree that a campaign map would be a nice addition. But not like the one in Total War. Rather like the map in "Shadow of the Horned Rat" - you make the decision between options A, B and sometimes C, and the campaign continues depending on your choice. You also would get different units, quests and so on... yes, it would triple the effort needed to create a campaign, but it would be so nice... :)
|
i prefer to be free to accept or not casual quests only with a customizable hero, to develop my troops and cityes, to choose who and were to attack in a totally free world domination campaign.

Ah, but I still have to wait for the first edition to appear on the Polish market :( I don't know, what is taking them so long... they're speaking "maybe in March"! :( And when I looked into the possibility of buing the game in the UK, the game+shipping would cost 3 or 4 times the current shelf price of Spellforce 2 Gold ;) OK, just ignore my babbling ;) Any other "hints" about the sequel? |

According to some Russian websites that have it already, it is called Elven Legacy and has a full elven campaign with many different elven units. Apparently there are some undead units or an undead faction or something also.
As for buying the game...are you unwilling to purchase it for download from www.gamersgate.com ? That's your best bet. |

Or... maybe someone knows a shop (or ebayer for that matter), who accepts MoneyBookers? |

I've only recently started playing this game, having held off for a while. I picked this and HoMM: Tribes of the East at the same time, and I've been focusing all my free time on this game. It is certainly one enjoyable game, with that "just one more mission" aspect. Thanx for such a great game!
|
I bought this game last week and I must say I enjoy the game immensily.
This is the kind of game I like the most : Strategy - Tactics - turn based - fantasy. For reference : other favorites of mine include : Age of Wonders : Shadow Magic - Dominions 3 - Civ4 I have, but don't like Homm5 because there's no AI at all. Also, the battle system in FW and AoW:SM stands head an d shoulders above the combat mechanics in HoMM. I really hope there are going to be add-ons with some additional races : Elves - Dark Elves - Undead - Dwarves are a must IMO. AoW:SM has a nice set of different races to choose from. I'd like to see this in this game as well. It would be nice to have campaigns for each of those races against each other ( like Undead campain vs Elves for instance and vice versa) Would it be possible to have a certain campaign in place but with races to be decided at "player's choice" or maybe "at random" ? That would be great. |

Found two stores that have Fantasy Wars and accept MoneyBookers... one from Thailand and the other from Malaysia  An easy way of losing money, for sure ;) |
Very neat game this, I'm looking forward to the expansions and hope for more races and units. The editor is also fun to mess around with, it's a lot better than the rough dev tools you usually get with similar games. And I like that you can click a button and play the map you are working on right away.
Btw, I found the game very cheap at cdwow. £10 shipping included. :o http://www13.cd-wow.com/detail_resul...2381&subcat=pc |
After playing the demo for a while I found a new copy of FW on ebay for about half the list price, it should be here in a week or so. I'm looking forward to making maps for this game.
I wonder if they will add Undead as a race for this game? |
Good game, but...
Hi,
I'm enjoying Fantasy Wars, not yet through the full campaign. There is a lot to like wih this game. I love the turn-based model. Like many others I really enjoyed the Panzer General series of games from SSI. It is great to see this genre revisited. I really like the game play, and find winning very challanging. The variety of units is ample, and I will be excited to see what any extention or expansions bring. So my applasue for what you have done. Nonetheless, I do have some observations. I offer them in the spirit of constructive advice. Of course, feel free to ignore! The Human campaign is quite good. I thought the cut scenes ok. But with the Orc campaign I felt like the game got sort of juvenile. The voice characterization of the hexer was silly, and the entire race seemed more cartoony than the Human campaign. I was relieved when I finished that portion of the game. I have not finished the Elf campaign yet, but the scantily clad female elf is just stupid. Our men at arms wear extra chain mail, but the one female charcter in the game has a bare midriff? I suppose some on this forum will be offended that I have posted criticism of the game. I'm sorry if I antagonize anyone. I never had these reactions to any of the older SSI games. IMO, those games felt more adult; while Fantasy Wars feels more juvenile. Personally, I hope you revisit the battlefields of WW2, or other military scenarios that this sort of combat game is well suited to. Fantasy Wars is a good military game encumbered with a so-so storyline. Thanks for reading this. Kevin |
Graphics - Love them... very impressive for a turn based strategy game :-P
Game Play - Sweetness, easy to use interface and loads of detail for each unit MapMaker - Love it... it could be a but more user friendly but if you keep at it, eventually you learn enough to be proficient. Multiplayer - This is what I love most about the game, it is why I play it. It needs more maps with customizable forces, a lobby would not hurt either... but I know that is not a priority. I am hooked and will continue to "word of mouth" this game as long as I stay hooked :) Noone seems to know about it, or even heard of it... My overall rating for Fantasy Wars is a 9.0 of 10.0 in the turn based strategy game catagory. Next in line is Laser Squad Nemesis... with an 8.0, multiplayer goodness :) |
I have just completed the Alliance campaign. I must say that I have really enjoyed the game. It was a real brainteaser in some scenarios, yet it was not too difficult (I was playing on Normal). Great job at balancing this! Although some scenarios were far easier (I have found the Human campaing the easiest and the Orcish campaing the most difficult one). I know it is not easy to make a balanced game that will not be easy to finish in one night and at the same time not too difficult, so that many players would not be able to finish the game.
So... when's the English add-on coming out? ;) Oh! And an extra "cheers!" for the guy that gave Teya the "Dragonslave" spell as a perk on level 10 :D I did not have the opportunity to use it (she has reached level 10 on the turn Farrakh died), but hey, it's nice to see some references to the movies :) Oh, and one more thing. When a new unit joins the army during a scenario, please allow it to move (maybe fix this in the add-on?). In the mission with the Engineer I had to reload a previous save several times, because the Engineer kept appearing next to enemy units, with no move points, and was repeatedly being decimated by the goblin raiders. |
Love the game , just bought 2 days ago and really enjoy it!!
Would like to see in the next patch , a fix to needing to insert the dvd in the drive everytime you wish to play. Yes i own a dvd version :) |
I am really enjoying it...I did a quick tiny review on another forum:http://madcowssteakhouse.com/viewtopic.php?t=19866
great game I am eagerly awaiting add ons etc.:) thanks to the designers... well done:cool: |
I would still like to say that its a great game!!
One single feature that i would really like to see implemented in the next patch , is the ability to play by email. I really believe a pbem option is really needed for a turn based game. |
we need a multiplayer lobby online supported by the developer
|
Something of a late-comer, but might as well say my piece. I think Fantasy Wars is a terrific game... although I must confess to being a sucker for turn-based stuff, particularly that where you can complete a game/scenario in an evening rather than a month (also playing a lot of Armageddon Empires at present for the same reason). Very reminiscent of games like Panzer and Fantasy General in that it's basically a simple to learn (but hard to master, as they say) turn based wargame with no pretensions of being much else. Add that solid gameplay to some pretty 3D graphics and well designed campaigns and you have a very solid package indeed.
Looking forward first to the editor when the promised 'common version' patch appears and, hopefully, to an English release of the add-on in due course. |
There is an add-on???
PLEASE release it in English!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise - great game! LOVE Turn-Based games and you simply do not see enough of them anymore (I can't stand RTS). However, I seem to not be as good as others in that I still (after 5 or 6 tries) can't make it through the very first Single Player mission. :( |
