Newbie needs some answers please
Newbie here, but been playing IL2:1946 for over a year now and still love it.
Favourite aircraft are I16 Typ24 for manouverability and clear vision, being an open cockpit, Me262 (all marques) for speed and firepower, although it does suck as a jabo (What was Adolf thinking?) He162C, because its so simple, versatile and effective and similarly the Do335 V13, whether shredding bombers or ground attack, it's awesome. Anyway, why am I posting? I don't think I'm getting the best out of my PC setup. I'm running a 6GB, i7 processor machine that is pretty much top notch currently, although my gfx card is the upper end of mid range (ATi Radeon 5570 1024mb) I don't think the gfx card is holding me back though. My monitor is 1920x1080 16:9 HD I'm still running V4.07m as shipped on CD-ROM. So here is a number of questions. 1. Whilst IL2 is a few years old now, what is the maximum res I can get? Currently the best seems to 1280x960x32, DirectX, Stencil Buffering on. Will a new(er) patch allow me to tweak it any higher and make full use of my monitors highest res? 2.Where can I download the patches? 3. How do I install the patches? 4. Do I have to install them in order, ie; 4.08 then .09, .10 etc? 5. Will the splash screen on launch update, and show what version I'm running? 6. My mission editor does not work. I've looked at the tutorials on other sites and followed them carefully but it seems that certain fields and options are simply missing, so I can't progress. Will update the version with patches cure this? RSVP Reggie |

I've got a problem too. I own Pacific Fighters and recenetly got a new computer(i7 930.... bla bla bla...). But i can't install PF because Windows 7 doesn't recognize it. Any possible ideas how to fix the problem?

Fruitbat, thanks for your reply and it looks sound. I have changed the conf.ini just as you told me (I put my max res 1920x1080) and changed to OpenGL.
But 1920x1080 does not show up in the video menus, neither does the PERFECT setting in any other video modes. Any attempt to set a higher res simply defaults back to 1280x960x32. I can't get it higher! I have not installed any patches yet, as the site has just crashed. I did manage to get one Hakenkreuz file to down load swastikas, but bloody windows will not let me install it as it 'might harm my computer' The folder and .exe are installed but the 0.hc through 4.hc files are rejected. I have restarted my computer too. No joy. Looking at the root file structure, its a bit messy, as I loaded 1946 over my Forgotten battles title. Shall I uninstall it all and start again re-installing only 1946? (I checked the conf.ini in both root files, and they are the same. It seems one updates the other.) Any advice? Flanker, As for old software 1946 is XP! I ran it okay on vista (with some issues) but Win7 is backwards compatible. Right click on the icon in your desk top and select troubleshoot compatability. Worked for me |
Oh fruitbat, its a 64 bit machine.
Should 'ColourBits=32' be changed to 'ColourBits=64' ? |

The missing link here is to do with changes to the conf.ini file. Once you have set up your screen resolution in conf, accessing the in-game menu will cause the res setting to revert to the previous setting. You need to get all the setting up done before you edit the conf file, and/ or learn to set up everything by this form of manual editing. S! B |
Sorry I don't get it. Do you mean run the game in its current setup, then minimize it and edit the conf file?
When I look at the conf file, it is showing a higher res, ie; 1920x1080. The game is unaffected/no improvement. |
As Brando says.
i've not used the il2 setup program for over 6 years, all it does is change the setting in the conf.ini via a gui. I just manually change them in the conf.ini. re running the il2setup knocks out any custom res changes you've made. there are also many settings that you can only change via the conf.ini, and not through the setup. set to opengl with the il2setup with stencil buffer on, then don't use it anymore. then change the stuff in the conf.ini and save, and then start the game, and viola., res changed. you won't get the widescreen till your flying, GUI will still be in 4:3. to get perfect mode, in the game then go to hardware settings, select custom, and under landscape select perfect to get perfect mode. Also as brando says, do NOT change to 64bit (i to have a 64 bit system) I've just checked M4T and its up, that link i gave you takes you straight to the patch download page if your logged in. for the record, il2 runs fine on vista with no issues, i'm running vista64. |

Then launch the Il2FB executable as administrator. This would solve your issue. Cheers, 6S.Insuber |
Hi lads!
I have a question too. I always take "Torpedo failed to entry water" (or something like it), when I try to use my torpedo. That thing is annoying me, I feel like a stupid pilot? Whats my problem? Why it can't "enter" the water? I'm flying low, sometimes really low and slow. But it always give me that error :( It says" torpedo broken while entering in water" when i touch the water, i even try this. Please help me. Note: This error came with 4.10 :( |

Found perfect landscape option, but it isnt perfect at all. Black sky, no detail Game still running in 1280x etc; and no change. Should I see 1920x1080x32 come up in the selection of resolutions? Well, it still doesn't. The conf files have been edited and both show 1920x1080. The game still luanches in 1280. The user screens are devoid of any lettering and are just squares, but they co0me back when I drop the landscape to Excellent from perfect. I've restarted the PC. Lauched the game. No change to res. Still 1280. I'm beginning to think a complete uninstall followed by a re-install is the only way forward. |

re the perfect mode stuff, its an ati issue. i'm nvidia so not my expertise. as suggested use the search, its a well known problem and can be fixed.
re the resolution, no you will not see it in any menu, it willl just boot up in that res, once you've changed the conf.ini and started the game. Thats it, no further action is necessary. do not change the res in game, do not use the il2 setup after the conf.ini changes. [window] width=1920 height=1200 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=1 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=0 EnableClose=1 SaveAspect=0 Use3Renders=0 make sure ChangeScreenRes=1, in fact just copy all those settings, with your res. |
Ah....
Yours : SaveAspect=0 mine : SaveAspect=1 Will try that now everything else is the same. |

nah.. That didn't work. Sod it...
Flanker gave an answer on another thread. I'll wait and see if it works. I've posted asking if it worked. |
Quote:
if so change it. are the changes sticking in your conf.ini? there is no other reason why this won't work. write back exactly what you've done. |
This can happen in Windows Vista or Windows 7 if you install to program files directory, because of UAC you need "administrator permission" to modify anything in the Il2 directory, in Vista its a PITA, you must run IL2 "as an administrator" all the time. This caused me headaches (none of my config.ini changes where used by the sim) until I re-installed Il2 in my personal User folder which has no restrictions on access.
|
Conf.ini is not write protected. Changes have stuck, and are still changed. Makes no difference to the game.

I am using Track IR5 too. Does this impose any limitations on res?
And to be sure we are all talking about the same thing, the screen is full, not distorted etc, no black bars either side, but the detail is fairly poor considering my spec and what I've seen on less tricked up PCs. Is it my Gfx card after all? Should I change to an nVidia perhaps? |
@Reggie:
Do you go to the game's setup screen to check the resolution? If I remember correctly, it will NOT tell you the real resolution as it does not support so high settings. Visually determine (or check from your monitor settings) the new resolution. When you edit the conf.ini the IL-2 must NOT be launched. The new settings will become active the next time you launch the game. No need to go to any setup screen. And: I recently had a ATI card (Radeon X1900 XT) and all was well with it. -Untamo |
Maybe a stupid question but do you have the latest drivers for your GFX card?
A complete uninstall and reinstall is rarely needed. I've never done it anyway. But really do upgrade to 4.10 if you haven't done so. The ATI card is fine btw. |

track ir does not affect anything you have applied antialiasing in your gfx card settings right, that considerably sharpens the image. i'm using 16xQ aa. also, set TexMipFilter=2 to 3 in the conf.ini, this will give you ansiotropic filtering also, your HardwareShaders=0 should be 1 without aa, http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...rab0001-21.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...rab0000-25.jpg with, http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...rab0000a-2.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...rab0001a-1.jpg |
So close to being there man. If this is what you do have in your conf:
[window] width=1920 height=1080 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=1 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=0 <---Change that to 1, or else,...you can't resize. EnableClose=1 SaveAspect=0 Use3Renders=0 Hope that helps, and good luck. |

Getting there. Gotta go and do some boring stuff in RealWorld v1.0 and will apply changes to conf.ini tonight.
Cheers all. |
