1C and Ubisoft Announce IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover

World famous IL-2 Sturmovik series of flight simulators roars over Britain. 1C Company and Ubisoft announced that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover (for PC) will take off in March 2011.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover is the latest instalment in the acclaimed IL-2 Sturmovik series from award-winning developer 1C: Maddox Games.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover takes place in 1940 during the pivotal aerial battle for the skies over Britain between the British, the German and the Italian air forces.
Key Features:
  • New aircraft: incredibly detailed true-to-life modeling of aircraft systems based on thousands of hours of dedicated research. Every single aircraft component can be damaged for realistic and immensely satisfying results.
    1. Flyable aircraft – Over a dozen famous and highly detailed English, German and Italian aircraft available, with all crew positions open to players. All flyable aircraft have been painstakingly researched, resulting in incredibly accurate cockpit interiors (including Spitfire, Hurricane, Messerschmitt and the Stuka).
    2. Non-flyable aircraft – 13 AI controlled additional aircraft are also available to allow an even more accurate and immersive experience thanks to a varied aircraft.
  • Immersive game modes:
    1. Exciting Single-Player Campaign – The campaign thrusts the player into the middle of the battle. The player will join the British Air Force to fight the German forces and renegade pilots on his own side, or join the German Luftwaffe and take part in meticulously recreated historical battles.
    2. Massive multiplayer – Customizable modes range from simple deathmatch-style free-for-alls to epic, ongoing 128 player battles that can last hours, days, weeks, or even longer.
    3. Interactive training – Comprehensive interactive training for new players – fly a real WWII trainer plane with a computer controlled instructor through a series of training missions.
  • Brand new setting – The battle will take place on a large area spanning London and southern England in the north, to Northern France and Belgium in the south. The huge map will contain thousands of historical cities, towns, roads, airfields, radar stations, ports, and industrial areas – all located exactly where they were in 1940.
  • New 3D engine – Latest-gen graphics engine with DX10 and DX11 API support. Huge variety of photorealistic ground vehicles, buildings and other environmental elements recreate minute details of 1940s Europe.
  • Customizable difficulty – dozens of realism options allow newcomers to the franchise to reduce the difficulty and focus on the fun while learning the ropes of being a pilot.

1C and Ubisoft also announced that IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover will be available in a special Collector’s Edition, along-side the standalone version.
This Collector’s Edition features the following collection of exclusive pilot material assets in a premium packaging:
  • The Windows PC version of IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover
  • A cloth pilot escape map showing The Battle of Britain strategic locations
  • A replica of the Pilot’s Notes on the Spitfire I Aeroplane, provided to RAF pilots during The Battle of Britain and reprinted from the RAF Museum original document
  • An in-depth 150-page ring binder pilot instructions

What no German Campaign? That is not going to go well on the German market, but lets wait and see.

Looking forward.

Awesome but I hope it won't use Ubisoft's annoying DRM. I don't want to be on the internet everytime while playing the game. I know it is early to speak but can you give us an official response for it will use Ubisoft DRM or not? Thanks.

Zorin 01-18-2011 03:24 PM

Nothing new... Only that we now know for a fact that there will be no German or Italian campaign, German trainer or German collector's box edition.

Somehow I do believe that that is a stupid decision. The guy in the store won't know that there is eventually a German campaign when it is not written on the box. Let alone that I am sure that you would sell more if you offered a German collector's box. A good number of people are drawn to the "evil" side of WWII. Oh well... It is Ubisoft through and through...

T}{OR 01-18-2011 03:25 PM

So the rumors were true - no Luftwaffe campaign eh?

Still, I can't wait! :D

EDIT: Since creating a Luftwaffe campaign would most definitely involve creating a bomber campaign as well (most likely a formation training missions too), I would rather have a solid RAF campaign alone than rushed & unfinished game. If this was the decision Oleg, made I think it is a good one. Much better to include a proper campaign later on via patch or possibly add-on.

If on the other hand we get to pay for LW campaign - this presents a slightly different approach than the RoF, but on the other hand a very similar one. ;)

Quite frankly that sounds very strange, not to say it sounds like fried BS but it's close. Not only that a german campaign branch is missing (for the time being?) but that "renegade pilots" thingy sounds a lot more gamey than I'm comfortable with. But then I'm a stickler for historical accuracy ...

Yes you could almost think they wish for customers only from the English speaking countries.....and that everyone is keen on flying a dweebfire.
We will see what happens.

Really? Had a publisher already announced the date?

That would be nice, but they didn't need to offer a collector's box at all - so they offer one, and you complain that they don't offer two.

A lot of us have been posting that we'd like the game to be released asap - some wanted it now, with whatever bugs it has. If we're getting it in March without a German campaign (that surely has to come later) or later with both, the feeling I get from the forum is that most would take it in March.

I think its weak to see so many people whining about insignificant things, now when we're finally getting the game after years and years of waiting people find new things to complain about..
I can't wait be it without a German campaign at launch or not , i couldnt care less. About the name of the game itself and the tagline, its really irrelevant.. we all know its a simulator of the
highest degree and a PC exclusive, just drop it already and enjoy the news will ya?

csThor 01-18-2011 03:57 PM

zauii ... Everybody has different ideas how he wants to spend his time with the Sim. If there we´re no german campaign my main reason for playing flightsims would be gone so why should I bother with such a game? Just having it for the sake of having it would not give me a decent reason to actually play it ...

Dano 01-18-2011 03:57 PM

You'll never please everybody, if I was Oleg I'd make sure everybody has to tie their forum account to their activation and then force anybody who complained to fly around in Hello Kitty skins for a month or two ;)

seeing that the Ju88 has both bombbaydoors open (to improve range, the forward one was most times used to carry an additional fueltank), i conat wait to see the armament option screen of CoD................

Indeed, sounds more like Crimson Skies, but since the "French chick" pics from Igromir I was more or less expecting that ;) While my own interest in this kind of campaign is quite limited, I see two upsides here:

- This should go well with general review sites, who usually criticize most sims as too dry and not exciting enough.
- A dedicated single player campaign system is there, instead of generic and repetetive furball action as an appendix to online gameplay.

Thanks to Luthier for clearing up the German campaign situation; would have indeed been a major omission for obvious reasons.

Congrats to the team and I'm looking forward to March!

Was there nobody around to make something decent on a high end system? Even IL2 Youtube clips from years ago look better than this.
Amazing.

Good question.

I guess and hope that we will see more videos the closer we get to the date.

Rofl, no they don't.. its only the first scene which looks abit odd.. if you find anything in IL2 even remotely close to the later parts in the video i'll bow to you as my god, and i am atheist.
And besides, since when did the Sim community become graphic whores? There's just so much depth here when it comes to realism, that we dont know even where to begin..

nice :)

Thanks 1C. It's amazing that we are now so close to the release. I can only imagine the stress level there while trying to meet the final deadline.

Maybe we'll meet in the skies over London. Would be nice. It would give you a chance to flame me...... or any other of the forum posters here.

Folks, this is just the beginning. I'm looking forward to where IL2:CoD takes us with developer and 3rd party updates.

Congrats to everyone involved. May your work be rewarded. I also hope CoD and this new engine take you where you and the company want to go.

Great news! I see that the first page announcement now mentions the German campaign.

This is a bit cheeky - but lets think of absent friends - Tree must be sick as a parrot today - wrong on 3 big issues:

1. DX11 - confirmed.
2. Ubisoft as publisher - confirmed.
3. Release date - March - confirmed......Spring 2012 my arse!

------

Feb 11th - decided to revisit this piece of ancient history in the interests of fair play, justice, and a nagging guilty conscience :) - or maybe it's just masochistic self-indulgence? Probably I'm just bored. No-one's probably going to read it anyway - bit like a tabloid issuing the retraction to their front-page headline on page 34 in very small print....

Anyway, hindsight (which, as we all know, is a 'wonderful thing') has revealed Tree not to have been as wrong as I made out.

A re-evalution shows:

1. DX11 - Tree was right, though God knows how, when Ubi didn't even know? Lucky guess, esp?, or sleuth-like powers of deduction (or is it induction?).

2. Ubisoft as publisher - Wrong - debates about when they got involved not withstanding.

3. Release date - Wrong, though arguably only because the devs left out half the game :) [deliberate overstatement before anyone takes offense]. Arguably if DX11, dynamic weather and dynamic campaign had been included, we may not have seen the game to 2012.

So there you have it. Tune in next week to see me whip myself with stinging nettles...

Yeah, but that was for "Storm of War".... NOT "Cliffs of Dover." :D

Please Oleg or Luthier, could you clarify that "fight against renegade pilots" thing about the British campaign?
I´m sure it´s some kind of mistake, because doesn´t look like anything that Maddox games works before.
I mean, you always look compromised with historical accuracy and the way it´s written is really strange...
But what I really want to do is compliment Oleg , Luthier and all the staff for the years of hard work that finally are coming for
the end.
Years of good historical battles are coming for the community starting March 2011...
