Navigation-Noob needs help!

hey fellas!
now i play il2 for about 7 months, and i think im pretty good when its about flying and handle the aircraft. i never focused much on navigation yet, the only thing i did to navigate was to focus on compass and remember for how long i followed a certain heading. if i wanted to make it back, i just followed the opposite heading for the same time and then looked around for the airfield.most of the time it worked well.
but now there is a big improvement with 4.10 when its about navigation and i really want to use these new tools. but i just dont understand how to use them.i have read the readme, but as im not a native speaker its hard for me to understand it completely.
so as i already experienced, many members here are really helpful and experts when its about this sim and aviation in common.
so i would be really grateful if somebody could give me a navigation-guide for dummies.thx in adavance

Hi

TD did make a pre v4.10 development video with the navigation methods and useage in it.

You will have to trawl through the TD threads to find it though.

Edit >>

Found it hope it helps you.

hey KG26 Alpha!
thx for your quick reply!the video is kind of helpful!but there is still lack of knowledge!maybe im just too stupid!i already noticed that the compass-rose is now moveable.but i dont see the sense of it. for example if i fly with the bf-109G2 and i turn the compass-rose, then i dont know in which direction im heading anymore. i have read in the readme that the needle(the aircraft-symbole) shows the magnetic heading.but if i turn the rose, i loose the exact heading.i can only assume in which direction im flying as there are no more indicators which tell me exactly.i only can estimate the degrees.did i get something really wrong??so what sense does it make to turn the compass-rose?i hope everybody understands what im trying to say.
the other important question i have: is it possible to land without vision(night-landing) with planes like the bf-109???as there is no radio compass and no afn-gauges!??am i wrong?and there is only one channel i can listen to, but i dont understand the signals!!

In German planes use the aircraft symbol (or parallel lines in some American planes) in Repeater Compass to set you desired route (ie. HDG 320). So fly up to aircraft symbol in Repeater Compass pointed to upper (12 hrs). Now you are flying in HDG 320.
In American planes, fly up to compass needle stay between the parallel lines.

In other words use the functions (keys) "Compass Heading Plus" and "Compass Heading Minus" to pre-set in Repeater Compass your intended flying path.

When follows some Beacon (NDB) I use ADF to find general heading to this, and adjust the Repeater Compass for this path, since is more easy stay in course observing Repeater Compass indication than the small needle in ADf indication. Eventually some course corrections is need.

Note: In Arado 234 some bug dont display in "HUD" the course adjustment messages, so use degrees in instrument (RC) to adjust.

And remember that many airplanes in IL-2 doesn't have instruments for radio navigation.

I think no, since Bf-109 are a day fighter... Try the 4.10 mission "Night land" with Bf-110 G-2 to better understand the blind landing system. Or B-25 night land mission.

Read the excellent Blackdog kt post in this tread: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthr...t=17821&page=2

Happy (blind) flights. :)

hey sokol1!
thx for your answer.
if i understand it right, the aircraft symbol shows the magnetic heading, but if i turn the compass-rose, i can no longer read the exact heading,as its the only exact indicator.the only possibility which remains then, is the aircraft symbol which is only an approximate gauge for heading.i can still estimate that im heading south or north and so on,but the exact degrees i can no longer read, as i manipulated the rose!?i think i really got something wrong, but turning the compass rose makes still no sense for me. if i want to fly i.e. 320 and i turn the compass rose that 320 is at 12 o clock, doesnt make it really easier to follow the course. ??

The Bf-109 is compatible with the blind landing system and it works fine. The only deficiency vis-a-vis the 110 is that it doesn't have a radar altimeter but as long as you can get close enough to see the runway lights or get visual on the rwy then it works just fine.

Tested with the G-14.

David198502 01-09-2011 12:55 PM

ok and how you do that???the bfs have only one channel where anytime you can listen the same morse code.no matter in which direction you are from the source.its just a: two times short, one long and another short signal in a row, which keeps continuing the whole time.only if you fly directly over the radio-station then there is this rushing. but if you are not, then you dont have any idea where you are. and there is no afn-gauge!or did i miss something

David198502 01-09-2011 12:57 PM

how can i know in which direction my postion is from the radio station with this signal`?

Ian Boys 01-09-2011 01:35 PM

1) Bf109 DOES HAVE a pointer as described in the 410m documentation, but only the G6 and later versions.

2) Use the pointer on the AFN to point towards an NDB.

3) For landing, fly from a known point, like an NBD or a river junction you can identify at night and set a course towards your base. Only use the Lorenz landing beacon to line up for the final approach.

First off, let me give my deepest thanks and appreciation to TD for their outstanding addition to this already fantastic combat simulation. Please do not take this next comment as a criticism, but merely a suggestion.

The Morse code for the ZB Hay Rake is almost impossible to understand. The volume is very low, and the code comes very fast. As a professional pilot, I am very used to tuning into a VOR and identifying it by listening to the Morse code identifier, which comes over the radio much slower than this. I also realize that the way TD did theirs is probably exactly what it must have sounded like back then in RL. The problem is, most of us are not HAM radio operators or professionally trained to read Morse code. Is there a way to change the sound files for the Morse code to a louder and slower version??

David198502 01-09-2011 05:25 PM

hey guys!
now i think i learned the ropes, considering the lorenz landing system.i set up a night mission in fmb and it worked fine. but there is another question i have. i flew in slowakia and gave the airfield lights, but these are always visible.what do i have to do, that i can request the landing lights. i did, but nothing happened, may because there are already the ones i put on.do these landing lights only work on bigger concrete airfields,or on everyone?do i have to add them myself?if so,which one do i have to take.i found 4types in fmb,but i think they are lightening all the time.

Ian Boys 01-09-2011 06:52 PM

Razor: it isn't impossible. I've never used morse before but I've found the carrier loads of times now. It's just practice - you get used to it as it is in the game. I have a morse sheet in front of me and it works fine, even if I have to listen for a bit.

David: you need to assign the lights to your side (Red or Blue). If the lights are no side (white) then they stay on all the time. Try reading the 410m documentation again.

David198502 01-09-2011 07:08 PM

hey Ian Boys!
yes i just recognized that you can assign the side to the lights.but i tried it now for about 6times and they never light up after my request.although im in front of the airfield!dont know what im doing wrong

David198502 01-09-2011 07:10 PM

oh it worked one time.although i didnt do anything different.but the other six tries no lights appeared so i had to land without any vision.surprisingly it worked 4 of six times.

David198502 01-09-2011 07:12 PM

oh and i forgot to say that in this mission i put no enemies in it,so that cant be the reason for not showing up the lights

VT-51_Razor 01-09-2011 08:47 PM

Thanks Ian. I realize it's not impossible, just looking for a crutch I suppose LOL! I'll work on it some more. Any advise for adjusting the volume? Is it controlled by the Objects volume?

Hello!
Static noise is controled by "Objects volume", morse code by "Music volume". Important is to find proper balance between those controls.
It worked for me.

~salute~

VT-51_Razor 01-10-2011 02:59 PM

Hey thanks FatBug!!

Ian Boys 01-10-2011 06:37 PM

Yeah, I didn't know that. Good tip!

David198502 01-10-2011 08:14 PM

the landing lights are really annoying.i practiced now the whole day night landings with lorenz landing system. is set up the mission correctly i think. the lorenz system works fine as i am approaching the runway really nice.but my request for the landing lights dont get responded.thats really frustrating. they get turned on (after several requests) but only when i already past the airfield and begin a turn to try a second approach.dont know if anybody has the same problem?? it worked only one time yesterday but all other tries ended up in really blind landings or with a second approach.
