jippy13 12-31-2010 03:25 PM

Hi Oleg.
It s nice from you thinking of your fans the last day of the year.

Wow, the shadow of the pilot on his dammaged plane, amazing !!

Happy new year !

rakinroll 12-31-2010 03:26 PM

Thank you Oleg, and happy new year to you and the team.

Redwan 12-31-2010 03:28 PM

Very nice update ! Everything looks very nice except the screen where a guy bails out from a 109. This one looks very cartoony to me and I can't really explain why.
Maybe the textures ... and the clouds look less good than in Il246 ... I hope they are just a place holder.

secretone 12-31-2010 03:31 PM

Sir, Could You Please Tell Us A Little About The AI?

Thanks for the update Oleg. Best wishes for 2011 to you and your team.

Seeing larger formations leads me to wonder about the AI in SOW. Can you tell us anything about it? How will it differ from IL-2? What sort of changes/improvements can we expect?

RedToo 12-31-2010 03:36 PM

A very happy and productive new year to all on the SoW team.

It's all coming together very nicely now :)

Thanks for the update

Best wishes of Happy New Year to you and Team!

Formation is great.

Glass reflection seems overdone, given the amount of pics showing a strong reflection.

Cheers,

Nice Staffelkeil.

Happy New Year Oleg + 1C Team !

Thank You very much for 2010.

Sutts 12-31-2010 04:10 PM

Happy New Year Oleg, Luthier and Team. That 40 plane formation looks fantastic and the Wimpy shot really could be a photograph from the war years. Great work indeed.

We may whine sometimes but please remember how much we appreciate your efforts to bring us a first class sim. I hope 2011 brings you the success you richly deserve.

kristorf 12-31-2010 04:14 PM

Many thanks, those Spit markings look spot on (minor point of serial being over the code, but at 300mph+ who will notice)

Looking at those shots, well, I think we all will go absolutely crazy when
we'll finally see Hi-res/Hi-def/full details/full features shots and video from SOW....;)

Agreed. That caught my eye as well... And shows the lighting engine is VERY capable, and does not appear to have any "faking"; the objects and lighting are truly interacting with one another.

BigPickle 12-31-2010 04:32 PM

Happy New Year Thank you for the updates over the holidays.

I would love to see a cockpit shot for the Wellington.

I tend to agree with your comments on reflection though they may be catching the angle just right to capture that reflection and show it off. It's great to see it. The lighting engine looks very capable.

krz9000 12-31-2010 05:09 PM

wonderfull updates oleg and team!! i wish that this simulator will shift the simulation genre again back into mainstream attention. i have red you will publish by steam? THIS IS AWSOME!!! it will make impulse buys so much more common and keep us simmers always updated without hassels. also your ability to update often without woriing will help to make everyone happy :)

one last question: do you have a facebook account for your sim? pls create one...viral distribution into mainstream happens very easliy with facebook. xplane does this very successfully and it is actually easy to implement. just repost your weekly updates there every few days. you will see the attention will raise dramatically if all simmers share these updates with their mainstream friends.

Low res, low details, no AA, f/x at minimum , clouds from IL2 and probably DX9...

Don't worry... It will blow our minds when Oleg decides to put the big show on...

Thank you for the up-date and the New Year wish. I hope the same for you, your family and the team...I particulary like the third shot, the Stuka has a very cool looking patina from oxidation, and wear. Very nice appearance about her, and the exhaust staining looks wonderful as well.............also, it appears that the exit hole's of the bullets, raise the torn metal skin, and this is as it should be...cool:grin:

Do you know how long it took of flight time, to develope the staining and patina?

Well, Oleg told us himself about his PC "limitations" in previous posts
So his " personnal" updates are limited in terms of quality and are at low settings...For the hi res, he has to "borrow" a PC from his team...And he can't do that at this time...Luthier confirmed that also...

And if you take a look at sreen shots from this update...

Happy New Year all. I was flying IL-2 and I looked at the tires of my F4 Trop. When the modders start getting hold of SOW please don't put whitewalls on the 109 tires. I've never seen anything look so out of place in my life. You have to do an awful lot of searching to find a 109 with whitewalls.

Former_Older 01-01-2011 01:51 AM

The lighting in the very first pic, the one with the Bf109s, interests me. This pic seems less than impressive at first glance. But on closer inspection, this shows, to me, an important part of the lighting effects

In many photos of WWII aircraft, it is hard to see panel lines, although they are there. In this pic of the 109s, the panels lines all but have disappeared. It seems to me that this pic is actually quite impressive because it is imitating that effect. Judging from other pics, we will plainly see detailed panel lines depending on zoom and light

The pic of the Stuka seems almost to be a very detailed painting

I am impressed

simace-

I think what you mean to say is that everything is in very good focus, regardless of distance from the foreground

It should be OK for the tailwheel, though...Most if not all German tailwheel tyres had white walls, or at least were supposed to have them...This was not for fashion reason (!) but because this meant that the tyre was electricity conducing and in consequence the A/C did not need to be grounded electrically.
There were certainly some exceptions to the rule depending on available stocks, but you would not make a mistake in showing white walls on tailwheel tyres.

The main wheel tyres on the other hand were never white walled.

JV

Richie 01-01-2011 01:20 PM

Sounds fine with me. I have over 700 pictures of 109s in my Air War folder, I think there is a profile of a F4 Trop with whitewalls but again that's a print not a photograph. There's not one photograph in there of one with whitewalls though and I have many of Trop 109s

JVM 01-01-2011 01:32 PM

Are you talking about the main tyres, then?

Richie 01-01-2011 01:52 PM

Yes. There are some with whitewalls in the tail wheels as you said.

There is too much red in the blue.

There are some high res WWII images here showing roundel colours. The pictures are dated, but to me the reds look fine, just as they do in this week's WIP.

Yes, but for every shot on that site containing a marking that looks 'orange' there is another that looks 'red'. Period photos have to be taken with a grain, the film quality, age/fading of paint, lighting conditions and time of day all play hell with colours.

The dull red in the RAF roundels used from 1937 to 1947 doesn't even exist anymore in any standard colour chart. There is no match in the last British colour standard published (BS381C) and the closest match in the US Federal Standard (FS 595B) is more of a pale "brick red".

I've studied RAF marking and finish colours for a few years due to an interest in skinning aircraft for flight simulations and most (but not all) of the colours used by the RAF during WW2 are "extinct" according to modern British and US colour standards. Only "closest" matches are provided. This makes it very difficult to say "It should look like this" and show an example ;)

Looks a bit heavy indeed, but don't forget it's no longer a question of layer opacity - rivets and other surface features will use bump or normal mapping, so the appearance will depend a lot on the lighting angle. It looks less prominent on most other screens.

leggit 01-02-2011 07:20 PM

Oleg....I admit this is one of those detail posts...and i half appolgise for it...In the shot with the 109 having been shot down we have a really nice pic of a town...it looks great (here's the but) but 95% of the house have a clay red roof. we have a lot of Slate (very dark grey) roofed properties (particually pre 1940) in the UK. The only reason i bring it up is it may actually help break up the sea of brownish-red...sorry for my first...i'm going to be anal about detail post: it is meant with the best intentions. ;)

Interesting...I also noticed a set of tennis courts, at least I think they were tennis courts on a severe slope. The good news is they must have some sort of computer placement for villages software to help avoid hand painting everything.
