what does your user name mean?

we have such an eclectic group here and your user names intrigue me. what made you pick that specific name? part of your real name, something in history, something silly, what?? tell us the story behind your names...i think they will all be interesting ( even if you dont think yours is...it is)!

I'll start. there were singers in the 30s and 40s that all the young girls in the states used to swoon over. part of these teenage girls "attire" were a type of socks know as bobbysocks. the singers whom these girls adamantly followed were thus dubbed as bobbysocks singers or bobbysocksers. frank sinatra, when he started out was one of these. when my father was 18 and joined the usaaf he was a skinny little fart and somewhat resembled sinatra ( although he never could see the resemblance). so someone bestowed the name Bobbysocks on him and it stuck. so when i started flying ww2 ac online i felt it appropriate to use that as a game tag.

who's next??

dkwookie 12-11-2010 10:23 AM

Nice topic bobby. Mine comes from a friends I used to work with (we were both huge Star Wars fans). I am a tall guy and used to yawn very loudly at my desk in the office. My yawn apparently sounds like Chewbacca so I soon got the nickname. We used to play Halo 1 on xbox at LAN parties and tournaments and my nickname became my user name.

Shadowcorp 12-11-2010 12:57 PM

good topic

my id comes from the racing game mashed. i insisted on using the black car "shadow" and in multiplayer games with my friends i won from the most unlikely of circumstances, they insisted the game was conspiring to let me win and dubbed me shadow corp (corp short for corporation)... i do miss mashed things were simpler then.

The_Goalie_94 12-11-2010 04:03 PM

Im a hockey goalie

Gilly 12-11-2010 04:22 PM

It's my name! Or certainly part of it. Kinda stuck from childhood and how I'm now known both in business and personal life. So much so even my family use it. The additional on my psn is just because I can be!!!!

FOZ_1983 12-11-2010 07:39 PM

My surname is Foster, and since i was young i have always been called "foz" for short. Its stuck ever since, its my username on here, my XBL gamertag, my nickname.

markyboyacebassist 12-11-2010 10:15 PM

Sgt Fury was a character that featured in the war comics I used to read as a kid, mid 1960's. (no ageist jokes please!).
This was at a time when the PC brigade did not exist & such comics would not be allowed today!
Madmax is an Aussie hero of mine! :-P

Robotic Pope 12-12-2010 12:31 AM

ok mine comes from when I used to play Project Gotham racing 2 on the old xbox with a good group of friends and It was around the same time as the old Pope Jean Paul II was on his last legs, it was all over the news all the time but he just kept on living and it was gettin a bit boring. So we were messing around on pgr2 when someone joked how maybe the vatican had found a way to keep him alive forever. So then I went into the old xbox's voice masks (remember them lol) selected ROBOT and in a monotone voice said "I am the Robotic Pope!" It must have sounded pretty funny because they were laughing for minutes and we all selected robot voices and told jokes. It was too funny lol. Anyway when i got a xbox 360 I needed a new gamertag so I chose that so my friends would know its me and remember past good times.

Akula 12-12-2010 05:21 PM

Mine is the Russian word for "Shark", in Latin characters.

And my PSN is that of a username i had in a game, from a few years ago.

winny 12-12-2010 07:07 PM

My name is my nickname. I'm burdened with a surname that nobody can pronounce or spell but it has a winny sound in it so that's what everyone hooks on to. Except when I was an Air cadet when at my first role call the corporal couldn't pronounce my surname and said 'er.. Fred' so I was called Fred for 4 years.. When people use my real name it takes a second or 2 for me to realise it's me they are talking to.

KAV 12-12-2010 07:43 PM

Howdy Chaps

Mine is an initial and surname mix.
My name in ancient norwegian means " the man from the woods who wears a helmet"

Today. even my fellow natives are having problems with its pronunciation, so no wonder you guys need to reread it some times.

From Higschool I became KAV, so U may use that at psn.

flynlion 12-12-2010 08:52 PM

Fun thread Bobby, some of these are pretty good

My First name is Leo and I'm a pilot, so I've been the flynlion for as long as I can remember.

MACADEMIC 12-12-2010 09:48 PM

Mine's simple - expert for Macintosh Computers. Well, not really, I wish, but I love all things Apple.

Lahatiel 12-13-2010 02:02 PM

Lahatiel was known as an arch-angel and the guardian of the gates of death. I've used it since chatting on aol back in the early 90's.

grislawskijg52 12-13-2010 04:14 PM

Alfred Grislawski was the wingman of Herman Graff and early rotte fuhrer to Erich Hartmann. A great pilot needs a great Kaschmarek and that he was. My PSN WalterNowotny was just a great pilot and commanded the first operational jet wing.

haitch40 12-14-2010 10:09 AM

Mine was born through idiocy.
It was the name that my step dad used on games and things on the internet.
I was 14 so psn said i couldnt make an account so not thinking the logical way round as in I could fake my birthday. My step dad made one and you of course cant change your name after that.

Go on laugh at my idiocy.:-)

JOED70 12-14-2010 12:20 PM

Mine is just my First Name and Surname iintial with my year of birth . I just came up with it for PSN Xmas morning 4 years ago . Not knowing that once you picked one it was not changeable

Shadowcorp 12-14-2010 12:49 PM

me too

i did that too Joe with my first psn account but registered it to the wrong email address so some guy in germany has my original psn account now

nuklhed808 12-14-2010 02:40 PM

My psn comes from my former job title. Before being promoted to engineer, I was a rescue specialist for the FD, but because 90% of our rescues were in the open ocean, or in big surf we were known as watermen. The truck we would respond with was ID-ed as Rescue 7, hence the r7 part. I used this name initially for my ebay account and was uninspired(lazy) to change it on psn. So... nuklhed808 here, but watermanr7 on psn. As a side note, my avatar is my family crest from my German grandmother, Von Arnswalt.

i had my xbox for over a year and finished a few games and all of BoP in my "other" name. then signed up for Xbox live and picked this name thinking since it was on MY xbox i would get credit for it. talk about noob....sheesh.

The Few 12-14-2010 10:59 PM

The meaning of my forum user name is pretty obvious, i figured i would pick something that was contextual to the game. My psn is an abbreviation of my last name which is also my nickname and also has the number i wore while playing baseball in highschool and that my uncle wore while playing in the minors. Like some of you, people have a hard time pronouncing my last name and seem to find more ways to mix it up than i thought possible. Not that it bothers me in the slightest as even in my family we say it differently between the traditional and americanized versions. Also kind of funny, no matter where i have lived over the years everyone has always come to call me by the same nickname, so when my friends introduce me as "cep" sometimes people just assume that is my first name. One of my good friends parents didn't know my "real" first name for over a year. They were very confused once when I was at their place for dinner and their daughter was referring to me as Eric and they had no idea who she was talking about, lol.

trk29 12-15-2010 12:00 AM

Very simple and boring. My intials. I should have been thinking harder :) My other psn names were a little more thought out.

dkwookie 12-15-2010 07:54 AM

Great thread. We have chatted on here for over a year and reading this thread has been insightful. Our names are chosen by our parents but our online names all have a background story related to ourselves.

bezshumniy 12-15-2010 03:40 PM

PSN: bezshumniy
i think it means silenced in russian, theres no reason for it other than i thought it looked like an interesting word. i don't have a microphone though.

olife 12-15-2010 04:28 PM

olife is the nickname that some of my cousins give me.
oli are the 3rd first letters of my first name : olivier
and life...?don't know exactly,a bullshit of a drunk evening i think..!!

Soviet Ace 12-16-2010 08:32 PM

I'm clearly the best Soviet Ace.

bobswar 12-17-2010 05:39 AM

Mine means nothing, just made it up.
bob is also not my real name

McQ59 12-17-2010 10:39 AM

For ones in my lifetime I wanted to be called something with Mc in it. Originally McQ was the first nick I used on PSN, but my first PS I used to get online broke down (What a freaking surprise!) and of course I had forgotten my password when I got a new one back from Sony, so instead of tearing off the little I had left of hair to come up with a new username, I just added my year of birth.

Great thread btw!

Yeah, I knew memorising the entire Platoon script would come in handy one day!

(I'm lying, Zatoichi's ID is tagemandbagem so I just found the quote on imdb.com.. Barnes is so quotable!)

"You talking about killing? Hmm? Y'all experts? Y'all know about killing? I'd like to hear about it, potheads."

That scene is awesome. "I am reality!"

The_Stapler 12-29-2010 05:41 PM

Basically myself and a friend got bored and started pronouncing things wrong (ladle=lad-leh, house=ho-yous etc) I said stap-lur, much hilarity was had and the name stuck.

RuffMonk 12-30-2010 06:25 PM

Well my name comes from two seperate sources! Basically, I'm an avid fan of the OLD 1980's kung-fu movies from back in the day, in particular anything having to do with the monks of the Shaolin temple. This love followed me to my college football days to the point where I would do funny kung-fu poises when I made good plays. One day, one of my friends called me the Rough Monk after I made a vicious hit on an opposing running back and I liked it so much I decided to use it as my handle for just about anything I did online. So with a minor word alteration the RuffMonk was born! Not surprisingly, the name is never taken when I sign up for various online accounts, lmao!!!

Mage_016 12-31-2010 08:42 AM

My id is variant of my nickname Make which i've been called almost 30 years now. My friends in trade school turned Make to DaMage. I shortened it for PSN id, so that it would be easier to pronounce in finnish and it does not attract all kinds of fanatics to think that i'm a role play wizard(geez). And that 016 part is simply area code for Lapland.

hurricane 12-31-2010 02:50 PM

when I upgraded my arcade 360 with a hard drive,3 month live membership and headset,I was really anxious to start playing.I work for a small electrical contracting co. and my boss had a white board with the workers name and what job he was doing.I have a comercial drivers lisence and was the primary guy that operated the large airial lift we call bucket trucks.when I bitched about doing a job an hour away from home using the excuse that i needed to be closer to home to be availablefor bucket work he wiped off the name of the job and put bucketman under my name.I added a nickname roc at the end to get it.my 11 year old son thought it was pretty lame but I thought using his suggestion physco killer might have given a wrong first impression. I use hurricane here because its the first thing one should think of when playing IL2.

99th_Obsidian 01-05-2011 08:49 PM

My avatar is a picture of my uncle from his 1945 Tuskegee graduation class. While he never saw action I've been inspired to fly WWII sims ever since I learned he was a Tuskegee Airmen. One of the first Airmen squads was the 99th.

I studied geology @ U of Washington in Seattle. Obsidian is a volcanic rock that can form when basaltic lava is erupted into the air. It cools so quickly it takes on a glass like form. Early man discovered that it could be chipped and formed to make very sharp spear and arrow heads.

So 99th in homage to my late uncle and my online squadron and Obsidian, the deadly black arrowhead.

Burtonboy05 01-10-2011 03:58 AM

I'm an Australian of Croatian decent. My grandpa escaped the post WWII communist Yugoslavia regime on a fishing vessel through to Italy with around 30 others all of who eventually settled in Australia in the mid 50’s. Another boat was intercepted containing family and friends who were never heard from again all presumed executed. So my existence (and that of my father) is rather lucky as is the case with many of us no doubt. My surname (Mislov) is pretty uncommon globally as far as I can tell, anyway Aussies being Aussies they always shorten ones name and add a's, e's, or o’s for a nick name. I've always been Miz, Mizza, and very occasionally Mizwa. (Mizwa being my 360 gamer tag). Interestingly playing against Americans in online shooters they often think it’s of a Muslim decent and I’ve been called a terrorist on a number of occasions in a lobby lol. However a quick f*ck you mate in a heavy Aussie accent soon sets them strait. Pretty sad really but such is the plight of the unintelligent.

Outside of video games I have a passion for most board riding sports (surfing, skating, wake boarding etc) however it’s snowboarding that is the biggest of all my passions (outside of wife and young children of course lol) and my dream past time. I only ride and wear Burton equipment and my mates quickly picked up on it and started taking the pi$$. While having a refreshing brew post a hard days riding one of them commented here comes Burtonboy with the beers or is your round Burtonboy and it's kind of stuck mainly on snow trips or when hanging with that group of freinds. That too is usually followed with a quick F* you also, but all in good fun! So I use that one also in this forum at least and 5 is my lucky number.

hoghead 01-14-2011 06:00 AM

Meaning of 'hoghead' - my username

Nice topic for a newbie. My username is: ‘hoghead’. A few of you might know what a 'hoghead' is/was but I doubt most will know. A hoghead is a railroad Locomotive Engineer - the guy that runs or 'drives' freight trains (drive is used in the UK but never in US or Canada - we run or operate trains). Some think it's a derisive term for an unskilled Engineer but that is most probably not correct - it is just slang for an Engineer. End of train, Hoghead aka Richard

Luftwaffe_Rommel 01-17-2011 06:29 AM

hello everyone

First of all interesting thread. I had always wondered myself what was the story behind usernames; were they meant to be or just pure ramble.

Well Luftwaffe_Rommel got it from two things. First after playing secret weapons over Normandy, a great game by the way. I kind of like the word Luftwaffe instead of air force. second, Rommel well since I like tanks and planes and I had already chosen something to do with planes, the next thing that came to mind were Patton and Rommel:confused:. Since Patton was the grouchy one:evil: I chose Rommel plus it sounded better in my head, Luftwaffe_Patton nah:!:, Luftwaffe_Rommel and there you go:cool:.

Colonel Zick 01-17-2011 10:17 AM

Colonel Zick is the twisted mind of another profiled pilot in BoP. He crawled out form his asylum when there was a need for a pilot representing the Dark Legions to down and anihilate cowards with reargunners and lack of fighterskills in dogfights and teambattles. The colonel despises that kind of cheesy shit.
Colonel because he is a vet. Zick because he is mentaly unstable and flies under the influence of various substances.

About 20 years ago while being prompted to enter a handle for my character in Wing Commander, I stared blankly across the room, finally focusing on my book collection for inspiration I read the title Mystic Places.

For ten years Mystic was the hero of many adventures, until one day during a Crimson Skies pre-game chat someone just typed "stic", and I thought "How appropriate"

shiki con is a high school nick name and is representative of the thought process of the stoner who gave me the nick name.

WildBoar44 04-15-2011 06:36 PM

Ok Mr WalterNovotny...Since you asked Buddy !

The name WildBoar44 ? Well this is realy corny but its true...

44 because I used to race moto-x from a kid to before injury sidelined that around 30. 44 was a number I always raced with or 144 / 441 / anything with 44 in it.

WildBoar.?...well like all kids when i grew up , i would build Airfix model aircraft and hang them from my bedroom ceiling. the collection grew over my young years..Spitfire..Hurricane..Typhoon..Bolton Paul Defiant.. LANCASTER...oh lovely big beast...P51D...Halifax...ME109....

Then one day my Aunt bought me a plane never realy noticed before..as i built it, the shape, the lines, the grace suddenly came together to form one of the best looking aircraft i had ever seen, I could not stop getting out the bed in the night to look at it...when it was finished and painted..one last detail was two little transfers to put on the engine cowling.. They were the cartoon dipiction of a WildBoar's head... The Aircraft....The FW190...

When I played the Campaign for the first time i suddenly remebered those memories....So when it was time to Sign up on-line it had to be Wildboar.............Oh I just wish the FW190 in BoP could turn with the best

Slothboy 04-16-2011 12:05 AM

Got the nickname of Slothboy in college. My roommate kicked me awake from a nap to go to the commons for dinner. "Come on Slothboy." "Why slothboy?" I asked. "Because you are sloth-like and sedentary."

My gamertag is Ninja Slothboy because Slothboy was taken and I liked the idea of a very slow, but very deadly creature that attacks from darkness... eventually.

Edit: Before anyone asks, I have all my toes.

Cryptic Phant0m 04-16-2011 06:17 PM

I was called Cryptic Phant0m when I played Unreal Tournament back in the day.

I always used the sniper rifle and I was good at killing players and hiding again before they saw me. So they called me Phant0m and I never really talked to anyone so they called me the Cryptic Phant0m.

now if you had a 389 tri power set up or a 650 cfm holley double pumper straddling an edelbrock manifold ( polished of course) under the hood... with a double roller timing chain, a nice crane cam with solid lifters, headers, glass packs, and a dual point accel distributor and throw in a hurst shifter (T handle...anything else is an abomination) , and posi-traction rear end....chrome reverse rims and some slicks, that my man would be sharp and kick serious @$$!! ...( oh and if you want to be serious 60s... you need the chrome feet covers for gas pedal and dimer switch ..Mr. Gasket brand.) no seriously....good luck on that project. those were awesome sleds.

R-BADD7 04-29-2011 12:01 AM

Chrome feet HeHe, actually running 1994 Corvette LT1 drive train, approx 350 hp, fuel injected with hot cam & vintage flowmaster mufflers, sounds like a early muscle carbed beast, only difference is i can pass gas stations too!!! 22mpg, highway. some enthusiasts dont like restomod but I love it. If I wanted too I could rebuild the original 326 but the way this car runs...why do it? anyway, great thread with interesting people and interesting stuff.

those are cool mods! ought to scream like a rapped ape! i hardly ever make things 100% OEM...i mod them to the way i like. BUT keep that 326 and if you can find OEM accessories...intakes, etc scarf them up. that will be worth some mad cash one of these days.

R-BADD7 04-29-2011 11:54 PM

It also gives peace of mind knowing I can old school it again, old pontiac stuff hard to find though!

bobbysocks 04-30-2011 06:54 AM

let me know what you need......if and when you do. i grew up in the auto parts biz. and still have a lot of connections to hard to find things.

R-BADD7 05-01-2011 01:23 AM

AWESOME!!! Thanks bro

one of my favorite movies of WWII planes and squadrons, what I really like about them is their battlefield march song:
"contact joystick back
sailing through the blue
brown men tried and true
We are heroes of the night
the Hell with Axis might
fight fight fight fight
fighting 99th

Rat Tat, Rat Tat Tat
down in flames they go
fighting men of the 99th
send them down below
for we are heores of the night

As a matter of fact, I just recently purchased a RC foam ultramicro p51 D and modified it to a p51B and named it "Inna the macon Belle" in the memory of the first African American Ace Lt Lee Archer 1 of the gruesom twosome fighters of the 332nd fighter group. Cant remember which class from Tuskegee but i'm sure he wasn't from the first 6 classes that formed the 99th fighter group commanded by Benjaming O. Davis Jr.

there are some new members to the forum so I thought I would revive bobbysocks old thread.

Interesting thread Bobby...Well mine is my name...so unimaginative...so there...I did however, enjoy reading how some of you guys came up with yours...

MATTXYO 08-17-2011 10:47 PM

Mine was a quick choice, some friends had xbox live before myself and they all recognise my car reg number, so in my wisdom I matched it with my name so when I joined them on my first evening of live they would know it was me.
Yes I could of just sent them a message but there you go.
Its pronouced MATT.X.Y.O not all one word!
I was going to change it but it grew on me.;-)

Hi

My psn name the first part is my real name and I had just been watching a TV program about snakes just before I set up my psn name I liked the word Taipan and the snakes reputation of not backing down when threatened and striking many times when most snakes strike once and slither away,I am just
glad that in England we only have the adder that is venomous they are so reclusive they are rarely seen.

U2RATTLEHUM 08-20-2011 07:14 PM

I have always been a U2 fan since the late 70's (yea they been around that long) and although The Edge(Dave Evens) is not the greatest guitar player, he is the master of the effects pedals. ("It might get Loud" check it out) and a play on the album:"Rattle And Hum" I figure if I'm going to play this game there is going to be alot of rattling in my cockpit while getting shot down. [my favorit album is "The Unforgetable Fire"] THANKS for this post some great back grounds on the user names.

CrashLanding 08-21-2011 11:10 AM

Signifies my inability to land (or fly particularly well for that matter) in sim. Same message keeps popping up on my screen. XP
