"Tangmere Pilots" recruiting
Tangmere Pilots ( http://www.tangmerepilots.co.uk/frames/index.htm ) are currently recruiting for keen virtual pilots to join our Squadrons.
TP consists of 4 Squadrons(No1, No43, No145 and No601) and regulary have 40+ pilots online,in HyperLobby on a Sunday evening, which is when we fly our ongoing campaign missions. We have some of the best mission builders in the business, the amount of research and work that goes into these weekly missions have to be seen(played)to be believed,95% of these are historically accurate accounts of the missions we re-create. At the moment we are currently flying the Battle of France Campaign, and we all know where this leads too If you are interested just simply apply, where after you will be posted to No6_Operational Training Unit at Sutton Bridge to pass 4 Assesement Flights. These 4 flights will cover basic flying skills and will also give you the basic RT(ventrillo)voice procedure. Also it gives you a chance to get to know us and us you. All TP ask Recruits is that they make available flying time twice weekly. Tuesday evening for training, and (if possible)friday to fly our COOP's. Sunday evening 21:00 GMT is our official flying night, where we fly our online Campaign ,thus mandatory to join Before these times we usually fly a dogfight server where we all just have a laugh(but Sundays are taken more seriously, as this is where we gain points for the respective Sqadrons and is genuinely taken a tad more seriously. We do use a modded version of IL2 but don’t let this put you off,as there will always be someone there to help you install all that is needed with ease. So if you want to fly,and more importantly FIGHT with a bunch of blokes who can help and genuinely make you feel part of an on line Squadron then look no further than http://www.tangmerepilots.co.uk/frames/index.htm No1_Cheese Blue2 No1 Squadron |

Based on.......
6 Hurricanes set of from Reims at 09:30. They were to escort 8 Battles from 88 & 218 sqns........15 miles from Vouziers, a formation of 7 Do17s were encountered by the Hurricanes, but not attacked since the squadron's task was to protect the Battles. The Battles were ordered to attack German columns near Wiltz, which they attempted to do......7 of the 8 were shot down, 4 crash landing. At least 8 crew were killed with the others being taken prisoner. The only Battle to survive was an 88 sqn machine which force landed at Vassincourt, badly damaged. At least 1 of the Battles fell victim to 109s of I/JG27. _________________ P/O Dutch DSO*, DFC Green 2 145 Sqn. No1Cheese |

Last nights mission was an absolute classic. There was 28 Tangmere Pilots in this mission in HyperLobby last night.I flew as No4 in A Flt flying a Battle with my trusty wingman(Flt Sgt Kluge) as my Air Gunner(who managed to bag a hun from there rear seat). We knew it was going to be a tough mission, and our escorts had the work cut out to cover the slow Battles. The Hurricanes did a fantastic job and not one of the 7 Battles where destroyed by enemy a/c. Alas the battles did not destroy there primary tgt but had many hits and taking out quite a few enemy transport had a long flight home, harried by enemy 109s,that is until our escort came and clobbered the buggers!!! A Fantastic mission, made by our Wing C/O Mothyp. More details............................... For those that weren’t sure, Mothy’s mission last night recreated one of the most iconic & heroic missions undertaken by the RAF during WW2. In real life the Battles had to travel much further than us from their base at Amifontaine. They also had to brave some 300 flak guns of all calibers around the target bridges. The Germans were amazed that it had taken the British command from the Friday – when these vital bridges were captured, to the Sunday, to launch an attack. Here is an extract from Valiant Wings by Norman Franks. …..In Battles F & G, Thomas & Davy constituted the first section & their target was the concrete bridge at Vroenhoven, while Battles K,N & J would go for the metal bridge at Veldwezelt. The two section leaders having decided upon their approach, headed for the target. Seven No.1 squadron Hurricanes led by Bull Halahan went ahead (as was policy at the time) with the intention of clearing enemy fighters over the target, while three more flew with the low level Battles. Halahan & his pilots were promptly swamped by 109s from JG27 & were therefore helpless to protect the bombers. When still some miles from the target, the bombers saw more 109s, & the three Hurricanes with them were quickly engaged. Then the target was ahead. The sky became black with exploding AA fire as the town came into view, while seemingly all around them flew 109s. Gordon Patterson noticed abandoned gliders on the ground, used by German troops when they flew behind Dutch lines to capture the bridges. Thomas’s Battle was quickly shot down & he & his crew captured. Tom Davy with his machine streaming smoke & flame, headed down, & ordered his crew to bail out. Davy managed to nurse his aircraft back to finally crash land at St Germaincourt. Mansell came down safely & got back on a bicycle, but Gordon Patterson was taken prisoner. Meanwhile Don Garland was heading in at low level, but this didn’t fool the defenders. They knew how important the bridges were & they were ringed by anything up to 300 guns of all calibers, which could put up a wall of iron. Ian McIntosh had his petrol tank holed & the Battle caught fire. He jettisoned his bombs, crash landed & was taken prisoner. Fred Marland dived into the flak, released his bombs but was then hit. His Battle pulled up, winged over & dived into the ground. Garland too was down. He headed in, his Battle surrounded by exploding gunfire. He was hit repeatedly, but the bombs went down, then the Battle dived into the ground, smashed by a veritable curtain of steel. What damage had been done was not clear at the time. Later, damage appeared to have been inflicted to the Veldwezelt bridge……. Whatever doubts there might be about the damage done, what was not in doubt was the heroism of the attack. All five Battles had been shot down, two crews had been captured, two lost & one safe, though minus their gunner…. Garland damaged one section of the Veldwezelt bridge, but this was quickly repaired, & in the meantime pontoon bridges were placed across the canal to compensate. Donald Garland & his observer, Tom Gray both won the VC. For reasons that still aren’t clear, his gunner LAC Lawrence Reynolds went without recognition. Thanks Mothy for an excellent mission, & Tom for hosting us all. Some pics of the Battles and there "Little Friends". http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-22-06-71.jpg http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-21-16-73.jpg http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-21-14-56.jpg http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-19-13-75.jpg http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-43-03-59.jpg http://i595.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-42-53-57.jpg No1Cheese |
This week sees us going back to the same tgts as last week!!!!!
The Battles did a valiant job,but we have to return to finish the job, this time with NO fighter cover!!!!! This weeks breifing.......... Mission 1 of 1 Operations Order to 67 Wing, 75 Wing, repeated to 71, 75 Wings and North Eagle. From Panther: Operation Order 617 dated 12.5.40 timed 09:50 Confirming telephone instructions, Blenheims of 15 Squadron are to attack Bridges 190 degrees AM30, 2 miles and 180 degrees AM30, 4 miles. Time over target 1100 hours. Aim of attack is to destroy or damage bridges. BoF34 12th May 1940 ZERO:- 10:30 hours – Nevilles OPERATIONAL INFORMATION:-15 Squadron: Gentlemen, following a raid earlier this morning by 12 Squadron Battles on the bridges on the Albert canal, west of Maastricht, we are to follow home the attack on the same targets. I must warn you that the Battles encountered heavy flak near the target area and stiff fighter defence by the Luftwaffe. This is a very well defended target and this will be a tough mission. Due to heavy commitments by our Hurricane Squadrons in France, there will be NO fighter escort. We believe that the bridges have been damaged but not destroyed. It is crucial that these bridges are taken out of commission. The two bridges over the Albert canal are only four miles apart, the Veldwezelt bridge is the northerly bridge with an alignment of roughly east-west (WNE-ESE), the Vroenhoven bridge has an alignment of roughly SW-NE) both are vital to the German advance and must be destroyed. We will attack in Squadron strength using a LOW LEVEL DIVING ATTACK. AIRCRAFT:-Bristol Blenheim Mk IV SKIN:- TP_ skins FUEL & WEAPON LOAD:- 100% 2x500lb bombs METHOD:- Take off from Nevilles and climb to Angels TEN. Keep close formation at all times on transit to target area. Head to Lieges. At Lieges, descend to Angels TWO and follow the river NE. Eventually you will need to turn NW and follow the canal to the bridges. Attack BOTH bridges simultaneously using a LOW LEVEL DIVING attack. A flight will attack the Veldwezelt bridge and B flight will attack the Vroenhovem bridge. After your attack, egress the target area at TREE TOP LEVEL and head to home base or nearest friendly airfield. INTELLIGENCE:- Expect heavy flak around the target area. Enemy fighters will now undoubtedly be patrolling the area due to the attack made earlier this morning by the Battles. Possibly in large numbers. METEOROLOGICAL REPORT:- 4/10ths cloud at 9000ft extending to 12,000ft. Wind 120 at 03 knots. Visibility Good. SIGNALS:- No. 15 Squadron call sign - CROW Ground Control call sign T O P H A T MISSION POINT AWARD:- 1 Mission Point will be awarded if two or more Blenheims return to any Friendly airfield. OR 1 bridge is destroyed. This mission is to be played 1 game per Squadron. I would like to have at least 9 players per Squadron. It might be the case that we need to "transfer" surplus pilots from a squadron to fill the gaps in other squadrons to even the numbers up. This will be done on the Sunday night. Last sundays mission saw Tangmere Pilots of all 4 Squadrons breaking down into 3 games to fly this mission,9 pilots took part in the mission i flew. 5 A/C Lead by Wg Cmdr Mothyp took on the 1st bridge,While Blue section lead as always by F/Lt Charlie went for the 2nd bridge with 4 A/C. Charlie went into a shallow dive to release his 2 500lb,closely followed by me,Moggy and Kluge. Charlie missed the tgt and pulled up to avoid the intense AAA. I dropped my bombs onto the tgt observing hits(see pic) but alas(again)the damn bridge was still standing!!!! Moggy and Kluge also missed the main tgt but both attracted a lot of attention from the defending AAA and both picked up damage for the flight home. No1 Squadron consisted of 8 pilots tonight(1 of 4 Squadrons of similar strenght all flying the same mission)in 3 flights, red, blue and green. Red Flight Led by Tangmeres Wing Co MothyP took 3 A/C,Griffin and Jacko went to Leuven, east of Brussels (BB15) While Blue and Green fly(consisting of 5 very able pilots me included:) to Dinant (BC9/BC8). Whilst Blue and Green Flt where looking pretty forming up in the "good old Hendon"fashion Red flight (who where quite some distance away)where bounced by Me109s who were escorting Ju87s to there tgt. Unable to help in any way possible we heard as 1 by 1 the pilots of red flt fell to the overwhelming numbers of 109s Blue and Green Flt continued of there given fly path and eventually made it back to there base, unhindered by enemy opposition(which is more than can be said for Red Llt!!!!) We could see in the distance.11 o clock slightly low at least 9 He111s. No1 Charlie(Blue Ldr) took us in for a perfect beam attack, all getting hits(unfortunately the got hits on me too). What do I do,go home with 90% ammo left or try to have another go? YEP I tried,I went in on the last bomber on 2 beam attacks,I pushed my luck to much and on the 3rd we collided and I had to hit the silk!!! Here are some screenshots from the mission. Last nights mission(No38 of our current campaign) was made by F/Lt Bunny DSO** DFC***
145 Squadron B Flight Leader, Blue Section Executive Officer 145 Squadron. Now as stated before, he normally throws the odd spanner in the works but this week the GIT did well. As from now Baron Von Bunster is not being spoken too by the rest of the tangmere pilots(and rightly so). I can only talk for No1 squadron(but I think the other 3 lesser squadrons followed in the same path) climbed to angels 20. Then our C/O No1 MothyP gave the order for B Flt and Green Flt to climb to angels 25. Now at that height in an early mk Hurribus is one thing,we was pretty well strung out as we tried to form on Blue Flt Ldr Charlie, but it all come together when it mattered most. We encountered 8 110s as they attacked A flt,I called”BREAK BREAK” to the C/O and he managed to miss the attention of the ferocious guns of the the 110 that was diving on him. After that it was was all for himself as we dived and turned to try to get the upper hand on the enemy fighters, bearing in mind that we was after the bloody bombers that we had not seen.As we made it back to base,in dribs and drabs we had accounted ourselves well. P/O Griffin managed to land in one piece and was saying to “See Boss I can do it” when 3 He 111s appeared over our base as we was on finals!!!! Griff took off once again(having a full load of ammo)into the fray again, climbing and making contact with Madmick to have a go at the hun again. Know what followedwill go down in No1(virtual)Folk law. Griff took off(after landing successfully(PHEW) to get another crack at the bombers over head,Mick(who just happens to be a bit of a dab hand at shooting the b**tards from the sky was with him!!!! As they both went into attack Griff shouted” theres a smoker and thers another 1” And then couldn’t make it back to base because of engine trouble!!! Mick on the other hand landed back at base with a few shared kills(1 of my 110s) and was heard to say”cheers for the back up griff, but you weren’t really needed!!) Bloody Great mission with more than a few surprises, how they do it week in week out really does amaze me,and im a noobe only being with them 2 yrs!!!!! Just the update for this Sundays mission. This should be ok because like me P/O Duth supports THFC !!!! unlike Bunny who watches Munich or something like that!!! Things are hotting up around here! We are getting reports of the enemy at all fronts and everyone is starting to feel the strain. Absolutly GUTTED!!!!!
I couldnt join last nights mission due to tech problems. Really gutted about this because i love to get comfortable with a few beers, relax and enjoy the dogfights before the mission(which i joined, but when it come to mission time thats when probs started). Anyway P/O dutch posted this about the mission he tried to depict, and by all accounts it was a very tough mission. 35+ pilots of Tangemere took part in this mission,8 Pilots from No1 took part(less me ) and only 1 pilot,Flt Sgt Kluge made it back to base safe and sound managing to take down a 109. __________________________________________________ ________ Based on..... Sqn Ldr Gifford set off at the head of 6 Hurricanes of 3 squadron to patrol the Wavre-Louvain area. 8 a/c were seen flying low by red section; identified as Hs126 observation a/c, & attacked. 2 were claimed destroyed by Sgt Roy Wilkinson & Sgt Dennis Allen. An He111 of KG54 was then sighted & engaged by F/L Walter Churchill & Allen, who together with P/O Frank Carey of blue section, claimed that the bomber fell to their attack. Carey then joined F/O Dickie Ball in pursuit of a Do17, but the latter was heard to call for help having been bounced by 5 109s [of 1/JG21]. Ball was seriously wounded in the thigh, crash-landed & was taken prisoner, but succumbed to his wounds on 4th June. _________________ P/O Dutch DSO*, DFC Green 2 145 Sqn. ------------ No1 Cheese |

The excellent missions of the last 2 weeks by Mothy & Bunny have portrayed the heroic, but ultimately fruitless & costly attempts by the RAF & the French Air force to stop the German crossing of the Meuse in the vicinity of Sedan.
For those interested, here is a bit more info....... On the 10th May 1940 the German Army launched massive ground attacks against The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France supported by the formidable power of the German Air Force with its extensive numerical superiority over the Allies. By the evening of the 13th May the situation had become extremely grave as the Germans began to cross the River Meuse in considerable strength. This threatened the front and also the whole area around Reims where the RAF Advanced Air Striking Force was based. The RAF squadrons in France had already incurred very heavy losses in intensive operations during the first three days of the invasion. Shortly before midnight on the 13th May the AASF was ordered by its commanding officer, Air Marshall Barratt, to prepare to attack three pontoon bridges in the Sedan sector and two in the Dinant area on the following day. Both attacks were given the highest priority. During the night information was received to the effect that the French had destroyed the bridges at Dinant and had attacked German road convoys and troop movements in the same area. The AASF Squadron were therefore instructed to concentrate on the pontoon bridges at Sedan from dawn on the 14th May. 103 Squadron was on stand by at 03:30 and eight Fairey Battles led by F/O Havers took off at 05:05. A fighter escort by Hurricanes from 73 Squadron was provided. As they arrived in the target area they found there were four pontoon bridges over the River Meuse and one over the River Cheres, all within a radius of six miles from Sedan. The eight Battles attacked and one bridge was seen to be hit. No fighter opposition was encountered but there was considerable light flak and small arms fire. All eight Battles returned although Sgt C D Parry was badly wounded by ground fire. He managed, with great difficulty, to fly back to the vicinity of the Squadron airfield at Betheniville and crash-landed. He was later awarded DFM. Four Battles from 150 Squadron took off later that morning with fighter escort and made further attacks. Despite considerable opposition from light flak they managed to score several hits and escaped back to their airfield at Ecury. Shortly after a single Bristol Blenheim from 114 Squadron carried out an armed reconnaissance around Sedan-Givonne-Boullion to report on enemy troop movements. Large numbers of German troops and motor transport were noted in the area. A shallow dive bombing attack was made on a German column near Bosseval and the aircraft sustained some damage. The French Air Force launched three attacks with fighter escort in the area of Sedan later that morning and into the afternoon. As the afternoon progressed the pressure was still on in the Sedan area and it became imperative that a major effort was required by the AASF to try and stem the German advance. Orders were given that every available bomber was to be made ready and a plan was devised with the French Air Force for concerted attacks to take place in the Sedan area throughout the rest of the day. The air battles of the previous four days had already taken a heavy toll and the 10 bomber squadrons of the AASF had only 71 aircraft operational between them for the operations that afternoon. 19 Battles from 12 Squadron, 142 Squadron and 226 Squadron of 76 Wing were first into action in mid afternoon. 12 Squadron were tasked to bomb enemy columns on the road from Sedan to Givonne. These attacks were made in the face of fierce flak and fighter opposition and four of the five Battles were shot down. The fifth managed to limp back to base at Amifontaine. The eight Battles of 142 Squadron and six Battles of 226 Squadron were tasked to attack the bridges between Sedan and Mouzon. Again the opposition from flak and fighters was intense with the attacks pressed home through withering ground fire and walls of tracer. 142 Squadron lost four aircraft and 226 Squadron lost three. Several hits were claimed on the bridges and at least one Bf 109 was claimed as shot down by a returning air gunner with several more claimed as damaged. It was then the turn of 71 Wing. 15 Battles of 105 Squadron and 150 Squadron were tasked to attack bridges in the Sedan area and eight Blenheims of 114 Squadron and 139 Squadron were to attack enemy troop columns. All four Battles of 150 Squadron were shot down and six out of 11 from 105 Squadron. The Blenheims of 114 Squadron and 139 Squadron observed large numbers of enemy troops and transport on the roads in the area and pressed home their attacks losing a total of five aircraft. The position was clearly hopeless and the operations almost suicidal but the raids continued. 75 Wing made up of 88 Squadron with 10 Battles, 103 Squadron with eight Battles and 218 Squadron with seven Battles flew the next attack. The targets were again to be the bridges and enemy columns in the Sedan area. 103 Squadron made dive-bombing attacks on the bridges at low level and once more the defenders took their toll. Three Battles were shot down. The aircraft of P/O V A Cunningham received a direct flak hit and exploded in mid air killing the pilot and his gunner. F/O T B Fitzgerald was wounded by flak but pressed home his attack. He crash landed returning to base but was able to return to the squadron the following day with his gunner. F/O Fitzgerald was awarded the DFC for his actions on this day. Sgt G Beardsley was shot down by a Bf 109 and crash-landed. With his gunner he walked 15 miles through the forward battle area and was picked up by French forces. They returned to the squadron on the 17th May. 88 Squadron fared comparatively well losing only one aircraft but 218 Squadron lost five aircraft. In view of the appalling losses sustained during the afternoon further attacks by the AASF were cancelled and an attack by the French Air Force was postponed. An attack by Blenheim squadrons of 2 Group in the UK was, however, brought forward. 21 Squadron, 107 Squadron and 110 Squadron tasked 30 Blenheims to bomb targets at Sedan and were provided with a fighter escort by the RAF and French Air Force. The aircraft of 107 Squadron all bombed enemy columns despite being subjected to moderate flak, which damaged five aircraft. All returned to base. 110 Squadron encountered Bf 109s and intense flak whilst making low level bombing attacks on enemy columns losing five of their number. 21 Squadron met similar opposition attacking pontoon bridges and troop columns. Two Blenheims were lost to fighter attack and another was written off in a crash landing on return to base at Bodney. The returning air gunners claimed several Bf 109s shot down. That night the French Air Force mounted a raid. 226 Squadron of the AASF made a token night attack with two Battles taking off at 20:50. Both bombed troop movements in the area of Sedan. Sgt Hoyle was the last to return at 23:35, his Battle with leaking fuel tanks caused by flak. During the day the bombers of the AASF and 2 Gp had detailed a total of 112 sorties. Of these 42 aircraft had been lost with several more crash landing on return and at least 15 others sustaining various degrees of significant damage. Since the 10th May 50% of the AASF Battles had been lost and the two AASF Blenheim squadrons had almost been wiped out. On the 14th May RAF fighter squadrons of the AASF and Air Component based in France had been stretched almost to breaking point. The Luftwaffe had been mounting raids of their own in considerable numbers. The fighters had been heavily engaged in intercepting these attacks and had not had sufficient numbers to provide effective escort to the RAF bombers as well. The RAF fighter squadrons lost 27 Hurricanes during the day. French fighter squadrons were similarly heavily committed during the same period. Luftwaffe reports show a total of 38 of their aircraft destroyed and eight damaged in combat with the RAF fighters on that day. Subsequent reconnaissance showed that at least one pontoon bridge and one permanent bridge were destroyed and several more were damaged. As for the road targets some success was achieved but the German army was advancing in such force that these were not sufficient to cause them major problems. During the day the French army had mounted a counter attack which had stabilised the situation for some hours but a much greater effort was going to be required in the days to come to check the German advance fully. Air Marshall Barratt knew that his depleted bomber squadrons would be unable to repeat their efforts of the 14th and a few more days of these horrendous casualties would wipe them out all together. On the 15th May he ordered that the Battle squadrons were to fly operations only by night unless absolutely necessary. Important lessons had been learned from the first four days of the Battle of France. It was clear that the Battles and Blenheims were unable to operate by daylight against targets heavily defended by fighters and flak without the protection of close supporting fighter escort in large numbers. Low level attacks in daylight had proved very costly bringing the aircraft into the range of the highly effective and well-organised German light flak. The Battles and Blenheims themselves lacked adequate performance and were too lightly armed so were unable to look after themselves. Both aircraft were lacking in armour and self-sealing fuel tanks and were very vulnerable in combat. The commitment and quality of the pilots and crews was, however, above any criticism and all had shown remarkable courage and skill in the face of the most difficult of situations. The tactics regarding fighter escort were quickly reviewed and whenever possible future daylight operations were supported by close fighter escort from the RAF squadrons in France and/or fighter units based on the South coast of the England. The bomber force was used more sparingly and often by night and attacks were now usually made from an altitude which was beyond the effective range of light flak and small arms. These measures cut the losses amongst the bomber force significantly. The end of the Battle of France brought the end of the Fairey Battle as an operational bomber and it was soon phased out. The Bristol Blenheim soldiered on for a number of years and, in spite of its limitations, gave valuable service operating over Western Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Far East. The events of the 14th May 1940 and the three previous days had been traumatic for the RAF and the experience had showed that many lessons that had been learnt the hard way in WW1 had already been forgotten. These lessons were, however, quickly relearnt and acted on during the coming years when the RAF fighters and bombers grew to become highly effective and played a major roles in the final defeat of Hitler and the Third Reich. _________________ P/O Dutch DSO*, DFC Green 2 145 Sqn. |

Tonights mission briefing.Mission built by P/O Dutch. Section strenght tonight. * * * ALL PILOTS WILL FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONAL INFORMATION * * * * Mission 1 of 1 OPERATIONAL BRIEFING – Battle of France 43 ------------------------------------------------------ DATE:- 15th May 1940 ZERO:- 07:30 hours No.1 Squadron - Cambrai airfield. OPERATIONAL INFORMATION:- Wing have just reported a Jerry formation heading our way - looks like we might be the target. They were on a heading of 240 degrees, approaching Charleroi at approx 10 to 12 thousand feet; 10+ bandits – twin engine types. Scramble 2 sections, head for Charleroi & intercept. Hawker Hurricane 12lb boost Skin: TP_1940_Hurricane (markings off) Arming: Default & 100% fuel ROUTE :- CAMBRAI > CHARLEROI HEIGHT:- At Flight Leader’s discretion INTEL: Things aren’t looking good. The Dutch surrendered yesterday, & we have reports that the German Army have broken through the French line along the river Meuse at Sedan. METEOROLOGICAL REPORT:- Bright, some cloud. SIGNALS:- No. 1 Squadron call sign - F I L M S T A R No. 43 Squadron call sign - I M P I No. 145 Squadron call sign - R A B B I T No. 601 Squadron call sign - A N G E L Ground Control call sign – T O P H A T MISSION SUCCESS:- Destroy as many enemy aircraft as you have pilots in your mission. Plus, suffer no more than 1 pilot KIA. This mission will be flown in flight strength. There will be missions for 3/4/5/6 players Hurricanes will take off from 2 parallel runways. (except for 3 player mission) _________________ P/O Dutch DSO*, DFC Green 2 145 Sqn. ------------ |
At about 07.30, six Hurricanes of 1 squadron's A flight were scrambled on the approach of a raid, & met 40 Do17Zs of I & II/KG3 escorted by about 15 Bf110s of III/ZG26.
In the ensuing series of dogfights, 110s were claimed by F/L Johny Walker, F/O Iggy Kilmartin, Sgt Frank Soper & Sgt Taffy Clowes. Walker force landed after being hit, while F/O Paul Richey's a/c was shot down in flames, although he claimed one & a probable. Despite the attention of the Hurricanes, some of the raiders got through & bombs dropped across the centre of Berry-au-Bac airfield. So many of the sorties the real life chaps flew were against impossible odds - so that's what I was aiming for - lots of baddies against not many of you....although to give you half a chance the majority were rookies. I tried to manipulate it so that you'd primarily engage the 110s (as in RL) - but that didn't quite work out, at least in 145 B flight's fight. _________________ P/O Dutch DSO*, DFC Green 2 145 Sqn. |

Since we was posted to France Tangemere Pilots have had many online adventures.
The thinking was that we would fly the Battle of France Campaign(a fantastic effort from our mission builders, litterally every week brought a new surprise, and i for one loved flying the Hurribus) then maybe go on and fly DAH DAH DAH!!!!!! THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN in Cliffs of Dover!! Although we all hope that one day this will live up to what is expected for the 40+Online pilots of Tangmere at the moment it falls short(You have never met me,that takes a lot for me to say!!!) Although actually the battle lasted weeks,we would have flown it for months and months, flying all types of a/c and missions, with no doubt some "funnys"thrown in for good measure. Since my last post i volunteered for No333 Squadron(Banff Wing temporaly)and like a few other Tangmere Pilots asked for special duties,i know,i know being ex Army "you never volunteer for nuffing!!!!" But as stated before we fly our"Campaign Missions on a Sunday night,21:00 very sharp!! before that we tend to fly a d/f server and guninelly have a laugh when our Trg Instructor crashes into imaginary trees!!! Anyway any anyway as i was saying,i volunteered for this"SPECIAL DUTIES" and after the special duties Flt carried out there Recce Flt somewhere in Norway, photos provided to the the rest of the Wng, little did i know that i would be asked to lead the WHOLE Tangmere Wing in on an OPS night!!! Had to give the C.O a set of of orders, flight plan, height, weather route in etc etc etc!!! Thats because i volunteered, you wont be expected to(unless you want to ) im normally Blue2 ie wingman to a bloke called No1 Charlie, hes ok as far as ldrs go but hes normally stuck in "traffic" or on face book talking to.... ER ooops sorry Charlie!!!!! Thats how The Tangmere Pilots work,A good laugh with mates(and i have met quite a few over the last 3 odd yrs ive been with this lot) when we can,ie trg on a tues and d/f on sunday(not to mention the COOPs on a friday night, i cant seem to make them as im normally out:) ) If you want to know more please send our Trg officer an e mail(or if you want to no more before you committ send me a pm:)) Ive got to say,ive downloaded missions from the net that people rave about but they are seriously nothing compared to what our"boffins" bang out week after week, and whats more 90% of them are historical,as are our campaigns What follows is a few pics of our ongoing battles with the hun(and if you see a message that reads"No1 Cheese just got shot down by flak etc etc, well even IL2 has its bugs)also a few of our last weekly updates from Jacko(our spy) So if your interested in joing a group of blokes that enjoy the same things you do and genuinly have a laugh, get intouch. What have you got to lose? We have FOUR active Squadrons and you could be posted to any of them(provided you pass OTU ) Hope to hear from you No1 Cheese No1 Squadron Tangmere Pilots Pics to follow. ps ive just got in from work and cant get a spell checker to work so excuse me for any mistale in my speellinng |
As promised, this was the "brief"we was given.
No333 then went out on there Recce Flt and come back with the following goods. The Recce Flt has strict orders not to engage the enemy. Now dont think this is a short straw(ang on,who keeps mentioning height !!!!) because we fly the mssion that we give a breif on and we know what to expect(yeah ok the mission builder make it that simple . Heres the breif.......... Over the past 3 months, enemy air opposition had been fairly sporadic against the Wing. The Germans would no longer be content to send out single or small mixed groups of fighters to attack the Beaufighters and Mosquitos. On the 7th December, Staffels from JG5 moved into southern Norway and from this point the Strike Wing would be met with up to 40 enemy fighters, including Fw190's and Me109's, nearly every time the wing flew a strike operation. The Luftwaffe had 50 109's and 30 190's in operation from several bases including Gossen, the Mustang escorts were going to be kept very busy for the next for months........... * * * ALL PILOTS WILL FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONAL INFORMATION * * * Mission 1 of 1 Banff Strike Wing 07 - Wing Op 7th December 1944 ZERO:- 08:10 hours OPERATIONAL INFORMATION:- RAF Banff No 333 and No 235 Squadrons RAF Dallachy No 404 Squadron RAF Peterhead No 315 Squadron No 333 Squadron - Reconnaissance Briefing Gentlemen, Today it is our intention to strike back at the Luftwaffe with a large scale attack on the airbase at Gossen. Volunteers are required from 333 Sqd to fly a Photo/Recon mission to obtain photos of the airbase which will then be used as intelligence for the main attack. Your navigators have been provided with cameras for this mission. PATROL AREA(S):- Gossen - Grid G14 METHOD:- Take off from Banff. Fly at low level or as weather dictates. Navigate to patrol area(s). Note the positions of aircraft on the gorund, fuel / ammo dumps and hangers. Also take note of flak installations and density. DO NOT ATTACK ANY ENEMY SHIPPING. Proceed to target area and attack the airbase. 315 Squadron to provide top cover escort to and from the target area AND whilst the attack is in progress. Return to base and land or ditch if required in "safe area" as detailed below. METEOROLOGICAL REPORT:- General Weather: Poor Cloud Height: 1900 m Wind Velocity: 3 m/s Wind Direction: 280 Deg Gust: Moderate Turbulance: Moderate SIGNALS:- No. 333 Squadron call sign - W E A V E R No. 235 Squadron call sign - M E R I T No. 404 Squadron call sign - S I L V O No. 315 Squadron call sign - P O R T A L Ground Control call sign – P I O N E E R MISSION POINT AWARD:- The mission point will be awarded if the RED WON message in displayed AND at least 3 Mosquitos and 3 Beaufighters make it back to a friendly base. A "Vickers Warwick" with a detachable lifeboat will be patrolling in grid D11 for the second mission ONLY. Any pilot who ditches safely in this area will be deemed to have been "rescued" and returned to base. His aircraft will still be lost however. INTEL:- Luftwaffe fighter defense has increased with large numbers of fighters operating from Gossen and Herdla. Flak defense of enemy airbases is expected to be heavy and concentrated. NOTES:- This mission will be a combined Wing Op. Escort will be on seperate comms chanel. Good Luck Bunster EXTRA NOTES:- More details will posted later this week, however I thought you ought to have some warning about this mission so you could adjust your Tuesday training to suit. The "photos" will have to be taken using Fraps or some such other method of taking screen shots. The screen shots must be from within the cockpit of the aircraft, no outside views. You will need to post these photos into a place where the rest of the Strike Wing can see and study them. A post in the Ops Room would seem the best idea. You may if you wish fly the mission earlier on Sunday than normal or indeed any other night so you have time to get the photos posted. Try to avoid TP nights. Any questions ? _________________ F/Lt Bunny DSO* DFC* 145 Squadron B Flight Leader, Blue Section Executive Officer 145 Squadron. And heres the results we come back with that the Squadrons of Banff had to decipher and decide what was there options....... BANFF 07 RECONNAISSANCE REPORT Reconnaissance reports that over Gossen the weather was clear with scattered cloud. Some ground haze was present making individual targets hard to see. Photographs were taken as follows: 1. From south of Gossen providing an overview of the island. 2. From the NW so that all of the airfield and harbour can be seen. The aircraft appear to be a mix of bombers and fighters, with the fighters concentrated to to the east of the runway. Out of shot to the right was a transport ship that appeared to be stationary. 3. The cluster of building and vehicles to the eastern end of the runway. 4. The harbour that is north of the eastern end of the airfield. 5. One further picture from the NW. Some 88 flak bursts were seen. Predominantly the flak appears to be of small calibre (37mm and 20mm) but quite dense. Lingering in the target area is definitely NOT recommended. To the SW of the island was a flak battery of what appeared to be 88s. All flak is protected by sandbags and/or revetments. The recommended method of attack is for an anti-flak force to proceed the main strike force by 30 seconds. Using rockets at least some of the flak should be taken care of in one pass. Thereafter the main strike force should attack from the SE with targets assigned beforehand. Note: During recon an Arado float plane was shot down, and one Mosquito, piloted by F/O. Merlin, came under attack by two FW190s that were then destroyed by F/Lt Mosie and F/O Madmick. Photographs: Ill post the results afyer ive had my Dinner S! Cheese |
