Mine are :

1. The Battle of Britain
2. The Blue Max
3. Bat*21 (Awesome Flight Footage from the 02 Cessna)
4. Midway

JG53Frankyboy 11-19-2010 02:58 PM

i would ad Aces High and Flight of the Intruder.

Splitter 11-19-2010 03:06 PM

Memphis Belle is in there for me. At times it gave a really good feel for bomber combat.

Splitter

JG53Frankyboy 11-19-2010 03:10 PM

how i could forgett this ?! :D

to ad another one for the Bomber crews : Twelve O'Clock High

and The Dambusters

Splitter 11-19-2010 03:27 PM

The Tuskegee Airman (1995) is one I forgot too. There are some GREAT combat scenes in there along with an important story. The fire scene is....well, you have to see it.

Not a World War 2 film, but how about including Top Gun

zaelu 11-19-2010 05:08 PM

I liked "Les Chevaliers du Ciel" (Sky Fighters) for super flight sceenes with Mirages... a bit a la Top Gun but a bit better... imho.

Noooooo lol. I mean, I liked the movie for what it was and we all walked out of the theater singing "You've lost that loving feeling", but the flight stuff had too many inaccuracies. Like the "Migs". Don't get me wrong, some of the dog fight scenes were very cool, just too much "Hollywood".

I still watch it when it is on though :).

If we can expand it to a series, along with injecting a whole lot of Hollywood, I would put in Ba Ba Blacksheep (or Blacksheep Squadron). In defense of this totally historically inaccurate series/movie, the Corsair is a beautiful bird and they used a lot of WWII footage along with some restored American and Japanese aircraft.

That series is what got me into WWII aircraft so even though it's not accurate, it has a special place in my heart.

AWL_Spinner 11-19-2010 06:18 PM

Top Gun gets a lot of stick but for me the aerial sequences are some of the best ever filmed. I can watch it again and again for the camerawork. I think the F14s vs A4s "Yee Haw! Jester's Dead!" section is probably the highlight. Just awesome - especially on a big screen with the sound cranked up!

Watch any modern CGI-is-King movie and compare.

No, wait, there is no comparison.

Other than that, Dambusters for me. Goosebumps every time.

mazex 11-19-2010 06:37 PM

The Battle of Britain
Dawn Patrol
Blue Max
Les Chevaliers du ciel
Porco Rosso

Xilon_x 11-19-2010 06:39 PM

this is only american and uk movie but you ignore russian movie german movie and italian movie and japanese movie example.
in these films the story is always told by the Allies, and almost all are similar and monotonous, but it would be different if the story in the movies and 'was told by the axis.

+1 for that pick, I love the dogfight visuals, the scene of all the sabres forming up with their contrails behind them still gives me a chill. It has it's cheese moments, but the aerial cinematography was great.

Robtek, I love John Wayne. I love airplanes. But Jet Pilot is maybe the worst John Wayne movie ever! lol. The gal was a babe though :).

Flying Leathernecks is a pretty good Wayne airplane movie. Also Flying Tigers. Both full of Hollywood but good.

Here's one I can't place:
Can't think of the name....Korean war movie. Mickey Rooney, William Holden. Holden has a fuel leak after an attack run and is trying to make it back to the coast. Rooney flies a helicopter in to save Holden in the end and they end up trying to escape the NK's through a series of ditches. Anyone?

Dang....now I just need to convince my wife to watch a few flying flicks this weekend.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet (though not necessarily my favorite)

Flyboys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iadhH...eature=related
Decent amount of flight scenes, not-so-great story.

The Red Baron
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJghJNAjc1k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kHPm...eature=related
Good but few fight scenes, and apparently lame story (never watched it)

The Final Countdown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gChU-...eature=related
So, this modern aircraft-carrier enters some storm which takes it back in time to 1941, and they have the opportunity to stop Pearl Harbor from being attacked. Apparently there were some near-fatal accidents during filming (you can imagine why).

Russian Historical Detective (TV series)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfUaw0BfaZA
Wish I knew more about this one.

Sky Fighters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1ROyKLiLOo
Apparently a good film (in French) and from the looks of it, surreal flying scenes

Flight of the Phoenix (remake)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxfZHP1HHHg
Not great, but fun - I liked it

Battle of Santa Cruz (Japanese Documentary)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QvNQS7HLYE
Well done animation, but I can't speak Japanese :)

I don't know what this is, but I believe it's Japanese as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcTOs9XVUqU

For those we love(Warning:contains gore)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Juic9...eature=related
Good flying scenes, and even bases some effects from wartime footage. Controversial film because it apparently glorifies the Kamikaze suicide attacks.

633 Squadron
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8ARxDGtoPU
Good flying scenes, but lame effects. I don't know how good the movie is.
Anyway, it's also famous for this parody:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OZq-tlJTrU

Tora Tora Tora
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgX1WBf2SjE
Film about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Good overall, way better than the Bruckheimer/Bay version.

Amelia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioZCEpRLpxo

Airplane!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaXvFT_UyI8
Who hasn't seen this one :)

The Rocketeer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNZCK...eature=related
Another Sci-Fi, but it's got interesting flying scenes with a Gee Bee racer.

The Strategic Air Command
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGjyH2ulsCk
With Jimmy Stewart and real B-36s

Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4fVp-hEPOk
Great movie

The Right Stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuR1p7UdI2Y
Great film about the early years of the American Space Race

The Great Waldo Pepper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfZhXhCGwEA
I only vaguely remember seeing this. Apparently it's also a great movie

The Spirit of Saint Louis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pADw8x4zjsk
Again with Jimmy Stewart. Good film.

That's all I got for now

Romanator21 11-20-2010 07:56 AM

A couple more:

Hot Shots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1YyWDtAU-4
Very Funny  I didn't like Part Deux though.

Apocalypse Now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt0xx...eature=related
It has one of the most memorable flying scenes in movie history, and is also a stellar film. (I've only seen the "Redux" version).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKaYOW9zMoY

Mysticpuma 11-20-2010 01:34 PM

Catch 22 (lovely B-25's)

12 O'Clock High (Crash landing a B-17 in the intro....pretty impressive)

Dambusters

Reach for the Sky

Battle of Britain

Cheers, MP

Splitter 11-20-2010 02:53 PM

Romanator, you have some gems there. Anything with Jimmy Stewart. That Robert Redford flick is actually very, very good. I personally liked Flyboys. Final Countdown was fun, sort of a scifi flick.

Apocalypse Now is just a heck of a war movie (most of it) and the choppers coming in over the beach is just a classic scene.

i realy like this topic !
it reminds me a lot of films i saw in the past - long long ago sometimes and therefore forgotten by myself till now :)

another one i remember is "Darling Lili" :D :
It made use of Lynn Garrison’s aviation facility at Weston Aerodrome, Leixlip, Ireland. This collection of World War I replica fighter aircraft, facilities and support equipment was originally put together in support of 20th Century Fox’s 1966 film The Blue Max. The aerial fleet included a sole Caudron 277, two Fokker DR 1s, three Fokker D VIIs, two Se 5as and two Pfalz D IIIs (all full-scale replicas). In addition, the studio contracted with Slingsby Aircraft Ltd to build six 7/8th scale SE 5s (the "Mini SE 5").[1] The Paramount production utilized the assembled aircraft for thousands of flying hours and accumulated hundreds of hours of aerial footage. Pilots were drawn from the Irish Air Corps and civilian circles.

Nice animations, very interesting story, especially the first one.

Another I'd like to add to the list is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pChGZtAwY4

Many don't like this movie, but I think it's awesome. I mean, what's not to like about a 1940's plane in the 1930's, blasting space-pterodactyls, Angelina Jolie, diving underwater to blast more robots, landing in flying-aircraft-carriers, Angelina Jolie, trying to stop an evil genius from destroying the world.... Anyone who thinks it's totally lame, is simply missing the point, I think. Too bad it totally bombed in theaters.

Dark Blue World.. never released in The Netherlands. I bought one from the States...

About other movies,

Personally i dislike the 'dumb' use of movieparts from multiple movies eg. Stealth Fighter : Using parts from flight of the intruder, later it starts with a F14 ..low vis camo scheme..it turns in the Iron Eagle F16's again it's a F14 but now in the high vis scheme and on the return it shows others..uhh.....

I have to add that Red Baron was the worst disappointment of a movie for me. I expected so much more from acting and overall cliche phrases. Not to mention lack of combat scenes.

Sky Fighters (Les Chevaliers du ciel) was also a movie I expected too much of, the only good thing in there is awesome flight footage and a nice soundtrack. Story was nice but the production and overall directing very bad...

Still on my 'to-watch list':

Dark Blue World
The Hunters

JG52Uther 11-22-2010 03:31 PM

Battle of Britain
Dark Blue World
Aces High
Blue Max
Dambusters

I would love to see a good realistic film about Hartmann,or Rudel, but politics probably says no.

Spudkopf 11-23-2010 06:48 AM

Personally I do not like many of the WWII 50/60's era movies for their cavalier distortion of history, which is sad because the naive think these movies as factual, when really they are no more than comic book stories. One such example is Mosquito Squadron, which badly mixes the unrelated experimental Highball squadrons missions with those of the Amiens prison raiders, as such an actual movie about the many exploits of the Prison raiders may never be told.

However there are some brilliant exceptions like the classic “The Dam Busters” and of course the iconic “The Battle of Britain” and “Tora Tora Tora”.

Some other favourites include:
No highway in the sky (Jimmy Stewart, not as a pilot but IMO a great aviation movie)
Strategic Air Command (Jimmy Stewart)
30 Seconds Over Tokyo
Air America
Both versions of Flight of the Phoenix
Catch 22
....just to name a few.

Abbeville-Boy 11-23-2010 08:54 PM

if I may be allowed, he was really a man to admire Jimmy Stewart

In August 1943 he was finally assigned to the 445th Bombardment Group at Sioux City AAB, Iowa, first as Operations Officer of the 703rd Bombardment Squadron and then as its commander, at the rank of Captain. In December, the 445th Bombardment Group flew its B-24 Liberator bombers to RAF Tibenham, Norfolk, England and immediately began combat operations. While flying missions over Germany, Stewart was promoted to Major. In March 1944, he was transferred as group operations officer to the 453rd Bombardment Group, a new B-24 unit that had been experiencing difficulties. As a means to inspire his new group, Stewart flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on numerous missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. These missions went uncounted at Stewart's orders. His "official" total is listed as 20 and is limited to those with the 445th. In 1944, he twice received the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in combat and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He also received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. In July 1944, after flying 20 combat missions, Stewart was made Chief of Staff of the 2nd Combat Bombardment Wing of the Eighth Air Force. Before the war ended, he was promoted to colonel, one of very few Americans to rise from private to colonel in four years.

I think he even had to lie about his weight to get into the services. Then the powers that be didn't want to risk him in combat for fear of bad PR is he was killed or captured. He was the real deal and a true hero.

Don't get me wrong.. I liked The Tuskegee Airmen and most if not all the othr movies mentioned that I have seen... All I need are planes in it.. but these movies had a lot of what I like.. and I have no doubt that Redtails will go down as a great film. Just looking at the cast alone means it will be quality work.IMO DBW was the finest aviation movie I have seen to date..

The Great Waldo Pepper.

Probably the best film about aviation pioneers and superbly and sympathetically acted.

The Aviator

Howard Hughes made air travel comfortable and affordable. He also designed and flew some great aeroplanes, but pork barrel politics and nepotism saw his designs sidelined.

By Dawn's Early Light.

A B52 bomber crew decide not to carry out their assigned mission and turn off a first strike nuclear war before it turns into an all-out exchange. Flawed by the 2 main leads Powers Boothe and Rebecca DeMornay, who were simply...Wooden.

A few more in no particular prefence,

Catch 22 (especially when Milo bombs his own base, because 'it's good for business')
