Today update is about cockpits.
Details, how it looks.
Using mouse is possible to get additional info, or, say, use throttle....
If you'll find any errors - let me know (pay attention: texture with "wait" on Hurricane is not replaced yet on my PC).

my god is this nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Triggaaar 10-22-2010 01:33 PM

I love the lighting and reflections. So we don't see our arms and legs (no problem with that decision), but we see our reflection in the dials - nice. Presumably our reflection will be customizable, but will it move?

Thanks Oleg

McHilt 10-22-2010 01:34 PM

3rd... hmm not bad:cool:

very Nice! and thx

Farmerbarlymo 10-22-2010 01:35 PM

Stunnning cockpits Oleg, just amazing to look at!

Thank you for the update.

T}{OR 10-22-2010 01:35 PM

Love the pilot reflection in the 9th picture! Thanks for the update. :)

Gourmand 10-22-2010 01:36 PM

you can be proud of that
is successful
ironic mode: stop the artwork and give-us-ingame screenshots

it's beautiful, congratulations and thank you! it will be a pleasure to drive it!

PS: If you are looking for beta testers ... we're here! ;)

The Kraken 10-22-2010 01:38 PM

Well, what can I say - beautiful shots, all of them. And it looks like the pilot figure can be toggled on and off at least in the instrument reflections ;)

Great stuff and thanks again for posting!

Flying Pencil 10-22-2010 01:39 PM

COCKPITS!

I will be spending the entire week staring at them!

(I will be going Japan in 5 days, 12 hour flight! Give me something to do now! ;) :D )

Manchenko 10-22-2010 01:42 PM

It is grandiose! Thenks Oleg! But whether there will be that in immediate prospects, execept Britan?

Wow! stunning. Oleg: Thank you for such a good update :)

Flying Pencil 10-22-2010 01:43 PM

I am A-M-A-Z-E-D!

Reflections in glass of rest of cockpit!! That BLOWS away all flight sims!

Question:
Why round, convex glass? I have 4 WW2 instruments myself, all have flat glass. I suspect no instrument had convex glass?

Edit: I mean the result is we can seen most of the cockpit. If they where flat could only see very little. Better to display inside details?

(sorry for oversized letters, carried away. And I am a blabbering ideot! I mind could not coherently type anything!)

Abbeville-Boy 10-22-2010 01:45 PM

nice mr oleg!, feel free to post on that sound file

Holy....those cockpits are amazing! I knew some (spit) from early vids...but seeing those in all their beauty of reflections and dynamic lighting just blows every other flightsim of today to pieces....

GREAT JOB Oleg and team. Thank you!

reflections

Gustang 10-22-2010 01:52 PM

As always, incredible attention to detail that will be much appreciated every time we enter the office. I didn't think that I'd enjoy the full startup procedure so much, but now I'm not so sure. I'm very glad that you decided to make these clickable. It's going to be a joy and a half!

Thanks for taking the time to share the screen shots.

JAMF 10-22-2010 01:52 PM

Cockpits are beautiful! They should be very immersive.

- i am particularly interested in the function of using 3 monitors and being able to set FoV's for them correctly (partic since the monitors might have to be DIFFERENT sizes, which requires a different FoV setting for each monitor)
- the 64 bit question and being able to use more ram is also important

Mr. Maddox, thank you for partially answering my questions in the previous update thread, when you replied to Zapatista. My original questions were more detailed and I had more of them , but if you can't answer them (yet), I'm happy with a "Can not answer now" reply.

- Is surround gaming (3 screens) being taken into account in development? Flexible FoV? Or will there be an option for users wit 3 screens, to render the view through 3 viewports, like it was done in the racing simulation rFactor?

- Will it be possible to use real DeviceLink cockpit dials in MP? As a way to avoid what could be considered cheating by others, the dials which are destroyed in the game, the real cockpit dials get deactivated through DeviceLink (data output = 0).

- Will we see raindrops on the windscreen, like in the original IL2 demo?

- Will we see rivets on the wing and would they be bump- or normal-mapped?

- (answered) Is the SoW engine ready for future 64Bit development, so it can use more than 2GB and load everything into memory on systems that have the memory? Like load all LoD models and all textures into memory to fill up 8GB?

Thanks!

Very nice! Wonderful lighting. Great detail on the chain and cables in the pit. You will allmost forget to look outside. Also great to see the large population on the first shots. Can't wait to get my hands on an example.

BadAim 10-22-2010 01:53 PM

Did anyone notice that some of the bolt heads are actually embossed? The detail and the care is absolutely incredible. I'm just getting used to being blown away.

I see the the pilote reflecting in gauges in the Hurricane but not in the Bf-109. So is this optional or you guys haven't made up your mind of what to do? If this is gonna be part of the game maybe an idea to have the possibility to edit your face in? Just like we already can do in IL2.
So then I can pretend I'm a real pilot.

Really we have more important things to finalize. :)

T}{OR 10-22-2010 02:04 PM

Few questions for You Oleg, if I may:

- if not inappropriate, may I ask if someone else than UbiSoft is the publisher? I am not particularly interested who actually is ;)

and once again, I use the opportunity to copy-paste my questions here that have been unanswered. :)

Quote:

  1. Will there be an option to first load some custom made skins on the server, and then force players (server setting) to first download them before hitting fly or even joining the server. I am asking this because some time when many people load their skins all you see is blank skinned planes flying all over the place. This also affects bandwidth.
  2. Also, I asked this once before - would it be possible (for servers with external views on) to disable the option to browse through enemy planes? More important - to prevent from seeing which type of planes is the opposite side flying (in IL2 this command was 'S')?
  3. How is kill crediting implemented? Will we have shared kills and if so in which way will server determine when it is a shared kill and when it isn't? What about human manned gunners (if I remember correctly, humans will be able to join a human piloted bomber on dog fight servers)?
  4. And last but not least - will there be an option to limit which countries or air forces can be selected per side? This would greatly help admins of the servers which try to simulate a certain scenario or battle - servers that are historically oriented (this goes for question #1 as well).

Thank you.

A not to all of you who usually comment and dislike the current coloring of the ground etc. - Colors in the cockpit seem more than perfect, don't you think the same quality will be applied to the rest of the game? ;)

Viking 10-22-2010 02:06 PM

Insane!

This is impossible!
We are down to nuts and bolts.
Oh boy are we a happy gang to experience this in our lifetime!

Hecke 10-22-2010 02:07 PM

Awesome Pics.

Question:

Is the "weathering" in the cockpit dynamic?
Will I be able to fly in a cockpit that is completely new (without "weathering")?

Skarphol 10-22-2010 02:08 PM

Fantastic pictures!

But one should really not be able to see such a reflection in that gauge in pic nr. 9. The point of view is above the stick, so one should only see the stomac and crotch of the pilot.
Hm. I was the first to whine about this weeks update. Not good.

C_G 10-22-2010 02:08 PM

GORGEOUS!
STUNNING!
Fan-freaking-tastic works too!
As far as I'm concerned the 'pits are DONE. Move on to the rest and release this puppy... the details can wait for a patch or two.

The lighting, the textures... just about everything! This is an exquisite form of torture and I'm becoming a masochist. More! More!

Thank you Oleg and 1C team!

Robert 10-22-2010 02:08 PM

With details such as this, is anyone really concerned that the landscape won't be as well done? The cockpits are truly immersive....stunning.... fan freakingtastic and wicked pissah!

Excellent work ladies and gentlemen. Thanks for the update.

First, Best cockpits I've seen anywhere.

Second, It's convex glass so the reflection is accurate.

We've seen the reflections before (few weeks ago but no-one really picked up on it)

When you put the mouse coursor to the lever or the gauge the popup line show you the purpose (sometime even data, say current pressure or tempetature, after the name of gauge). This will help for the novices to learn anything in cockpit. Or say to understand the purpose of German or Italian (Russian, Japanese, etc) gauges/levers/knobs, etc for English speaking users.

When you put the mouse on the lever and press button you may move the mouse... and the lever will also moving.

I was always short of hardware sliders in IL2 (I have one on the joystick and the other is my mousewheel) and so had to revert to an incremental keypush system to operate my prop-pitch. This had disastrous results in the German planes on full-real however, because unless you were the world champion of the 1980's PC game called Decathlon, keypresses were nowhere near fast enough to stop the engine from over-revving and inevitably seizing. Of course the allied aircraft were far more forgiving.

If we're able to do this on-screen with a mouse drag then I'm one even happier camper.

That is a huge advancement! After years of playing IL-2 I can recognize many or even most gauges in many cockpits but sometimes I'll find myself in a Russian or Japanese plane and there is no way for me to figure out what a certain gauge is aside from wildly guessing. At least with the German ones it sometimes makes sense in English. I'm good at guessing but still...

This is great. Thanks! And thanks for the update...the cockpits are looking superb!

trumps 10-22-2010 02:16 PM

looks bloody fantastic, it always strikes me the difference between the functional offices of the luftwaffe fighters, built obviously as a machine of war, and the nearon kit plane cockpits of the british fighters, they definately have that cottage industry feel to them. it may only be me that sees them in this light but who cares, all that matters is that these screen shots convey that feeling to me perfectly, as if i was sitting in them!

Great work
cheers
Craig

The detail in screenshots = amazing.

Will instrument lighting be available?

I don't know about other countries, most American aircraft (especially Navy instruments were in red).

The night vision thing was a big deal, especially on ships. All Navy aircraft had red instrument lighting.

Mr Maddox you and your team are simply awesome. I could see myself flying around for months just looking at everything, not having to shoot at anything. But Im sure I will, probably my own side just to watch things explode. Do you think that if VORTEX hasnt been modeled yet that maybe it will be in the future. Again thank you and yes you are the man!!!!!!

Will it be possible to turn off this popup line (perhaps with a toggle on/off button)?

It sounds very useful when learning the cockpit of an aircraft, but once it has been learned I would like to be able to turn the popup line off.

Thankyou

yes in difficulty settings

katdogfizzow 10-22-2010 02:30 PM

Absolutely amazing, I hope I don't start drooling too much when looking at all those instruments this is going to be heaven on earth:grin:

In my opinion, there can be a little enhancement with the additional control description/instruction,
for example, the font can be gothic when in a german plane, and this "Instruction words" layer needs some decoration I think, just a blank/white colour is too dull, some pattens may be good foil to those "Words".

This will help for the novices to learn anything in cockpit. Or say to understand the purpose of German or Italian (Russian, Japanese, etc) gauges/levers/knobs, etc for English speaking users.

When you put the mouse on the lever and press button you may move the mouse... and the lever will also moving.

THANKS OLEG! A million times.....

You've given us "Clickable Cockpits".

Thanks from myself and all TX squadron!

Will instrument lighting be available?

I don't know about other countries, most American aircraft (especially Navy instruments were in red).

The night vision thing was a big deal, especially on ships. All Navy aircraft had red instrument lighting.

Yes, there is a picture of a night cockpit in an older update.

chiefrr73 10-22-2010 02:39 PM

Thanks for the update, Oleg!!
The cockpits are looking very realistik to me and i m surre, the rest of the simulation will look the same, you proved it allready with IL 2. I have no doubt that you and the team learned from the good/ bad things of IL 2. Keep up the good work!
One question: will there be humans on ships? Maybe not at the release, but on addons.
Have a nice week.

Just to show that the work over lighting tuning is still there... and due this tuning was changing textures.

So finally you all will get really close to photorealistic picture.

Wow....this is amazing. And this is in game footage?

JG53Frankyboy 10-22-2010 02:51 PM

absolutly gorgeous !!!

just one "question":
when the 109E got thumplevers on the throttle to control the manual pitch , wasnt the lever at the instrument panel sealed over ?

the picture shows both.

Mice....There aren't enough smilies to express it all i'm afraid.. Keep posting these impressive updates. I like the way the rivers show up, it does getting more and more photo realistic!

Btw, how does the oil show up on this new pit model? Will it distort the shadows? If there is such a picture..sorry for missing that in the huge threads.

kammo 10-22-2010 02:54 PM

Wow!!! Some very serious stuff. The last shot on page 10 is just what Oleg has allways promised!

Thank you very much Mr. Oleg and Mr. Luthier. Very much appreciated Your active communication with tha community!
