Thanks mr maddox

**wall of text inbound**

I have had a few years break from the IL2 series, but last weekend i installed the original one and then 1946 + addons etc

I was a Luftwaffle driver before, but this time i told my self to go a new way. I began the IL2 (sturmovik) leningrad campaign. It was hard to get the rust of, but im hanging in there and keep completing the missions.

Today i had the moment that realy send me back to the first time i loaded up IL2 game. I was attacking a German base and noticed a German fighter engaging my wingman. I noticed the bullets bouncing of the IL2 like fireworks.

The same time this happend i was shooting planes on the ground with some werry angry German AA gunners...This sight...An Il2 under attack with bullets bouncing all over, explosions on the ground and flak hitting me plus the sceaming and stuf over the radio gave me the chills, just like i had the werry first time i loaded up a IL2 game...

Im back in the cocpit now, and found the reson why i transfered from CFS series to IL2 series...

When you play a game alot, sometimes you forget the first feelings and impressions of it. My years off have givin me a second chanse to notice the detail level of these flight sims.

So thanks mr maddox, for creating the IL2 series

**small ps**
can anyone explain to me how i set everything to max in the config "GFX" i forgot how to do it lmao

I noticed Forest=4, we have this also? :D Highest in ReadMe was 3. But gonna give that a try for sure! :) Also if you use LandGeom=2 with VisibilityDistance=3, that would not give the full range 73km? I have used VisibilityDistance=3 with LandGeom=3 after 4.09m. Thank you for posting the conf.ini ..need to try some of those settings.

Forest 4 here is for replacement of old Il-2 original 2D+ trees in cities by 3D.

other settings - that is for sure Ok for my Sony notebook (2 core with 8 RAM, etc but with not so powerful video card).

Thank you for the clarification. Will test the Forest=4 as I get home soon. Another day repairing planes behind ;)

KOM.Nausicaa 10-19-2010 12:46 PM

For anyone having the computing power to set horizon to 72km, I would highly recommend to do it. It changes the immersion immensely to look far, in all cases, but especially when flying high.

I don't remember everything already. There is other type of water explosions, smokes of ships, etc that eating power.
I have on my notebook long time ago installed version and in time upgraded by DT add-on.

I even forgot that we did already these trees in cities and was asking to correct it DT team...but.... Martin Kubani reminded me that we did it already ourselves in the past... and that I had old INI file :):):)

I simply too long time already on BoB... with its engine and modeling of aircraft and ground units... and the things became way more complex that to remeber everything :)

So... I think you was opening some good discuission and community will help you and some others to find the best posssible that already is in Il-2.

Trees in cities that was tha thing that disspointed me in the past very much... and not all know how to set it for the best looking image that really alllow Il-2 engine comparing to default settings.

I think Oleg refers to Effects=2 in conf.ini but last time I tested them, the frame rates dropped sharply and there were flashy textures in smokes etc. And I think long time ago Oleg said Effects=2 is not recommended.

Just a small joke to make everyone spill their coffee on a boring Tuesday afternoon.
Oleg has an amazing sense of humour :D

It's interesting to see his conf.ini. Looking at his picture of Il-2 just shows how well the game has lived for 10 years. Even today it still looks very good graphically. Notice the realistic colours, and now compare to that in WoP or that Condor game. It's staggering really.
SoW will be just the same, I am sure. Compare the first edition of Il-2 to 1946 and if the same were to be done to SoW in 10 years time, one can't even imagine how good it'll be.

Forest=4 ???
Effects, you go up to 2

philip.ed 10-19-2010 04:46 PM

Effects=2 gives massive FPS loss though. I recall that it was never fully optimized, but I am not 100% sure on this.

Flanker35M 10-19-2010 05:04 PM

S!

Yes, effects on 2 causes a heavy drop on FPS on intensive scenes. Effects 1 is good balance. Forest 4 is a new setting that should change trees if reading Oleg's answer. Added as they were not happy with the original ones. Will test them more in Kuban map, there is a town handily nearby when press fly :)

IceFire 10-19-2010 05:10 PM

Does Forrest 4 affect the two tree objects (165 and 166 I think are the numbers) that are placeable in the FMB and make them invisible? That was always a problem in the past for having the enhanced trees.

Aviar 10-19-2010 05:38 PM

I noticed Forest=4 right away. I always thought '3' was the highest setting. I just tried setting it to '4' and
started up the game. I quit the game and checked out the conf. The '4' was automatically reset to '3'.

Has anyone been able to run Forest=4...?

Thanks Oleg....I see what you mean now. There is an ADDITIONAL Forest setting in your OpenGL settings. I added the second Forest setting and '4' works now.

However, setting '3' and '4' still have the old bug where objects 165 and 166 (a small group of 4 trees) are not visible to the player (in Perfect mode), but you can still be destroyed if you collide with them.

I'll just stick to setting '2' unless this bug is eventually fixed.

Forest=4

I reverted back to Forest=3. Finnily enough Forest at 3 has LESS effect on FPS than on 2 for some reason.

It is odd, i found this too. I'm not complaining though; forest-3 looks better!

I'm gonna sound like such a noob but I only bought 1946 last week... Long story. First impressions are.. where do I start!? It's huge! I'm gonna need years with this so it's ok Oleg, take as long as you want with SoW!- I'm joking- (I was beginning to wonder if SoW stood for Sick of Waiting....).

Back to the noobishness...

In the conf.ini is 1 better than 3 or is it the other way around? and what effect does changing the video options in game have on the conf.ini, if any?

Thanks

SlipBall 10-19-2010 09:51 PM

3 would be better, demand more of your system:grin:

Just for saying thanks too
thank you for your game, which is always fascinating
Thank you for your answers on the forum.

thank you for the work accomplished

Actually Forest=3 has less impact than 2 for some strange reason. I tested this on a friend's rig that is a Pentium 4 at 2.7GHz and a nVidia 285GTX. Used same map (Kuban) and flew over Novoryssiysk with FPS counter on. 2 made a hit on FPS but 3 almost none?!

Interesting, maybe 3 makes better use of the GPU than 2.

The main issue with Forest=3 , as stated above, is that certain tree objects become invisible, especially around runways, which can kind of ruin your day and is very annoying for mission builders wanting to "decorate" airfields.

Flanker35M 10-20-2010 10:11 AM

S!

That is an issue maybe TD could look into in the future patches? I have not encountered invisible trees except the forests at certain angle.

ok, winny,

conf.ini vs ingame options screen:
Any change the options screens adjusts values in the conf.ini.
In conf itself you can adjust it more precisely, plus certain values are not available through the ingame screen(like wide screen settings).
So if you decide to work with the conf, you should never ever again use the ingame screen as any changes there influence all kinds of settings in the conf - and might set them back.

values:
0: off
1: on
2/3/4: generally, the higher the better (water: ATI users can only use 2, same effect as 3 for NV)

If you start to play around with conf, make sure you copy it to a safe place first.

When changing the values, you usually don't know how bad the fps drop, therefore I suggest you test it with the "black death" .ntrk.:
In game press shift+tab, then enter:
fps START SHOW
actual fps will be displayed on top of screen
[to turn it off: fps STOP SHOW]

This link is google translated, but I think you can get the necessary informations out of it.
http://translate.google.ch/translate...n&hl=&ie=UTF-8

Concerning your system, I really don't think you can max out too many things. There weren't much infos about your GPU, but it sounds rather weak.
Well, you'll see - trial and error. ;)

edit: while searching for your gpu and il2 I found this site: http://www.theblackfedora.com/index....d=17&showall=1
Awesome amount of info!

Thanks.. it is a bit weak, I'm waiting for some SoW specs before I spend any money!
I'll have a play around.

Wow... I know what I'll be doing later, thanks again.

IceFire 10-20-2010 01:58 PM

What does LandGeom=3 do? I checked mine and even with my settings at the highest possible... I have only 2 there. I changed it to 3 and it doesn't look any different...

Flanker35M 10-20-2010 03:04 PM

S!

LandGeom=3 enables the longest visibility range of 72km together with VisibilityRange=3. This only on Perfect settings.

Maybe I'm stupid - I still don't get it.

I'll await Aviar's reply.
The way I have read into it, you need to put two lines for the forest setting...

Extremely useful thread and thanks to every one for adding their comments to squeeze the best out of the game graphics.

And a big thanks to Oleg for his input and creating a fantastic SIM in IL2.....(but not for smoking my ass with a FW  ......I assume he is the on-line player with the HL call sign 'OLeg Maddox'......)

Alpha has it dead right. Just tried this out, and forest=3 gives 3D trees in towns as most of us should be aware, but forest=4 seems to roughly double the quantity. Also the number of 3D trees in open country seems to go up.
This was a quick tryout though so can anyone verify?
Cheers.

philip.ed 10-20-2010 07:20 PM

Cheers Alpha ;)

Bit of a wild goose-chase for me. When I use the settings below, the first Forest=4 setting reverts back to Forest=3 as soon as I exit the game, with no difference at all in the trees while the config still says Forest=4 during game-play.

Same here, just checked. First one back to =3 and Bottom one stays at =4
Never mind! I can't see the woods for the trees anyway according to my missus!

swiss 10-21-2010 12:40 AM

+1, even with two lines of forest

Try right-clicking on the conf.ini file, select properties, then check the 'read only' box, then select 'ok' or 'apply'. I found this seems to make the settings stick.

HundertneunGustav 10-21-2010 10:43 AM

Same here...
*Thx Oleg!*

still remember the first screenshot i saw of il2FB. a Thud over reflective water shooting the inner Guns.

Its been an amazing trip so far.:)

Thanks for that, yes, the settings now stick. There is however still no difference between Forest=4 and Forest=3, in terms of tree image quality or amount. Am happy enough with them as they are anyway, so no loss.
