Identify this
I was recently flying around Deal in Kent, and was traveling along the coastline when I found this.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/1...irdsofprey.png Its a cannon obviously, a little charred. Any known history on this? |
I saw that one too.
Dunno what it is, but I will try to make it look like dkwookies sheep during the weekend. |
its not winnie or pooh?the channel guns ,id be impressed if it was
|
i'm with dave...channel gun for shipping or AA. there was a documentary on 2 guys digging around an old RAF airfield. they came up with a couple gun emplacements.....same, same??
|
You will fond it some few miles up the valley from dover. On the westernside. A bit far from the channel to be a channel gun.

ok....Bofors 40mm AA. did a quickie search and came up with these. close enough for government work.
|
Go look at it in game. Just follow the coast north untill you see a black dot. Its not directly on the shore, about 5 B-17s away. This gun is burned and ruined, and has a breach. There is only one. It seems to small to be a coastal gun. It looks like a 76mm anti tank gun.

in 1940 we only had 2 guns capable of hitting france ,they were 14.5 inch
they would of been in the dover area, they took out a german channel gun in france, aa gun sites were in fours or eights,in 1940 mostly 4.5 inch pic 1 is whinnie ,pic 2 is a heavy aa site in essex with 8 emplacements i visited last year, still with wooden ammo racking(pic3) |

i will try to dig into this this week. but there is another option...it was a training gun or site. not far from where i live they used to train artillery troops and test guns....shooting them into the horizontal shaft of an old mine.
|
Thats one way of looking at it.

i had a look,as korsakov said fly north along the coast until your wings are level with sandwich on the map, look down to the left its 100 yards in from beach, its tiny and broken
maybe a 2 pounder,i landed next to it,but screenshot wont upload (edit took camera phone shot of screen ) |
The barrel is too long and the shield too round like to be a 2 or 18 pounder. Its no howitzer for sure.
|
i couldnt see a shield, maybe it symbolises the withdrawal from dunkirk??
|
The shield is there, just need to get a Po-2 and fly low and around it.
|
is this a different one from the one kav was talking about?
"You will fond it some few miles up the valley from dover. On the westernside. A bit far from the channel to be a channel gun. " AA guns had shields...look at the one pic of that bofors 40. |
The shield is enclosed so it cant point towards the air. Thats why I ruled it out. You can make out a viewing port on the picture, most AA guns didn't really need this unless used as a anti tank weapon.
|
im lost, the one in my shot has no sheld,im parked next to it,but this one wouldn't be the one kav mentioned
|
You took your shot from the side.

another view with spit for size comparison ,and a french puteaux 25mm which looks a bit like it
|
Nice close up with the Spitfire. Its a Pak40! Has to be, perhaps dropped in?
|
from what i have read from around 1917 defenses were set up from dover up to sandwich. most were 40 bofors and 3.7 and 4.5 guns. the one dave found looks closer to the 3.7. with a muzzle break...the 4.5 has uprights on either side of the barrel. other than that i cant find who other than a scottish outfit was in the area. it was on a direct course from france to london so could have been along one of the "buzzbomb alleys". perhaps the devs just put a gun there because there was one in the area. here's a couple of sites with pics. might try bombing it next time and see what happens...easter egg??
that is a better pic, dave. hmmmm http://www.accurate-armour.com/ShowP...7&product=1834 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-GhqhUKRVU http://www.accurate-armour.com/ShowP...17&product=676 |
by the size of it ,look likes a small field weapon
