AndyJWest 08-12-2010 02:43 PM

Yes, the Savoia marchetti 80 is a beauty. Actually, according to Italian Wikipedia, it is an S 80 bis - the original was single engined I think:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savoia-Marchetti_S.80
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savoia-Marchetti_S.80_bis

I like the undercarriage retraction mechanism - very simple, but elegant.

Friendly_flyer 08-12-2010 09:49 PM

The Italians made some amazingly beautiful sea-planes in the 1930'ies. Some of them are easily contenders in the "best looking plane" competition.

There was a S.55 that was used in civil role here called Jahú.

I guess another of this plane was used during the 1932 Revolution.
BTW,was it still used in WWII or I am wrong?

Italy had some quite interesting airplanes in the 20s,30s and in 40s.
One of them, was the Ca.60,a house with wings:

Re.2007 never existed as far as i know. A few older books do mention it as a fact but it was proven as a post-war forgery. There are no photos of that allegedly completely finished airframe save for the engines, nor any other trace of material evidence it ever existed - only some blueprints that were drawn in 1960's...
http://www.modelingmadness.com/revie...wanta2007d.jpg
VERO o FALSO? true or false?
I now I'll prove it.

http://i.imagehost.org/0603/Re_2007.jpg

The Reggiane Re.2007 is a rather mysterious subject, and after more than 65 years, little has survived to this day, we know that was a design for a jet fighter began in the final days of the Italian Regia (1942), provided an engine of German origin, namely the Junkers Jumo 004B ... the same as the Me.262 (which only had two).
With slightly swept wings, the real contribution of the longitudinal arrangement seems Re.2007 air intake, the cab and the engine in the same axis, by passing the flow of air around the cabin which was a good solution aerodynamic heritage undoubtedly the Campini Caproni, which is now quite obvious, the plans for the German fighters of that time, although in many ways more advanced, do not use this formula (presempio, often mounted on the cabin air intake)
The prototype almost ready, do not get to mount the Junkers Jumo 004B in the final days of World War II, and no one knows the ultimate fate of this prototype, perhaps destroyed and lost his material ..... o. ... Maybe .................................

the project and mysteriously reappeared here:http://www.cmpr.it/Aerfer%20Sagittario%202/Aerfer.htm
http://www.cmpr.it/Aerfer%20Sagittar...a-1°s-035.jpg

Aerfer the Sagittarius-2 has nothing similar with Reggiane Re.2007, it's much less seen from outside and inside. In fact if you compare two sections of their planes can see the radical differences in design, clean Re.2007 a lineal arrangement of air intakes behind the cab and the engine Junkers Jumo 008B in the fuselage, L 'Aerfer Sagittarius-2 in return, with a curious arrangement "Diagonal" Rolls Royce Derwent engine-9, with the exhaust heat under the floor of the cabin (the pedals of the pilot dangerously close "cm" of the burners of the Derwent-9).
The temporal distance of the two projects and more than a decade, it is clear that the origins of Aerfer are completely different, if anything, the only similarity is that all the two aircraft segment of the same nationality.

FIAT G55
Realizing that one of the main problems was the lack of the Royal hunting power of their radial engines, the Fiat G.50 Fiat gave the redesign, we think in various engines including the promising Fiat A.38, the Cuale was proposed for what would be the future G.55; 's A.38 was an engine with pistons in the V and about 1250 Hp. to increase the effectiveness
he proposed a solution to counter the double helix (about 1940-41 )
later with the arrival of this engine DB.605 Made in Italy was left aside.

I would like to see the Italian fighters handle a bit better. I mean didn't they call the MC205 the Italian Spitfire. Just a thought.

Daniël 03-09-2011 02:31 PM

The Re.2007 looks like a F-86 Sabre.

Sternjaeger 03-09-2011 03:02 PM

the G.55 cockpit photos in colour are actually of the rebuild made starting from a G.59 fuselage, so they might not be 100%, esp. the zinc chromate yellow used for the interior.

i was under the same impression, based mainly on pilots' accounts. But if you look at numbers (which can give a rough idea of turning ability) :

SpitV:
wing loading 131,5 kg/m^2
power loading 0,40 hp/kg
power loading with boost 0,50 hp/kg

M.C.202:
wing loading 174,2 kg/m^2
power loading 0,40 hp/kg

(got the data from hardball's aircraft viewer, hope its right)

it doesn't seem so unreasonable that the spit behaves better in both sustained and istantaneous turn. In this game even the 109 F2 and F4 turn better than the Folgore.

109F2
wing loading 172,9 kg/m^2
power loading 0,43 hp/kg

And add the slats to that. Again the question it's not that simple but i gives an idea. For comparison:

P40E
wing loading 177,7 kg/m^2

Which seems worse than the bf. but you can read noumerous accounts of p40 pilots outturning 109s in north africa. makes you wonder if the italian planes handled really that good or it was a matter of pilot.

Here's a beautiful post-war aircraft, Fiat G.59:
http://forums.techguy.org/attachment...6/fiat-g59.jpg
One of those what-ifs that actually came true, namely, what if the Fiat G.55 had a Merlin engine. Less beautiful than the G.55 though, IMO.

Sternjaeger 03-09-2011 08:17 PM

yep, I talked to pilots back in Italy who flew both the G.59 and G.55 (and Mustang too): all of them confirmed that the G.55 was sleeker, but the G.59 was more docile, and above all never seemed to stall! The wings were so well aerodynamically balanced and designed that the plane would actually enter a slow glide and never drop a wing or make nasty surprises.

Xilon_x 03-10-2011 04:46 AM

I noticed this:
many holders of fiat g 59 Australian pilots are relevant today.

However it is not 'regular place in il-2 sturmovik the Fiat G59-2 is an airplane designed shortly after the end of World War II.

Strange,Fiat G.55 with two propellers, like the late Spitfires?I would say that wasn't the G.55,rather the CR 44,but now things are messed up.

No way the MC.205 is the Italian Spitfire. In IL2 it flies like s...
Also,I saw somewhere luftwaffe officers described the Re.2005 performance as awesome, the G.55 as good, and MC.205 as regular.

The Re 2007 strongly resembles a F-84 with MiG-9 like cannons.

Despite what people say,you don't say stronzata at all.You could be useful as Oleg and TD RA advisor.

Oh,and what is the use for the pen at the G.59 cockpit?

TheGrunch 03-11-2011 10:58 AM

The G.59 would be a nice '46 plane for the ICAF/ACI, that's for sure. :)

Sternjaeger 03-11-2011 02:06 PM

it's a big fat bird if you ask me, but really docile :)

lil trivia: the plane that strafes the submarine in the movie U-571 is actually an Italian G.59 which was repainted in dark green for the movie.. it really looked sexy!

Nicknamed “Gobbo Maledetto” (Italian for “Damned Hunchback”) for its distinctive fuselage “hump”, the S.79 “Sparviero” is one of the most famous Italian aircraft of WWII. It was originally designed as a passenger transport aircraft and was used by the Regia Aeronautica in the bomber and torpedo-bomber roles. The torpedo bombers had a dangerous mission and suffered heavy losses during the war. S.79s had to fly at low level straight and level towards the ships before the torpedo was launched, and so were targeted by every available anti-aircraft weapon. Many were hit and were compelled to ditch in the Mediterranean Sea, and some of the most heroic actions of the Italian Air Force in WWII were performed by S.79 pilots whose courage was acknowledged by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.
Recently Simone Bovi met Luigi Gastaldello, a former S.79 pilot, WWII veteran, in his welcoming house in Vicenza, Italy, where the former pilot of the Italian Air Force (32 years of service, more than 3700 hours of flying, a war on his logbook and the memories of the passage from unstable biplanes to fast jets) recalled the most thrilling missions he flew against the Royal Navy during the Second World War:

Eric Schilling posted about that being done in dives, same way that AVG P-40's and later Pacific War P-40's out turned Japanese A/C more nimble at lower speeds and in level flight.

I also read of p40 pilots in mediterranean who were teached to turn fight with the 109s but not with the macchis.
Also I remember of a P40 pilot telling that he had a fight with a 202 and was outturned.

Caproni Ca.183 bis
http://warandgame.files.wordpress.co.../ca1832sml.jpg
In 1942 Caproni began construction on a high-altitude fighter using prop and jet thrust. The Caproni CA 183bis had a DB 605 of 1,250 HP in the nose driving two three-blade contra-rotating props with a 700 HP Fiat A.30 radial behind the cockpit driving a Campini compressor expected to furnish a 60 MPH boost of jet thrust for an optimistic maximum speed of 460 MPH with a range of 1242 miles. One 20 mm was to be in the prop hub with four more in the wings. Weight was to be 16,538 lbs. with a 48-foot wingspan.

The CA 183 was not all that complicated though performance expectations seems optimistic.

Engine: 1x Alfa-Romeo “Tifone”(Daimler-Benz DB-605) making 1,250 hp driving a six blade contrarotating propellor.

1x FIAT A.30 radial piston engine making 700 hp driving the Campini engine

Weight: Loaded 16.538 lb

Maximum Speed: 460 mph / 520 mph with “Thermojet”

Range: 1,242 miles

Crew: 1

Armament: 4x 20 mm cannons in the wings and 1x 30 mm cannon between the cylinder banks of the engine.

The Italians already had knowledge of the German jets through their Rome-Berlin pact and worked together at Riva del Garda (Re- named the Hermann Goering Institute) on advanced jet designs that included a Turboproietti Jet Round Bomb (Italian V-1 type unmanned weapon) and a disc aircraft with two slung turbojets, various rim intakes for another internal engine, a domed canopy, and two canted tailfins. This was only discovered recently after the designer died and the plans were discovered in his apt. Apparently, this is probably what Mussolini referred to as the “Piastra di Volo” (Flying Plate) design.

The Germans for their part provided Italy with DB engines that improved their fighter and bomber designs of Fiat, Macchi, and Savoia- Marchetti. Jumos were on order for the Re.2007 and Piaggio’s chief designer D’Ascanio requested information on the BMW 003 for a radical jet helicopter he was designing.

But the war ended for Italy and a lot of documents went missing or destroyed. D-Ascanio postwar experimented with a turbine helicopter, but is better known as the inventor of the Vespa moto-scooter! Most of the other manufacturers either went under or became merged in jet manufacture.
