I think it's time for us to just sit down and wait for SoW to arrive.....
.....as, lets be honest we have watched all the updates and then the requests for this bolt to be in this place, and that smoke to be 2% more volumetric, etc, etc, but let just stand back and see what we have.
For years IL2 has been the No.1 WW2 flight-sim in many forums and magazines. There, in my opinion, has not been a simulation that comes anywhere close to matching the online and offline needs of players interested in WW2 aviation. We now have the experience of IL2 that can be taken by Oleg Maddox and 1C as a beta for the work they are now doing on SoW. All the things that we have seen as wrong can be corrected, all the additions we asked for can now be considered and all the time that would have been spent on updates has now be taken over by TD. Basically, it's now at the stage of being so-long in development that (again my opinion) the testing stage is now thoroughly underway with place-holder graphics being stripped out slowly and replaced with the new graphics. Of-course there is still work to do, but surely now is the time to let the work be finished, get the Sim on the shelves, and then start the new round of requests that can be looked at once we know the intended capabilities of the new Sim. I appreciate the updates, but I don't see them as anymore than just that. They are not flyable demo's, so I can't comment on them with authority, they are just examples of graphics....that is all. The Spitfire cockpit video is the one that I still return to when I set my hopes on this Sim andI think now is the time to just sit back and wait, as hollering and putting anymore requests, well I just don't see how they will benefit the team working on SoW. I would make another assumption that whatever is there by now, is what will be coming out on initial release, but future developments are something that I certainly hope can include expansion packs for the Pacific and P-47 and P-51 era....but that is the future and for now, I'll wait for Oleg's Present.....that Present being the Present of SoW! Cheers, MP |

Yes, movies or even a demo would be better - of course, there would be always something better. But especially when you look at the screenshots over a few weeks, you see some very interesting changes in various aspects. This is what the updates are about, that things are coming together, that things change in the minor and large scale, that we're getting closer to a final top-of-the-line-product, not to tell you, how much fun it would be for you to fly the simulation personally. I hope to see something like ED's producers notes to do this job, or photo/video-reports like in the early days of IL2. |
When we start seeing videos/movies you can count on the SOW being close to release.
IMO, videos tell too much. That is why I would think Oleg hasn't released any. The Spit release was unauthorized, and Oleg just went with it. The release for BOB SOW should be within the year, and that only leaves 5 months. Seriously, the way the world economy is going at this point it would be smart to release the SOW soon. Many people will need better systems to use the SOW. If people don't have jobs they sure can't afford new systems. It doesn't make sense to buy an SOW, if you can't enjoy it's best features. Oleg really needs to get his boxes printed. ;) |
i prefer wait another long time for a good SoW simulator and most airplane and most physic effect dm dinamic cinematic terrain sky sea and object.
i prefer wait wait wait and pacience for a very good WORLD STANDART PRODUCT. SoW-battle of brittain SoW-battle of atlantic SoW-mediterrain SoW-pacific Sow-operation barbarossa Sow- korea Sow-vietnam Sow-spanisc civil war Sow-campain of Italy Sow-battle of fokland Sow-Sow Sow again again most most mission and operation for all players in all world. |

When we see a dedicated website I think we can say that SOW is close, and Oleg has already said that it is being worked on.
|
Oleg's not going to release it until he's happy that it's all OK - AFAIK this was one of the major reasons why he had fall outs with UBI, who wanted to dump the market with unfinished games (as most of us have experienced ;) )
I'm happy to wait for perfection  |
I agree solidly with the first post. Oleg has gathered enough feedback over the past five years that there is little more which we can suggest (although I'm sure there is some brilliance left to be mined).
Anyhow, after ten years I'm quite willing to let Oleg do his work. For the first six years or so I hung on every update, but I've reached the mystical point of Mystic Puma about a year ago. I am contented. |

Yes, we just have to wait, which is sometimes the hardest thing to do :)
I wait best for things I don't know are coming however we've known this is coming for so long that we've all become very impatient. That's just being human. Unfortunately, being on the internets is not like being human and so people come here to vent emotive thoughts in ways they would never employ in real life. I've waited what - 7 years? was this announced in 2003 or 2005? I can't remember. As frustrated as anyone else, I continue to wait and look forward to a new Oleg Maddox product. I'd rather we already had it, but I'd like to think I've some appreciation of how complex the development is and the difficulties that have been experienced. Now it's just my opinion, but I thought IL-2 was quite good. Perhaps the majority of you didn't like it. But given what we got with IL-2, I'm totally stoked about a new game from Mr Maddox and am sure it'll be great. Maybe IL-2 wasn't good enough for many of you, but I was very impressed indeed. I hope he realises (and I'm sure he does, actually) that the most critical opinions tend to come from those most oblivious to the constraints of the medium worked upon and the time frame existing within which to produce said work. But then remember: it's easy to pick faults. Nothing's perfect, so there's always scope to complain. It's a weak state of being, mind: to look for flaws when one could be appreciating the bigger (and much more beautiful) big picture. Look for the beauty in life. Appreciate the positive. Don't be arseholes. Or as they say round my parts: Wise up to yourselves! |
Oleg did make promises but there was a gap when 1C ventured ( a distraction from the promise) into the ..whats-it-ps2/wii/some-other-hand-held-rubbish to make a quick buck extension from IL2.
I think he burnt his hands here, as flight sims are not FPSs and you need a good rig to really enjoy the sim. So maybe he likes us again ;) |
I think I'm gonna have problems sleeping that long..

Oleg has never actually promised but he has said in interviews that SOW would be released for the 2010 anniversary of BOB, he then went onto say that maybe it would go gold before but thousands would be playing by October. But he didn't promise it. I think in future Oleg should just say its done when its done, it would be better for him and 1C, because people are bound to ask questions, i remember when it was stated on these very forums that we would have a dedicated SOW website by the end of December 2008, or when Oleg said we would get system specs in may 2008, if you make these commets then you are bound to be measured by them, what i do think is unaacceptable is to not give an explanition as to why these dates were missed it wouldn't take much would it, just a quick sorry guys we are not there yet type of comment. Im 100% certain that Oleg will not make is intended September release date but i feel sure we will get the same as normal i.e no comment. And when anyone dares to ask the question of what as happened then they get flamed on here by the fanbois, and so it all starts again. But it is all getting rather boring now.
|
Yes, Tree. You are absolutely right. It would be much better if Oleg didn't say anything at all, post no screenshots and make no official statements.
After all, nobody could complain about always the same looking screenshots, nobody could take hints as promises or confirmation of personal expectations, nobody could wrongly quote allegedly statements and nobody would have a reason to be upset. Right? |

Oleg is much more responsive to us than he has been in a long time. Luthier is available as well. These are two very good signs. |
I'm trying to get the point over here guys that it really is a case of "going with the flow". I'm sure Oleg has all the key parts he intends to work on for the release already in place, it's just a case of putting them all together and then giving it to us (well offering to us, as to give means it would be free ;) ).
I would think that as-much as we would all like to see this aircraft, or that effect, etc,etc the focus is now on getting what there is into a sale-able product and then internal Alpha/Beta and finally ready for Gold. What I tried to make clear in the OP was, look, we are all excited about this, if we weren't we wouldn't be on the forums checking the status regularly, but there is no-point whining or complaining about what you would like to see, as whatever is going to happen...will happen. The updates are interesting, but only video showing the sim 'in-action' makes me interested as I can get an idea of what will be in the future release. Images give you an idea of what visually there will be, but consider the Spitfire video. You could see the aircraft shake, the shadows move, the water shine, all in real-time. A still image just can't convey that? So while there can be complaints of how tracer looks and how flames aren't right (not my op.) only a video can show how the flames and smoke move, how the tracer looks, how the clouds move (I guess) and if there will be dynamic weather (I'm sure I heard you would take-off in sunlight then roll into a storm?). But ultimately we are the consumers and Oleg is the supplier and until the sim is released we may as well just sit down, look at the Friday update, drink an ice-cold beer and look forward to the Simulation event of the decade (just not sure which decade though!) ;) Cheers, MP |
I sat down and waited 5 years ago. Maybe I should get up?
 2 weeks lads. |
Arise Sir Philip of Ed! ;)
Now, off to the fridge and crack open a cold one! |

Anyhow other than that I hope your well feuerfalke Ive not seen you around in a while. |
The talk between Oleg and Luthier is really excellent. I like Luthier's talk; it's easy to see what the team are thinking through his posts. Additionally he's probably hurrying the team up so he can crack on with Korea.
|
Thanks god oleg and his team working for a new good sim... but unfortunatelly we have no any alternative here in the world. After those pics, we are going to be more impatient. This is oleg's crime; he has transformed me (and seems that some of us also) into a simulation monster when il2 released. Thats why only pics are going to be boring day after day. Lets pray for oleg and his team for finish their job quickly. :-P
|
I´m starting to get used to the idea that SoW will be the sucessor for IL2,althought IL2 still have the crown.
I wonder what will come after SoW.Oleg could try a Cold War sim. MiG-21 x F-4,Tu-95 x B-52,A-4 x Su-7... |

How long would it take from handing over the sim to the publishers so they can put in their DRM and copy protection etc and the product going gold?
Sounds like a great time to take a holiday to me! Of course I am being overly optimistic and have often been told I live in a different world to normal people. (generally by my wife!) Cheers! |

All that stuff is so old, been asked and told so many times. Oleg will enlarge the BOB SOW, but it will come with addos. That is the successful way IL2 did it. Why change the method when it works so well. Just saying, many of us have been doing IL2 around 10 years. There have been hundreds of thousands of postings from interested users. Go to Ubisoft.com and check out the IL2 forums. You can probably run search terms and fill your library of IL2 with stuff most of us are no longer interested to think about, much less discuss. |

Oleg can try WWI. |
Wait, are we doing wish lists?
SoW: BoB (might as well) SoW: Korea (hell, yeah + carrier ops) SoW: Spanish Civil War (this is going to be a PITA, 50 different flyables req) SoW: International Rescue- Thunderbirds are SoW! (I'm not trolling, I really want to see this) SoW: Blitzkrieg/Battle of France SoW: Flying Tigers SoW: Suez Canal Okay, I'm done for the next 10 years. WWI we can leave in RoFs capable hands, the modern stuff with DCS. There's a gap for Vietnam, Yankee Air Pirate is very good, but would love to see with decent sim engine. |
I can't wait for :
SoW-world at war SoW-Modern Warfare SoW-Modern Warfare 2 SoW-Modern Warfare again SoW-Warfare that's modern etc.... Seriously though, i think that North Africa is the way to expand SoW-BoB. Both North AFrica and the later stages going into early 1941 would be awesome ;) |
Agree North Africa would be fantastic:grin::grin:

As a side note. For SoW Korea i hope they find a way to avoid the Northrop-Grumman problem. I´m a little worried that we will not see Grumman aircrafts on the sim because of this. The F9F Pantherjet is the one i´m more interested on see as a flyable plane for carrier operations. If for avoiding paying NG means call it F9F "Jetpanther" ;), so be it. I hope this do not turn in to another NG thread the was discussed to death several times before. Back to the original topic, i have to say that i agree mostly with the original post. I think a monthly update with a video followed by an explanation of what its being showed and questions and answers could give more indepth information about what we will have on the final sim. One problem i have, is since i´m not a graphics expert, i fail to see lot of the details that Oleg is trying to show us on the screenshots, and the fact he also do not give an explanation of what is being showed so we can discover it, makes it more dificult to see. A video and an explanation of the video i beleive would make it more interesting, at this stage of the development. |

The real boring part is this kiddo posting the same whine over and over and over again. I would have thought he'd cried himself to sleep by now. Talk about a warped sense of entitlement. There's plenty to do while Oleg finishes his masterpeice , no reason to get all kerfuffled in the meantime. Im happy with DCS until such time as BoB is released. Its much nicer to stay occupied than to come here and whine about BoB like an old arab woman until all hours of the night........... Eries |

Oleg is currently on holidays and putting the ground work into the next SOW addon strongly rumored to be the Mediterranean Theater. If this is the case BOB SOW must be going very well and on schedule. Of course the schedule may have changed from the Battle of Britain anniversary. ;)

Sitting Can Be Dangerous To Your Health
July 26, 2010 The practice of sitting in one place for too long can lead to a shorter life, even if you exercise, according to a new study. In this week's Health Minute, MarketWatch's Kristen Gerencher offers some tips on how to stay healthy. **CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO THAT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE, WHILE WAITING FOR SOW |

Holy Mackerel! Imagine if Oleg has already gone through Beta testing and is ready to go GOLD. All these images are a ruse to his real intentions. He'd have to threaten "death, torture and banishment to Detroit" to the one who would leak any info before he allowed anything to get to us. LOL. After all the patch leaks from IL2, that would be a crowning achievement, IMO. edit: Oh what the heck. I'll go a step farther. While Jason (777 Studios) was in Russia a few months ago shoring up his dealings with neoqb, he was also pursuing publishing rights to BoB. But alas. Robert steps back into reality. |
Im 100% certain that if SOW was being beta tested that we would get to know about it, add to that we still have no dedicated website which is a 'must' for advertising purposes then i think that in all reality that Oleg is just taking some time off, however i would be very happy to be wrong.
|
Oleg has enough people working for him directly on the project to Beta the SOW.
Also, he has some very loyal friends that wouldn't spill the beans on a beta. So, a beta release is probably never going to be a consideration. When SOW gets far enough that release is close we'll probably start seeing SOW video track releases. |

Regarding 777 Studios? I'm just wishful thinking. Jason has a good business head, and a passion for simming. From my experiences on various forums he's been a great advocate for the simmer and this hobby. I'm not trying to start a rumour mill...... just a bit of fun prognostication. I'd like to see this pairing of the two groups. So anyone reading...... take nothing I say about 777/Maddox Games/BoB seriously. (Just in case some should run with my rave :D ) |

Only with a solid plataform, well tested engine and well debugged you can create solid series of releases and expansions.
I prefer to wait for the perfection. Hope that Ubisoft waits for it too. |

I'm with Puma on this one. I built a computer in December of 2006 to play SoW. We had just gotten the developement disk with 1946. I thought it was right around the corner. Now I just enjoy the developement updates. I take them for what they are. Work in progress. Oleg and his team gave us 10 years of fun with Il2. No reason to suspect SoW is going to be any different.
When it comes out I'll wait another 6 months and built the fastest computer I can afford. The problem with the delays is that the folks without a life start to fantasize about what it's going to look like. Then it's not precisely what they had in mind and they get upset. Oleg's the chef and whatever he serves up is what we're going to get. If that means I'll be chasing me109's flown by midgets or 110's with rudder trimtabs that are to big, so be it. Knowing Oleg's work methods he'll fix it eventually. No need to risk going bankrupt over such things. One thing I have to give to the nit pickers. I personally have learned quit a bit from their postings. I thought I knew all there was to know about WWII aircraft. Now I know that there was a Hurricane with a Spitfire spinner and an export version of the do17 with inline engines,(215B series) used as a recon aircraft and bomber. The learning continues. |
