It's the station crest for RAF Coltishall just down the road from me. Douglas Bader was Squadron Leader there briefly in 1940 (Hurricanes). He down his first plane, a Dornier, at nearby Great Yarmouth)

same Question Brigg, what Sqdns are you're crests???

stealth finger 02-23-2010 05:44 PM

I used to use this one before the 360th

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...uadron_RAF.jpg

31 SQN Goldstars(the latin is "First into Indian skies", based at Marham, last airforce sqn to leave Germany(Bruggen). Before my dad left the airforce he did their operations planning. Plus they have (or atleast had) more tornados than any other squadron.

Nice one. Marham's super busy with Tornados now. Coltishall closed when the Jaguar was decommisioned.

Ahh.. the ATC, one of the finest moments of my life was flying (ie: in control) a loop and a barrel roll in a Chipmunk just off the coast of blackpool.

And I loved the Jaguar too... Just quietly got on with it, no gimicks like swing wing or VTOL, just get in, kill everything, get out, make a shitload of noise and look cool whilst doing so.

The avatar crest is of 65 squadron which came to kirton airfield for all its repairs after dunkirk ready for the battle and then were based here for about a year after the battle.
The signature crest is of 103 squadron which flew halifax, wellingtons and lancasters from elsham wolds airfield and was part of the main force of bomber command. They were one the first squadrons to attack the v2 instalations at Peenemunde and included the most distinguished lancaster of ww2 (lancaster III ED88 piloted by Mike Squared) for 66 missions. It then joined 576 squadron which was formed from c flight of 103sq for 65 missions and then came back to 103sq for a final 9 missions and setting a new bomber command record.

I was in the ATC too, 1986 squadron to be precise. Never got the chance to fly though. Used to go on night exercises in Thetford forest. What a larf.

I was in 1005 squadron, Once did a night exercise on an abandoned airfield somewhere in wiltshire. A team of US special forces were there. We had to plant some explosives at the base of a radio tower. We waited outside the perimiter for 2 hours till it got dark, crept through the undergrowth all thinking we were being really stealthy and a small bush got up fired a full burst of blanks over our heads and said in an american accent, oops you're all dead. 5 other American soldiers then popped up out of nowhere. It was a very surreal experience. I was on summer camp at RAF lynham at the time and the US special forces were there in their black AC-130 on route to Iraq (1st gulf war)
They were some very serious looking men.

That's a great story. We were also ambushed and actually physically attacked by a rival ATC squadron.

I just download the AC-130 Spectre app. It's like a dumbed down version of the MW mission 'Death from Above'

Shadowcorp 02-24-2010 02:39 PM

i see atc overhead every day. i live near raf aberporth they do a lot of their low flying exercises around the valleys in cardiganshire, sometimes the americans come out to play aswell; seeing one f15 getting triple teamed by three hawks stickes well in my mind
