Ps3 Disk Drive Dead
Turned my ps3 on this morning and put a game in but my ps didn't recognise it. Tried couple disks n nothing, just a slow read noise from ps. This is a 60gig launch machine that's been replaced by sony about 18 months ago. Ironically the reason I got it replaced last time was same problem.
I guess I should feel lucky as I have copied my saves. I also have a slim ps3 120 gig in box I got 3 months ago cos I knew it was going to die. It's pretty sad you need a backup for your console these days. I have a launch Japanese dreamcast that still works fine! Funny thing is I bought a 360 arcade from amazon yesterday as a spare for when my current 360 dies |
That sucks man, but kudos for being prepared :)
I think the last firmware update (which may not have been mandatory, so check for online updates) allows you to connect 2 PS3s and copy all your crap over (including account information and protected saves). That should save you a lot of aggro, but you might need to google it... Hope it goes well! |

I will google the hook up option |
It's on the PS3 blog here. I looked because I've got a feeling I'll need it soon...

Sorry to hear that dk, at least you backed up. Catemes lost all IL-2 save data recently after his PS3 went down - which is why he hasn't been around lately. Shame.

my br-drive is broken too.
60 gig, buyed at launch. broken now for the 3. time. but now i will repair it from consolenprofies.de. 110 euro instead of 230 from sony (tvs) 2 years waranty instead of 1. |
If you're out of warranty, the BD drive costs about $99 and is one of the few user-replaceable parts of a ps3. But with a warranty it's better to have Sony fix it
I have a launch ps3 too and it has never broken <knocks on wood>. I expect the BD drive will be the first thing to wear out if anything, but only from DRE. Fortunately I don't have all that many disc-based games, and I use a pc for dvd's. |
Harsh man. My mates did exactly the same 3 weeks ago. Am glad I upgraded my original one now as it seems the 1st releases are now going tits up quite regularly.
We'll keep your seat warm till your back up and running... Or should that be slaughtering!!! |
i bought a 60 gb ps3 just as sony stoped making them.
mine still works fine although im not 100% sure how much longer it will last if it dies before gt5 is released i will curse sony as gt5 is the reason i wanted a ps3 over an xbox (oh and free internet use) |
harsh man.... but I know how you feel.. I'm on my 3rd 60gb in 2 1/2 years... lost one to BD failure, and the other to a complete system death. Luckily I signed onto to continous play before they stopped taking new members (Apparently they are starting it up again soon.)
Very important (In case you didn't know): If you get rid of your PS3, make sure you de-activate your account on that system first. I've just had a massive load of grief with Sony about using up all 5 of my account activations.. I eventually got them to reset it, but it took nearly 2 months. |
Yo dk - You have all my empathy!
Looks forward to fly with u again. |
Catemes's IL-2 disc is trapped in the drive of his dead PS3. If anyone knows how to open the disc tray (short of using a hammer) I'll pass it on.
|
3 options I know of.
1. Hold down eject for about 15 seconds, some models have a forced eject. or, 2. Hold down eject (power on) switch power off at the back and straight back on again.. It may puke up the disk.. 3. Go and get that hammer. |
Thanks Winny. (Creasing at the third option)
|
Check smash my ps3 on YouTube for the third option. Was done on the original launch day. The comments of the waiting public are priceless!!!

And when nothing else works, and u go for the hammer-option; Don't use it on u'r ps3. Round up this guy and smack him in the forehead instead!

I had to do that on my other ps3 that died before Christmas. My son had been playing assasins creed 2 when it died completely. Tried all methods of getting disc out, hold power etc. Ended up taking it apart to get disk. I would only recomend as last resort if you have no plans to try repair option because I ended up bending the disk tray housing when I missed a screw not mentioned in tutorial. The area the blue ray sits on is so cheap it's no wonder they are failing. Mine was sat on a couple of cheap bits of sponge and the cable from blue ray to motherboard looked like it was attached with sticky back plastic.
I was shocked how much dust was in there too. Looked like insides of a Vax. I hope the slim is put together a bit better!! Edit: So I had weekend horibilis. My main laptop did update for Vista service pack 2 and failed during restart. It wont boot at all now and I lost my recovery disks. While looking for vista bootup tips on my wifes netbook we managed to get an unshiftable malware that basically prevents any process running. All that and my PS3 has tested my faith in technology this weekend. I got so stressed by it all I forgot to get the Mrs a valentines card! I am going to take up the Luge |
