Tracer ammunition colors per country

Hello all,

I was wondering if countries where using a specific colors for bullet tracers.

For example, in most games german aircraft seem to use light blue color.

So, is there effectively a color per country? If yes, what are they?

ECV56_Lancelot 01-06-2010 01:11 PM

Yes, there is a specific color for country, but don´t know which color was for each country.

I hope someone knows. I haven't found any viable information on the net yet.

ECV56_Guevara 01-06-2010 01:18 PM

Blue for german
Green for Soviet Union
White for italians

And for the Pacific theatre?

Usa?
Japanese?

UK?

This reminds me of the old "The Sisterhood" song called "Finland red, Egypt white"... An excerpt from it:

"...Standard markings, fool model PS, no colour.
Tracer model T-four-five, green tip.
Eight B I model BZ, black and red tip.
Incendiary model T, type Z, red tip.
Special cartridges, plastic, blank with metal case,
Finland red, Germany black, Egypt white. "

Yes that is the actual lyrics ;)

That is wrong.

For example on the Luftwaffe side there were red, yellow, white, orange and seldom green tracers. All depending on the ammunition type.

It really depends on a multitude of factors. It depends on what kind of planes you run into. The only green tracer in the game is found on the Russian .30 cal. Later Russian planes didn't have them. The UB 12.7mm has white tracers, the Russian 20mm's have red and yelow tracers.
The germans in game have red for .30cal, blue for 13mm and 20mm and yellow for 30mm guns.

You can't exactly identify planes by the tracer collor but it helps once you know how the tracers look.

Hummm you guys really know a lot! Good for me I posted here!

I'm mostly interrested, for the moment, in this :

Over the pacific theatre,

Usa : ?

Japan : ?

Maybe someone has a link to a accurate website?

Thank a lot already for delivering these information, since I have no idea where to look in internet. Google didn't help me much!

Romanator21 01-06-2010 07:22 PM

Japan has .303 that are red in the Ki-27 and in bomber turrets, but yellow on all other fighters. There is a .50 cal which is blue, seen on late war Zeros. Early war .50 cals in Ki-43s and Ki-61s are yellow. 20 mm are yellow, but are blue in the latest Ki-61. 30 mm are yellow.

Allied aircraft have red .303s and .50 cals, and yellow 20mm Hispano.

How about we settle on what we are talking about first. Do you want to know about what we have in game or how it really was in reality? Cause what I said is based on realities.

To be honest / for the curious I'm "making" a small / modest / I believe it will be good 2D WW2 plane game on iPhone with a programmer friend. Some sort of shooter but with realistic elements in it.

For example each plane will have speudo realistic stats (but not much off course, it's a 2D game) and your plane won't be shooting loads of fireballs or lasers.
Some sort of 2D Il-2 for kids as resume.

In order to make it neat, I needed to know what would be the colors of the bullets because when possible ingame I want some minimum realism.

Also the game is taking place over the pacific, no european campaign yet (too much planes to model!) and it suits a little better the american market (70% of the world sales) for a first attempt into making a nice little game.

I've been playing lately Wings of Prey and since its not really a sim, I was wondering if the tracer colors where correct or not. And I didn't find around correct data on the web.

I've been waiting for over 5 years news from next Oleg's game, and naturally I remembered that in this forum I'd find kind people who know much more than I do about WW2 warfare and especially planes. :)

I'm sorry my questions regard my own dev of a game, but since it's iPhone stuff, there's no real harm done to 1C games. After all, maybe we can make a spin off one day? Haha!

I know that the IJN used a lot of different colors...each ammo type had a different color. NOT ONLY THAT, but the anti-aircraft ammo on each ship had a different color. The game fails to properly model this aspect of "gameplay".

One can only imagine how colorful the game would look during a nighttime air strike.

It is NOT a specific color per country.
There are many different colors depending on the tracer elements used.
Here is some info that may prove useful to you.

Well to all, thank you very much.
I believe having enough data for the bullets FX now :)

With me luck in the dev!

Yeah, I tried finding the IMG button, but didn't see it here. I didn't feel like typing that in every time so the attachment way was easier.

Lolz, Color of the tracer matters nill to me...if its flying over my wing, past my canopy im not wasting time looking at the color =P :-P

Lucas_From_Hell 01-13-2010 08:52 AM

Tracer colour is only useful to tell if it's friendly fire or not

Erkki 01-19-2010 05:58 AM

Easy,

Green, only gun is the ShKas, "green laser" in I153, I16, Jak-1, Jak-7, MiG-3, LaGG-3, IL2 + reargunners of IL2, Pe2, SB2, DB3, TB3, R10, IL4

Red, every single US plane apart from F4U1-C(4 cannoned corsair), every British plane apart from Tempest V and Spitfire Vc(4), Russian ShVak cannon in I16type24, LaGG3, Jak1, hurrcane field mod,Jak7, most Jak9s, La-5, also MGs of Ki27 and early Ki43s, IAr80 and IAR81, jap reargunners and Aich Val's guns, also most heavier guns have red tracer

White, UB HMG and B20 cannon in Jak1B, Jak7B, Jak9, Jak9U, Jak3 and 3P, La5FN, La7, most LaGG3s, Mig3, Jak3, IL10, hurri field mod, gunners of IL2, Pe2, Pe8, italian MG and HMG in FiatCr42, FiatG50, MC200, MC202, MC205, SM79, MGs and HMGs in Ki61s, Ki43s and Ki100

Yellow, Hispano Suiza cannon in Tempest V, Spitfires, Hurri IIc, P38, P400 and P39D, "that one american cannon" in F4U1-C, MK108 and MK103 in 109G6 to K4, FW190A8, A9, Ta152, Ki84c, Me163, Me262, MG-FF cannon in Bf109E, FW190A4 and A5, cannons in A6M2, 3 and 5, cannon and HMG in Ki84s, Ki100, reargunners of He111, Ju52, Ju87B2 and rear firing cannon in Betty, frontal firing cannon in He111

Orange, MG17 in Bf109E, F and G2, FW190A4, A5, A6, Me110, Ju87 B2s and D3's front guns

Purple, Ju88, Me110 and Ju87 D3, D5 and G1's gunners

Blue, MG151 and MG151/20 in Bf109F, G2(selectable at least with gunpods in all later 109s as well), all FW190s, MG131 HMG in Bf109G6 to K4, FW190A8, A9, D9, ta-152, MC205 series III, last Ki61, later Zeros, Me110

So, anything that fires blue, orange or purple is guaranteed to be Axis, anything firing green or combination of red and yellow or white is Allied. At the west front, anything firing white is Axis, anything firing red is Allied but that also nearly applies to Pacific and East Front.

The only 4 planes firing 3 different colours are FW190s from A4 to A6(orange, blue, yellow), Me110(blue, orange, purple), Pe-8(green, white, red) and LaGG-3 series 4(green, white, red).
