OT: 50% Lower Frame Rate With New Video Card

I just upgraded my video card from a NVIDIA GTX 260 to a NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti. The problem is that my IL-2 frame rates are now HALF of what they were on the 260. All my settings are the same and the driver version is also the same (the latest driver version: 314.22).

The 650 is PCI 3.0 ready but I believe my motherboard is 2.0. However, the info with the new card says that the 650 is fully compatible with legacy 2.0 components.

Any idea why I am getting 50% LOWER frame rate with the new card?

Did you just drop the card in and go from there?

In my experience, although it's a bit dated now, it's always a good idea to completely remove the video card drivers before installing the new card. Then when the new card drops in, it can go in cleanly.

Uninstall everything from nVidia from the Programs list. Download the latest drivers again. Install.

Should kick things back into gear. If not... then there may be some setting with IL-2 specifically that might be causing an issue.

This is likely to be a result of the power saving features of the GTX 6xx series. Go into your Nvidia control panel and make sure you 'power management' set to 'prefer maximum performance'.

Good Luck Aviar!

No, I installed the card correctly...remove old drivers and then reinstall new drivers after the new card goes in. Also, I did it twice, after I saw the poor frame rate the first time.

The reason I originally said the drivers are the same is because I upgraded to the same drivers just a week before and they were were working perfectly with the 260...so I know it's not the drivers.

I don't see 'Power Management' settings in any of these....

**EDIT: I just came from another forum and someone posted screenshots of their NVIDIA Control Panel 3D settings. They have a 'power management mode' option in their 3D settings. However, in MY 3D settings I DO NOT have such an option. I do have the latest drivers, so I don't know what to say.

Problem solved! It seems to have been one simple option in my 3D settings.

In the 'Antialiasing - Mode' setting, I had the 'Override any application setting' chosen. This gave me a 50% DECREASE in frame rate compared to my old card.

After selecting the 'Enhance the application setting' option, I now get at least a 30% INCREASE compared to my old card.

Thanks to all who responded!

This is natural, but in case of Il-2 you will get no antialiasing at all with these settings (you need 'Override any application setting' for this).

I also have the GTX 650 (without Ti) and I can run the game very fine on highest settings with 4x MSAA. I suspect some more fancy AA settings in your driver options. Would be interesting to see it. You can loose a lot of framrates with wrong settings, and on the other side you can get more performance and eyecandy, if you do it right.

It will be nice to see a video setup guide for IL2! I think a lot of people with good computers can't get the best out of them for this game and a lot of times nailing the best settings for the game is a pain in the a(s)s.

There were lots of guides for the older cards like the Voodoo4 4500 and old Radeons where every tweak was needed for the original game.

But as things progressed and settings were able to be turned on (perfect mode) there became a "standard" setting for a long while for ATI & Nvidea become settled in and most tweaks were made out side of the games conf.ini settings.

The newer generation of cards need a new guide made as up to a GTX 560ti Phantom 2gig the setting are the same as older series. even in the drivers :)
