Tbh I have neverheard of adding ram ruining an overclock seems foolish to me, have a word with tree or Phat they seem to be this forums resident supercomputer builders.
|
PotNoodles did you get your system from OCUK? Its just that they do say that adding more ram can affect the overclock on their overclocked bundles. That could be more to do with the way they set them up though, ram voltages etc.

I have 4 GB's it works fine for me. My next system will have 8 though. Ram is cheap now, so I would recommend at least 2 x 4GB.
With the desastersoft addon I think they are recommending 12 GB! |
I think 6gb is enough 8gb is perfect anymore is only useful ATM if you are doing video editing etc.

First you have 3 channel memory controler, and you have 4 GB of RAM. Is it 2x2 GB or 4x1 GB ? In any case you are losing something, more in the first case , and for second case I'm not shure, haven't played with i7. But in any case proper setup for this platform is 3x(what you can afford) GB of RAM. Second. It is true when you overclock i7 930 you have to raise your base clock, and that will raise RAM frequency also, but you have thing called memory divider ( if it is at least midrange board) in your BIOS settings. Overclock is not bad by the way. I'm glad that you solved the problem. |

Oops missed that! Thats why its good to put your system specs in your sig!
3x2GB should be OK, next upgrade would be 3x4GB. You would be looking at around £90 to double your ram to 12Gb currently. |
@ PotNoodles: I just wanted to say, that it could be badly oc'ed. As u state about professional: They perhaps just spent some seconds for you in the BIOS to get a higher price(?) You never know... :)
The 4GB thinh sounds very strange to me. Who will buy such a rig with so few RAM? And then you have a video card, which is performing good, but is totally old fashioned concerning memory. Several guys posted about the great videi card, but the guys, who have some negative concerns about it were not heard. If you are running CloD at 1920x1080 with high settings, you should see, that video memory gets full! I personally have up to 2,7 GB video ram usage and the normal ram also has some jobs to do. Just want to say, that the decision to buy a more expensive video card with lowered or no support of some keyfeatures of todays standard cards is also a decision of your own. I do personally (as a nvidia fanboy) NOT recommend to buy the 680, if you want to use it a bit longer than 1 year or less. Streaming engines could get more and more important for complex games with large areas. So, this methods and better textures, etc. will be the main thing = higher VRam is recommended in future. This is my opinion. I like nvidia and was positively surprised of its performance, but after detailed discussions and reading lots of reviews, I finally came to the conclusion, that the hd 7970 is the better card for me (multi monitor and sim games with high memory usage....). Although I hate catalyst drivers. :) |
