Though UBI has a track record of disastrous decision in regards to games, SH5 being a prime example, I am not so sure they are to blame in this case. This sim has been in development for over 6 years. That is a massive time period not even triple A titles usually require. All those years Olegs and folks had to be fed and paid, and usually the publishers takes care of that. So I can't really blame UBI for wanting to eventually see results.
Oleg is not a business person, he is a flight jock and in the biz for his own personal madness, a madness we all share and support. But personal ambition often leads to not so rational practices. I can very much imagine, after all the wishes constantly written down by the community, his wish to deliver brought Maddox Games quite some trouble with financial realities. Nevertheless, what we DO have, buggy and lacking optimization as it is, nevertheless has such huge potential sticking to it is the word of the day. If one thing is for sure, then that Oleg and Maddox Games deliver. 10 years of constant patching, goodies and expansions for the original IL2 are living proof for that. Now I understand the newbies here lack this experience, used to the rest of the game world and the profit profit profit attitudes and as such are understandably spiffed. Nevertheless I am convinced we have the best WW2 sim ever conceived on our machines now. |

Then blame 1c, not Ubisoft. 1C is the first publisher and has all the decision tools over the development team... That game cannot represent much more than 2% of Ubi total sales (around a billion euros); absolutely no interest in rushing it. Now think about the % for 1C (own sales in Russia + royalties from sales of Ubi). Who had the highest interest of getting money early, and who could decide? Ubi? Meh. No chance. |
Since I gave up any hope of flying at resolutions 3072x and with three monitors without SLI support
I tried easier settings: Window mode 800x600 (my game does not allow for window 1024x768, if anybody can give me a tip on how to fix this I would be eternaly gratefull (conf.ini change to 1024x768 end with a black screen)) => SOLVED! I had to change the resolution of my desktop to 3840x1024 and then, in the game, I was offered the option of windowed 1024x768 :-) It looks like a very playable game on WinXP and DX9 unlimited fps (422fps) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/1_422fps.JPG Graphics are still amazing http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/1_Window800.JPG Inside the cockpit constant 130fps http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/1_pass.JPG The sun effects are magnificent, when the sun hits the front window you are completely blind (here sun is on the side) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/1_sun.JPG These are my settings http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/1_Window800settings.JPG This is good enough for me, especialy if I manage to get it 1024x768 while waiting for the SLI to be ready. Excellent game, one step ahead of IL2FB and I am sure we will spend years of discussions with it :-) |

I'm actually quite happy with the performance of the game.
I haven't played it extensively yet, but my computer, hardly a monster, copes quite well. Resolution: 1900x1200 Antialaising x 2 Model detail: high Building detail: very low Land detail: low Forest Detail: very low Visual effects: medium Damage decals: medium Building amount: low land shading: medium Buildings, grass, roads all on I'm getting 21-30 fps over land, anything from 35 fps and more over water. (And how gorgeous does that water look?!! Wow!) Machine specs: Intel dual core 6850 Radeon 5870 4 gigs ram windows 7 I think this game (sorry, sim) is going to rock, once a few niggles are sorted out. |
Mh, I've finally registered here in order to show some support. I think a lot of hate here is based on hearsay and in actuality, things are not as bad as "they" make it to be. Sure, there are still quite a few bugs and performance issues, but, overall, I'm having a blast so far! :) Just wanted to share my opinion:
Starting with the un-packing of my CE, I was quite pleased. The Spit Manual facsimile looks quite good; the bound manual is really great and the cloth map... well, I hoped it would be some finer cloth, more silk-like, but it's okay. Then the installation. Well, that was rather annoying. Registering here and there, entering codes multiple times and having to actually download around 500MB was not really pleasant. Ah well, at least this has to be done only once. Then on to the many config screens ingame. Set everything to realism except that antropomorphic thingy - the description of that option just sounded like a fountain of possible bugs and bug-like behavior, so i left it off from the beginning. And from what I read, that was a wise decision. I fiddled around with the pilot and aircraft customization features, without having a real clue. The custom pilot stayed so far, but aircraft customs seem to reset immediately. Well, we'll see... And now to the hard part: Controls. After setting up some Il-2 - like Keyset and after configuring my Joystick with some difficulty (*), I realized that some Joystick axes don't seem to save their settings. This is definately a bug. Not too annoying, but nevertheless. Finally, the video config. For now, I've arrived at a fairly standard setting, which most users here seem to use, too, and so far, the game runs acceptable with that, land or sea. Now, fly the damn thing already. I took a cruise over london in the new tiger moth, then made a cross-channel flight to calais. And what can I say: everything looked awesome - the channel area even more so than downtown London, imo. What didn't look very sophisticated is the map window. Just leaving it win95-style looks rather... well, non-polished, imo. At least make the widgets steam-style or something. And I hope that the actual "drawn" map isn't the final version, too :) Then went on to the training missions. The first 3 were rather easy, as you all might know, but it took a while for me to start up that hurricane in the "First solo flight"-mission. Oh, and that mission is bugged, too, isn't it? After taking off, the trainer directs you to a ring that, seemingly, doesn't exist, so he's constantly yelling at you from then on. Not that pleasant :) Last Training mission worked fine again; I even made a (comparatively) smooth landing! Yay!. That was before I realized how hard the wheelbrakes bite... just a single press and i got a broken propeller :( So, yeah, it itches here and there, but, looking at the whole package, this will be the future of WW2 Simulation. Bar none. It's almost that you have to re-learn to fly when coming from 1946 - I didn't think realism could still be ramped up by such a margin. 1C will sort their bugs out, improve performance and add a lot of stuff. Things will be fine, I think. P.S.: And Who started the rumour that sounds were taken 1:1 from 1946? I can't confirm that, at all. In fact, my hurricane engine sounds awesomly... wrong :). I think I didn't get it right, mixture-wise and such ^-^ (*)This might help some others who have problems with their joysticks: If your Joystick axes aren't recognized ingame, try this: -save your custom key profile .ini file -open it with an editor -look for the joystick axes section -insert the correct ones by hand. (In my case (old logitech Wingman Extreme 3d) : X, Y, RZ, -U for ailerons, elevator, twisty rudder, throttle) -save file The correct axes should now show up correctly ingame. But remember, some individual axis settings are buggy and cannot be saved over sessions at the moment. |
So now, I managed to get the 1024x768 window to work, the results look good and the fps, too:
WinXP and DX9 mode (Yeaah I know, old habits die hard...) A significant decrease from the 433fps at 800x600 mode, now only 270fps! (I think I will survive the hit...) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_270fps.JPG Same picture with cockpit on, now "only" 162fps (mirror off) Notice the change of color of the sea due to the cockpit http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_...kpit162fps.JPG Still the graphics quality is excellent! http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_Window1024.JPG In dogfight, constant 130fps http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_pass.JPG The sun effects are magnificent, when the sun hits the front window you are completely blind (on the side) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_sun.JPG Also when the sun reflects on the front thick window from the rear, you also become blind http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_sun2.JPG These are my settings http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/2_...24settings.JPG Intercepting many bombers, the stuttering problems are gone (I had 2(two)fps flying 3072x768 before the patch) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/B_1.JPG 88fps inside the cockpit http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/B_2.JPG 130fps without cockpit - the thick armoured front glass makes a big difference (who needs a propeller?) http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/B_3.JPG 120fps external view http://www.stoimenos.com/temp/CoD/B_4.JPG This is good enough for me, while waiting for SLI to get ready and the things Kalimba mentioned http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthr...=20055&page=12 Quote:

I will buy it knowing that it is a forward leaning flight sim. In another few years, the machines with catch up with the code and it will be as ROF is today. It is my "duty" as a flight sim enthusiast to support any dev that I believe in to produce something great. Oleg can consider it my donation for continued development, for which I get a playable version of the "beta" or whatever it is people are calling it.
**people (and developers) need to stop looking at the initial release as a "finished" product and call it what it is, paid access to a Beta version. There is just not enough money in the world (especially in flight sims) to polish off a game and have it 100% at release with the complexity WE (the gamers) are looking for. If the flight sim communiy lets CoD flounder, UBI will probably just kick it to the side and press on with some first person shooter. Might as well buy it, give a good showing and wait for updates because that is the natural flow of flight sims today. |
