Sorry, but I disagree with this part of your post. No blame can be laid at the user's door at all, since Sli/X-fire is hardly new tech anymore, and besides many people had dual gpu configurations long before Clod saw the light of day. For many, Clod is also not the only game they play.
People shouldn't have to be restricted to certain hardware choices because of software foul-ups.

I don't disagree with you in principle.
What i'm trying to say is that if i bought a new PC today to play a game that i don't know much about its inner workings and it has a small following, i would consider myself asking for trouble if i went for SLI/Xfire.
It has caused problems for many users in many different games over the years (especially sims), it's better to use it for stuff that you know are fully compatible with it or just buy a beefier single GPU card.
Also, the reason people use it is not so much performance but the ability to spread the price of said performance over a longer time: "why buy a 6970 if i can buy one 5850 now and another one in two or three months?"
And the answer is because the single GPU will give you less trouble overall, but you have to fork out all the cash in one go. It's all a trade off really.
To cut a long story short, if i really want a certain hardware configuration for whatever reasons i will also take its inherent disadvantages in stride, otherwise i will use something different.
