3D model makers make 3D models.. its what they do.. there is an amazing AD-4 Skyraider and Mig15bis done as well..but that doesn't mean that it is taking 1 ounce of resources away from getting the game back on its feet.

There is a plan for this engine, to continue to improve, optimize, add new content, new maps, theaters, etc. They have no plans to drop support for this any more than they dropped it for IL2. They are really scrambling right now to get things fixed up.. in reality they've done some amazing things in a month given the complexity of the core code.. I would expect to see a very high tempo of fixes and improvements for the next several months until it reaches a level they are comfortable with, and then they will continue to improve it as they add new things to the game..

They are very much in this for the long haul.. grab a seat, this is how IL2 started and went on for 10 years.. and the possible ceiling for this engine is 10X what IL2 is limited to

Although one could argue that CoD still lacks a number of gameplay-sensitive types such as the Bf 109 E-1 and E-4, the Ju 52 and any kind of warship for both sides ... ;)

This Thread is about VE Day, some of you whining an bitching about CloD should do that on the other Threads in this Forum and should at least show some minimum of respect for the Veterans.

Looking forward to an Eastern Front scenario!

Hope the holiday was good, even if you guys spend it at the office.

Glad to hear that a new addon was approved by the publishers, given the current state of Cliffs of Dover. I didn't want the IL-2 series to meet an untimely end.

That said as you pointed out Luthier, if you don't finish Cliffs of Dover first no-one will hang around to buy the next installment so I'm glad you realise the situation we are all in. :)

This is the point and somehow the "good news", in my opinion. Seeing the team working on add-ons and expansions is somehow our life insurance about COD being totally fixed and maxed out.
Nobody can build a sequel on a flawed base and hope to sell it. I am personally glad to hear the news.

And yes: 3d modelers have been working on that IL2 plane and on that building Luthier posted here. This does NOT mean that coders aren't working to the fixing of COD.

Sternjaeger II 05-10-2011 11:33 AM

Happy V-E Day to you too Luthier.. I see that you haven't learned much in terms of PR, but I suppose it's a Maddox Games trademark, isn't it?

carguy_ 05-10-2011 11:54 AM

This thread is just excellent. Fool of idiots moaning how we should get the game running, completely halting development of the next expansion altoghether.

Well you are EFFING WRONG!
The IL2 franchise has shown that those expansions are also code changers, which means lots and lots of bug corrections here and there. 1C is kept busy this way and can release the next product to get some needed revenue. If you don`t understand that then you should not playing the game at all, because you`re just too stupid. If we want this game to exist longer than a year, we NEED expansions as a good form of supporting the devs, and getting something in return. And let me tell you - 1C gives LOTS of content in their expansions.

So go ahead Luthier and tell the guy we`re waiting to spend some more money on your products. You should be warned though - as customers I think we require the first expansion to bring the CloD to functionality of IL2, wich means no big bugs, no show stoppers. Buying the first expansion pack is the amount of trust many of us are willing to give you again, cuz we believe in this game. That said, as a fan of the game, I can`t say that another botched release won`t bring the fanbase growth to a halt.

That said, I can`t help but feel a bit disapointed on the choice of the new theater of operations. I feel bored with Eastern Front. The main thing I`m concerned about is completion of any of them. I thought that the times when 50% of the planes in a coop were AI are already behind us. Now, when we haven`t even started to completing the western front plane pool, you tell us you`re working on another one.

Even though a Malta/N. Africa scenario would appeal, an updated IL-2 with the latest cockpits and a decent campaign mode would be awesome imo.

Maybe it's me, but shouldn't these art guys be doing something like, I don't know, optimizing their freakin assets? You know, stuff like compressing their damned huge texture files, optimizing the models, etc ? Half the performance issues in the game are their problem. I suggest they get on with it instead of modelling more useless churches and aircraft for the next add-on.

..it might well be a third party development, even if the cartoonesque texturing looks appallingly similar..

Nonsene...

They have delivered what they were asked to deliver. We all knew very well the ground objects would have as many polys as a IL-2 plane and we also knew that texture sizes would rise because we all want more eye candy and graphics that can compete with 2011 titles, SO DEAL WITH IT!

GnigruH 05-10-2011 03:54 PM

Where are Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine then?
Not to mention additional planes.
And more maps.
Main map also needs improvement.
Nothing more to work on in clodo? Don't think so.

+100%

There is so much more they can do to this campaign,it's a great period of history.

The thought of going back to the 'Russian Front' does not appeal quite frankly,I think the original iL2 covered this.

Now war over Europe, that would be something else,maybe,....and I'm sticking my neck out here,a flyable B17,with COD style cockpit graphics and flight model with complex engine management, just think of flying that with the four engines, what a beast to tame!!!

And not forgetting the Axis powers,maybe a flyable Fw190 or a Me163,ok now I'm dreaming,sorry,I'll leave.

Sorry to be blunt- You are talking about working arround the clock but you have to do it to make up for the state of the released game and to account for customer service.
If you don't get your act togerhear soon, CoD will be forgotten.
Talking about future addons for CoD in its state is bad joke.
Planely, the game needs fixing almost in every aspect:
-Performans
-Sound
-FM's
-MP
-Campains
-Effects
-Consistant FFB
-AI....

Still it is fantastic day to remember the victory over the Nazis:-)

As long as we are all requesting what 1c should really be focusing on

Bob's strategic campaign layer changed the way I think about flight sims. I'm a lot more immersed in the fight if I was the one that ordered the attack.

Please consider making a strategic overlay on Il2-COD that allows us to control either the RAF or Luftwaffe, plan attacks, manufacturing resourcing and jump into fight when we'd like to.

philip.ed 05-10-2011 07:49 PM

Indeed, BoB2 is not just strategic. One can easily join a squadron, and participate in just that squadron's exploits. The campaign will follow historical events, but it's dynamic, so hugely reliant on the battle going on around. I personally have never had a better sim experience, and last summer, a few of us on simHQ did a day-by-day historical recreation of the BoB by posting daily AR's. It was interesting to compare eachother's, and they're well worth a read over there, as there are some awesome story lines which went on or (in my case) fizzled out...

Sounds good. I really hope to see a decent dynamic campaign for CoD. Luthier mentioned he had produced a design document for it and was disappointed at it not being implemented as yet. I don't think that there is any other way to really integrate the immersive 'being there' experience into a game like this. Without it we are just playing single, disconnected missions with no real feeling of tension or period involvement.

Regarding the Eastern Front, i'm quite happy to see it redone with next-gen cockpits, etc. Personally I'd prefer it to the Med, though I have to say the Med would be a comparatively easy add-on for the dev team. Anyway, good to see that plans for the future are in hand.

I agree with this. Where are the destroyers? Where are the smaller merchant ships.
I'm starting to think there is a problem with AAguns on moving objects. This would stop the release of war ships. :(

I would like to see the Med too. But I wonder if this platform can cope with it's map size. Having worked on the Med in CFS3 I know how big it is.
However I would be pleased to see it and may be get to fly that Wellington which was used a lot in Africa and the Med.

The whole team deserves a holiday. Great of you guys to work on that patch instead of taking a rest, that's dedication to a measure which is rare in this market.

The new screenies are very promising - I also love the IL-2.
I will never forget the first time I started up the original IL-2 sim. It wasn't flawless but boy id it beat everything else...

The same will happen with CoD; patches will remedy some of the first issues. Then we will see a constant tide of updates. The sim obviously having a long development future, it will not get the usual (IL-2) framerates but hey!
this thing is being developed for the future and it won't be long until we get more goodies.

We know all that, right?
So why don't we give our favo development team a break?

V-E Day

Very well said Ilya. What IL-2 Sturmovik and IL-2 COD have done is realistically put you in the WWII air battle scenario, many people died in the real scenario. The simulations make you really think about what really happened and makes you think about the tremendous human losses from all sides during the war.

I have just finished reading Wing Commander 'Dizzy' Allen's account of the Battle of Britain in his excellent book 'Fighter Squadron'. During the battle, every week he lost a good friend, which he describes very passionately. Dizzy Allen flew Spitfires and our new Il-2 COD Spitfire really puts you in the 'hot seat' as he probably experienced it.

Good to see a Sturmovik pic and is the pic of the Kremlin a hint of a large Russian map?

I tend to agree Pluto. I read this a bit through the forum that people should have waited, read the reviews and decided then if they wanted to purchase the game. If everyone did this how could there be reviews. I purchased the game as soon as I saw it was coming out. I did this because I (yes, perhaps foolishly) trusted the myriad of things they said this game would be on release.
I still believe this will be the best sim but I have to support those that feel upset with their purchase. It's their right.
At the moment my comp is running CoD like a champion with only a few bugs here and there.

I suggest they get on with it instead of modelling more useless churches and aircraft for the next add-on.

You really shouldn't talk to 1C like that. They tried.

I was going to write see above , but that might be misunderstood as well.

He probably means the general public who have no inkling how such projects are managed.

Not 1C.
A language barrier perhaps?

GnigruH 05-11-2011 05:25 PM

Lack of sense of humour perhaps?

What about other planes for bob, and warships?
'See above'?
Don't think so.

IMHO chosing eastern front is a sign of things going worse than expected.

Instead of going for a theatre that would sell the expansion worldwide, instead of adding american planes, they go back to ussr vs germs, which can sell good in these two countries, but not so good anywhere else.

I don't want to be right, but I'm afraid this russian expantion may be the last.
Like grab some money from where you easily can and gtfo?

I'm willing to bet Russia is a bigger market than the USA, at least in the case of CoD.
C'mon...it's not like we didn't think there would be an eastern front at some point, right?
Does it really matter if it's next on the list or only later on?

If...

If it was not for the war of wars, probably your parents or grandparents would not have coupled; and if they had, their financial world would have been so different as to cast doubt on the conception of all born after that time.

And just as you and I are most likely to be the product of lucky events, out of our time, so the creative minds that make this game are out of our control, and in the minds of geniuses, whose parameters we are not fit to guess at.

The 1C team have proven themselves in the past, why should we betray them with lack of faith now?

+1

Best comment of the last 2 months, by one of the finest vitual pilots in the history of Il2. It expresses exactly how I feel.

Thanks for that Jimmy,

I don't think that drive by expressed a lack of faith, just urgency, and priority.

IL-2 is a Russian franchise, made by Russian developers with a very large Russian fanbase. That was first released back in 2001 featuring the Eastern front of WW2 (Russia and Germany).

And you're wondering why Russia will be in it? ;)

That's funny, I see it as a natural progression because it's what happened next. Barbarossa would be the next logical step because it shares existing AC types. That and it follows the historical time line

Agh? There was fighting in the Med (ie Greece and North Africa) before Barbarossa. As for a/c, the same a/c types as in the BoB.

tomaz 05-11-2011 11:49 PM

Flyable Heavy Bombers...

....B17, B24 etc. Will we ever see it?

Blackdog_kt 05-12-2011 12:01 AM

Talk of add-ons by the dev team is encouraging to me. It tells me they believe they can keep working on the series. They didn't lay off their artists, they didn't send them on extended leave, they have them working (and getting paid) on the next expansion while coders work on optimizing the current version. This shows me that they are out of the woods financially and we can all probably rest easy they'll keep supporting the new series.

As for the selection of theaters, i wouldn't mind some med/N.Africa action but i have no problem with eastern front too. How many times have we seen a repetition of the ETO and how many times have we seen the MTO and eastern front? The med and Barbarossa are original and not done to death, so bring it on.

Don't get me wrong, i can't wait to some day fly 190s against B-17s or mosquitoes on night intruder missions over western Europe. It's just that some originality is also good and it constitutes another selling point.

Another thing that has been mentioned by others is that the med and the eastern front also share a lot of common aircraft types with what we already have in CoD or slight modifications of existing ones... the Hurris are very similar for example: add two more guns, adjust weight and engine data and you have an Mk.IIb, or add bomb racks too and replace the .303s with Hispanos and you got an Mk.IIc.

In a similar fashion, 109Es, 110s and He111s are perfect for a barbarossa scenario too.

This gives the dev team more time to focus on rounding out the rest of the appropriate planeset by adding in a P-40 and more Italian fighters for the med or the VVS fighters in case of an eastern front expansion.

This particular point in the "Eastern Front" represents essentially the BOB without the Channel. Tiny, slow aircraft with a thimble full of fuel flying the same extremely limited short tactical missions with very little ammunition. You can take up your Ju-87( IL-2) escorted by BF-109( Yak or LaGG) and attack a small target 30 miles from you airbase. Substitute your Spitfire or Hurricane, Ju-88 or He-111 and you get the picture. All of your computers resources spent rendering London is of little value and will probally be repeated rendering Moscow.Proving to be more of a liability when considering" playability" ,framerates.
The Med. offers more varity in aircraft ,tatical scenario's and more interesting map.

I wouln't get to worked up over suggested sequel to Cliffs of Dover, dont forget the American release is only 2 weeks away, talk of future additions is most likely to raise confidence for those potential buyers. Personally I think a North African Campaign will be the way they will go if indeed a sequel is being planned.

Happy V-E day( even if I am :oops:late) I have to be honest I havent purchaced Clod yet. Alot of people in our squad have it and have worked with all kinds of settings and kind of formulated a working result. I was more interested in KOREA but I will take the Russian front as well.

I think once the game reaches a playable level it will be fantastic! Thanks for your hard work Luthier and 1C!

IceFire 05-15-2011 02:17 AM

I've been so busy I missed this!

Very cool teasers... I really like the Eastern Front. It wasn't an interest until IL-2 made it into an interest for me. Love to see more soon :)
